However, in August 2024, overall <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> decreased slightly to 62.67 MT, down from 67.76 MT in August 2023. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> and supply trends for the period from April to August 2024 show a positive trajectory, despite some short-term variations in the month of August 24, due to above normal precipitation impacting the mining and mobility. In terms of <keyword id="6356966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal" source="Orion">coal</keyword> supply across the country during the same period, from April to August 2024, it stood at 412.69 MT, with an increase of 5.17 per cent compared to 392.40 MT during the corresponding period of last year. In August 2024, however, coal supply fell slightly to 69.94 MT, compared to 75.19 MT in August 2023 Coal supply to the power sector remains a key priority. Between April and August 2024, supply to the power sector reached 338.75 MT, a growth of 4.13 per cent over the 325.33 MT supplied during the same period last year. In August 2024, the supply to the power sector was 58.07 MT, slightly lower than the 61.43 MT recorded in August 2023. As of 31st August 2024, coal stock levels at thermal power plants saw a significant increase, reaching 37.18 MT, a 32.08 per cent growth compared to 28.15 MT on the same day in 2023. These results reflect the <keyword id="19923650" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ministry-of-coal" source="keywords">Ministry of Coal</keyword>'s commitment to ensuring stable coal production and supply to meet the country's energy needs, while addressing the operational challenges in the sector. The agency has also named T Chandini, the then director in the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, for favouring the company as member secretary of the Expert Appraisal Committee ((EAC) in allowing mining in the Talabira-I mine in the critically polluted area of Odisha's Jharsuguda in violation of ministry guidelines, they said. The central probe agency registered an FIR against Hindalco and Chandini under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act after a nearly eight-year-long preliminary inquiry. Reacting to the FIR, a Hindalco spokesperson said, "This is an old matter pertaining to 2014-15. These mines were de-allocated as part of the government's de-allocation process. This is a matter of public record where more than 100 mines were de-allocated." The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the preliminary inquiry in 2016 on allegations that the Aditya Birla Management Corporation Private Limited (ABMCPL) had allegedly paid "massive bribes" between 2011 and 2013 to ministry officials for getting mandatory <keyword id="20082436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmental-clearance" source="keywords">environmental clearance</keyword> to mine coal from Talabira. The findings of the inquiry showed that the ministry had made it mandatory in 2006 for a company to seek environment clearances for all new projects, expansion of existing products and any change in the product mix in an existing manufacturing unit. The projects needing prior environmental clearance were supposed to go through the EAC, consisting of experts from different disciplines. The clearance was given by the regulatory authority based on the EAC's recommendation. Hindalco received its first environmental clearance in 2001 for mining 0.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of coal from the Talabira-I mine. Another clearance was given in January 2009 for its expansion, allowing the increase in mining from 0.4 MTPA to 1.5 MTPA. Nearly a month after the second clearance, the company sought to double its capacity to 3 MTPA, which was to be considered by the EAC, it said. It emerged that the company had allegedly violated clearances given in 2001 and 2009 by producing more coal than permitted by the ministry, the FIR said. The company allegedly mined 3.04 MTPA excess coal from 2004-05 to 2007-08 and 2008-09, it said. "This fact became known during the process of consideration by the EAC of which T Chandini, director, was the member secretary," the FIR alleged. The Odisha State Pollution Control Board and the Central Pollution Control Board confirmed during the inquiry that the Talabira mine was in the critically polluted area of Jharsuguda, the CBI alleged. According to ministry rules, in-pipeline projects in critically polluted areas or those applying after January 13, 2010, were to be returned to the project proponent by member secretaries with the approval of the advisor. The inquiry showed that Chandini, despite being fully aware that the company was mining excess coal in violation of previous environmental clearances, did not return the project, as stipulated in the ministry circular. "Rather she acted to the contrary in as much as the proposal of HIL (Hindalco) was continued to be processed which amounted to misuse of her official position to favour HIL," the CBI FIR has alleged. Chandini, by misusing her official position, communicated to Hindalco that their proposal for grant environmental clearance would be considered in the next meeting of the EAC to be held on February 25 and 25, 2010, the agency alleged. She allegedly ensured that the clearance was granted in haste, considering the fact that Hindalco was already in violation of earlier clearances granted by the ministry, as it was already mining excess coal from the Talabira-I coal mine, it said. CBI books Hindalco for corruption in green clearance for Talabira coal mining

State-owned <keyword id="20039085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India Ltd">Coal India Ltd</keyword>'s contribution to the <keyword id="21546749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-exchequer" source="keywords">government exchequer</keyword> increased by 6.4 per cent to Rs 60,140.31 crore in <keyword id="19910780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY24" source="keywords">FY24</keyword>, over the financial year 2022-23. <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords">Coal India</keyword> Ltd (CIL), which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output, paid Rs 56,524.11 crore to the government exchequer in FY23, according to provisional figures of the coal ministry. Total levies paid to the government in March 2024 also went up by 14.8 per cent to Rs 6,069.18 crore from Rs 5,282.59 crore paid in the corresponding month of FY23. Of the total Rs 60,140.42 crore paid to the government exchequer in FY24, maximum amount of Rs 13,268.55 crore was made to the state government of Jharkhand, followed by Rs 12,836.20 crore to the Odisha government, Rs 11,890.79 crore to Chhattisgarh, Rs 10,865.96 crore to Madhya Pradesh, and Rs 6,188.89 crore to Maharashtra among others. The coal-producing states earned the <keyword id="19945274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue" source="keywords">revenue</keyword> from royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) among others. The government had earlier said that the coal-producing states earned a revenue of Rs 1.52 lakh crore in the last nine years from royalty, DMF and NMET. Coal mining sector has proved to be a big booster for the economic growth of the states that produce fossil fuel. State governments are entitled to receive 14 per cent of royalty on the sale price of coal and 30 per cent of the royalty as contribution towards the proposed district mineral foundations (DMFs)-- which is meant to support project-affected people---and two per cent of NMET from dry-fuel produced by the coal companies and also the private sector. In case of captive, commercial mines states are also entitled to receive the revenue share offered by the auction holder in a transparent bidding process. Apart from this, state governments also benefit from increased employment, land compensation, increased investment in allied infrastructure like railways, road and several other economic benefits. Coal India's production and off-take are pegged at 838 MT for FY'25. Coal India's contribution to govt exchequer rises 6.4% to ₹60,140 crore in FY24

State-owned <keyword id="3740158" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nlc-india-ltd" source="Orion">NLC India Ltd</keyword> on Monday said its board has approved raising up to Rs 5,000 crore through issuance of debentures in the ongoing financial year. The company's board has also approved a proposal for incorporation of a wholly-owned subsidiary company to take over the existing renewable assets. "The board of directors approved the following issuance of bonds in the nature of debentures up to Rs 5,000 crore in tranches during the FY 2023-24," the company said in a regulatory filing. Under the <keyword id="273072" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-coal" source="Orion">Ministry of Coal</keyword>, <keyword id="3561351" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nlc-india" source="Orion">NLC India</keyword> operates three opencast lignite mines having a total of capacity 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Neyveli in <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, one opencast lignite mine at Barsingsar in Rajasthan with an installed capacity of 2.10 MTPA and an open cast coal mine at Talabira in Odisha with an installed capacity of 20 MTPA. The Ministry said that India's coal production increased by 32.57 per cent to 67.59 Million Tonne (MT) from 50.98 MT during June 2021. According to the provisional statistics of the Ministry of Coal, during June this year, <keyword id="59700" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coal-india-ltd" source="Orion">Coal India Ltd</keyword> (CIL), <keyword id="778964" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="singareni-collieries-company-ltd" source="Orion">Singareni Collieries Company Ltd</keyword> (SCCL) and captive mines / others registered a growth of 28.87 per cent, 5.50 per cent and 83.53 per cent by producing 51.56 MT, 5.56 MT and 10.47 MT respectively. Of the top 37 coal mines, as many as 22 mines produced more than 100 per cent and production at another nine mines stood between 80 and 100 per cent. At the same time, coal despatch increased by 20.69 per cent to 75.46 MT from 62.53 MT during June 2022 as compared to June 2021. During June 22, CIL and Captives/Others registered a growth of 15.20 per cent and 88.23 per cent by dispatching 58.98 and 11.05 MT respectively. SCCL registered a negative growth of 0.46 per cent during the month. The power utilities dispatch has grown by 30.77 per cent to 64.89 MT during June this year as compared to 49.62 MT in June 21 due to increase in power demand. Coal based power generation has registered a growth of 26.58 per cent in June 2022 as compared to June 2021. The overall power generation in June 2022 has been 17.73 per cent higher than in June 2021. However, Coal based power generation in the month of June 2022 has been 95,880 MU in comparison to 98,609 MU in May 2022 and registered a negative growth of 2.77 per cent. Total power generation has also decreased in June 2022 to 1,38,995 MU from 1,40,059 MU in May 2022 and registered a negative growth of 0.76 per cent. Coal production rose by 32% and coal-fired power generation increased too, says ministry

New Delhi, India's total <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> rose 8.40 per cent to 222.93 million tonne (MT) in April-June 2023-24, an official statement said on Monday. The country's overall coal output was 205.65 MT in the year-ago quarter, the Ministry of Coal said. Captive mines /others registered a growth of 4.74 per cent to 30.48 MT in Q1 FY24, from 29.10 MT in Q1 FY23. The cumulative coal dispatch grew 6.97 per cent to 239.69 MT in Q1 this fiscal compared to 224.08 MT in Q1 of FY23. The total coal stock, as of June 30, 2023, surged 37.62 per cent to 107.15 MT (provisional) from 77.86 MT a year ago. "This growth indicates the continued efforts to meet the rising demand for coal," the ministry said. State-owned <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-India" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) has recorded 9.85 per cent growth, with production reaching 175.35 MT in Q1 FY24 compared to 159.63 MT a year ago. India will not face any coal shortage this year, even during the monsoon, Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi said last month.
