He never touches the wheel, never touches a pedal, but he's just as important as the driver. And all those words he's saying — they're directions.</p><p><keyword id="80572" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="rallying">Rallying</keyword> is hands down one of the most dangerous motorsports around. Drivers race down narrow public roads covered in everything from dirt and gravel to snow and ice at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Instead of drivers <keyword id="6360432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="RACING">racing</keyword> all at once, they go one by one around sharp blind corners and fly hundreds of feet off of sudden jumps.</p><p>Just like airplane pilots have their copilots, rally drivers have a co-driver sitting right next to them during each race. The codriver's main job is to read out loud a series of prewritten directions called "pacenotes" that the driver uses to navigate each stage. It's these notes that allow the driver to continue at full speed without hesitating at the courses' most dangerous sections in order to get the best possible time.</p><p>One of the codriver's most important jobs starts days before the race has even begun during an activity known as "recce."</p><p><strong>Krista Skucas: </strong>During recce is when the driver and codriver will take a car out, and that is when they go out onto the stage roads and write the notes they'll be using while they are racing. So, this is done at low speeds, 35 mph is usually tops. The mental strain that it takes to just 100% focus on the road in front of you for sometimes 45 minutes to an hour of just paying attention to every deviation in the road and not missing anything.</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>But while recce may seem time consuming and mind numbing, mistakes made or obstacles missed during it can lead to some of the biggest disasters. Nicolas Gilsoul, co-driver to one of the world's best rally drivers, Thierry Neuville, explained just how important recce is to a team's success — and safety.</p><p><strong>Nicolas Gilsoul: </strong>We had last year a big accident with Thierry, but it was not due to misunderstanding. It was due to the fact that during the recce we did it in the fog, and the visibility was really bad. So we were driving quite slow, even slower than usually, and we underestimated the angle of a turn.</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>Co-drivers have all kinds of strategies they use when writing pacenotes, and they'll have them written to read either horizontally or vertically. Krista gave us a look at how she does hers with an example she took with driver Sam Albert during their recce before Olympus Rally.</p><p><strong>Kristas: </strong>So, a series of notes is right here. Always end in a distance <strong>(points to the 80 and 60)</strong> so you have time to circle back around and get to your next note. So this is "4++ left 80 hug 5 right 80. 5+ left into 5+ right tightens 4++ 60."</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>While that series of numbers and symbols may sound like gibberish, it's actually fairly simple. The numbers one through six refer to the severity of an upcoming turn, one being the sharpest and six being the most gradual. The pluses and minuses are used as modifiers for turns that don't quite fit into being labeled just a full one or six.</p><p>Simple miscommunication with those notes, though, can have some of the worst consequences, like at 2018's Tour de Corse when codriver Paul Nagle called out a wrong pacenote to his driver, Kris Meeke, sending the pair flying off the track. By calling out "five left," Nagle instructed Meeke to keep the car in fifth gear for a gradual left turn but ended up sending the pair 30 mph into what ended up being a tight corner.</p><p>But codrivers need to be able to do more than simply read and write directions. Co-driver and driver need to be able to handle breakdowns and mechanical issues with the car by themselves with a limited supply of tools.</p><p>A famous example occurred in 2002's Acropolis Rally when codriver Phil Mills had to repair his driver Petter Solberg's loose steering wheel <em>while</em> they continued driving.</p><p><strong>Nicolas: </strong>We have to sort out mechanical issues or damage on the car. And we only have a few tools on board, so sometimes we have to suddenly become MacGyver. For example, in 2014, I remember really well in Rally Mexico, we had a leak in the engine's cooling system. We had to refill the tank, but not with water because we didn't have any with us. We had a big bottle of Corona beer, and we were able to use the liquid to solve the situation.</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>And then there are situations you just can't predict. At 2018's Rally Mexico, locals had set a trap for drivers by closing a large metal cattle gate, forcing co-driver Anders Jaeger to get out of the car and open it himself.</p><p><strong> </strong>As expected, blindly following your co-driver's directions requires an intense level of trust between the two teammates. This method of driving leaves little to no room for error from either person.</p><p><strong>Nicolas: </strong>Something which is really a key and you need to understand with our sport is we are working like what I call a mirror of confidence. Thierry needs to trust me and what I'm telling him while we're driving through the stage in the same way I need to trust him to be 100% confident about how he's driving, how he's approaching each turn through the stages.</p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>So while a rally team's success obviously depends on the talent and skills of its driver, just as much pressure sits on the shoulders of its co-driver. It's because of codrivers and all the duties that come with being one that the team's wheelman can focus on just one thing: driving. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Jost Capito, boss of the Williams F1 team, helped the outfit improve drastically last season.</li><li>In the new series of Netflix show "Drive to Survive," Capito detailed his unique methods to inspire drivers.</li></ul><p>Of all the methods of trying to drag an athlete out of a poor run of form, Jost Capito's might be the strangest, and most inappropriate.</p><p>Capito, one of the most successful motorsport directors in World Rally Championship history, took over as CEO of the Williams Racing <keyword id="11953260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="formula-one" source="Orion">Formula One</keyword> team in December 2020 following the resignation of Claire Williams.</p><p>He was later named as team principal in June 2021, mid-way through the 2021 F1 season. </p><p>Williams was struggling at the time Capito took over the team, with drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi both struggling to break into the top 10 of the F1 grid and score points.</p><p>Speaking after his appointment on season four of the popular Netflix series "Drive to Survive," Capito said he hoped he could change the team's fortunes for the second half of the season before revealing an unusual method by which he once whipped a driver into shape during his time in rallying.</p><p>"Ive got one story from rally," he said. "One of the drivers lost the confidence in the car and I said to the co-driver, 'Squeeze his balls.'</p><p>"And he said, 'What?!' I said, 'Squeeze his balls.'</p><p>"So I asked a couple of seconds later, 'Did you squeeze his balls?' And he said, 'Yes.' And I asked the driver, 'Did you feel your balls?' And he said, 'Yes.'</p><p>"I said, 'OK, now you know you've got balls, go for it.'"</p><p>Though it's unclear whether Capito used the unusual method on Russell or Latifi, his arrival had a positive impact on the drivers with both enjoying a much improved second half of the campaign.</p><p>Latifi managed two top 10 finishes at the Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix, while Russell managed four top 10 finishes, including an impressive second place finish in the curtailed race in Belgium, where he finished on the podium after a two-lap race, having qualified second on Saturday.</p><div type="image" title="Second place qualifier George Russell of Great Britain and Williams celebrates in parc ferme during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps" height="1333" width="2000" msid="90059528" hostid="261"></div><p>Capito will be without Russell for the 2022 F1 season after he joined Mercedes to team up with Lewis Hamilton.</p><p>The former Red Bull driver Alexander Albon has been drafted in to replace the Englishman, with Capito revealing after pre-season testing in Barcelona that he has been impressed with the 25-year-old's start to life at Williams.</p><p>"I'm very impressed, he is very good on the information he gives on evaluating the car," Capito said, <a href="https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/williams-albon-has-exceeded-expectations-in-first-weeks/8747256/">according to Autosport.</a></p><p>"He is quite calm. He has a very good feeling for the car. He worked well with the engineers and with the overall team. I think is the right balance between nice guy and when he is in the car, he understands it. He's pushing and he is a fighter.</p><p>"I expected him to be really good within the team, but he exceeded my expectations."</p><p><em>Season four of "Drive to Survive" premieres on Netflix on March 11.</em></p>

Mumbai, Apr 8 () Tata Motors on Wednesday said it is focusing on the supply of essentials to the communities most affected the COVID-19 lockdown, facilitating production of protective gears and medical kits to curb spread of COVID-19 as part of its CSR initiative.<p> The company has so far provided over 25,000 packets of cooked meals and over 5,000 grocery kits (ration) to migrants and stranded communities, urban slums, drivers, co-drivers, mechanics, contractual and temporary workers, among others as part of the initiative, Tata Motors said in a release.</p><p> In addition to this, the company has established two helpline numbers for temporary and contractual workmen for food related requests in Lucknow and is providing water to 19 police stations and traffic police in Pune, it said.</p><p> Tata Motors also said it has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation to distribute food packets and personal protective kits to truck drivers visiting companies "Saarthi Aaram Kendra (SAK)" in Narsapura (near Bengaluru) and Bawal (near Gurugram).</p><p> Besides, the company is supporting and assisting self-help groups to manufacture home-made certified masks and sanitisers for distribution across hospitals, vendors, health-workers, police stations, army personnel and in communities around the company's plants. </p> Till date, the company has enabled the manufacturing of 17,000 home-made certified masks, it said, adding that it has also facilitated N95 masks, sanitisers and personal protective equipment kits that are being distributed to municipal hospitals. He signed off with his professional name: "With relish, Zach n Cheese."</p><p>Even through email, Chatham's enthusiasm is palpable, as is his commitment to the bit.</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._9" height="3749" width="2500" msid="80435483" hostid="261"></div>It's easy to see why: Chatham, along with his codriver "Ketchup Katie" Ferguson, are Hotdoggers for Oscar Mayer, a position the company's <a href="https://heinz.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/KraftHeinz_Careers/job/Virtual-USA/Wienermobile-Spokesperson_R-33458">currently hiring for</a>. While the job might not sound familiar right off the bun, you'll recognize their ride: the garish, orange-and-yellow Wienermobile that's shaped like a massive hot dog. <h2><strong>It's barbe-cute</strong></h2><p>At 27 feet long, 11 feet tall, and eight feet wide, the Wienermobile is a bus-sized celebrity in which Chatham and Ferguson travel the nation, building the Oscar Mayer brand and making peoples' days. It doesn't fit under any clearance below its 11-foot height, nor can it squeeze through a drive-thru.</p><p>"However, we do fit in gas stations," Chatham told Insider during a call, "and we fill up with high octane-mustard!"</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._4" height="3333" width="2500" msid="80435484" hostid="261"></div><p>The Wienermobile has gull-wing style doors ("Lamboweenie," Chatham supplied helpfully), ketchup-and-mustard-colored seats, and a bunbox instead of a glovebox. Passengers can ride shotbun and are asked to fasten their meatbelts.</p><p>Keeping with the times, there's even a backup camera, although the two are trained to guide and help each other when backing into places. </p><h2>The adventure of a lifetime</h2><p>If you couldn't guess already, Chatham and Ferguson don't exactly have a typical day on the job.</p><p>"You have to be incredibly flexible to work this job," Ferguson said. "We go to a city for a week to two weeks, do birthday party drive-bys, farmer's market visits, and go to museums. We've driven on racetracks. And we do events and media interviews. The only consistency is how much joy it brings people."</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._8" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80435485" hostid="261"></div><p>It's hard to say whether the Wienermobile or Chatham and Ferguson have gained a bigger following. "We collect a fan club of people who follow us at our events," Ferguson explained. Sort of like people following a band on tour. </p><p>"Zach had a fan club of high school boys in Minnesota," Ferguson went on. "I met a couple who ended up following us all over the Midwest. They call me, too, and like to come out to see us in cities."</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._6" height="1875" width="2500" msid="80435487" hostid="261"></div>And the mustard-asked question of all? People wonder if Chatham and Ferguson sleep in the Wienermobile in between stops.<p>"We don't sleep in it," Ferguson said. "It's not a weeniebago!"</p><h2><strong>Bringing joy and meat</strong></h2><p>The two started driving the Wienermobile in July 2020 and they'll wrap up their tour this coming June. Like everyone else, the COVID-19 pandemic put them in a pickle. </p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._3" height="2000" width="2500" msid="80435488" hostid="261"></div>Oscar Mayer pulled the Wienermobiles off the road for the first few months of the pandemic. They returned to the roads this past August. Chatham said that they've been following all CDC guidelines all along the way.<p>"The Wienermobile started as an Oscar Mayer initiative in 1936 during the Great Depression to bring joy to people," he said, tracing the parallels. "We've been able to change people's days right now during COVID. They see us on the road, they honk and get excited."</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._2" height="2705" width="2500" msid="80435492" hostid="261"></div>Last September, Chatham <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7PQjuAT0X/">got engaged</a> in front of the Wienermobile in Yellowstone National Park. Ferguson relayed a story where she once got to drive the Wienermobile as a pace car at a racetrack for three laps in Colorado. Chatham's own great-grandfather drove the Wienermobile in the 1970s and Ferguson's grandmother had a similar job with a hot dog company.</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._5" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80435494" hostid="261"></div>Once you've driven the US and you have pockets of friends and memories in all parts of it, it doesn't feel quite as vast.<p>"It seemed like an adventure of a lifetime," Ferguson said.</p><h2><strong>They're hiring, by the way</strong></h2><p>At any point, there are six Wienermobiles driving around the US, according to <a href="https://www.oscarmayer.com/wienermobile">Oscar Mayer</a>. The Wienermobile from 1969 had a Chevrolet motorhome frame and Ford Thunderbird taillights. In 2017, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nWXcboDjqo&amp;feature=emb_titleitle">the company expanded the fleet</a> to include the Wienermini, Wiener Rover, Wienercycle, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oscar-mayer-debuts-wienerdrone-2017-6">Wienerdrone</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._7" height="3333" width="2500" msid="80435497" hostid="261"></div><p>If any of that appeals to you, here's some good news: You have a chance to become a Hotdogger yourself. "The three requirements are a college education, a driver's license, and an appetite for adventure."</p><div type="image" title="Wienermobile._1" height="1901" width="2500" msid="80435502" hostid="261"></div>"You need to be trustworthy because the vehicle is valuable," Chatham added. "You have to be creative to come up with content and marketing ideas and be personable to represent the brand well. There's discipline involved." <p>As for the plethora of puns? Surely there's a handbook of them hidden away somewhere at Hot Dog High.</p><p>"You gotta have that Hotdogger sparkle," Ferguson said. "Buns of buns of puns."</p>

The courses tend to be rugged and almost always require the drivers to do some serious off-roading. </p><p>Recently, the Oregon Trail Rally took place right near Portland, Oregon. </p><p>The event was part of Rally America, which is one of the biggest rallying events in the US. Rally America is hosting eight different national-level events in 2016 where racers can take their cars out on miles and miles of open rally stages and compete for the best overall time.</p><p>As it is at most rallies, dirt and rocks were sprayed everywhere, a bunch of very loud and incredibly fast cars were raced, and a group of talented drivers and co-drivers were going hard.</p><p>Subaru took the overall win with its top-class #75 WRX STI rally car driven by David Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew. Anything above 50 signals growth, while anything below means a contraction in activity - so the higher the better. Wednesday's data is the final data of the month, following on from Markit's flash readings in late April.</span></span></p><p><span>Markit's statement alongside the data said (emphasis ours): </span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"> </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The rate of eurozone economic expansion remained only modest in April. Output rose at a pace slightly below the average seen in the opening quarter of the year, with <strong>only moderate growth seen in both the manufacturing and service sectors.</strong>"</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"<strong>The 'big-four' nations all reported expansions of economic activity in April</strong>, with Spain seeing the steepest rate of increase. Output growth in Spain accelerated to a three-month high, despite a slower rate of increase for new business. Italy also saw a modest improvement in its rate of output expansion."</p><p><span>Here's what Chris Williamson, Markit's chief economist had to say (emphasis ours):</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>The final PMI data confirm the earlier flash estimate that the eurozone economy grew at a steady but unspectacular annual rate of 1.5% at the start of the second quarter. Prices charged also continued to fall, indicating that growth is being partly fuelled by price discounting. </span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>However, while still tepid, <strong>the sustained eurozone growth contrasts with slowdowns in the US and <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, suggesting the ECB's more aggressive stimulus is helping to drive a steady recovery.</strong></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Further comfort can be drawn from the upturn in service sector business optimism for the year ahead, which has edged up since the start of the year to signal<strong> one of the highest degrees of sentiment seen over the past five years. </strong></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"> </p><p><span>Here are the headline eurozone figures:</span></p><ul><li><strong>Composite PMI: </strong>53.0, in line with the flash estimate, but down 0.1 from March's 53.1 reading.</li><li><strong>Services PMI: </strong>53.1, down from the 53.2 flash estimate, but flat since March</li></ul><p><span>Markit's chart shows just how much Europe is struggling to find substantially, sustainable growth right now. Here's how things look across Europe's individual economies.</p><ul><li><strong style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">German Composite: </strong>53.6, an 11-month low and down from 54 in March.</li><li><strong>German Services:  </strong>54.5, down from 55.1 in March to a six-month low.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>French Composite:</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> 50.2, up from 50 in March to a three-month high.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>French Services: </strong>50.6, a five-month high, and out of contraction. The March reading was 49.9.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Italian Services: </strong>52.1, a beat on the 51.7 reading expected, and well up from March's 13-month low of 51.2.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Spanish Services: </strong>55.1, down from 55.3 in March, but ahead of the 55 expected.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Greek Manufacturing:</strong></li></ul><p>The PMI figures come just a couple of weeks <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/european-central-bank-press-conference-april-21-2016-4">after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi reiterated his belief that the bank's monetary policy measures are working to address sluggish growth and inflation in Europe</a>. <br /><br /><span>"</span><span>Overall, our measures in place since June 2014 have clearly improved borrowing conditions for firms and households" Draghi said at a press conference after the ECB left all of its bases rates unchanged on April 21.</span></p><p><span>Draghi did admit however, that risks to growth in the eurozone are "tilted to the downside."
