The <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Department" source="keywords">Income Tax Department</keyword> has achieved a record seizure of Rs 1100 crore in cash and jewellery during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, sources told ANI.<br /><br />As per the sources, by the end of May 30th, the department had seized approximately Rs 1100 crore worth of cash and jewellery, marking a 182 per cent increase compared to the Rs 390 crore seized during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.<br /><br />The <keyword id="20218678" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Model-Code-of-Conduct" source="keywords">Model Code of Conduct</keyword> (MCC) came into force on March 16, the day the <keyword id="19895876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Election Commission of India" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Election Commission of India">Election Commission of India</keyword> announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections. Since then, the Income Tax Department has been vigilant in monitoring and seizing unaccounted cash and valuables that could potentially influence voters.<br /><br />According to sources, Delhi and Karnataka topped the list for the highest seizures, with each state comprising more than Rs 200 crore worth of cash and jewellery.<br /><br />Tamil Nadu followed with the second-highest seizure, amounting to Rs 150 crore. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha collectively comprised more than Rs 100 crore worth of cash and jewellery.<br /><br />The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the commencement of polls for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, and the MCC has been enforced nationwide since March 16. Central agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure adherence to guidelines, focusing on monitoring the movement of cash, liquor, freebies, drugs, jewellery, and other items that could influence voters.<br /><br />Each state has established 24x7 control rooms to check the illegal movement of cash that could be used in elections by politicians.<br /><br />The MCC applies to all political parties and candidates, aiming to prevent unethical practices and promote ethical conduct.<br /><br />Individuals found carrying cash over Rs 50,000 or new items worth over Rs 10,000 without supporting documents will have these items seized. If the individual provides valid documents proving the items are unrelated to the elections, they will be returned. <br />Chief Election Commissioner, Sunil Arora, expressed his appreciation while outlining the importance of social media platforms to follow the code in letter and in spirit starting today.<br /><br />In yesterday’s meeting between the social media platforms in India, IAMAI and the ECI, Ashok Lavasa — one of the election commissioners — said that “voluntary restraint is a hallmark of civilised society and works are effectively as any regulation.”<br /><br />And, it’s not just social media platforms that have to be careful. Lavasa suggested that users should also be subject to a clear voluntary clause agreeing not to misuse online platforms already of the elections or for political purposes.<br /><br />In order to ensure that social media giants like Facebook don’t repeat what happened during the Cambridge Analytica data breach — where the data of 87 million users was harvested and used for political purposes without their consent — the code also has a provision for the ECI to enact a notification mechanism for when there’s a violation Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 on any of the platforms.<br /><br /><br />It basically implies that in the 48 hours leading up to the conclusion of polls in a constituency, any election content shouldn’t circulate on television or similar apparatus — like social networking sites.<br /><br />While the 'Code of Ethics’ is relevant for platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and Google — TikTok has already clarified that it doesn’t any advertisements on its platform in India. And, it’s not like any political party has an account on the app either.<br /><br />The general elections in India are set to kick off on April 11 and will go on till May 19 after which the vote count is scheduled for May 23. Considering that over one-third of India’s 1.3 billion population has access to an internet connection, warding off political bias on online platforms in primarily going to depend on the capability of social media companies to monitor content.<br />

Each WhatsApp Group can potentially have 256 users. Both of these figures are considered to be on the conservative side according to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/87000-groups-on-whatsapp-targeting-voters/articleshow/68544565.cms">analysts</a>, indicating their actual actual may be a lot more.<br /><br />The WhatsApp tipline is a great solution for users who are actually interested in the authenticity of a post that’s shared with them. And the startups are doing their part to stay involved in the process. <br /><br />Indian ride-hailing unicorn Ola Cabs, for whom Bengaluru is home base, has allotted 270 cabs to the Election Commission. These cabs will help Persons with Disabilities commute to the polling booths in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru. Ola has also made it possible for Nodal Officers to check on the status of the scheduled pick-ups of PwD voters through calls to the driver partners. <br /><br />“In the recent past, we have seen that availability of convenient transport options has resulted in positive voter turnout and we will continue to back initiatives that support the constitutional machinery of the country. We are glad to partner with the local authorities and facilitate hassle-free mobility for every voter in Bengaluru,” said Vishnu Bommareddy, Regional Head – South at Ola.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Bengaluru-based Sharechat has weeded out 487,000 posts on its platform which violated community guidelines because of abusive content. Sharechat, which is India's own social media platform had earlier signed the 'Voluntary Code of Ethics’ to make way for fair elections. <br /><br />But as they go out to vote, entrepreneurs have a lot to ask from the government. From access to funding to angel tax issues and better policies, <keyword id="138263" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup">startup</keyword> founders had a list of reasons as they set out to vote. <br /><br />“Startups expect support from an extended eco-system, which includes the government. The biggest hurdle to bring such ideas to the fore is access to capital. In this light, the angel tax should be abandoned with immediate effect. It goes against the ethos of supporting innovation,” said Mayank Bidawatka, co-founder of Vokal, which is an information and knowledge sharing app to bridge the digital knowledge gap among non-English internet users by enabling peer-to-peer knowledge sharing using voice.<br /><br />Another point raised by startups is the possibility of internet monopolies in India and the required action that the government has to take to stop it from happening. “Our government should also have policies around creating a fair playing ground for home grown companies to take on global competitors that have a capital advantage because of existing international operations,” said Bidawatka. <br /><br />When it comes to policies, it's not just about the introduction of new ones but also more work on the current ones. <br /><br />“The most important problem to solve is that startups need a lot more clarity on what are the regulations and compliances in black &amp; white. The ambiguity slows down the innovation more than anything,” said Rajan Bajaj, founder and CEO, Slicepay.<br /><br />With the Twitter hashtag #VoteMaadi, Bengalureans persuaded each other to go out and vote.
