There have been several large initial public offerings (IPOs) over the years, from the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India to the payments platform Paytm. Still, nothing comes close to what Hyundai is looking for. There have been six IPOs so far in India above the ₹10,000 crore mark and their performance has left a bad taste in the mouth for investors. Five out of the six companies that have raised over ₹10,000 crore from their IPO have listed at a discount, making it difficult for investors to exit. Hyundai seems to be heading a similar way, as its grey market premium (GMP) has completely eroded, with investors being sceptical about the country’s biggest IPO. In addition to the huge amount that the company is looking to raise, aspects such as increased competition in the auto sector, poor sales over the past few months and the IPO being an offer for sale (OFS) have impacted the prospects. On the listing day, LIC’s shares closed at ₹875.45, at a discount of ₹73.55, giving IPO investors a loss of 7.75%. <h3>Paytm</h3>The IPO of One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm is one for the history books. The company’s ₹18,300 crore IPO, which had an offer price of ₹2,150 closed at ₹1,564.15 on listing day, ₹585.56 less than the offer price, giving a listing day loss of 27.25%. <h3><keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India">Coal India</keyword></h3>Coal India is the only exception to the list as it is the only company that opened higher than its offer price, giving investors a profitable exit. The company’s ₹15,199.44 crore IPO was subscribed 15.2 times. Out of the 2,800 stocks traded during the day, 1,008 stocks saw advances, while 1,725 stocks saw declines, and another 67 stocks remained unchanged. 209 stocks touched their 52-week high price, and 27 stocks touched their 52-week low. 120 stocks hit the upper circuit during the day, while 93 stocks remained in the lower circuit. With the exception of Nifty 50 and 100, all other broad based indices closed the day in red. India VIX dipped by 2.41%, while small cap 50 plunged by 1.03%. As for sectoral indices, media (down by 1.89%) and realty (down by 1.70%) saw the maximum dips, while bank, FMCG, financial services ,oil and gas, healthcare and pharma closed the day in green. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares says that Indian bourses began the August month on a strong note above the psychological barrier of 25,000. "But, negative divergence in RSI pulled the Index lower to settle the trade at 25,010.90 with gains of 59.75 points. Among the sectors, Energy was the top gainer while media and realty corrected the most. Broader markets underperformed the frontline index as mid and small caps corrected by 0.85% &amp; 0.98% respectively. The Index has formed a Spinning Top candlestick pattern which represents indecisiveness where the downside seems to be protected at 24,930 while the immediate resistance is placed at 25,100", he continued.

Stock market closing: Nifty inches past 25,000-mark, Tata Steel, Hero Moto Corp amidst day's leading laggards

Emissions from residential cooking and heating, power generation, and industries together contribute up to 60 per cent of India's PM2.5 pollution, with about 80 per cent of this coming from <keyword id="23824528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-combustion" source="keywords">fossil fuel combustion</keyword>, a new study has found. The peer-reviewed study, published in MDPI's "Air" journal, suggests dividing India into 15 airsheds based on regional climate and pollution sources. An airshed is a geographic area where <keyword id="53848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-quality" source="Orion">air quality</keyword> is influenced by common factors such as wind patterns and pollution sources. Since pollution can spread across regions, the <keyword id="22077484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airshed-approach" source="keywords">airshed approach</keyword> promotes coordinated action among states. "Residential cooking and heating, power generation, and all other industries together are responsible for 40-60 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution in all the airsheds, and approximately 80 per cent of the pollution comes from fossil fuel burning sources," said Sarath Guttikunda, lead author of the study and founder of UrbanEmissions.info. The study said biomass burning, including post-harvest crop residue burning, contributed less than 3 per cent to annual PM2.5 levels while transport accounted for 5-10 per cent in all airsheds. PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less, about the width of a human hair. These are so small that these can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. An analysis of PM2.5 trends from 1998 to 2020, along with state-level data on fuel consumption, energy demand and emissions, revealed that 11 of the 15 airsheds were critical for India's air quality management and required coordinated interventions. The Indo-Gangetic Plains remain the most polluted region, with significant emissions from residential cooking and heating (especially in winter), power plants, brick kilns (driven by construction demand), waste burning, dust and vehicular movement for passengers and freight. The plateau region between the Eastern and Western Ghats, India's second most populated area, has seen the highest rise in annual PM2.5 pollution during this period, the study said. "This is an indication of the growing urbanisation and demand for transport, industrial, and commercial amenities," it said. Coastal areas, vital to India's industrial economy, have also experienced rising pollution despite the moderating effects of land-sea breezes. This increase is attributed to growing shipping emissions and overall industrial growth in cities such as Mundra, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia.

Washington, DC [US], May 17 (ANI): The <keyword id="19929596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-military" source="keywords">US military</keyword> warned that China is moving forward with developing <keyword id="21695791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="floating-nuclear-reactors" source="keywords">floating nuclear reactors</keyword> in the <keyword id="19911056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-China-Sea" source="keywords">South China Sea</keyword> to hold up its claim to the disputed maritime territory, a development, which analysts have stressed would pose risks to the environment, reported Voice of America (VOA). According to analysts, the plan to build ships with mobile nuclear power sources would raise tensions with its neighbours and pose risks to the environment. Chinese media reports described the <keyword id="21696232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marine-nuclear-power-platforms" source="Orion">marine nuclear power platforms</keyword> as small plants inside ships that would act as mobile "power banks" at sea for stationary facilities and other ships, VOA reported. However, Beijing had suspended the project a year ago over safety and effectiveness concerns, according to the South China Morning Post. But this month, the outgoing commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command and State Department Admiral John Aquilino said that China is still building the floating reactors to supply power to disputed islands, the Washington Post reported. Although the US officials said that the deployment of such reactors would take several years, Admiral John Aquilino said their development would undermine regional security and stability, VOA reported. Following this, last week, the Philippines echoed those concerns. Philippines National Security Council Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said that China would use its floating reactors to power military bases it has built on artificial islands, including those within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. He added that China's nuclear plants would further militarize disputed areas of the South China Sea. "Anything that supports their military presence in those islands is technically a threat to our national security and against our interests," he said, adding that Australia and the US would be among Manila's allies conducting joint patrols in the South China Sea, as reported by VOA. According to Beijing's claims, they have control over almost the entire South China Sea, putting it in dispute with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. Moreover, China has already built artificial islands with airport runways to strengthen its claims. The analysts said that Beijing's floating reactors would not only strengthen its military presence in the area but also give it an excuse to extend its reach through security actions, VOA reported. Song Yanhui, director of the International Law Society of the Republic of China, Taiwan, said that the current military security zone for China's artificial islands is a radius of 500 meters (1,640 feet), which means, other aircraft and ships that enter this radius can be legitimately expelled. Song continued that if China deploys a floating nuclear power plant in the South China Sea, it could use the excuse of protecting the environment from radioactive pollution to drive away ships from a larger area or to take defensive measures. For Beijing, he said, "It kills two birds with one stone. It is a win-win strategy. It can strengthen its military presence, civilian use and claim to sovereignty." But the potential for radiation leaks is a real concern, analysts said, reported VOA. Pankaj Jha, dean of research at the School of International Affairs of India's Jindal Global University, highlighted that China's lack of experience in operating such floating reactors could spell disaster. "It is a threat because it will contaminate water and also surrounding areas," he said. "Any radiation leak would make the island uninhabitable and might also impact fishermen from the South China Sea." In the event of a conflict with China, the analysts further noted that the floating reactors could also become military targets, reported VOA. China has deployed radars, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, and fighter jets, among other weapons, on the disputed territories of Mischief Reef, Subi Reef and Fiery Cross, the three largest artificial islands in the Spratly Islands. Richard Fisher, senior fellow with the International Assessment and Strategy Center, stressed that floating nuclear power plants could also one day extend China's weapons capabilities. "If they were protected, these nuclear power plants could also potentially power future energy weapon devices," Fisher said. "Laser weapons that could knock down missiles and aircraft or very powerful microwave weapons could also disable missiles and aircraft that would get within their range." Notably, China is not the first country to think of building floating nuclear reactors. The US took the lead in proposing the concept in 1970 but due to safety concerns, they did not quickly pursue development, reported VOA. Meanwhile, Russia is the only country that has brought a floating nuclear power plant to fruition, with the Akademik Lomonosov plant producing electricity and heating since 2020 from a harbour in Pevek, a town in the Arctic Circle. Earlier in November last year, the International Atomic Energy Agency at a forum in Vienna expressed concern about the development of floating nuclear reactors, particularly when they cross international borders or operate in international waters. "The IAEA is working with our member states to determine what further guidance and standards might be needed to ensure the safety of floating nuclear power plants," IAEA Deputy Director General Lydie Evrard said in a press release. The IAEA further noted that Canada, China, Denmark, South Korea, Russia and the US are each working on marine-based "small modular reactor designs."

India's <keyword id="19922493" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal" source="keywords">coal</keyword>-based power generation increased 7.14% to 872 billion units (BU) in the April-December period of the current fiscal. The rise in domestic coal-based electricity generation reflects an ample supply of coal to meet the growing energy demand in the country, the <keyword id="19922492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-ministry" source="keywords">coal ministry</keyword> said in a statement. Domestic coal-based power generation was 813.9 BU in the year-ago period, it said. In the country, power is generated from conventional sources -- thermal, nuclear and hydro-- and renewable sources -- wind, solar, biomass etc. Thermal power producers use coal as the main fuel to run the units and the dry fuel contributes to more than 70% of the total electricity generation. Coal-based power generation in the country registered a growth of around 10.13% during April-December period of FY'24, as compared to the corresponding period of previous year while overall power generation grew 6.71% during the same period, the ministry statement said. Coal imports for blending dropped by 40.66% to 17.08 MT during April-December period of current fiscal from 28.78 MT in the corresponding period of previous year, despite the rising power demand. "It showcases the nation's commitment to self-reliance in coal production and minimising overall coal imports," it said. Coal-based power generation has played a significant role in meeting India's energy demands. The country is experiencing a substantial increase in power demand, driven by a combination of factors like industrial growth, technological advancements, population growth, and economic development.

Coal India Limited (<keyword id="19983407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIL" source="keywords">CIL</keyword>) achieved an 8 per cent <keyword id="19910261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth" source="keywords">growth</keyword> in <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword>, reaching 189.3 million <keyword id="22246379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tonnes" source="keywords">tonnes</keyword> in the first quarter of the current fiscal, surpassing its target of 189.2 million tonnes, the company said in a statement on Monday. The company's production increased by 13.8 million tonnes compared to the corresponding quarter of FY'24, with all seven producing subsidiaries registering positive growth, it said. CIL's supplies also rose by 6 per cent to 198.4 million tonnes during April-June 2024, with a significant increase in supplies to both power and non-power sectors, it added. The company's coal loading witnessed healthy growth, with an average of 367.2 rakes per day, a 10.3 per cent year-on-year increase, it said. Higher production and loading resulted in a substantial increase in coal inventory at CIL's pitheads, reaching 81.5 million tonnes, providing a sufficient buffer to meet any sudden surge in demand, it said. At a time when power demand in the country is surging, the miner stepped up its supplies to coal-fired plants, registering a 4 per cent growth to 160 million tonnes in <keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword> FY'25, a year-on-year increase of 6 million tonnes. In the same period of FY 2024, CIL's off-take to thermal power plants stood at 154 million tonnes, the company said. Additionally, CIL's supplies to the non-power sector reached an all-time high of 38.4 million tonnes in Q1FY25, logging a 16 per cent growth. This sector had received 33 million tonnes in April-June 2023. The growth in June 2024 alone was 23 per cent at 13.4 million tonnes, the statement said. Coal India's Q1 production surges 8% to 189.3 million tonne in FY'25

The overall ROE has again improved to 12-13% amid increased profitability. “Government now sees monetisation of PSUs as a combination of dividends, stake sales and asset monetization. PSU top management performance also now has a component of stock performance. Governance improvements could drive longer term rerating for these companies,” said Jefferies in its report. The BSE PSU Index gained 3.42% on Wednesday, after dropping nearly 6% in the prior two trading sessions.
