Chennai, Public sector major <keyword id="59700" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-india-ltd" source="Orion">Coal India Ltd</keyword> (CIL) has chalked out Rs 24,750 crore investment for eco-friendly transportation of coal on 61 first mile connectivity (FMC) projects. The three phased investment project when completed will have a combined capacity of 763.5 million ton per annum (MTPA), the company said. FMC projects involve transportation of coal in mechanized piped conveyors from production point to coal handling plants/silos with rapid loading system where coal is loaded directly into <keyword id="1060490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rail-wagons" source="Orion">rail wagons</keyword>. According to the company, 35 FMC projects under the first phase having 414.5 MTPA capacity account for Rs. 10,750 crores. Eight projects of 112 MTPA capacity are already operational. CIL is gearing up to commission 17 more projects of 178 MTPA by FY 2024 end. The rest 10 comprising 124.5 MTPA capacity are expected to be operative by FY 2025, the company said. The second and third phase projects account for nine and 17 respectively. While their respective evacuation capacities are 57 MTPA and 292 MTPA, the investments sequentially, would be about Rs 2,500 crore and Rs11,500 crore. Under the second phase five projects of 21.5 MTPA capacity under construction are expected to be commissioned by FY 2025. Remaining projects are in different stages of progress with tenders issued and bid documents under preparation. For the third phase, tenders have been floated for three projects of 65 MTPA capacity. Nine projects are to be executed through mine developers and operators. The third phase projects are anticipated to be commissioned by FY 2029. Total eco-friendly coal evacuation would go up to 914.5 MTPA when all the 61 projects become operational by FY 2029, including the earlier capacity of 151 MTPA. FMC projects offer benefits like suppression of dust pollution and carbon emissions and reduce the load on road transportation leading to safety. Other benefits include precise quantity and quality coal is loaded for consumers with minimal manual intervention.

In his remarks to the International Energy Agency 'Clean Energy Transition Summit', UN Secretary General Guterres urged the international community to commit to no new coal and to end all external financing of coal in the developing world. "Coal has no place in COVID-19 recovery plans. Nations must commit to net-zero emissions by 2050 and submit more ambitious national climate plans before COP-26 next year," he said. "The seeds of change are there. Renewable energy is the only energy source expected to grow in 2020. Solar auctions have seen popularity amidst the height of the pandemic. India serves as a good example. Renewables offer three times more jobs than the fossil fuel industry," Guterres said. Last month, Adani Green Energy said it has bagged the first of its kind manufacturing-linked solar contract worth Rs 45,000 crore from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to develop 8 GW electricity generation capacity and 2 GW equipment manufacturing facility in the country. Guterres said he has asked all countries to consider six climate positive actions as they rescue, rebuild and reset their economies. "We need to make our societies more resilient. We need green jobs and sustainable growth," he said, adding that bailout support to sectors such as industry, aviation and shipping should be conditioned on alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Countries also need to stop wasting money on fossil fuel subsidies and place a price on carbon, he said, noting that countries need to consider climate risk in their decision making. "Every financial decision must take account of environmental and social impacts. Overall, we need to work together." Guterres said while he is encouraged that some COVID-19 response and recovery plans put the transition from fossil fuels at their core, some countries have used stimulus plans to prop up oil and gas companies that were already struggling financially and others have chosen to jumpstart coal-fired power plants that don't make financial or environmental sense. He stressed that nations must limit temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius to avert more and worse disasters. "This means net-zero emissions by 2050, and 45 per cent cuts by 2030 from 2010 levels. This is still achievable." The UN chief noted that the rationale for the clean energy pathway is economics. "Per kilowatt hour, solar energy is now cheaper than coal in most countries. If we had any doubt about the direction the wind is blowing, the real economy is showing us," he said, adding that the business case for renewable energy is now better than coal in virtually every market. New Delhi, Jan 28 () State-owned Coal India (CIL) has received green clearances for 17 mining projects, a move that will enable the world's largest coal miner to achieve one-billion-tonne production target, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi has said.
 In a tweet the minister said: "For making PM @NarendraModi Ji's vision of 24x7 'Power for All' a reality, @CoalMinistry in co-ordination with @moefcc has got the environment clearances to 17 new and existing coal projects and 3 washeries of @CoalIndiaHQ..."
 "These clearances will add 150 million tonnes of coal in @CoalIndiaHQ kitty in next five years and increase its washing capacity by 25 MTPA enabling the company to achieve 1 billion tonnes of coal production by FY23-24," he tweeted.
 The state-owned company will produce 750 million tonnes of coal in the next financial year, the coal ministry had earlier said.
 CIL will further produce one billion tonnes of coal by FY2024, it had said.
 The PSU is currently given the target of producing 660 million tonnes of coal amounting to 82 per cent of the country's coal output.
 In its annual report 2018-19, the company had said 54 of its coal mining projects were facing delays due to various reasons such as contractual issues and delay in green clearances among others.
 "A total of 120 coal projects costing Rs 20 crore and above are in different stages of implementation. Out of which 66 projects are on schedule and 54 projects are delayed," Coal India had said.
 The major reasons for delay in implementation of these projects are delays in obtaining environment clearance, forest clearance, possessions of land and issues related to resettlement and rehabilitation, contractual issues and evacuation facilities among others. SID SID ANS

Largely impacted by the ban, the tile manufacturing units have <a href="https://realty.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/allied-industries/ngts-order-banning-coal-gasifiers-in-morbi-to-adversely-impact-tile-industry-icra/68373711">shut down</a>, switching to natural gas as an alternate. The switch, however, may increase fuel expenses for the manufacturers considering the PNG prices. Hope floats that this would close the price gap between unorganised players in Morbi and branded tile makers like Kajaria Ceramics, Somany Ceramics, Cera Sanitaryware, and Asian Granito and help these companies gain market share. According to media reports, of the 800 ceramic units in total, over 400 wall tile plants running majorly on coal gasifiers have been closed so far owing to shortage of raw material that has been impacting the operation costs for these units. The Morbi ceramic industry had expected a huge growth. In fact, the industry is reportedly planning to establish 50 new wall tiles manufacturing plants. After the ban on March 6, the production has reportedly <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/after-ngt-crackdown-450-ceramic-units-prepare-to-switch-to-gas/articleshow/68365929.cms">dropped</a> by 60%-70%. "Among these units, those most affected will be the wall tile and soluble salt tile manufacturers as they were meeting nearly their entire thermal energy requirements through coal gasifiers," Suprio Banerjee, vice president and head, Mid-Corporate ratings of ICRA reportedly said. India being the third largest ceramic producer in the world has been eyeing the global market. Climate scientists maintain that deep emissions reductions are needed by the end of the decade if humanity is to keep climate change in check. The federal government was lashed for the plan it took to Glasgow, which vowed to reduce emissions by between 26% and 28% by 2030, well under targets set by the UK and the US. However, Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor have already said that plan is “fixed”. “We are committed to meeting and beating it, as we did with our Kyoto-era targets,” they said in a joint statement on Sunday. Adani Enterprises faces another delay in implementing its $15 billion coal mine project in Australia, amid worries that a port expansion to accommodate the project may hurt the world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. 
 
Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt has extended his review of Adani’s A$16.5 billion ($15.5 billion) Carmichael Coal and Rail Project to August 1, a spokesperson for the minister said. 
 
The project in the untapped Galilee Basin, designed to produce 60 million tonnes of thermal coal a year, has been attacked by green groups who are opposed to both new coal mines and the rail lines and ports needed to ship the coal. 
 
Abbot Point, the port that Adani plans to use, is facing a legal challenge from green groups fighting an expansion that will dredge up three million cubic metres of sand. The sand will be dumped near the Great Barrier Reef. 
 
The government’s move to put off a decision on the project comes just as UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is due to vote on a proposal for putting the Great Barrier Reef in the ‘endangered’ list. 
 
“Approving (the project) now would have been tantamount to an act of provocation, with UNESCO currently mulling the status of Australia’s greatest natural icon,” said Ben Pearson, Greenpeace programme head.

Nagpur, Jun 21 () Coal India Limited (CIL) will engage mine developer cum operators (MDOs) to increase its coal output and reduce import dependency of the dry fuel in the coming years. The Maharatna coal mining behemoth in the process has identified a total of 15 greenfield projects to operate through MDO model of which 12 are open cast and 3 underground, a release by Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) - subsidiary of CIL - said. Combined, they have a total targeted capacity of around 168 million tonne/year (MTY). While the OC projects have a targeted capacity of 162 MTY, UG projects have close to 6 MTY. The contract period would be for 25 years or life of mine whichever is less. "CIL will engage MDOs of international repute, having state-of-the-art-technology through open global tenders, who shall excavate, extract and deliver coal to the coal companies of CIL as per the approved mining plan. "CIL's board recently has given its nod in regard to standard bid document and request for bids for the engagement of MDOs. CIL is laying out plans to complete the formalities by 2021-22 so that all projects become operational and start yielding the output to contribute in 1 BT by 2023-24," it said. It further informed that upcoming identified projects of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, South Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields Limited will form major segments for the MDO mode with targeted capacities of 65.5 MTY, 52.4 MTY and 45 MTY, respectively. Eastern Coalfields Limited and Northern Coalfields Limited will have projects with targeted capacities of 3 MTY and 2 MTY, respectively. "Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) for 2 Projects, Siarmal OC of MCL (40 MTY) and Kotre-Basantpur Pachmo of CCL (5 MTY) together having a targeted capacity of 45 MTY has been floated in 2019-20. While NIT for 5 Projects for a targeted capacity of 68 MTY will be floated in the ongoing fiscal, for the balance 8 projects NIT will be floated in the fiscal, 2021- 22," the release said. It also informed reputed MDOs would be engaged to have multiple advantage of technology infusion, and operational efficiency in the system apart from increased production. MDOs will facilitate R&amp;R issues, land acquisitions, green clearances and coordination with state and central pollution boards.
