These little bristle things move back and forth, and they're supposed to detangle quickly and painlessly. The box says that you can use this on wet or dry hair, so I figured we'd split the hair down the middle and do one side wet and the other side dry. I'm going to be testing this detangler out on how well it detangles, how quickly it detangles, and how painlessly it detangles. I'm not really sure about the last one, because this [brush whirring] is terrifying. All I have in my hair right now is my normal detangling spray that I use every single time I detangle. So, what they want you to do is kind of work bottom up. So, like, do it little by little, raise it, do it little by little, raise it, until you get to the top, and you keep doing it until it's all detangled. Oh. Oh! Actually, it's literally not as terrifying as I thought at all. I have to say that so far, even though I did hit one or two snags because I didn't remove the brush and then start at the top again, that was my own fault, this thing is working pretty painlessly. Like, I don't feel anything when it's going through my hair, and I expected the dry side to be literally so painful. One thing that I can say is that with my normal detangling brush in the shower, I feel like I shed a lot more. This is, like, no big deal. This is nothing compared to what's left over in the shower when I'm done brushing my hair. OK, so now we're going to do the wet side. I'm just going to spray my hair with my spray bottle. I don't want it to be soaking, soaking wet, but thoroughly damp. I'm already noticing a huge difference in detangling the wet side versus the dry side. It's just gliding through the hair so much easier. Obviously, I just think wet hair in general is easier to detangle, but I'm liking it a lot better on the wet side. I also think it's moving so much faster through my wet hair, so I do think that it's possible that this detangles faster than my normal way of detangling, but only if your hair is actually wet. Before I tell you guys what I think about the detangler, I'm going to have my friends Celia and A. C. also try it out so we can see how it performs on different hair types. Celia Skvaril: I have <keyword id="83404" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="straight-hair">straight hair</keyword>. This is pretty much it after it dries after the shower, but it's incredibly fine. So I'll brush it fully out and then take a step, and it'll be completely tangled again. A. C. Fowler: So, my natural hair is what I think is <keyword id="11234188" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="4c-hair">4C hair</keyword>. So very thick, classic Afro, Black hair. Celia: It feels really, like, skinny. I feel like it feels like, I mean, my hair is very thin, but I feel like it feels less thick. It just feels very smooth. I feel like a lot, since my hair is so fine, it kind of slipped through a lot of places. But other than that, I mean, I think it's, it feels pretty untangled. When I finger-comb it, I didn't really snag. A. C.: I'm surprised that this is even kind of working. It hits a snag, but it doesn't feel like it's pulling at my hair. So I'm fine. Like, it doesn't... I could see a kid maybe being like, "Ow, it hurts." Just at any feeling of a pull, but as an adult man, [laughing] it's just fine. One thing I'm noticing is that it's just really easy for parts of the hair to completely go through because the bristles are so wide, so it just might not even get touched when you pass through it. Nico: Is it still not painful? Celia: No, it's not painful, but I feel like it's hard because for some reason this isn't feeling as smooth to me. A. C.: I'm shocked, because I did not think this was gonna work at all, wet or dry. [laughing] Nico: I literally was expecting it to be like... A. C.: [laughing] Me too. I was expecting it to be spinning, and then be like [imitates stopping]. [laughing] Wow, so it just encountered a pretty thick clump, and I just slowed down and went through it a few times, and then it just went straight through. So, on the first side, the dry side, definitely took a long, long time, much longer than usual. On the wet side, much quicker. Nico: Taking A. C. and Celia's experiences into consideration, I think that I can say that this product does work, and it does work for different hair types depending on how you use it. I don't think that this is going to replace my normal method of detangling, because I do like to do it in the shower and this thing has batteries in it, but it's a product that does what it says it's going to do

The product page says that this thing works in one stroke, which, I don't know if I believe that. Besides the heat protectant that I'm gonna be using, I have zero product in my hair right now. It's just my dry hair in its normal state.For me, at least right now, it's definitely not a one-stroke situation. I do have to do a couple of passes, but this is still straightening pretty fast. I am gonna try and get a little bit closer to my roots, because they're still really curly and bumpy. I never, ever straighten my hair. People who straighten their hair all the time must be watching this like, what is she doing? Right now this is at 410, and I can easily touch it because these parts of the comb do not get hot, so people say that they can get really, really close to their scalp. So that's what I'm gonna try right now. It's doing pretty well. Let's try it this way. There's no bumps at all! I think it's gonna be a little bit harder once I start working on the back of my head just because it's not as easy for me to maneuver that, but this is pretty great.OK. So, I'm almost done, but just, like, touching the top of my hair, this, like the crown of my head, is my problem area, and I can still feel some bumps back there. So I'm gonna turn around and try to work out some of the bumps on the back of my head. What was that video we did where I looked exactly like Jacob Black? [ding] I will say, I do like how my hair turned out. But before I give you my final thoughts, let's see how the Tymo comb worked out for my friends A. C. and Caroline.A. C. Fowler: So, I think I have 4C hair, which is thick, <keyword id="388" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Curly-Hair">curly hair</keyword>. Black hair. Yeah, I have never, ever straightened my hair, ever before.Caroline Aghajanian: I would say I have wavy hair, and then it gets puffier on the bottom. I just don't like that it's so flat up top. But it's fine.Nico: And they have a chart on here that says, like, this is the right heat for you to use on your hair, and there is actually a section that's for bleached hair. So I feel like that's probably the one you're gonna have to use.Caroline: Yeah. You know what? That's really good, because my biggest fear, I guess anyone that goes blond, is kind of -- like, your hair is so damaged, so if you iron it, sometimes it might break off. Like, even from here. And I'm like, I don't want my hair to break off from my scalp.Nico: I think you're gonna be the same level as me. I was level five, which is, like, thick, curly hair, and it's 410 degrees.A. C.: [gasps] Oh, I'm so nervous! [laughs]Caroline: Wow! Oh, my gosh. [gasps] This is good! A. C.: Oh, my gosh! [laughs] It's so straight. Holy moly. Let's just say, first little bit, that was very easy. It really did straighten it. My hair has never been straight before. I can, like, put it behind my ears. [laughs]Caroline: Even at this low heat, it ironed it pretty well.Nico: Is this faster than your normal straightener?Caroline: Yeah, this is so fast. And, like, my normal straightener, it's a pretty good brand, but I still smell burning hair when I use it. Yeah. Even at a very low setting. And so, this one I don't. It's really good. So, I feel like I can get really close to my ears, because the outside blades aren't too hot. And so I can really get those hairs that don't really grow, or, like, the hairs that are super close to the scalp.A. C.: So, yeah, overall I definitely think that this works for thick, curly hair. My hair type.Nico: Clearly, my friends and I loved trying out the Tymo Hair Straightener Comb, and it actually straightened our hair really, really well, especially the roots, which was the big point of concern for us. Is it gonna get close enough to our roots where it doesn't burn us but still straightens? And it did. Dubbed "hair training" by TikTokers, the trend centers on people washing their hair as infrequently as possible, believing it will train the scalp and hair to look healthier and more beautiful. They also believe the practice will eventually make their scalp less greasy and leave hair in a state where it won't need to be washed as much.The hashtag <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/hairtraining" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#hairtraining</a> has amassed some 164.1 million views on TikTok.In one of the most <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@cherries_87/video/7219312664109976838" target="_blank" rel="noopener">popular TikToks on hair training</a>, hair content creator @cherries_87 said she hadn't washed her hair in 33 days — and that it was only her third time washing her hair this year. The video, posted on April 7, has garnered 5.7 million views and over 613,000 likes."Before I wash my hair I soak my roots in rosemary oil and I do a leave-in conditioner overnight," @cherries87 said in the video, adding that she last washed her hair on March 5, more than a month prior to the date of her video.Several people said they were skeptical of hair training, writing that their hair often looks greasy after a day or two of not washing it."How do you manage to only wash once a month? My scalp gets so itchy after a few days of not washing x," one person commented on @cherries87's video.Another person wrote: "If you only wash it every month that means you only wash your hair 12 times a year. That is so crazy to think."Others said hair training will do wonders for those who want thick, luscious hair. "It's better for your hair if you don't wash it often x," one person commented. But several experts disagree, saying the practice might eventually cause hair loss. Fariha Anwar, an aesthetic doctor at Euromed Clinic Dubai, told the <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health-news/not-washing-your-hair-for-days-can-lead-to-hair-loss-scalp-infection#How-hair-training-can-lead-to-hair-loss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">health website Healthline</a> that not washing your hair can cause excess sebum — an oily substance that coats the skin — to build up on your scalp."For me, the biggest issue with not washing hair regularly is that you could be at risk of developing seborrheic dermatitis, a common skin condition that primarily affects the scalp and is characterized by red, itchy, and inflamed skin," Anwar said. She added that the condition might cause an itchy scalp and that scratching it can lead to hair loss. A 2021 study published in the journal <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8138261/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Skin Appendage Disorders</a> also found that not washing your hair frequently can harm your scalp. Surpriya Punyani et al. studied 1,500 people in China and found that those who washed their hair five to six times a week had healthier scalps.Their research also found that infrequent hair washing can cause scalp sensitivity, leading to an increased risk of hair loss.How often a person should wash their hair depends on their age, skin type, and hair texture, according to the <a href="https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/hair-scalp-care/hair/healthy-hair-tips" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Academy of Dermatology Association</a>. For example, people with curly and coily hair should wash their hair once a week or every other week, <a href="https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/hair-scalp-care/hair/care-african-american" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the AADA's website</a>.But people with <a href="https://www.webmd.com/beauty/why-is-my-hair-so-oily-how-to-manage-oily-hair" target="_blank" rel="noopener">oily scalps and skin types</a> should wash their hair as often as once a day, the AADA stated.It's not the first time hygiene habits have divided people online. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Felicia Leatherwood is a celebrity hairstylist who specializes in natural haircare. </li><li>Leatherwood has worked with celebrities like Issa Rae, Viola Davis, Ava DuVernay, and Jill Scott. </li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Felicia Leatherwood, a celebrity stylist and natural hair expert who's worked in the industry for over two decades. It has been edited for length and clarity.I've been doing hair since I was 16, but on the books, I started professionally in 2000. During my career, I've worked with several celebrities, including Ava DuVernay, Viola Davis, and Issa Rae. I styled Issa's hair on "Insecure," and HBO interviewed me about the looks. It went viral on social media and in that space, I got a lot of DMs of people saying, "Take your flowers." At that moment, I was able to have gratitude for what I've done and what I've built – and then I went back to work. <h2>Don't use combs to detangle natural curls and coils because they don't always break up knots</h2>I wouldn't use a comb because the little teeth of the comb don't always break up the hair, especially if you have what's known as "fairy knots," which is where the strand in the most micro level will loop into itself and create a knot. When you use a <a href="http://www.felicialeatherwood.com/brush" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detangling brush,</a> always start on the ends and work your way toward the scalp while the hair has conditioner on it. Never begin at the scalp when you have natural hair texture or textured hair.<h2>Using non-moisturizing shampoos and products while washing natural hair will cause dryness</h2>Your hair products, including shampoo, should be moisturizing instead.If you have tight curly, or kinky, coarse hair, you should look for a shampoo that softens the hair. One of my tips is to use a conditioning shampoo or add conditioner to a shampoo that dries your hair out. If your hair is straight, wavy, or loosely curled, then you can do a clarifying shampoo because the sebum, which is the oil that naturally comes from the things we eat and creates buildup, is not the best with those textures. Sebum can make straight or loosely curled hair stringy.<h2>I would avoid products that have alcohol </h2><div type="image" title="Black woman styles her natural hair" height="2921" width="3887" msid="100380628" hostid="261" sizebytes="199408"></div>If you read a product's ingredients and see alcohol come up like three times while having 4A to 4C texture hair, I would say, "Don't do it." The alcohol is going to dry your hair out.And I definitely want to make sure that women understand that as a hairstylist, I've talked to so many different types of women. Some say, "I want nothing to do with parabens or sulfates." On the other hand, I've had other women tell me their hair likes parabens and they do not mind over-the-counter products that have sulfates and parabens. So, I often say if you notice that your body, scalp, or skin is sensitive, avoid those chemicals. Also, any ingredient that's in relaxers and perms should not be in your shampoos, conditioners, or anything you use on your hair. I'd also avoid <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-avoid-toxic-chemical-phthalates-in-food-makeup-toiletries-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">phthalates</a> because they're harmful. <h2>Try not to use styling products that won't work with your hair texture</h2><div type="image" title="Black women with natural hair" height="2097" width="3264" msid="100380630" hostid="261" sizebytes="450206"></div>Gels, mousses, and foams are fine for wavy to curly hair, but creams tend to weigh hair down when you're in that loose curl category. Creams can make the hair heavy and mess with the curl.If your hair is coarse, coily, or has a tighter curl, creams are better. Creams and butters work best because they coat and seal the hair's cuticle layers to provide moisture. <h2>Some people with natural hair don't like shrinkage, but don't use a blow dryer too often</h2>Some people really like to stretch their hair because they don't like the shrinkage, but don't use the blow dryer often. Every other week is enough, or two to three times a month.Before using a blow dryer, you'll need a heat protectant because the heat will break the cuticle bonds down on the hair. <h2>With protective styles like braids, make sure not to pull your edges too tight</h2> People should hold their edges when a braider starts with their hair so they can literally release the tension. The client should be able to hold the very tip of that braid at the base of the scalp so that the braider or the hair cells is not pulling the hair, causing traction alopecia.

While anyone can get an infestation, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/drmichellehenry/?hl=en">Dr. Michelle Henry</a>, a board-certified <keyword id="11931736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dermatologist" source="Orion">dermatologist</keyword>, told Insider there is a common misconception that Black people with curly, kinky hair can't get lice. Deborah, a mother from Cleveland, Ohio, <a href="https://www.allure.com/story/can-black-people-get-lice">told Allure</a> she didn't think she could get lice after her biracial daughter with looser Type 2 hair came home with an infestation from school. Two days later, both she and her other daughter, Lauren, had lice."I was looking in the bathroom mirror and [the lice were] kind of tangled up and caught in my hair," <a href="https://www.allure.com/story/can-black-people-get-lice">Lauren told Allure.</a> "I was honestly surprised because I have pretty kinky hair. Thick, coily, 4C hair, styled in locs — so to get lice just didn't make sense to me."Henry said while different hair textures are more well-suited to ward off the critters, anyone can be a host. "It is less frequent," Henry said. "There are all these myths that the hair is inhospitable. That's not the reason."According to data from the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lice/symptoms-causes/syc-20374399">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lice/symptoms-causes/syc-20374399"> (CDC),</a> head lice infestations are less common in curly hair types, but<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lice/symptoms-causes/syc-20374399"></a> Henry says everyone should be aware of the symptoms of the condition, like intense itching, tickling, and finding lice eggs – or nits – in your hair.<h2>Lice infestations often result in an itching, burning scalp</h2>People with a lice infestation may experience tickling, itching, and burning on their scalp, according to <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lice/symptoms-causes/syc-20374399">the CDC</a> . Because lice feed off human blood, they can irritate the scalp by biting it and leave behind bloody scabs. Lice will also lay eggs to reproduce, which cling to hair strands and resemble white specks. Henry says these symptoms should look no different in curly hair types, so if you or your child feel itching or burning, you may want to check for lice. Lice and their eggs are easiest to spot along the nape of the neck and on your ears. <h2>Lice are more common in straight hair, but they can still attach to curly hair </h2>According to Henry, lice are more likely to attach to straight hair because of the shape of the follicle.Henry said people with curly hair have an elliptical follicle that creates hair patterns resembling an "S" that lice have a harder time grasping onto. People with wavy and straight hair have circular follicles that make strands of hair straight. However, Henry said that doesn't mean lice can't attach to curlier hair types like <a href="https://www.allure.com/gallery/curl-hair-type-guide">Type 4 hair</a>.<h2>Treating lice in curly hair types should be approached with the same caution and care as straight hair</h2>Henry told Insider anyone with curly hair who thinks they may have lice should enlist the help of an expert. Rather than wasting time and money trying to cure an infestation with over-the-counter products, Henry recommends calling a dermatologist and making an appointment. "You really wanna make sure that you are getting the most effective treatment earliest, and you're gonna get that treatment at your dermatologist's office," she said.

The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World) Act is <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-the-crown-act-oscars-2020-2">designed to protect people from discrimination</a> based on their hair texture and style. The act has been passed in New York, New Jersey, and California, and Washington state and Minnesota recently passed or introduced similar legislation, as <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/18/black-haircare-startup-naza-beauty-just-raised-1-million-from-alexis-ohanians-initialized-capital/">TechCrunch's Megan Rose Dickey</a> reports.And the Kickstarter-funded short film Hair Love, after garnering <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-funded-hair-love-wins-academy-award-for-best-animate">$284,058</a> in pledging on the crowdfunding site, won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, proving that personal stories depicting and celebrating black hair and heritage are valued and deserve funding, despite the lack of mainstream studio interest.For Montgomery, founding her company is, of course, personal. She told Business Insider that her earliest hair memories are not the fun ones you would think of. Her mother did her hair until she was seven, at which time she turned to a salon for braids, a session that took nine hours. That, she said, is a very normal experience for women of color with textured hair."I've been doing that once a month, every month, since then," she said. Over the last weekend of August, she <a href="https://www.insider.com/adele-bantu-knots-jamaican-flag-bikini-cultural-appropriation-photo-reactions-2020-8">posted a tribute to Notting Hill Carnival</a> — which was was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2020/aug/30/notting-hill-carnival-online-is-more-relevant-than-ever-says-director">held online this year</a> due to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/coronavirus">coronavirus</a> pandemic — wearing bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini top."Adele accused of cultural appropriation over Instagram picture," <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/01/adele-accused-of-cultural-appropriation-over-instagram-picture" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote the Guardian</a>, while <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1329766/Piers-Morgan-rant-Adele-controversy-backlash-cultural-appropriation-GMB-ITV-video" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Daily Express</a> went for: "Piers Morgan rages at cultural appropriation mob over Adele controversy."However, the words underneath Adele's photo tell a different story. Rather than an angry "mob," Caribbean people flooded the comments telling her to ignore the backlash because what she was really doing was appreciating Jamaican culture, not appropriating it."Tell the haters to step off!" one commenter wrote. "You are a product of Multicultural Britain, so it's not cultural appropriation."Another fan said that "we Jamaicans love you" and there was "no cultural appropriation here.""Thanks for honoring us and highlighting the powerful influence Jamaican culture has in the UK and around the world!" they said. "We have your back on this one all the way!!! 'Out Of Many One People' is our nation's motto and we live it! If you come with love and respect, Jamaica has love for you!"<div type="image" title="black lives matter protests " height="1666" width="2222" msid="77947596" hostid="261"></div>Branding expert Carole Pyke, who works with companies to help build acceptance and normalize representation of people of color, said she didn't see Adele's photo through the eyes of cultural appropriation."At a time when the August tradition of carnival on the streets of Notting Hill was canceled, I saw it as a woman celebrating the carnival vibe with its freedom and vibrancy," she told Insider. "A reminder to us all that even though life, as we know it, has changed we can still choose how we navigate our way through it."The appropriation vs. appreciation debate has been going on for years, but it is particularly prevalent right now amid the growing <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black Lives Matter</keyword> movement. People who have been oppressed are speaking out against racism and prejudice louder than ever, so it's particularly obvious when a predominantly white company, group, or individual enjoys or profits off other <keyword id="381424" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cultures">cultures</keyword> without standing up for the lives of people of color.<h2>Cultural appropriation or appreciation?</h2>Saurav Dutt, the author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Butterfly-Room-Saurav-Dutt/dp/1981050493/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=&amp;sr=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Butterfly Room,</a>" which explores racism and interracial relationships within Indian society, told Insider that enjoying something and being fascinated by it doesn't mean you are appropriating it."Cultural appropriation arises when people, anyone, takes aspects of another culture specifically to mock or disrespect them," he said. "What seems to draw the ire of cultural appropriation activists are the less respectful instances where someone will use an item from another culture to ridicule or patronize the other group."For cofounder of The Rum Kitchen Stevie Thomas, who was previously a "Shipwrecked" contestant, the cultural appropriation conversation hits home. He <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/17/mixed-up-money-and-schooling-opens-doors-but-ive-always-been-an-underdog-because-of-my-race-10347655/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talked to Metro in 2019</a> about growing up around mostly white middle-class people in Notting Hill, and how he struggled to connect to his identity of having a heritage that's half Welsh, a quarter Jamaican, one-eighth Irish, and one-eighth Portuguese. Opening up The Rum Kitchen in London was his way of finally connecting to his roots.Thomas told Insider the difference between taking advantage and appreciating a culture ultimately comes down to where your heart sits."Adele appreciates and loves the culture. You can feel her heart has always been in the right place," he said. "Black culture has been used, abused, and rehashed for a white marketplace way before Adele's hair, Elvis's hip-shaking, and Eminem's lyrical flow."The problem starts when greed gets in the way of giving back to certain communities and cultures, such as when restaurant investors who originally intended to appreciate and celebrate end up caring more about money."The difference is what happens next," Thomas said. "You can appreciate the music, the <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword>, the love of the people — but appropriating is where you take the influences you see and completely copy them for your own gain."<h2>Kim Kardashian's 'Bo Derek braids'</h2>Natalie Rita, the managing director of PR company NRPR, works with many POC influencers on a daily basis. She told Insider appropriation happens if you show love and appreciation for parts of a culture, such as clothing, hairstyles, or accessories, but remain prejudiced against its people. For example, wearing African braids or a Hindu bindi while spending no time educating yourself about their origins or the culture surrounding them is "picking and choosing which part of a culture you want to participate in," she said."In a nutshell, people need to know whether they're respecting a culture or ripping them off," Rita said. "People need to ask themselves: 'Do I understand the significance of what I'm doing here?,' 'Am I honoring this culture or just imitating it?,' and most importantly, 'Will I offend anyone who belongs to this culture?'"The Kardashians are often criticized for wearing their hair in Black styles without really acknowledging where they came from. Kim Kardashian, for example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/kim-kardashian-cultural-appropriation-accusations-bo-derek-braids-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called her cornrows "Bo Derek braids"</a> — a reference to the actresses' hairstyle when she played Jenny Hanley the 1979 film "10."<div type="image" title="Kim Kardashian corn rows" height="1500" width="2000" msid="77947599" hostid="261"></div>Bayo Adelaja, a diversity and inclusion expert, is the leader of <a href="https://www.doitnownow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Do it Now Now</a>, an organization "committed to bringing social empowerment to Black communities across the globe." She told Insider Kardashian's comments made it sound like Black people hadn't been wearing braids for decades before Derek's character came along."[It] reminded people that despite profiting off of Black culture for all of her career, she doesn't care about it at all," she said. "When Zendaya wore Locks on the red carpet, she was denigrated by a style guru on the E! channel, but when Kendall Jenner wears Locks on a runway, the style is chic and fashion-forward."In the real world, this can translate to a Black woman wearing her hair naturally, only for it to be called "unprofessional," "ghetto," or "too ethnic," Adelaja said, then when a white person does it, it's lauded as cool and edgy.Natalie J Monty and her sister run an Instagram haircare page for Black and multiracial women and girls called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/got.coils/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@got.coils</a>. The sisters, who are from London, set up the page in 2019 as a way to celebrate natural hair and give advice about how to style it.Monty told Insider she has seen a great deal of cultural appropriation of African hairstyles from European brands and individuals since then, claiming many styles and looks as their own. She's also seen European women think they are being innovative for wearing wigs to grow out their hair, or silk wraps to protect it at night."That's actually something that many Black and Asian women have been doing for, I'd say, definitely over 100 years," she said. "It's something that's been taught from past generations ... So it makes women of color feel uncomfortable at times."<h2>Context and upbringing matters</h2>Adelaja said the context also matters in how things are worn. Rita Ora, for example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/rita-ora-race-blackfishing-twitter-realizes-parents-white-albanian-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received backlash for "Black-fishing"</a> with her looks when people found out she is white Albanian/Estonian with no Black heritage. However, she was brought up in an area of London which had a high population of Black people and rose to fame when artists such as Beyonce, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna were dominating pop music.Ora had grown up with Black culture, so it made sense it would become part of her style. Cultural appropriation, on the other hand, is like wearing someone else's heritage as a costume, "as if you were trying to tap into some alter ego or reverse some otherworldly version of yourself," Adelaja said."They are doing it to stand out from the crowd in their own context of life," she said. "That is when a culture becomes a trend or a fad. That is hurtful to those who come across the actions of those individuals because it devalues their culture and turns it into something that is only valuable as an accessory."<div type="image" title="Kahlen Barry" height="720" width="960" msid="77947601" hostid="261"></div>It's also important to match your intentions to your actions. Influencer and musician Kahlen Barry recently spoke out about how his ex-friend Tana Mongeau treated him when they worked together, <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-racist-tweets-allegations-response-to-her-past-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accusing her of gaslighting and racist microaggressions</a>.He told Insider Mongeau doesn't address accusations of racism in her past, but then profits off Black culture by making rap and hip hop music. He said this is a huge problem within the music and entertainment industries."You're disrespecting our people, but then you're making music that comes from our community," he said. "If you're treating people in our community badly, or you're being microaggressive and racist towards us, and then you're trying to use our culture for capital gain, that's appropriation."<h2>It's always good to be mindful</h2>Monty said it's definitely a good idea to speak to someone you know from a cultural group before you display something originally from their background on your person. You don't have to erase other cultures from your wardrobe altogether, but maybe question how they got there in the first place."I do believe people have freedom of speech and freedom of action," she said. "Therefore if you happen to be a white lady who wanted to just wear your hair in braids because you've always liked braids, then go ahead girl."Overall, everyone would benefit from a little more awareness of where their clothing, hairstyle, or accessories come from, hopefully, one day eliminating the mockery and erasure that makes cultural appropriation so harmful."You don't always have to have a history lesson behind your choices," said Monty. After a few weeks of using my customized Function of Beauty products, my hair has been reinvigorated and overall feels softer and less dry. It's been a year since I did my big chop. Ever since then I've been particular about the products I use and have been consistent with my routine. The packaging of these products was beautiful. I loved how my name was printed on the bottles and on the direction booklet. I followed all the directions except one: to cleanse or condition three to four times per week. For those with coily hair (who don't rock wash-and-gos) you know washing too often can strip the much-needed moisture from your hair. Also, I would never make it to work on time. I did my normal routine washing once a week in the shower, followed by moisturizing with <a href="https://amzn.to/2LCSPNM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uncle Funky's Daughter Extra Butter</a>, and then styling with mousse. After one month of using the products, I don't think Function of Beauty is right for me. My hair felt clean, the pineapple smelled amazing, and my twists still looked great. It's frizzy and dry one day, oily the next. I usually alternate between a slew of hair-care products each week - my attempt at giving my hair everything it needs. I was excited to try Function of Beauty and try to slim down my hair-care routine. Doing the hair quiz was quick and fun. I chose the following goals for my wavy and fine hair: lengthen, reduce brassiness, color protection, oil control, and volumize. While <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clairol-shimmer-lights-purple-shampoo-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I love Clairol's iteration</a>, I had recently had a hair treatment that required I use sulfate-free shampoo, so I was happy to get this new sulfate-free brass banisher. My favorite parts of Function of Beauty are the customization features. I love the light peachy scent, the cute purple colors, and the bottle which is sweetly labeled "Function of Remi". All of these aspects make washing my hair a little more fun. It doesn't hurt that the bottles look absolutely adorable in your shower.In terms of how well the products are working, I've been using them for over a month and am still not really sure. To the touch, my hair feels very clean and soft, but I haven't noticed a real change in volume or how long it takes my hair to get greasy. Since sulfates can over-dry the hair (and humid summer weather is not the time to tempt such problems), I've been trying to find a sulfate-free formula that I really like - and Function of Beauty did the job. The personalization test is a nice touch - I already knew my bottles wouldn't have a host of <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=EHFxW6yx8Uo&amp;mid=43603&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.functionofbeauty.com%2Fabout%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">potentially bad ingredients</a>, but a personalized formula meant I felt assured that they would actually have all the ingredients that I specifically needed in their stead (like those combating brassiness in color-treated hair, rebuilding strands, boosting shine, and taming frizz). I also loved the ability to choose a big bottle of conditioner and a smaller bottle of shampoo - for perhaps the first time ever, I won't run out of conditioner before shampoo. In practice, the formula is really good. It smells fresh and clean (my preferred scents), and manages to make my hair feel clean, lightweight, and keep frizz to a minimum without dampening volume. I shower at night and let my hair air dry, and my waves seem to look more uniform, though not exactly glossy. I could still be using too much shampoo. Either way, I really love the effect and am fine supplementing with a hair mask in my routine. And, while not as important as the formula, it doesn't hurt that the bottles look so nice in my bathroom.
