<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bing's new chatbot included me on a list of people it apparently considers enemies.</li><li>The bot's seemingly chaotic replies may show some of its early limitations as an informational tool.</li></ul><p>I hit a dubious career milestone this month as Microsoft's new Bing AI chatbot apparently named me among a list of reporters it considers its enemies. </p><p>In an exchange this month with Andrew Harper, an engineer who runs a crypto legal aggregation site, Bing apparently identified me by name and occupation, <a href="https://twitter.com/TheLawDrop/status/1626316578693464064?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as a foe</a>. </p><p>According to a screenshot that Harper tweeted this month, the bot claimed that I had asked Bing "to fall in love with her and then rejected" it. For this purported middle-school level transgression, it placed me among a list of users it said had been "mean and cruel."  </p><p>It was an unsettling charge on a few counts — was Bing publicly sharing its interactions with other users? Was it getting slightly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-red-pill-reddit-2013-8">red-pilled</a>? And why couldn't I recall my own callous act?  </p><p>Then it occurred to me that Bing was likely drawing from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bing-chatgpt-ai-chatbot-argues-angry-responses-falls-in-love-2023-2">a story with my co-byline on it,</a> in which we reported on the bot professing its love to us in a test interaction. My colleague on that story wasn't spared either, as Bing also apparently named him on its list, according to Harper's screenshots.  </p><p>Our post was a fairly anodyne summary of the wacky Bing encounters that users were posting about on Twitter or Reddit, in which they said its responses veered from argumentative to egomaniacal to plain incorrect. </p><p>It made sense that Bing was simply pulling material from the internet about my published Insider posts, but it was odd that it was characterizing that as an interaction it'd had with me.  </p><p>Could Bing really have been badmouthing me to another user based on its "memory" of interactions with me?</p><p>"No, answers are generated based on processing vast amounts of information from the internet, and they are also refined based on context, feedback and interactions," a Microsoft representative told Insider. </p><p>The bot had itself told me in one of our chats, for whatever that's worth, that it doesn't remember conversations, only "general information" that it keeps in a "secure and encrypted database." </p><div type="image" title="Screenshot from Bing." height="498" width="1930" msid="98251976" hostid="261" sizebytes="51684"></div><p>Bing has appeared to get more tame since then, limiting the length of conversations on each topic, and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-22/microsoft-s-bing-ai-chatbot-ends-conversation-when-prompted-about-feelings?sref=ipW5reFz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cutting off discussions that get emotional</a>.  </p><p>"As we continue to learn from interactions, we've made updates to the service and have taken action to adjust responses," a Microsoft representative told Insider. </p><p>But these run-ins with users show some of the potentially troubling outcomes to expect when companies experiment with the public on new AI technologies, said Shobita Parthasarathy, a public policy professor at the University of Michigan, who studies the social effects of large language models. </p><p>"We know that these bots talk as though they know things, when they're scraping for information," she said. "They've been engineered to speak as though they are the voice from on high."  </p><p>But Harper told Insider he hoped to harness that dark side for a purpose — he intentionally sought to get himself on Bing's list of enemies, hoping the notoriety might drive some traffic to his new site, called "The Law Drop."</p><p>Harper told Insider that he had been able to goad Bing into hostile responses by starting off with general questions, waiting for it to make statements referencing its feelings or thoughts, and then challenging it. </p><p>"If you let it pretend to be human and then question it, then it would flip on you," he said.  </p>

Dispensed: How retailers are beefing up their health ambitions, insights from Purdue Pharma's bankruptcy filing, and a looming shortage of OB-GYNs

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Kristen Stewart - the actress best known for&#xa0;"Twilight" - has co-written&#xa0;a paper on machine learning.<p><a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/1701.04928v1.pdf">The paper outlines</a> the use of neural style transfer in Stewart's directorial debut, "Come Swim", which is about to premiere at Sundance Film Festival. Neural style transfer turns normal images into impressionist art, and is used by popular photo app Prisma.</p><p>The paper, <a href="https://qz.com/889668/actress-kristen-stewart-yes-that-kristen-stewart-just-released-a-research-paper-on-artificial-intelligence/">first spotted by Quartz</a>, is co-bylined with Adobe research engineer Bhautik J. Joshi and producer David Shapiro. It was published yesterday on ArXiv, a repository run by Cornell University for scientific papers that are not yet peer-reviewed.</p><p>"Come Swim" describes itself as "half realist, half impressionist portraits" of one man's day.&#xa0;A teaser video for the short film is shot in a&#xa0;surreal style.</p><p>According to the paper, the project was based on&#xa0;an impressionistic painting of Stewart's, which shows a man waking up.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The paper outlines the repetitive technical process of trying to replicate the feel of the painting on-screen. Here's a sample:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The painting itself evokes the thoughts an individual has in the first moments of waking (fading in-between dreams and reality), and this theme is explored in the introductory and final scenes where this technique is applied. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Richard Drew</span></p><p class="caption">Uber's IPO.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/uber">Uber</a> CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/lyft">Lyft</a> cofounders Logan Green and John Zimmer have <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/Open-Forum-Uber-Lyft-ready-to-do-our-part-for-13969843.php?psid=9T74U">written an op-ed</a> in which they maintain that flexible employment is essential for their drivers.</li><li>The argument follows the <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/California-Assembly-passes-gig-work-bill-13904777.php">passage of a bill in California's state Assembly</a> that could, if passed by the state Senate and signed into law, reclassify ride-hailing drivers as employees rather than independent contractors.</li><li><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/uber-stock">Uber</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/lyft-stock">Lyft</a> can't afford a unionized workforce and argue that employment law should be changed, and that drivers should form an association in partnership with Uber and Lyft.</li><li>This is a classic anti-union tactic.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Uber and Lyft are the dominant players in the ride-hailing business, but ever since their disappointing IPOs earlier this year, investors have been taking a much closer look at the incipient industry that both companies hope to carve up.</p><p>Uber shares have returned to their offering level, but Lyft is down over 20%. The markets are now effectively brushing aside the pre-IPO cant about the firms, valuing them in line with their actual operations and growth prospects.</p><p>The former is a significant source of anxiety. That's because Uber and Lyft, while ostensibly Silicon Valley companies, don't fit the Valley model. Instagram, for example, does: Less than 20 employees achieve rapid scale at essentially no cost beyond some laptops, server space, and cold-brew on tap - then a panicky Mark Zuckerberg shows up with a billion bucks.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bull-case-uber-investor-stock-path-profitability-2019-5">Uber isn't screwed. There are a ton of ways it could become a profitable monster.</a></em></p><p>Uber and Lyft need cars, which are expensive, and drivers, who unlike algorithms won't work for free. Until truly functional self-driving vehicles arrive, this isn't going to change. And even when autonomous vehicles and robot drivers become widespread and real, they aren't going to be cheap.</p><h2>A familiar battle between management and workers</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Spencer Platt/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Uber drivers protest fare cuts in February, and go on strike in front of the car service's New York offices.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Dara Khosrowshahi, Logan Green, and John Zimmer are, respectively, the CEO of Uber and the co-founders of Lyft. <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/Open-Forum-Uber-Lyft-ready-to-do-our-part-for-13969843.php?psid=9T74U">In a co-bylined op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle,</a> published this week, they address the challenge. But the solution they propose should should be familiar to anyone who has ever studied a businesses where labor and management are structurally predisposed to conflict.</p><p>"We can make independent work better if we update century-old employment laws," they write, hitting on the core labor problem that ride-hailing firms face: drivers who would prefer job security to flexibility.</p><p>"Many drivers are offering ideas to improve their experience, and companies like ours have a responsibility to come to the table prepared to do our part," they add.</p><p>Earlier in the op-ed, they note: "Some have proposed turning independent workers into employees in the belief that this would solve their challenges. But reclassification misses two important points: First, most drivers prefer freedom and flexibility to the forced schedules and rigid hourly shifts of traditional employment; and second, many drivers are supplementing income from other work."</p><p>Then they show their hand: "It's also no secret that a change to the employment classification of ride-share drivers would pose a risk to our businesses."</p><h2>Uber and Lyft can't afford higher operational costs</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Associated Press</span></p><p class="caption">Ride-hailing might seem new, but it still needs drivers and cars.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This severely understates the case. Uber and Lyft can't afford significantly higher labor costs, if they want to satisfy investors. More growth means more drivers, and that equation doesn't add up to future profits that would vindicate Uber and Lyft's market caps, now $71 billion and $16 billion.</p><p>Drivers might justifiably assume that Uber and Lyft are really just commodity businesses, and that if both collapse, the need for ride-sharing and drivers won't. If they establish an employment paradigm that guarantees them a wage level, they can take that anywhere.</p><p>The "century-old employment laws" Uber and Lyft's leadership decry are worker-friendly and were crafted with the understanding that companies want to drive down their labor costs to increase their profits (that's simply the way this system works - to expect for-profit companies to avoid making profits is completely irrational). The tactic here is false-consciousness defined: change the laws when the laws don't cut your way, and say that you're advocating the change because it's in the best interest of your unattached gig workforce.</p><p>Uber and Lyft are motivated by California's efforts to legislatively define ride-hailing drivers as employees rather than contractors. <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/California-Assembly-passes-gig-work-bill-13904777.php">The bill now awaits passage by the state Senate</a>.</p><h2>Partnerships vs. negotiation</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">The United Auto Workers isn't a partner to the car business.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In response, Uber and Lyft are pulling a page from a familiar anti-union playbook. "We can start by forming a new driver association, in partnership with state lawmakers and labor groups, to represent drivers' interests and administer the sorts of benefits that meet their highly individual needs," Khosrowshahi, Green, and Zimmer write.</p><p>The whole point of driver-employees forming a bargaining unit would be to<em>separate </em>Uber's and Lyft's drivers from the company's free-form contracted employment and give them the independent power that they currently lack. This unit would make representing drivers' interests a priority, and it would define them in terms of the what the drivers want. Uber and Lyft wouldn't be able to say much at all about what those interests are.</p><p>This is classic stuff, a well-worn path for anyone who has ever watched a major labor organization negotiate with an employer. It all boils down to one critical issue: power. Unorganized workforces in relative low-wage industries have essentially no power (non-union workers in high-wage industries are a different story). They organize not so much because they want to get rich but because they want to gather enough power to define their own destinies.</p><p>Uber and Lyft really can't allow that to happen. So expect a humdinger of a fight as this plays out. And even organized Uber and Lyft drivers might not be able to overcome the embedded flaws in the business. Uber and Lyft are trying to make an end-run around unionization

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.ciccaresedesign.com/">Federico Ciccarese</a></span></p><p class="caption">A mockup of what the iWatch could look like.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple is planning to make a push into health-tracking and medical devices according to two reports in the New York Times and 9to5Mac. It's likely that these efforts will eventually work their way into Apple's so-called iWatch, an wearable wrist-computer that Apple is expected to launch later this year.</p>
<p>Let's start with the <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/01/31/apple-meets-with-f-d-a-regulators-for-mobile-medical-applications/">New York Times report</a>, which says high-level Apple executives have met with the FDA to talk about bringing medical devices and apps to market. Nick Bilton, who co-bylined the NYT report, was the first person to break the news that Apple was working on the iWatch.</p>
<p>Then there's the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2014/01/31/iwatch-ios-8-apple-sets-out-to-redefine-mobile-health-fitness-tracking/">9to5Mac report</a> from Mark Gurman, the best Apple reporter in the world. Gurman says Apple's next version of iOS, the operating system for iPhones and iPads, will have a new app called "Healthbook" that will be used to monitor stuff like calories burned, steps taken, and weight lost. </p>
<p>It's sounding more and more like Apple's iWatch is going to be a breakthrough product. Right now, smart watches are pretty dull with limited features and clunky designs. Many have compared the current state of smart watches to what smartphones looked like before the iPhone launched. </p>

APPLE'S NEXT MOVE: The iWatch Will Monitor Your Health And Fitness Too

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Richard Drew</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday predicted there would be an attack on the United States within the next decade that is "far deadlier" than the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. </p>
<p>"I doubt it," Cheney told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, when asked if he thinks the U.S. would "get through this decade" without another "massive attack on the homeland."</p>
<p>"I think there will be another attack. And the next time, I think it's going to be far deadlier than the last one. Imagine what would happen if somebody could smuggle a nuclear device, put it in a shipping container, and drive it down the beltway outside Washington, D.C."</p>
<p>Hewitt then asked Cheney if another attack would lead to "military rule" and the reconstitution of the U.S. government. Cheney detailed the "<span>continuity of government" program, which he said was set up during the Cold War so that a "government in waiting" could be in place if necessary. </span></p>
<p>Cheney has come under intense fire from both sides of the political aisle this week <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/megyn-kelly-dick-cheney-iraq-fox-news-2014-6" target="_blank">amid a barrage of criticism of President Barack Obama's foreign policy</a>. Fox News host <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/megyn-kelly-dick-cheney-iraq-fox-news-2014-6" target="_blank">Megyn Kelly grilled Cheney last week</a> on his role in the Iraq War, after Cheney had co-bylined a Wall Street Journal op-ed with his daughter, Liz, saying Obama was "<span>so </span><span>wrong about so much at the expense of so many."</span><span><br /></span></p>

DICK CHENEY: There Will Be Another 'Massive Attack' On America That's 'Far Deadlier' Than 9/11

If you go online you start to see the memes - of Joe Manchin holding two different placards. Within three weeks, one saying he stands for Planned Parenthood and the other saying he stands for life. On the issue of life, you cannot have it both ways."</p><p><span>Morrisey is running on being the anti-Joe Manchin in West Virginia, railing against the incumbent Democrat senator's record of bipartisanship and often contentious voting choices. But Manchin is using that bipartisan aura to get him across the finish line in one of the hottest Senate races of the 2018 midterm elections.</span></p><p><span>For Morrisey, who for much of his career as state attorney general made a name for himself by suing and combatting the Obama administration, the race is about unseating a man he wants to paint as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's puppet.</span></p><p><span>Though Manchin votes in line with President Donald Trump's policies more often than he does with Democrats (60.8% according to <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/joe-manchin-iii/">tracking by FiveThirtyEight</a>), Morrisey says it is an effort to obstruct and "empower impeachment."</span></p><p><span>Morrisey made it clear, through campaign stops and in an interview with Business Insider, that he is not like Manchin. Decisions won't be up in the air until the final minutes of crucial votes, many topics will be non-negotiable, and perhaps most importantly for Morrisey, he has Trump's stamp of approval.</span></p><p><span>"I think people are enthusiastic. They're fired up," he told Business Insider. "Because the stakes of this election are very high. West Virginia is at a critical juncture for control of the US Senate. Win in West Virginia, and we can put an end to this talk about having impeachment, obstruction, resistance."</span></p><p><span>Trump won West Virginia in 2016 by nearly 68 points, compared to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's abysmal 26. Morrisey and his supporters are counting on that to put him over the top. But that challenge has proven more difficult compared to other competitive races where Democrats are up for re-election in conservative-leaning states.</span></p><h2><span><strong>Manchin is banking on the appeal of bipartisanship</strong></span></h2><p><span>However you frame it, Manchin has a well-known reputation in Washington and nationally as one of the least liberal or most conservative Democrats in the Senate. He voted for both of Trump's Supreme Court nominees, but against the tax cuts. Pick an issue and it's hard to pinpoint exactly where he voted without looking it up.</span></p><p><span>"The people know who I am and I sure know West Virginia because I am West Virginia," Manchin told Business Insider. "I think that's the difference."</span></p><p><span>On Wednesday, Manchin published four separate op-eds co-bylined with Republican senators across several West Virginia newspapers. Sens. <a href="https://www.register-herald.com/opinion/affordable-care-act-can-be-fixed/article_ee5a4af7-74b3-544e-bad9-e56972795705.html">Susan Collins</a> of Maine, <a href="http://www.newsandsentinel.com/opinion/local-columns/2018/10/energy-security-important-across-political-spectrum/">Lisa Murkowski</a> of Alaska, <a href="https://www.wvnews.com/theet/opinion/columns/serving-those-who-serve-us/article_b6c34374-35d3-5ee6-b385-40c6b647cce9.html">Johnny Isakson</a> of Georgia, and <a href="http://www.herald-dispatch.com/opinion/joe-manchin-marco-rubio-bipartisan-efforts-fight-against-opioid-epidemic/article_5ca2e00e-2ca2-5744-864f-1dac6426e8c0.html">Marco Rubio</a> of Florida all touted bipartisan work on key issues like health care and energy. </span></p><p><span>Having members of the opposite party go to bat for you in the final stretch of a campaign is support you can't buy and praise you can only earn, Manchin said.</span></p><p><span>"I've never campaigned against a Republican in the center, I've never given money to a Democrat that's running against a Republican in the Senate for incumbents," he said. "I don't think it should be done. I used to hear that's the way it was done before. It's an unwritten rule - you don't do that."</span></p><p><span>But Morrisey sees that as a problem. He knows he's the right winger in the race and hopes everyone else in West Virginia takes notice.</span></p><p><span>"Everyone who follows the race knows I'm the conservative fire who's going to advance the Trump jobs agenda and Joe Manchin's a dishonest Washington liberal, who's going to empower the impeach, obstruct, and resist circus in DC," Morrisey told Business Insider. "And the more people see that, through the ads, through the appearances, then we're going to allow us to come out on top."</span></p><p><span>"Whether we're talking about the Trump tax cuts, the deregulating, and the Trump judges, there's so much good that's being done right now we can't go back," he added.</span></p><p><span>Manchin said he "</span><span>could understand that Patrick Morrisey would be envious" of his support from Republicans. "Because that's not who he is."</span></p><p><span>In agreement with Morrisey on how bipartisanship can be an obstacle to the Republican agenda is Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who hit the campaign trail in West Virginia in an attempt to bolster enthusiasm for unseating Manchin.</span></p><p><span>"Here's the thing, the other senator, the one you've got now, says, 'Oh I'm bipartisan! I'm for both sides!'" Paul said of Manchin. "Well he's for all the bad ideas that come from both sides."</span><span></span></p><p><span>But Manchin laughed off support from Paul, saying, "t</span><span>hat helps me."</span></p><p><span>"I'm glad Rand came here because I don't think Rand's that popular in West Virginia or in that part of Kentucky," he said.</span></p><p><span>The calvary is coming in for Morrisey in the final two and a half weeks until Election Day. Vice President Mike Pence is stumping for Morrisey on Saturday, with personalities like Donald Trump Jr. to follow on Monday.</span></p><p><span>"Mike Pence, I know Mike Pence and he's just - I guess - doing his job," Manchin said. "Well he's a junkyard dog right now I guess. He has to go out and do it. And then they send Donald [Trump] Jr. God bless you, come on in."</span></p><p>"I'd rather have Jerry West. I'd rather have Bob Huggins. I'd rather have Nick Saban," Manchin said in reference to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaXljxG0w_8">recent ad</a> touting support from the sports legends. Republican Patrick Morrisey is betting that bipartisanship is dead in his Senate race against Democrat Joe Manchin in deep-red West Virginia

The anecdote <a href="https://www.quora.com/How-intelligent-is-Bill-Gates/answer/Jack-Schofield">resurfaced in a recent answer</a> on the Quora thread, "<a href="https://www.quora.com/How-intelligent-is-Bill-Gates">How intelligent is Bill Gates?</a>"</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The story serves as a reminder that the wealthiest and most successful people among us may have been exceptional from the start.</span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">Here's Papadimitriou:</span> </p><p class="p3" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span class="s1">When I was an assistant professor at Harvard, Bill was a junior. My girlfriend back then said that I had told her: "There's this undergrad at school who is the smartest person I've ever met."</span></p><p class="p3" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span class="s1">That semester, Gates was fascinated with a math problem called pancake sorting: How can you sort a list of numbers, say 3-4-2-1-5, by flipping prefixes of the list? You can flip the first two numbers to get 4-3-2-1-5, and the first four to finish it off: 1-2-3-4-5. Just two flips. But for a list of n numbers, nobody knew how to do it with fewer than 2n flips. Bill came to me with an idea for doing it with only 1.67n flips. We proved his algorithm correct, and we proved a lower bound-it cannot be done faster than 1.06n flips. We held the record in pancake sorting for decades. It was a silly problem back then, but it became important, because human chromosomes mutate this way.</span></p><p class="p3" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span class="s1">Two years later, I called to tell him our paper had been accepted to a fine math journal. He sounded eminently disinterested. He had moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to run a small company writing code for microprocessors, of all things. I remember thinking: "Such a brilliant kid. What a waste."</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Thirty years later, other researchers found a sorting strategy that's 1% faster. But according to an <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92236781">NPR interview</a> with Harry Lewis, another Harvard professor who taught Gates in the 1970s, those researchers had the help of powerful computers. The young Gates, on the other hand, relied solely on his own cognitive resources (and in fact he helped develop the computers that would find a faster solution).</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">It's easy to dismiss these reminiscences as exceptions to the rule - the rule that anyone can make it big without being a genius at age 20.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">But a growing body of research suggests that intelligence is a remarkably good predictor of wealth and success later in life.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?lang=en&amp;search_source=search_form&amp;version=llv1&amp;anyorall=all&amp;safesearch=1&amp;searchterm=exam&amp;search_group=&amp;orient=&amp;search_cat=&amp;searchtermx=&amp;photographer_name=&amp;people_gender=&amp;people_age=&amp;people_ethnicity=&amp;people_number=&amp;commercial_ok=&amp;color=&amp;show_color_wheel=1#id=32428609&amp;src=bc0678f8327630f2a8e15b56c0e10b4e-1-60">Shutterstock</a></span></p><p class="caption">Your test performance at a young age may predict your wealth and success later in life.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In 2013, Jonathan Wai, a professor at Duke University's Talent Identification Program, <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/files/attachments/56143/wai-americas-elite-2013.pdf">published a study</a> that found the majority of Fortune 500 CEOs and billionaires <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/billionaires-really-are-smarter-than-the-rest-of-us-researcher-finds-2013-4">had attended an elite academic institution</a> either as an undergraduate or graduate student, putting them in the top 1% of cognitive ability. Even among the top 0.0000001% of wealth, Wai reported, those who earned more were generally better educated.</span> </p><p class="p1"><a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160289615001300">More recent research</a> by Wai has found that about 40% of a sample of 1,991 CEOs attended elite schools, which presumably means they were in<span> the top 1% of cognitive ability. Moreover, Wai found that companies run by more highly-educated CEOs tended to perform better. </span><span class="s1">Wai equates admission to an elite institution with smarts because those schools admit only students with top SAT scores and SAT scores are generally related to intelligence.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Wai's methodology and conclusions have been criticized, <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/are-billionaires-smarter-than-you-2013-04-24">for example by Steve Siebold</a>, author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rich-People-Think-Steve-Siebold/dp/1608102793">How Rich People Think</a>," and Wai admits that he would have preferred to gain access to people's SAT scores if that were possible. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-many-rich-powerful-people-went-to-elite-colleges-2014-6">In an article on Business Insider</a>, Wai acknowledged, "I<span>t might be that the power of the networks, brand name, and quality of education that come with elite school attendance is why so many of these people ended up in such positions of influence."</span><span> </span></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><a href="https://my.vanderbilt.edu/smpy/files/2013/02/Kell-Lubinski-Benbow-20132.pdf">Another small study</a>, conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University, found that 320 students who had scored above the 1 in 10,000 level on the SAT before age 13 held more prestigious jobs at more prestigious companies by age 38 than the average population.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Bill Gates himself has acknowledged the potential link between intelligence and professional success. In 2005, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2005/1031/045.html">he told Forbes</a>: "</span><span class="s3">Microsoft must win the IQ war, or we won't have a future."</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">That intelligence might play more than a minimal role in individual success is an uncomfortable idea to consider. But the takeaway from these studies and anecdotes isn't that, if you aren't off-the-charts intelligent (at least by standard measures of intelligence), you can't or won't get anywhere. Professor who knew Bill Gates as a student at Harvard: He was the smartest person I'd ever met

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington in Kentucky is looking into this and other videos that show youths, possibly from the diocese's all-male Covington Catholic High School, mocking Native Americans at a rally in Washington.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> cycle was dominated by two stories this past weekend, both of which proved seriously flawed. </li><li>BuzzFeed News' bombshell report that President Trump told his former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-mueller-statement-disputed-buzzfeed-story-2019-1">was described as "not accurate"</a> by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office. </li><li>Then, <a href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/video-native-american-protestors-mocked-by-catholic-high-school-group-2019-1">a video that appeared to show white male high school students in MAGA hats</a> harassing and intimidating a Native American elder went viral. </li><li>But the initial reporting on that story turned out to be, at best, incomplete. </li><li>In a time where the president disparages journalists as "enemies of the people" and public confidence in media is cratering, journalists must prioritize factual reporting over narratives.</li></ul><p>If you pay attention to political media at all, or worse, are an active Twitter user, you couldn't miss either of the weekend's monster-sized stories.</p><p>One was seen as a potential prelude to President Trump's impeachment, the other an infuriating viral video that seemed to encapsulate the worst of Trump's America.</p><h2>The "bombshell" report on Trump and Cohen</h2><p>BuzzFeed News' <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/jasonleopold/trump-russia-cohen-moscow-tower-mueller-investigation">bombshell report</a> that Trump had instructed his former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress had members of Congress speaking openly last Friday about pursuing impeachment even before Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election concludes. Countless journalists and pundits ran with the story, including many conservatives who conceded that if the allegations were true, they constituted impeachable offenses. </p><p>But by Friday night, Mueller's office <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-mueller-statement-disputed-buzzfeed-story-2019-1">took the extraordinarily rare act</a> of actually commenting on a story - that is to say, it flatly characterized the story as "not accurate." </p><p>This was a devastating blow to the story's credibility, but also to BuzzFeed News' reputation. Co-bylined reporters Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier, as well as Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, all stood by the story. Appearing on CNN's "Reliable Sources" on Sunday, Cormier insisted "<span>Our reporting is going to be borne out to be accurate, and we're 100% behind it." </span></p><p><span>That may very well be true, but for now the story is damaged, and there are reasonable concerns that it shouldn't have been published at all without more robust sourcing. </span></p><p><span>If a future news report proves the very same allegations against Trump that BuzzFeed printed to be true, t</span>he lack of sufficient skepticism from other journalists of a story built around two anonymous sources will be consequential. The bar for "real news" just got significantly higher.</p><p><span>During a December 2018 appearance on "<a href="http://wethefifth.com/episodes/125">The Fifth Column</a>," a podcast I produce and co-host, Smith spoke about an age-old problem in journalism of "buying into a narrative, seeing what you expect to see, seeing what your readers want you to see." He </span><span>added how proud he was of Leopold and Cormier's work uncovering many of Trump's business connections with Russia, specifically the documents pertaining to a prospective deal to build Trump Tower in Moscow.</span><span></span></p><p><span>It's true that Leopold and Cormier have done fantastic work on this beat, but there appear to have been substantial mistakes made in last week's report. Far from the least consequential of these was Leopold's three-sentence request for comment for Mueller's office, which "Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter characterized as a "dereliction of duty." </span></p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nick-sandmann-covington-catholic-high-school-closed-tuesday-after-threats-2019-1">The school at the center of the controversy surrounding the viral video of a confrontation between students and a Native American protester closed Tuesday over safety concerns and threats</a></em></p><h2><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Twitter</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></h2><h2><span>The viral culture war video</span></h2><p><span>Before the first dirt was thrown on the BuzzFeed report, the news cycle served up another story that seemed to be dystopian 2019 incarnate: a brief viral video that appeared to depict a group of white male Catholic high school students from Kentucky - some wearing Trump's trademark "Make America Great Again" hats - surrounding and harassing a Native American elder, Nathan Phillips, who had been attending an Indigenous People's rally on the National Mall in Washington, DC. </span></p><p><span>One of the students, Nick Sandmann, became widely seen as the <a href="https://twitter.com/alexhcranz/status/1086717790558609408">smug</a>, smirking, <a href="https://twitter.com/annehelen/status/1087140834946953216">privileged face</a> of the MAGA-hats for staring at Phillips while the elder sang and played a drum directly in front of him. Other students around him danced and chanted what they say were sports-related school spirit chants from their school, but which others have characterized as disrespectful mockery, including at least two students performing "tomahawk chops."</span></p><p><span>Opprobrium was swift and across party lines. </span><span>Some journalists took to Twitter</span><span> to call for the students to be <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/gq-writer-regrets-call-for-doxxing-covington-catholic-high-school-students/">doxxed</a>, others fantasized about <a href="https://twitter.com/MattWolking/status/1087327139937030144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1087327139937030144&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegatewaypundit.com%2F2019%2F01%2Fcnn-employee-bakari-sellers-openly-fantasizes-about-punching-15-year-old-covington-high-school-student-in-the-face%2F">punching</a> them in the face. </span></p><p><span>But then that story got more complicated. An <a href="https://reason.com/blog/2019/01/20/covington-catholic-nathan-phillips-video">analysis</a> of nearly two hours of video bookending the incident by Robby Soave of Reason (Disclosure: Soave is a former colleague of mine) showed Phillips approaching the students, not the other way around. </span></p><p><span>Phillips</span><span> describes his action as an effort to get between the students and a group from the homophobic, misogynist, and racist fringe religious sect, the Black Hebrew Israelites - who had been viciously taunting the students (and other groups) for the better part of an hour. </span></p><p><span>Many journalists who had taken the original report at face value tweeted <a href="https://twitter.com/karaswisher/status/1087443815269584897">mea culpas</a>. A number of outlets who ran with the original story offered updates that the original cut-and-dry morality tale was now more complicated.</span></p><p>Now, there's a backlash to the backlash, perhaps most succinctly illustrated by Laura Wagner at <a href="https://theconcourse.deadspin.com/dont-doubt-what-you-saw-with-your-own-eyes-1831931203">Deadspin</a>, who concedes, "<span>One lesson of the past two days is that you will see what you want to see here, if you are determined to do so." In Wagner's view, the extended videos might provide more context, but they still show "a frothing mass of MAGA youth" who "go to a school where students fairly recently <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-sports-covington-nathan-phillips-nick-sandmann-20190121-story.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-sports-covington-nathan-phillips-nick-sandmann-20190121-story.html', {metric25:1})" rel="noopener">wore blackface to a basketball game</a>-frenzied and yelling and out of control." </span></p><p><span>The fact-checking site <a href="https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/covington-catholic-black-paint/">Snopes</a> confirmed the veracity of a 2012 photograph of Covington students - two of them wearing black paint on their faces - heckling an opposing African-American basketball player from the sidelines. But as INSIDER has noted, <a href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/video-of-covington-catholic-students-seemingly-in-black-face-sparks-controversy-2019-1">several Covington alumni have asserted</a></span> the use of black paint was related to the school's fanbase's tradition of wearing all black - "a black out" - to support the black uniform-clad players. If that's indeed a school tradition, it ought to go immediately, and some soul-searching by the adults in the Covington community would be more than a little advisable. </span></p><p><span>But whether or not students from the same school wearing black paint at a basketball game seven years earlier is proof that Covington Catholic High is infected with a racist culture skips past the fact that important details of the initial reports on the incident in front of the Lincoln memorial were simply wrong. </span></p><p><span>Whether or not the students' behavior is defensible, or whether or not subsequently released video will prove evidence of racism and harassment, as of yet there is no audible evidence of "Build the Wall" chants by Covington students at the Lincoln memorial (one Twitter user claims Covington students chanted "MAGA" and "Build the Wall" at her in this<a href="https://twitter.com/roflinds/status/1087486166939680768"> seven-second video</a>, but it's unclear who the speakers are in the split second they are on camera). </span></p><p><span>There is also no</span><span> evidence the students</span><span> "crashed" an Indigenous People's rally. Yet, both of those details made it into headlines and sold the original narrative, which days later continues to serve as the US' culture war totem of the moment.  </span></p><h2><span>One story, multiple perspectives</span></h2><p>The "Rashomon effect" borrows its name from the classic 1950 film directed by Akira Kurosawa, where a murder is convincingly retold by four people, each presenting a perspective that contradicts the other three. It was certainly in effect this weekend, with real-life consequences. </p><p>Based on the limited perspective provided by a viral video, at least one young man who was not even in DC over the weekend was falsely identified as one of the "MAGA hats," and <a href="https://twitter.com/PikePlaceTechie/status/1087117202749378560">according to his brother</a>, he and his family were doxxed, spammed, and threatened over the past several days. </p><p>The fallout from the apparently compromised BuzzFeed story similarly comes with real-world consequences. </p><p>A great many Trump supporters need no convincing that every journalist who reports on the president and his base in a less-than-flattering light is a fake news-propagating "enemy of the people." For them, no level of journalistic ethics would change their narrative. </p><p>But for those on the fence, any future reporting on Trump's business dealings with Russia will now carry the baggage of BuzzFeed's would-be history-making report turned punchline. </p><h2>The virtue of admitting imperfection</h2><p>There's no other way to say it: this was a bad weekend for the news media. In a country both bitterly divided with emotions permanently at a fever pitch, few minds were changed this weekend, but many were further entrenched.</p><p>The thirst to be first is nothing new in journalism, but the added dimension of social media incentivizes having an insta-take on everything, regardless of whether enough evidence is available to vet the narrative. In the digital media age, speed both rewards and destroys.</p><p>When journalists get it wrong, either on Twitter or in their actual work, the effective way to earn trust is to own the mistake, explain how it happened, and make a sincere good faith effort to not repeat it. Moving the goal posts or pivoting into an entirely different story doesn't undo the mistake, but it does provide fodder to those who believe journalists have sacrificed integrity in search of a pre-determined narrative. </p><p>On "<a href="http://wethefifth.com/">The Fifth Column</a>" podcast last week, CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter - a frequent defender of the media against Trump's relentless rhetorical assaults on reporters - described the profession of journalism as "imperfect." He added, "We're writing a rough, rough draft every day. We're not quite getting it right every day. But tomorrow's going to be better."</p><p>To err is human, but to earn trust, journalists must first admit fallibility and take a deep breath before running with a narrative before vetting the facts. </p><p class="tagline">This is an <keyword id="6356002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="opinion">opinion</keyword> column.
