As named by the RBI in its order yesterday, <keyword id="20146314" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asirvad-Microfinance" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Asirvad Microfinance" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Asirvad Microfinance">Asirvad Microfinance</keyword>, Arohan Financial Services, DMI Finance, and Navi Finserv failed to adhere to the <keyword id="21471399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fair-Practices-Code" source="keywords">Fair Practices Code</keyword> and did not properly assess borrower's income and repayment capacities before disbursing loans, especially when it came to their microfinance loans. Additionally, these companies also resorted to dubious asset classifications and incomplete interest rate and fee disclosures, which in turn led to alarming practices like loan evergreening and more. RBI also found that the weighted average lending rate (WALR) and the interest spread charged over their cost of funds by these NBFCs were over the stipulated norms. Earlier this month, the apex had already issued a stern warning to the NBFC sector, discouraging them from pursuing aggressive loan book expansion at the cost of regulations and fair practices. Per the bank, it would be ideal if NBFCs self-corrected their ways and refrained from giving incentives and fixed targets to their employees for granting loans. As for these four NBFCs, RBI flagged significant deviations with respect to Income Recognition and Asset Classification (IR&amp;AC) norms in their functioning and gross mismanagement of their gold loan portfolios. As RBI noted, these NBFCs had outsourced several of their core financial services as well. The restrictions on these 4 NBFCs will be effective at the close of business as of October 21, 2024. But this will not affect the existing, active loans of the companies. Also, loan collection and recovery processes will also continue in line with existing guidelines. However, Morgan Stanley, in a recent report, has questioned this move, asking whether lending rates alone were the cause for concern by RBI against specified NBFCs or whether broader issues are at play. "Based on an observation of lending rate data collated and presented by MFIN (the industry body for microfinance lenders), we note that Asirvad Microfinance's lending rates are not very different from other lenders," the report said. The report also observes that more regulatory action might follow in the sector, but the intention here was not to shut down new lending by <keyword id="21739781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microfinance-institutions" source="keywords">microfinance institutions</keyword> and NBFCs entirely. RBI's restrictions will stay in place until these NBFCs show that they have fully aligned their practices with regulatory guidelines. In response, Navi Finserv Limited has noted that it is committed to conducting its business operations with the highest standards of compliance, customer service, and transparency. "The company is reviewing the directions received from the Hon’ble Reserve Bank of India and will work with them and address all the concerns raised with promptness and completeness," it further added.

An interesting addition of the law is that in the event of an arrest, the individual has the right to inform a person of his choice about his or her situation. This will ensure immediate support and assistance to the arrested individual. Besides, arrest details will now be prominently displayed within police stations and district headquarters, allowing families and friends of the arrested person easy access to important information. To strengthen the case and investigations, it has become mandatory for forensic experts to visit crime scenes for serious offences and collect evidence. Additionally, the process of evidence collection at the crime scene will be mandatorily videographed to prevent tampering of evidence. This dual approach significantly enhances the quality and reliability of investigations and contributes to a fair administration of justice, the sources said. The new laws prioritised the investigations for offences against women and children, ensuring timely completion within two months of recording information. Under the new law, victims are entitled to regular updates on the progress of their case within 90 days. This provision keeps the victims informed and involved in the legal process, enhancing transparency and trust. The new laws guarantee free first-aid or medical treatment to victims of crimes against women and children at all hospitals. This provision ensures immediate access to essential medical care, prioritising the well-being and recovery of victims during challenging times. Summons can now be served electronically, expediting the legal processes, reducing paperwork and ensuring efficient communication between all parties involved. For certain offences against women, statements of the victim are to be recorded, as far as practicable, by a woman magistrate and in her absence, by a male magistrate in the presence of a woman to ensure sensitivity and fairness, creating a supportive environment for victims. Both the accused and the victim are entitled to receive copies of the FIR, police report, chargesheet, statements, confessions and other documents within 14 days. Courts grant a maximum of two adjournments to avoid unnecessary delays in case hearings, ensuring timely justice delivery. The new laws mandate all state governments to implement witness protection scheme to ensure the safety and cooperation of witnesses and enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of legal proceedings. The definition of "gender" now includes transgender individuals, promoting inclusivity and equality. By conducting all legal proceedings electronically, the new laws offer convenience to victims, witnesses and accused, thereby streamlining and expediting the entire legal process. In order to provide more protection to the victim and enforce transparency in investigation related to an offence of rape, the statement of the victim shall be recorded through audio video means by the police. Women, persons below 15 years, persons above 60 years and those with disabilities or acute illness are exempt from attending police stations and can receive police assistance at their place of residence. A new chapter has been added in BNS specifically to address offences against women and children, ensuring focused protection and justice. Various offences against women and children have been made gender-neutral in BNS, covering all victims and perpetrators regardless of gender. The new laws introduce community service for minor offences in order to promote personal growth and social responsibility of an individual. Under community service, the offenders get the chance to positively contribute to society, learn from their mistakes and build stronger community bonds. Under the new laws, the fines imposed for certain crimes have been aligned with the severity of the offences, ensuring fair and proportional punishment, deterring future offences and maintaining public trust in the legal system. The legal processes have been simplified to make them easier to understand and follow, ensuring fair and accessible justice. The new laws promise a faster and fair resolution of cases, instilling confidence in the legal system. The legislations were considered and passed by Parliament in its winter session in 2023. I got the job in 2006 and made it my mission to create such an undeniable presence at the company that my transition into full-time employment would be guaranteed. Then, I finally quit.<h2 id="0bc8f83a-d285-4460-8459-846082b8e35e">I graduated with a degree in creative writing and transitioned into tech</h2>In my last semester as a creative writing undergrad at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/learning/university-of-washington-free-online-courses">University of Washington</a>, I asked my writing workshop professor what the job landscape for writers looked like. He told me there's no job called writer, there's only a job called waiter. I took his comment to heart and pivoted my job search to programming.Both of my parents are engineers and I'd been programming since I was little, plus I double minored in math and applied math, so I felt like I was three-quarters of the way to being a software engineer. I ended up falling in love with it.<h2 id="8ef80748-4f9f-4b59-924e-5d666ec12198">A friend helped me land a contract role at Amazon</h2>Shortly after I graduated, I was grabbing drinks with a buddy from high school who was working at Amazon. He knew of a job opening at Amazon for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-salaries-what-it-pays-engineers-analysts-and-other-workers-2023-5">support engineer role </a>and guaranteed me he could snag me an interview. The job was a contract role, and my responsibility would be to identify and resolve computer issues. It felt software engineer-adjacent, so I took him up on the opportunity and got the job at $35 per hour.I quickly got into the rhythm of the day-to-day job and didn't find my responsibilities challenging. For half the day I found myself with no other work to complete, so I utilized my free time to learn new programming skills and create a presence at the company.<h2 id="94b439a5-d0eb-41f3-a3a1-8daab9eeda7b">I went above and beyond at Amazon to get promoted from contract to full-time</h2>Amazon is a pretty transparent place so I took advantage of its internal Wikipedia to download as much information as possible about its coding systems. I let my curiosity drive me down a rabbit hole and soaked up as much information from internal sources as I could.I also made a concerted effort to insert myself into the software development department and create an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-revamp-your-work-image-persona-career-coach-2024-8">undeniable presence at the company</a>. For example, if a customer came to me with a website issue due to a software bug, my job as a support person would be to file a bug report. Instead, I'd file the bug report and immediately locate the impacted piece of code and file a fix for it. Software engineers had to review my changes, but I forged a trusting relationship with them by effectively contributing to their jobs. I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-network-for-new-job-microsoft-vp-hr-explains-2024-6">slowly networked my way</a> into monthly software engineer meetings and steadily expanded my frontier of exposure within the group.<h2 id="f7130472-f87b-4a44-8344-1b0f01f22794">After 5 years my salary grew by over $25,000</h2>In late 2007, I felt ready for a new role and decided to interview for a lateral move within the company. I was only supposed to reach out to one department for job opportunities at a time, but I contacted and secured interviews with three departments.To prepare for the interviews, I pooled colleagues for questions they remembered being asked during their interviews and created a comprehensive database. Then I asked my new software engineer friends to give me <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mock-interviews-chatgpt-land-jobs-ex-disney-recruiter-2024-2">mock interviews</a>. I ended up getting job offers from all three departments I interviewed for.I accepted a job in payments as a software development engineer for $75,000 where my role was to perform high-scale backend transaction processing. The job was boring from the outside, but we were playing with some pretty big numbers which kept it interesting. I stayed in that role for nearly five years before being promoted to senior development engineer in 2012 with a base salary of $107,000.<h2 id="a9d32667-b6cc-4a86-82c0-6079110c86bc">I sacrificed my chances of promotion to work on a product I loved</h2>Four years after I became a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/senior-google-engineer-offers-top-tips-career-growth-2024-5">senior engineer</a>, I felt ready to be promoted to principal, but I was denied. Luckily, I'd just gotten moved to a team developing Amazon Tickets, a Ticketmaster alternative, and I loved it. The project shifted me out of a promotion mindset. I was so enraptured with the project.But in March 2018, two years into development,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.iq-mag.net/2018/02/amazon-tickets-shuts-shop/"> Amazon Tickets was unexpectedly shuttered</a>. At that point, I was so done. I started feeling disengaged at work and seriously considered quitting. It was the lowest of lows for me.I quickly got reorged to the Prime Video live events team and started reporting to a new manager. I had the opportunity to lead the live services engineering teams on broadcasts for events like Thursday Night Football. I found it hugely exciting. Plus, I hit it off right away with my new manager and we became a powerhouse duo. He even helped me write and submit my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-promoted-at-work-2018-7">promotion document,</a> though I got denied that first time around.<h2 id="60228af3-b7a7-49cb-907f-b10e42639869">In 2019, I cracked the code to my Amazon promotion then I quit</h2>Amazon has an incredibly granular list of criteria that need to be met before you can be considered for promotion, so I worked with my manager to identify the gaps in my performance, and I got feedback that helped me get systematic about my approach moving forward.I created a project for each gap that, if completed, could serve as evidence of my ability. I worked backward to create a strict timeline to finish my projects between July 2019 and November 2019, when the promotion document was due.I was denied again, but my list of missing criteria had shrunk significantly. I created projects for those final skills and submitted another promotion document a few months later and was approved to become a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-alphabet-lessons-learned-engineer-culture-2022-7">principal engineer</a> at a salary of $160,000. But, just as I was promoted, the pandemic shut down all our sports leagues, and for the first time in a while, I had time.I started watching a lot of YouTube videos and decided to use my extra time to throw my hat in the ring and start my own <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube">tech channel</a>.I already owned a lot of photography equipment so it wasn't too much of a stretch for me. By 2024, my salary at Amazon had grown to $270,000, but I was making nearly as much from YouTube. I realized I'd regret not taking a chance on myself and going all in on YouTube. In March of this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rto-amazon-relocate-remote-work2024-8">I officially quit Amazon</a>.<h2 id="69acc2c2-953f-472c-8b4f-55be4726f19e">I'm happy with my decision but I miss writing code</h2>Creating content is incredibly satisfying, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss working on projects that affected hundreds of millions of people. I miss writing code. I miss being a stone's throw away from brilliant people. "This significant uptake of alternative payment solutions can be attributed to the widespread usage of <keyword id="21223853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-wallets" source="keywords">mobile wallets</keyword>, largely driven by UPI, which facilitates mobile payments in real-time simply by scanning <keyword id="19993724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="QR-codes" source="keywords">QR codes</keyword>," GlobalData report elaborated. The report highlights that in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the payment solutions such as mobile and digital wallets have displaced traditional payment methods like cash and bank transfers for e-commerce payments. The report states that such alternative payments are already immensely popular in countries like <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> and India and are also gaining traction in other APAC markets as well. However, China led the way in 2023, with alternative payments accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total e-commerce payments value in 2023 that took place in the entire Asia Pacific region. However, India is also not far behind, with a significant surge in alternative payment methods since 2018. The e-commerce analytics by the company revealed that even traditionally cash-intensive countries in APAC such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, are witnessing a similar trend. "While most Asian markets are traditionally cash-dominated, the adoption of alternative payment methods for both online and in-store payments is growing across many markets in the region, even outpacing the West. This trend is driven by the rising smartphone and internet accessibility, increasing convenience of electronic payments, and the proliferation of mobile and QR code-based payment solutions" said Shiv Gupta, Senior Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData. The report also highlights that within the Asia-Pacific region, China and India have a higher adoption rate of alternative payment methods as compared to their peers. According to the company's 2023 Financial Services Consumer Survey, alternative payment solutions account for more than 65% of the e-commerce transaction value in China, the largest e-commerce market globally. It represents a significant increase from 53.4% in 2018. Other Asian markets like Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines are also seeing higher adoption of alternative payment solutions. "Alternative payment solutions accounts for lion share in e-commerce markets across many APAC countries, supported by rising internet and smartphone penetration, and growing acceptance of digital payments by merchants.
