<ul class="summary-list"><li>The German cockroach is one of the most common household pests worldwide.</li><li>New research found that the species evolved to thrive in human dwellings about 2,100 years ago.</li></ul><p>If you ever <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-cockroaches-rats-mice-exterminator-places-avoid-infestation-2019-3">saw a cockroach</a> scuttling across your kitchen floor or a restaurant wall, chances are it was a German cockroach. The German roach is the most common of the 70 different cockroach species in the US.</p><p>For 250 years, scientists didn't know where it came from and how it managed to spread to every continent on Earth except Antarctica. Now that mystery has been solved, and the answer is that it's largely our fault.</p><p>The German cockroach is "a creation of human-made environments," Edward Vargo, an entomology professor at Texas A&amp;M University and co-author of a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2401185121">study</a> identifying the roach's origins, told The Washington Post.</p><p>The German cockroach can't survive in "temperate winters outdoors" and all species of cockroaches "prefer warm, moist places where they can feed on human and pet foods, decaying and fermenting matter, and a variety of other items," according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.</p><p>That's why it's pretty safe to say that if human-built establishments like houses, stores, restaurants, and other buildings didn't exist, neither would these pesky pests. </p><p>The researchers published their results last week in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.</p><h2 id="6fb7a1cb-9f81-4197-9939-0d5b65745e61">Where did the German roach come from?</h2><p>Scientists have long understood that the species thrive indoors, but their origins remained a mystery.</p><p>Through DNA analysis, Vargo and his colleagues found that the species' closest relative is the Asian cockroach. </p><p>The German roach evolved from its Asian cousin about 2,100 years ago to adapt to "human settlements in India or Myanmar," the researchers reported in their paper.</p><p>With advancements in transportation and "temperature-controlled housing," the German <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/home/how-to-get-rid-of-roaches">cockroach</a> made its relatively recent global spread, the researchers said in their report.</p><h2 id="76a46be3-d8a0-4b80-a863-ddb4fc30ecca">How the German cockroach took over</h2><p>The German cockroach's adaption to warm environments, ability to rapidly breed, and unique <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-rid-of-cockroachs-2014-3">resistance to insecticides</a> make them a frustratingly common presence in households.</p><p>For example, in a lifetime, one adult female German roach can produce four to eight egg capsules containing up to 48 eggs each, according to Penn State's Department of Entomology. Do the math and that's between 192 to 384 roaches, if every egg survives to adulthood. </p><p>But German roaches didn't migrate thousands of miles across oceans and continents on their tiny insect legs. Their global spread coincides with advancements in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vintage-travel-photos-from-100-years-ago-1920s">human travel</a> and housing, according to the study.</p><p>In particular, the researchers determined that the German cockroach's spread began along two routes, west and east of its origin in India or Myanmar.</p><p>The roach's westward spread likely occurred during times of increasing "commercial and military activities of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-10-greatest-empires-in-history-2011-9">Islamic Umayyad or Abbasid Caliphates</a>" about 1,200 years ago, the researchers reported. Meanwhile, the pest's eastward spread about 390 years ago was likely caused by "European colonial commercial activities between South and Southeast Asia."</p><p>Understanding the German cockroaches' origins could help other scientists understand how the species evolved to become so resilient against <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cockroaches-becoming-resistant-to-insecticide-harder-to-kill-2019-7">common insecticides</a>. One <a target="_blank" href="https://academic.oup.com/jee/article/115/1/259/6469283?login=false">study</a> found that they're resistant to five types of common household insecticides.</p><p>"If we can know the origin of the species, we can try to identify the mechanism of this rapid evolution of insecticide resistance," Qian Tang, a research associate at Rowland Institute at Harvard who led the new study told the Post.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Lara Logan, a war correspondent turned conspiracy theorist, went on a QAnon-inspired rant on Newsmax.</li><li>She accused world leaders of dining on the blood of children and making people eat insects.</li></ul><p>The right-wing news outlet Newsmax has cut ties with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lara-logan-went-from-war-correspondent-to-fox-nation-2021-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">former war correspondent turned conspiracy theorist</a> Lara Logan after she gave a bizarre QAnon-inspired rant on air, the company said in a statement.</p><p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/oct/21/newsmax-lara-logan-qanon-conspiracy-theory">The Guardian reported</a> that Logan told Newsmax host Eric Bolling that world leaders "dine on the blood of children," referring to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/qanon-conspiracy-theory-anti-semitism-jewish-racist-believe-save-children-2020-10">blood libel conspiracy theory</a> that proliferates in QAnon circles.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/30-of-republicans-have-favorable-view-of-qanon-conspiracy-theory-poll-2021-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">QAnon</a> is a baseless far-right conspiracy theory that claims former President Donald Trump is secretly fighting a "deep state" cabal of satanic pedophiles and cannibals.</p><p>During her on-air rant, <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/media/3698259-newsmax-ends-relationship-with-lara-logan-after-world-leaders-blood-of-children-comment/">The Hill reported</a> that Logan also said: "God believes in sovereignty and national identity and the sanctity of family, and all the things that we've lived with from the beginning of time. And he knows that the open border is Satan's way of taking control of the world through all of these people who are his stooges and his servants.</p><p>"And they may think that they're going to become gods. That's what they tell us. You know, the ones who want us eating insects, cockroaches, and that while they dine on the blood of children? Those are the people, right? They're not going to win."</p><p>Newsmax, in a statement to The Hill on Friday, said it "condemns in the strongest terms the reprehensible statements made by Lara Logan."</p><p>The news outlet said that it has "no plans to interview her again."</p><p>Logan, 51, who was once Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for CBS News, left the network after her 2012 report on the Benghazi attack was retracted after an <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/nov/26/cbs-suspends-lara-logan-benghazi-report">internal review found that key elements of the story were untrue.</a></p><p>Since then, Logan has advanced right-wing conspiracy theories, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fox-nation-lara-logan-anthony-fauci-nazi-doctor-josef-mengele-2021-11">comparing Dr. Anthony Fauci, America's top infectious disease expert, to the notorious Nazi doctor Josef Mengele.</a></p><p>She has also linked Ukrainian <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/russias-invasion-ukraine/fox-nation-host-lara-logan-links-president-zelenskys-entertainment-career">President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to "satanic, occult" practices</a> while praising Russian President Vladimir Putin and baselessly claimed that <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/lara-logan/fox-nation-host-lara-logan-claims-darwinism-plot-rothschilds">Charles Darwin was employed by the Jewish Rothschild banking family to create his theory of evolution.</a></p>

It's no wonder the phrase "cat nap" is so ubiquitous. </p><p>Here are five reasons why cats sleep so much.</p><h2>1. They're crepuscular</h2><p><a href="https://www.animalhumanesociety.org/behavior/cat-keeping-you-awake-how-manage-night-activity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cats are crepuscular,</a> which means they are most active during low light times of day, including dawn and dusk, says <a href="http://www.csuvth.colostate.edu/DirectorySearch/Search/MemberProfile/vth/41390/Meindl/Alison" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alison Meindl, DVM, DABVP</a>, veterinarian and assistant professor at the <a href="https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/vth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital</a>. </p><p>Since humans sleep at night and are awake during the day, it might seem like cats are always asleep. But the reality is that you may just be sleeping for most of the time when your cat is active, says Meindl. </p><h2>2. They're carnivores</h2><p>Simply put, sleeping so much is in cats' nature. Both domestic and wild cats are carnivores (meat eaters), and in general, carnivores sleep more than herbivores (plant eaters), says <a href="https://www.amcny.org/find_doctor/ann-hohenhaus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ann Hohenhaus, DVM, DACVIM</a>, Senior Veterinarian at <a href="https://www.amcny.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center</a>. </p><p>This is because carnivores hunt for their food and hunting takes more energy than grazing, says Hohenhaus. Wild cats sleep both to recover from hunting and conserve energy for the next hunt. </p><p>According to Hohenhaus: "These behaviors are still programmed in our <keyword id="12291550" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pet" source="Orion">pet</keyword> cats even though we serve up their dinner and they only hunt the occasional cockroach or mouse."</p><h2>3. They're older</h2><p>Cats tend to sleep more as they age, says Hohenhaus. A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7557453/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 study</a> found that the older cats get, the more they sleep. </p><p>From the age 11 onwards, data suggests that the time spent sleeping increases each year.  In general, they will typically become <a href="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/loving-care-older-cats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">less active</a> and may have trouble getting around as easily as they used to, as well.  </p><h2>4. They're sick or in pain</h2><p>While it's more likely that your cat sleeps so much due to one of the above reasons, it is possible that your cat may be sick or in pain. Additionally, Hohenhaus says you might think your cat is sleeping while they actually are just hiding and not moving around. </p><p>Excessive sleep on its own isn't a red flag, but Hohenhaus says you should look out for signs such as:</p><ul><li>Hiding</li><li>Weight loss</li><li>Vomiting</li><li>Not moving, jumping, or running as much as before</li></ul><p>Some <a href="https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/cat-care/common-cat-diseases" target="_blank" rel="noopener">common illnesses</a> that can result in similar symptoms in your cat include diabetes, heartworm,  endocrine diseases, pain due to arthritis, and more. </p><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Bottom line, cats' excessive sleep time comes down to evolution. It's in their nature to sleep so much, and most of the time, it isn't something you need to worry about. Let them rest, and they'll be sure to let you know when they're awake and ready to play. </p><p>However, if you notice major changes to the amount of time your cat sleeps, or if you notice anything else off with them, you may want to contact your vet to make sure your fur baby is healthy.</p>

Does that mean the idea of an exoskeleton is restricted to futuristic plots? Not really. Sci-fi has often been influenced by real, present day examples. The exoskeleton is no different.<br />
Like most concepts, the basic idea stems from nature. Crabs, lobsters, grasshoppers and even common cockroaches have outer skeletons, which is what exoskeleton means, to protect them from the environment and predators. However, a human stepping inside an exoskeleton is more like a turtle or tortoise, creatures that have both inner and outer skeletons. Yes, that's twice the protection.<br />
In both real life and sci-fi, there is a sense of perfect synergy when 'man meets machine'. This is the most simplistic idea behind the rise and popularity of exoskeletons. If a machine can imitate the movement of a man, then it's the perfect tool for almost any type of physical activity. The potential for a combination of human manoeuvrability and machine power is almost limitless.<br />
Scientists and engineers at Perceptual Robotics Lab in Pisa, Italy have developed what they call a "Body Extender" - a set of exoskeleton arms that a man can wear. Each arm can carry a load of 50 kilos and can exert 10 times the pressure the wearer applies on objects. The machine can track the movements of the human body and with that information it uses an array of 22 degrees of freedom, each of which is actuated with an electric motor, to perform a single task. The fact that it is made up of modular components also makes it future proof as it can be used for a wide range of tasks in different environments.<br />
The 'Powerloader' is one of the world's most affordable (at around $5000) and mass produced exoskeletons currently in production. The company building it, Activelink, a subsidiary of Panasonic, is planning to roll out the first 1000 units by 2015. These machines can pick up loads of 100 kilos and move at speeds of upt0 8 kph. Both the 'Body Extender' and 'Powerloader' have extensive uses in physically demanding tasks such as rescue operations during earthquakes, lifting heavy loads during constructions, etc.<br />
There are other practical uses for exoskeletons as well. US company Raytheon develops the XOS 2 for combat personnel. 'Hulc', developed by Lockheed Martin also has similar uses, where the exoskeleton suits help soldiers carry loads of up to 90 kilos without compromising their movement speed.<br />
Perhaps the most progressive use for such suits lies in the field of healthcare. 'Lokomat', developed by Swiss company Hocoma, is basically a pair of robotic trousers that patients recovering from strokes can use to improve their walking. 'ReWalk', produced by Argo Medical Technologies, helps people with lower limb disabilities to walk with crutches.<br />
Once these machines have better power components, so that everyday users aren't restricted by chord lengths, these exoskeleton devices can actually have a proper future where they are extensively developed and sold. For this to happen, the evolution of batteries needs to speed up by quite a few notches. Still, these suits will be part of daily human life in the future; the only question is - how long will it take?<br />
