Total levies paid to the government in March 2024 also went up by 14.8 per cent to Rs 6,069.18 crore from Rs 5,282.59 crore paid in the corresponding month of FY23. Of the total Rs 60,140.42 crore paid to the government exchequer in FY24, maximum amount of Rs 13,268.55 crore was made to the state government of Jharkhand, followed by Rs 12,836.20 crore to the Odisha government, Rs 11,890.79 crore to Chhattisgarh, Rs 10,865.96 crore to Madhya Pradesh, and Rs 6,188.89 crore to Maharashtra among others. The coal-producing states earned the <keyword id="19945274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue" source="keywords">revenue</keyword> from royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) among others. The government had earlier said that the coal-producing states earned a revenue of Rs 1.52 lakh crore in the last nine years from royalty, DMF and NMET. Coal mining sector has proved to be a big booster for the economic growth of the states that produce fossil fuel. State governments are entitled to receive 14 per cent of royalty on the sale price of coal and 30 per cent of the royalty as contribution towards the proposed district mineral foundations (DMFs)-- which is meant to support project-affected people---and two per cent of NMET from dry-fuel produced by the coal companies and also the private sector. In case of captive, commercial mines states are also entitled to receive the revenue share offered by the auction holder in a transparent bidding process. Apart from this, state governments also benefit from increased employment, land compensation, increased investment in allied infrastructure like railways, road and several other economic benefits. Coal India's production and off-take are pegged at 838 MT for FY'25. Coal India's contribution to govt exchequer rises 6.4% to ₹60,140 crore in FY24

But dealers had to pick up 18% of the sales, greater than the typical 11% share, as more buyers balked. That followed similarly weak auctions this past week for three-year and 10-year Treasurys.In a note Thursday, strategists at TD Securities raised the question of whether it's a "canary in the coal mine.""While end-user takedowns at auctions have remained high in recent years, the recent drop in end-user demand is concerning as dealer capacity to backstop auctions remains lower due to limited balance sheet availability," they wrote.They added that investor conviction is low while the Treasury Department will likely increase the size of its auctions in the coming months, with more long-dated debt coming to market.TD Securities warned this could put upward pressure on rates, which will weigh on economic growth and eventually lead rates lower by year-end and in 2024."In the near-term, however, worries about a lack of demand for Treasurys could allow rates to re-test recent highs, with 10s potentially making a run at the 5% mark," they said.But market veteran Ed Yardeni told Insider that bond yields could already be at the right levels to bring back demand. He also noted that while the recent auctions didn't go well, bond yields didn't shoot to new highs. In fact, the 30-year rate still remains below its 5% peak, and the 10-year yield is headed towards a 4.6% level."I think 4.5% to 5% is going to create enough demand to meet supply at these levels. If that's the case, then they don't have to continue to increase," he said, but added, "We may be where we're going to be for a while." Yardeni's forecast contrasts with other projections made by leading commentators, with the likes of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/bill-ackman-larry-fink-jamie-dimon-10-year-treasury-yields-2023-9">Bill Ackman, Larry Fink</a>, and <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bond-market-being-held-captive-212642832.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Gross</a> predicting highs above the 5% threshold.But while such outlooks are driven by their concerns over high future inflation, Yardeni said it's moderating.Meanwhile, a potential US debt crisis  — a fear that has helped drive the sharp Treasury sell-off since August — is not an inevitable scenario, Yardeni said, though it is a real concern. In his view, yields are soaring as activist traders, known as bond vigilantes, are trying to push interest rates to levels that will force the US government to tackle its runaway deficits and debt. If left unaddressed, the fiscal situation will reach a breaking point that could send the US <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/us-debt-crisis-gdp-ratio-unsustainable-default-treasury-bond-crash-2023-10">into some form of default</a>, Penn Wharton recently predicted.But for now, bond market yields should level off after weeks of turmoil, Yardeni said. "Our baseline scenario requires that the bond yield is now high enough to equilibrate the supply and demand for Treasury securities without causing a recession," he wrote in a Friday note, adding: "We will be watching the Treasury's bond auctions in coming months, along with everyone else, to see whether the bond yield is stabilizing or needs to go higher to clear the Treasury market's supply."

The Anil Agarwal-led conglomerate won the bid for <keyword id="14967983" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ghogharpalli" source="Orion">Ghogharpalli</keyword> and its <keyword id="14988853" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dip-extension" source="Orion">Dip Extension</keyword> mines. Both the coal mines are fully explored and the total geological reserves are 1,288.28 million tonnes. Peak rate capacity (PRC) for both the mines is 20 million tonnes per annum, official sources said. Vedanta bags 2 Odisha coal mines in e-auction

The Panama Canal auctions more spots to jump the line amid a growing backlog of ships waiting to transit key waterway for commodities

New Delhi, Jan 15 () The government on Wednesday said it is initiating the process of coal auctions and the first round of sale of blocks under commercial mining is proposed to be launched in the ongoing fiscal.
The announcement comes days after the government approved an ordinance to ease mining laws that will allow global players to enter the coal sector.
 A company or a joint venture company incorporated in India is eligible to participate in commercial coal auctions, the coal ministry said in a statement.
"Moving ahead after the recent amendments in MMDR Act 1957 and the CMSP Act 2015, the Ministry of Coal is initiating the process for auction of coal mines for sale of coal. Expected to be held in multiple tranches, the first tranche is proposed to be launched in the current financial year," it said.
 The bidders would be required to bid for a percentage share of revenue payable to the government. The floor price shall be four per cent of the revenue share, the statement added.
 The government has released a list of 74 mines which it plans to auction under commercial mining.
 The ministry said it has urged interested stakeholders to view the discussion paper and the mine specific details and submit their views/suggestions, indicate their preferences for the mines to be considered for auction under the first tranche.
 The ordinance approved by the Cabinet last week also enables auction of unexplored and partially explored coal blocks for mining through prospecting license-cum-mining lease.
 These steps are expected to result in opening up of the coal sector completely for commercial mining to local as well as global firms. This would further boost economic growth and employment generation. SID ANU

Centre begins commercial coal auction process

With no relief in sight despite coal stocks running critically low and production disruptions looming across the Indian aluminium sector, the Aluminium Association of India (<keyword id="47439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aai" source="Orion">AAI</keyword>) has approached the Ministry of Coal, urging the immediate resumption of adequate coal rakes for the highly power-intensive Aluminium industry. In its representation to the Ministry, the AAI has lauded the combined efforts by the Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited in reviving domestic coal production, which has helped ease the coal supply crisis for the Power Sector. The steps undertaken by the Ministry increased the overall daily rakes dispatched from 242 rakes/day in September 2021 to 289 rakes/day in December 2021. This has drastically strengthened the coal stocks of the Power Sector to around 10 days, a marked improvement from a mere 2-3 days in the months of September-October last year. However, this has come at enormous cost to the <keyword id="629340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Captive-Power-Plants" source="Orion">Captive Power Plants</keyword> (CPP)-based industry and the worst impacted is the Indian aluminium industry, which continues to see depleting coal stocks of only 3-4 days, abysmally low compared to the prescribed level of 15 days for the sector. Struggling to cope with this prolonged crisis since the second quarter of this fiscal year, the AAI has now sought the Ministry's support to ensure adequate supplies to the CPPs by earmarking at least 25-30 coal rakes per day to ensure viable industry operations. The need for the CPPs is especially urgent, given that Aluminium production is a continuous process that requires huge volumes of uninterrupted quality power supply. This quantum can only be met only through the in-house CPPs set up by all the aluminium smelters plants to meet this specific requirement. Accordingly, the industry has established Captive Power Plants of 9,400 MW capacity (comprising 34 per cent of the cumulative thermal CPPs capacity domestically) to supply continuous power for Aluminium operations. Even though the Government has reiterated that there is now an improved availability of coal in the country overall, the non-availability of rakes for the non-regulated sectors remains a major concern. Curtailing coal supplies to Captive Power Plants (CPPs) has directly resulted in a coal crunch situation for the Aluminium Sector. Any power interruption in an aluminium smelting operation for more than 2 hours can lead to the freezing of molten aluminium within the smelting pots, which takes a minimum of 6 months to fix, and then almost a year to once again begin yielding the desired metal output, causing enormous production, cost and supply disruptions. With the continued crisis, it will take over a year's time to clear the backlog of rakes, and for the CPPs to build and maintain adequate coal stocks for sustainable operations. The crisis further aggravates with the last-minute cancellation of coal auctions for NRS, giving no relief for the domestic industry to secure coal for manufacturing and CPP-based industries. With the ongoing revival of the economy and increased post-pandemic industrial activity, the CPP-based industries are highly dependent on uninterrupted coal supplies which is vital for sustainable operations and the continued cost-competitiveness of power intensive industries vis-a-vis global players. Any production curtailment by this sector will have cascading effect on consumption and downstream supply chain, thereby adversely impacting the nation's GDP growth. The AAI representation has gone on to highlight that since August 2021, the Non-Regulated Sector has been facing uncertainties in securing sufficient coal rakes for continued operations, with supplies limited to just 40-50 per cent of the required coal. This has led to a backlog of over 6000 coal rakes as most of the available coal and rakes are being diverted to the Power Sector as "Priority Coal Supplies", even despite their coal inventory situation drastically improving. Coal shortage now at alarming levels, say aluminium producers

New Delhi, June 18 () Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the auction process for 41 coal blocks for commercial mining, a move that opens India's coal sector for private players, and termed it a major step in the direction of India achieving self-reliance. Launching the auction of mines for commercial mining, that is expected to garner Rs 33,000 crore of capital investment in the country over next five to seven years, the Prime Minister said India will win the coronavirus war and turn this crisis into an opportunity, and the pandemic will make India self-reliant. The launch of the auction process not only marks the beginning of unlocking of the country's coal sector from the "lockdown of decades", but aims at making India the largest exporter of coal, the Prime Minister said. Presently, despite being the world's fourth largest producer, he said India is the second largest importer of the dry-fuel. "Allowing private sector in commercial coal mining is unlocking resources of a nation with the world's fourth-largest reserves," he pointed out. Major scams had taken place in coal action earlier, but the system has been made "transparent" now, PM said lambasting past policies of keeping the sector closed. The PM said that this auction process will result in major revenues to states and create employment besides developing the far-flung areas. The commencement of auction process of these blocks, part of the series of announcements made under 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan', is likely to contribute Rs 20,000 crore revenues annually to the state governments. In line with the Prime Minister's self-reliance call, the aim behind the auction process is to achieve self-sufficiency in meeting energy needs and boosting industrial development. The government has taken an important decision to open up coal and mining sector to competition, capital and technology, he said. Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi, who was also be present during the launch event, said Rs 50,000 crore is being invested in the sector to jack up India's coal output to 1 billion tonne. With a view to achieve self-reliance in the coal sector, the Ministry of Coal in association with FICCI launched the process of auction of 41 coal mines under the provisions of Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act and Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act. Upon attainment of peak rated capacity of production of 225 million tonnes (MT), the government said, these mines will contribute about 15 per cent of the country's projected total coal production in 2025-26. The German parliament passed a law in 2020 to phase out the use of coal entirely by 2038.Russia has said Gazprom's decision to slash natural gas flows to Germany is the result of Canadian sanctions which have meant key pieces of equipment are stuck in Montreal.But Germany has disputed this argument, pointing out that there are alternative pipelines that could be used.The move has sent natural gas prices soaring and raised the prospect of shortages of the vital energy source during the winter. <keyword id="484749" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jaiprakash-power-ventures-ltd" source="Orion">Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd</keyword> acquired Bandha North coal mine in Madhya Pradesh, while <keyword id="14366646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="avassa-ferro" source="Orion">Avassa Ferro</keyword> Alloys Private Ltd bagged Dahegaon/Makardhokra-IV reserve in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> out of the eight blocks which were put up for e-auction by the government for commercial mining on Tuesday. <keyword id="14979041" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-bharat-minerals-private-ltd" source="Orion">Madhya Bharat Minerals Private Ltd</keyword> got Sursa reserve in Chhattisgarh, while Marki Mangli-IV coal reserve in Maharashtra was pouched by Sobhagya Mercantile Ltd. Jitpur reserve in Jharkhand was acquired by <keyword id="14979040" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="terri-mining-private-ltd" source="Orion">Terri Mining Private Ltd</keyword> while Rampia and Dip side of Rampia in Odisha were won by Jhar Mineral Resource Private Ltd. Basantpur coal block in Jharkhand was bagged by Gangaramchak Mining Private Ltd. Out of these eight blocks, five are full explored while three reserves are partially explored mines. The total geological reserves for these eight coal mines are 2157 million tonnes and the cumulative peak rate capacity for these reserves are 19.31 million tonnes per annum. The Coal Ministry will conduct e-auction of two more reserves on Wednesday.
