It was complete mayhem on the bourses today, as <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> and <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> slumped by over 1% each. While Nifty ended the day at 24,472.10 points, down by 1.25%, Sensex tumbled a massive 930 points to close the day at 80,220.72 points. The pullback was majorly caused by large stocks such as <keyword id="20146941" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Electronics-Limited" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bharat Electronics Limited" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Bharat Electronics Limited">Bharat Electronics Limited</keyword>, <keyword id="20480977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-and-Mahindra" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Mahindra and Mahindra" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Mahindra and Mahindra">Mahindra and Mahindra</keyword>, <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India">Coal India</keyword>, and <keyword id="22754225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Entertainment" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Adani Entertainment" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Adani Entertainment">Adani Entertainment</keyword>, which fell by more than 3%, and SBI, which dipped by 2.97%.<br /><br />Both midcap and smallcap indices also witnessed significant bloodshed, with midcap 50 falling by 2.45% during the day, midcap 100 dipping by 2.61%, smallcap 100 tumbling by 3.92%, smallcap 50 falling by 3.7%, and microcaps plummeting 4.14%. Amidst the constituents of Nifty50, only 3 stocks advanced today, while 47 others saw declines.<br /><br />Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, highlights that almost all the sectors ended in the red, with PSU Banks and Realty being the major laggards. "The weak link of the markets, i.e., mid- and small-caps, tumbled by 2.61% and 3.92% and underperformed the frontline index. Considering the oversold conditions in the mid- and small-cap segments, a short-term bounce can be expected in the markets, which may push the index higher, but the upside seems to be capped at 24,670".<br /><br />Rajesh Bhosale, equity technical analyst at Angel One, cautions traders against taking long positions until there are clear signs of a bullish reversal. "The midcap space, in particular, saw a sharp decline, breaking below key support levels, signaling more pain ahead—bottom-fishing in this sector should be avoided for now," he added.<br /><br />Investor wealth worth Rs 8.98 lakh crore was wiped off the markets today, with the BSE m-cap dipping from Rs 453.65 lakh crore yesterday to Rs 444.66 crore today. Broader mid- and small-cap indices saw their worst losses since August, riding on the back of disappointing earnings and cautious management guidance for the upcoming quarters. As such, hefty profit-booking ensued to make the most of still elevated valuations.<br /><br /> <h2>FIIs on a heavy selling spree</h2> The massacre in the markets comes amidst heavy offloading of stakes by FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>). Data suggests so far this month, FIIs have offloaded a staggering Rs 82,479.73 crore in Indian markets. DIIs (<keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-institutional-investors" source="keywords">domestic institutional investors</keyword>) have been trying to maintain some semblance and balance in the markets, having bought 77,402.11 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets. However, that has proved insufficient for maintaining the positive momentum of the markets.<br /><br />The last time Indian markets had witnessed such intense selling was in 2021–22, i.e., during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from NSDL suggests that during this period, FPIs had sold Rs 1,22,242 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets.<br /><br />Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, highlights that mid- and small-caps bore the brunt of earnings disappointments, as these are also the segments most stretched on many valuation metrics. "Growth slowdown concerns, along with uncertainty on rate cut timing, act as a double whammy for equity markets, especially after recent inflation data surprised sharply to the upside," he added. <br /><br />Looking ahead, the markets will continue to focus on the earnings announcements. Investors will look to the RBI's monetary policy meeting minutes tomorrow and the HSBC Manufacturing, Services, and Composite PMI data on Thursday for further signals to act upon. <br />

Still, nothing comes close to what Hyundai is looking for.<br /><br />There have been six IPOs so far in India above the ₹10,000 crore mark and their performance has left a bad taste in the mouth for investors. Five out of the six companies that have raised over ₹10,000 crore from their IPO have listed at a discount, making it difficult for investors to exit.<br /><br />Hyundai seems to be heading a similar On the listing day, LIC’s shares closed at ₹875.45, at a discount of ₹73.55, giving IPO investors a loss of 7.75%.<br /><br /><h3>Paytm</h3>The IPO of One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm is one for the history books. The company’s ₹18,300 crore IPO, which had an offer price of ₹2,150 closed at ₹1,564.15 on listing day, ₹585.56 less than the offer price, giving a listing day loss of 27.25%.<br /><br /><h3><keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India">Coal India</keyword></h3>Coal India is the only exception to the list as it is the only company that opened higher than its offer price, giving investors a profitable exit. The company’s ₹15,199.44 crore IPO was subscribed 15.2 times. Coal India’s shares, which had an offer price of ₹245 closed at ₹342.35 on listing day, at a gain of ₹97.35 to investors, a 39.73% profit.<br /><br /><h3><keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword></h3>Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Power’s ₹11,563.2 crore IPO, which was oversubscribed by 73 times amid much fanfare had a disastrous listing. The company’s share, which had an offer price of ₹450, closed at ₹372.5 on listing day, at a discount of ₹77.5 from the offer price, a loss of 17.22%.<br /><br /><h3>General Insurance Corporation of India</h3>General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC), which had an ₹11,175.84 crore IPO was subscribed 1.3 times. India VIX dipped by 2.41%, while small cap 50 plunged by 1.03%. As for sectoral indices, media (down by 1.89%) and realty (down by 1.70%) saw the maximum dips, while bank, FMCG, financial services ,oil and gas, healthcare and pharma closed the day in green. <br /><br />Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares says that Indian bourses began the August month on a strong note above the psychological barrier of 25,000. <br /><br />"But, negative divergence in RSI pulled the Index lower to settle the trade at 25,010.90 with gains of 59.75 points. Among the sectors, Energy was the top gainer while media and realty corrected the most. Broader markets underperformed the frontline index as mid and small caps corrected by 0.85% &amp; 0.98% respectively. The Index has formed a Spinning Top candlestick pattern which represents indecisiveness where the downside seems to be protected at 24,930 while the immediate resistance is placed at 25,100", he continued. <br />

"On a sectoral front, realty was the top gainer followed by FMCG and IT while media corrected the most. Profit booking led correction was witnessed in the Pharma segment. As of 2:15 pm today, HMIL's shares were trading at Rs 1,910.00 on NSE, up by 4.97%.<br /><br />On BSE, shares of HMIL were also up by 4.76%, trading at Rs 1,907. The IPO had a price band of Rs 1,865-1,960 per share. Yesterday, Hyundai Motors India experienced a muted debut on the exchanges, opening at Rs 1,934, at a discount of Rs 26, or 1.3%, below the issue price of Rs 1,960. The dull debut resulted in <keyword id="23654838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="listing-day-losses" source="keywords">listing day losses</keyword> worth 7.16% for investors. <br /><br />The stock slipped even further to close the day at Rs 1,819.6, about 6% below the issue price. Even LIC's listing had yielded listing-day losses of about 7.75% for investors. <br /><br />Only Coal India's issue worth Rs 15,199 crore, which opened for subscription in 2010, and Zomato's issue worth Rs 9,375 crore in 2021 have managed to duck this trend. Here’s a rundown of the most infamous scams in Indian financial history:<br /><h2><keyword id="20713434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harshad-mehta" source="keywords">Harshad Mehta</keyword> Scam (1992) – ₹4,000 Crore<br /></h2>Perhaps the most iconic of all Indian financial scams, Harshad Mehta was known as the "Big Bull" of the stock market. He manipulated stock prices using illegal loopholes in the banking system. By obtaining unsecured loans from banks and investing them in the stock market, Mehta artificially inflated stock prices. His bubble burst when banks demanded their money back, revealing the massive fraud. This scandal led to a major reform in India's financial markets.<br /><br />Mehta died in jail before full legal accountability was reached, but the scam caused a significant loss to investors and led to tighter regulation in the Indian stock market.<br /><h2><keyword id="23122396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satyam-scam" source="keywords">Satyam Scam</keyword> (2009) – ₹14,000 Crore<br /></h2>Dubbed as India’s Enron, the Satyam scandal involved its founder, <keyword id="23122397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramalinga-raju" source="keywords">Ramalinga Raju</keyword>, admitting to falsifying the company's accounts to the tune of ₹14,000 crore. Satyam Computer Services, once considered a blue-chip company, was found guilty of inflating profits and revenues. Raju admitted to the scam after a failed attempt to buy two Maytas firms owned by his family. This case brought corporate governance issues in India to the forefront.<br /><br />Raju was convicted, but the legal processes have allowed him temporary freedom through bail. But this incident called for improved transparency and stricter corporate governance norms.<br /><h2>Punjab National Bank Scam (2018) – ₹13,700 Crore<br /></h2>Diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi orchestrated one of the largest frauds in Indian banking history by obtaining fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) from Punjab National Bank (PNB). These LoUs allowed them to obtain loans from foreign branches of Indian banks without providing any collateral. The scam involved over ₹13,700 crore, and Modi fled the country, causing significant reputational damage to India’s banking sector.<br /><br />Nirav Modi’s extradition is still pending, and Mehul Choksi remains out of India’s legal jurisdiction. Vijay Mallya allegedly defaulted on loans amounting to ₹9,000 crore from various banks. He fled to the UK in 2016, leaving creditors, employees, and stakeholders in financial distress. His lavish lifestyle amidst the collapse of his airline made this scandal a high-profile case.<br /><br />Mallya’s extradition process is ongoing, but he remains out of reach of Indian authorities. The main impact was enhanced scrutiny of loan defaults and triggered legal reforms on extradition.<br /><h2>Saradha Chit Fund Scam (2013) – ₹2,500 Crore<br /></h2>The Saradha Group, operating a ponzi scheme disguised as a chit fund, promised unrealistically high returns to its investors, mostly in West Bengal and Odisha. The scam collapsed, leaving over 1.7 million people, many of whom were low-income investors, without their life savings. Politicians and celebrities were also implicated in the case.<br /><br />While Sudipta Sen is behind bars, not all the accomplices have been held accountable. Telecom minister A. Raja was at the centre of this controversy, which allegedly caused a loss of ₹1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer. The case was seen as a massive blow to public trust in India’s telecom sector and led to significant political fallout.<br /><br />Sadly, all key figures involved were acquitted despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and cancellation of 122 telecom licences.<br /><br /><h2><keyword id="455134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-allocation-scam" source="Orion">Coal Allocation Scam</keyword> (Coalgate) (2012) – ₹1,86,000 Crore<br /></h2>The coal allocation scam, or "Coalgate," involved the illegal allocation of coal blocks to private companies between 2004 and 2009. The CAG of India estimated a loss of ₹1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer due to non-competitive bidding. Many high-profile politicians and industrialists were implicated, making this one of the largest political scandals in India.<br /><br />While some officials faced legal consequences, many key players were not prosecuted. But it did trigger policy reforms in the allocation of natural resources.<br /><br /><h2>DHFL Scam (2019) – ₹34,615 Crore<br /></h2>Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) was accused of syphoning off over ₹34,000 crore through a series of shell companies and fraudulent loans. Investigations revealed that the promoters used these funds for personal enrichment and illegal political donations. The case came to light after an investigation by investigative journalists and was later confirmed by a report from KPMG.<br /><br />The case is ongoing, and the main accused are in custody. For now, regulations governing non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) have been strengthened.<br /><br /><h2>Yes Bank Crisis (2020) – ₹3,788 Crore<br /></h2>Yes Bank, under its founder <keyword id="19899935" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rana-kapoor" source="keywords">Rana Kapoor</keyword>, was involved in questionable lending practices. The bank made high-risk loans to companies already in financial trouble, which eventually turned into non-performing assets (NPAs). This is also the first instance where an international giant (Hyundai Motor Group is based out of South Korea) will be listing its subsidiary (<keyword id="19908548" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai Motor India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai Motor India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword>) in an overseas market. <br /><br />Additionally, the company is also looking to raise Rs 8,315.28 crore from <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>, who will begin bidding on October 14th, 2024. Hyundai is the third largest auto original equipment manufacturer (OEM) globally, based on passenger vehicle sales.<br /><br /> "We have been in India now for more than 26 years. We have a very high market share. We are at number two position in India in the passenger vehicle space. We have got so much love and affection from the people of India. So we believe this is the right time to take one step forward and even further Indianize our operations," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) COO Tarun Garg told PTI in an interaction. <br /><br />Garg further added that the whole aim is to really become the most trusted brand of India. On being asked why they choose India for launching their IPO, he noted that the brand Hyundai has really been accepted very well in India, which is why it is probably the right country to really go for the IPO. <br /><br />Hyundai has set a price band of Rs 1,865-1,960 per share for the IPO, taking the company's valuation to Rs 1.6 lakh crore, or $19 billion.
