Climate Action 15: 2024's top global innovators powering green solutions

Coal India Limited (<keyword id="19983407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIL" source="keywords">CIL</keyword>) achieved an 8 per cent <keyword id="19910261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth" source="keywords">growth</keyword> in <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword>, reaching 189.3 million <keyword id="22246379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tonnes" source="keywords">tonnes</keyword> in the first quarter of the current fiscal, surpassing its target of 189.2 million tonnes, the company said in a statement on Monday. The company's production increased by 13.8 million tonnes compared to the corresponding quarter of FY'24, with all seven producing subsidiaries registering positive growth, it said. CIL's supplies also rose by 6 per cent to 198.4 million tonnes during April-June 2024, with a significant increase in supplies to both power and non-power sectors, it added. The company's coal loading witnessed healthy growth, with an average of 367.2 rakes per day, a 10.3 per cent year-on-year increase, it said. Higher production and loading resulted in a substantial increase in coal inventory at CIL's pitheads, reaching 81.5 million tonnes, providing a sufficient buffer to meet any sudden surge in demand, it said. At a time when power demand in the country is surging, the miner stepped up its supplies to coal-fired plants, registering a 4 per cent growth to 160 million tonnes in <keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword> FY'25, a year-on-year increase of 6 million tonnes. In the same period of FY 2024, CIL's off-take to thermal power plants stood at 154 million tonnes, the company said. Additionally, CIL's supplies to the non-power sector reached an all-time high of 38.4 million tonnes in Q1FY25, logging a 16 per cent growth. This sector had received 33 million tonnes in April-June 2023. The growth in June 2024 alone was 23 per cent at 13.4 million tonnes, the statement said. AGEL is the clean energy unit of the Adani Group, the biggest coal miner and importer in India founded by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-gautam-adani-indian-industrialist-billionaire-wealth-elon-musk-2022-12">billionaire Gautam Adani</a> in 1988. Adani is currently the second richest person in Asia, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbesindia.com/article/explainers/top-10-richest-people-asia/88245/1">according to Forbes</a>.The Adani Group has promised to dump $70 billion into clean energy by 2030 — including $20 billion on this project alone — as India tries to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/19/business/india-adani-green-energy-plant-climate-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN reported</a>."There is no choice for India but to start doing things at a previously unimagined size and scale," Sagar Adani, the 30-year-old nephew of Gautum Adani and the executive director of AGEL, told CNN.India — the <a target="_blank" href="https://climatepromise.undp.org/what-we-do/where-we-work/india">third-largest energy consumer in the world</a>, 73% of which comes from coal — has pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/us-long-term-strategy.pdf">decades later than the US has pledged</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>TerraPower, which Bill Gates founded, plans to build its first nuclear power plant in the US.</li><li>CEO Chris Levesque told the Financial Times it wants to start work on a site in Wyoming in June.</li></ul>A company cofounded by Bill Gates is about to start building next-generation nuclear power plants in the US.Chris Levesque, CEO of TerraPower, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/418907d1-d497-439c-9800-eb814226ab71">the Financial Times</a> that his firm will start building at a site near a coal plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming in June, even if it hasn't received a construction permit from regulators by then. The company plans to bring the nuclear plant online in 2030, he added.TerraPower, which has raised $1 billion from backers, will use liquid sodium rather than water to cool its Natrium reactors, making them cheaper to run. Most of the initial work at the Kemmerer site won't be related to nuclear activity, Levesque said. "When you use liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water it's a game changer," he told the FT."Natrium plants will cost half of what light water reactor plants cost … and we are moving our project along pretty aggressively."Gates helped found TerraPower in 2006 and has been its chairman since then. The company has said its aim is to provide the world with a more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.terrapower.com/people/bill-gates/">affordable, secure, and environmentally friendly</a> form of nuclear energy.Its Natrium reactor is expected to cost $4 billion, with about half the cost being met by the Department of Energy. CRV and Khosla Ventures are among the company's VC backers, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65D4FG/">Reuters reported</a>.While Russian and Chinese state-controlled companies have already managed to launch smaller nuclear reactors, progress in developing similar tech in the US has stalled in recent years.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zirp-end-of-cushy-big-tech-job-perks-mass-layoffs-2024-2">High interest rates</a> have made it tougher for startups to draw in funding, while Russia's invasion of Ukraine and subsequent exclusion from financial markets has made it tougher for companies to get the uranium needed for their reactors.In December 2022, TerraPower pushed back the launch of its flagship project by at least two years, which Levesque attributed to the war in Ukraine hitting supplies of <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-war-in-ukraine-bill-gates-nuclear-startup-uranium-fuel-2022-12">high-assay, low-enriched uranium</a>.In October last year TerraPower missed out on making the shortlisted for the next round of the UK government's competition for small nuclear plants. Rolls-Royce is one of the leading contenders with its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rolls-royce-smr.com/">small modular reactor</a> (SMR) designs and has already secured more than £200m of government funding in Britain.

The plan is the latest move by the Biden administration to curb emissions that are fueling the climate crisis. The transportation and electricity sectors are the two largest sources of emissions, with the former accounting for 28% and the latter 25%, <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions#:~:text=The%20largest%20source%20of%20greenhouse,Greenhouse%20Gas%20Emissions%20and%20Sinks." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the EPA</a>. The White House is already pushing for a move to electric vehicles to <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/biden-harris-administration-proposes-strongest-ever-pollution-standards-cars-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce emissions from tailpipes</a>.Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy is key to cutting emissions in half this decade and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared with preindustrial levels. Climate scientists <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg2/chapter/summary-for-policymakers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warn that crossing that temperature threshold</a> would have catastrophic effects such as heat waves, flooding, drought, crop failures, and food insecurity. The world, on average, is <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/world-of-change/global-temperatures" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already at least 1.1 degrees</a> Celsius warmer.The EPA estimated that its power-plant proposal would avoid up to 617 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide emissions through 2042 — about the annual emissions of half the cars on the road in the US today. Natural gas is cleaner than coal, but it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that has more than <a href="https://www.edf.org/climate/methane-crucial-opportunity-climate-fight#:~:text=Methane%20has%20more%20than%2080,after%20it%20reaches%20the%20atmosphere" target="_blank" rel="noopener">80 times the warming power</a> of carbon dioxide over the first two decades it's in the atmosphere.Coal plants could also opt to shut down in the first half of the 2030s to avoid meeting most or even all pollution caps. It said emergency laws would allow Germany to boost the generation of electricity from coal for a limited period until March 2024."This is bitter, but it's essential in this situation to reduce gas consumption," Robert Habeck, economy minister and a senior member of the Green party, said in a statement.Germany said it intends to cut the use of natural gas so it can fill its storage tanks ahead of the winter, when demand rises."The situation is serious," Habeck, who is also vice chancellor, said. "We are therefore further strengthening precautions and taking additional measures to reduce gas consumption. This means gas consumption must continue to fall, so more gas must be stored, otherwise things will get really tight in winter."Germany's decision to turn back to coal power, which is highly carbon intensive, underscores how Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent surge in energy prices is threatening governments' climate policies. The German parliament passed a law in 2020 to phase out the use of coal entirely by 2038.Russia has said Gazprom's decision to slash natural gas flows to Germany is the result of Canadian sanctions which have meant key pieces of equipment are stuck in Montreal.But Germany has disputed this argument, pointing out that there are alternative pipelines that could be used.The move has sent natural gas prices soaring and raised the prospect of shortages of the vital energy source during the winter. Germany imported around half of its natural gas from Russia in 2021.Dutch TTF <a href="https://www.theice.com/products/27996665/Dutch-TTF-Gas-Futures/data?marketId=5396828&amp;span=2">natural gas futures</a>, the benchmark European price, were up around 5% Monday to 124 euros (or $130) per megawatt hour. That's a more than 500% increase from a year earlier.Germany's economy ministry said the reintroduction of coal plants could boost production by 10 gigawatts. Germany takes 'bitter' decision to fire up coal power plants as Russia chokes off its vital natural gas supplies

The region has become <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cushmanwakefield.com/en/united-states/news/2023/01/cw-releases-global-data-center-market-comparison-report">the ninth-largest data-center hub</a> in the world as tech companies build out their servers, cloud storage, and AI computing power.In September, Google broke ground on a $600 million facility in Mesa, just east of Phoenix. Amazon Web Services <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/mesa/2023/09/28/amazon-files-applications-to-build-2-data-centers-in-mesa/70991074007/">also plans to expand its existing footprint in the area with two data centers</a>. The developer Vantage Data Centers <a target="_blank" href="https://vantage-dc.com/news/vantage-data-centers-begins-phase-two-construction-at-growing-west-metro-phoenix-campus/">is in the second phase of a $1.5 billion campus</a>, and Stack Infrastructure <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stackinfra.com/about/news-events/press-releases/stack-infrastructure-plans-230mw-five-building-campus-in-central-phoenix/#:~:text=Denver%2C%20COLORADO%20%E2%80%94%20November%208%2C,heart%20of%20central%20Phoenix%2C%20Arizona.">is building a campus with five data centers</a>.Those projects are among an unprecedented pipeline that will require vast amounts of power. To keep up with demand, a Phoenix utility <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://media.srpnet.com/srp-board-approves-system-plan-strategies-to-bring-customers-affordable-reliable-and-sustainable-power/">under a recently approved plan</a> could add some 2 gigawatts of new natural-gas plants by 2035, said Caryn Potter, the Arizona representative for the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project, a nonprofit that monitors the plans of utilities in the region. That expansion would be in addition to several other already-approved natural gas projects. The plans were approved even though <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcc.gov/news/2022/01/27/arizona-electric-utilities-voluntarily-commit-to-100-clean-energy">Arizona's largest utilities pledged to move away from fossil fuels</a>."In comparison to other Arizona utilities, the Salt River Project is actually expanding their natural-gas resources at a much quicker pace than what we're seeing really across the region," Potter said, referring to the utility that serves part of Phoenix.Potter noted that the Salt River Project's draft plan <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://media.srpnet.com/srp-board-approves-system-plan-strategies-to-bring-customers-affordable-reliable-and-sustainable-power/">also includes 9.5 gigawatts of new renewable-energy capacity</a>, including solar, battery storage, and hydro storage. The utility studied various pathways to ensure the power grid is reliable to accommodate more extreme heat, more people, and more data centers.Data centers require around-the-clock power, which is a main reason the utility had to look at natural-gas resources, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/data-centers-energy-demand-utilities-green-renewable-2023-10">Karla Moran, an executive at the Salt River Project, told Insider</a>.Phoenix isn't the only region where data centers threaten to prolong the use of fossil fuels. An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/data-centers-energy-demand-utilities-green-renewable-2023-10">investigation by Insider's Dan Geiger and Ellen Thomas</a> also found that utilities in Omaha, Nebraska, and Northern Virginia are under similar pressure. The amount of electricity needed annually to power data centers in the US is expected to more than double by 2030 to 35 gigawatts, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/technology-media-and-telecommunications/our-insights/investing-in-the-rising-data-center-economy">McKinsey</a> — enough to power nearly 26.3 million homes.A utility in Omaha got approval to delay the retirement of a coal plant from 2023 to 2026 and build some new gas capacity as part of a larger investment in renewables. In Northern Virginia — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbre.com/insights/reports/global-data-center-trends-2023#:~:text=Northern%20Virginia%20remains%20the%20world's,regions%20due%20to%20strong%20demand">the largest data-center market in the world</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-data-centers-energy-grid-electricity-virginia-2023-8">Amazon Web Service's top hub</a> — a utility is also considering delaying the retirement of two coal plants and building new gas plants."There is a pathway in the power-generation and utility sector to become 80% to 90% decarbonized," Potter said. "It's that last 10% that's going to be tricky. But Arizona still has a lot of gas on the system, as well as coal-fired power plants that don't have a public commitment to be retired yet. So I feel strongly that we need to prioritize renewables and energy efficiency to the fullest extent before we invest in so much more gas."
