There is an ongoing battle across institutes that offer coaching for entrance exams to IITs, especially in Delhi and Kota. The centres are fighting for top faculty members and are ready to pay them as much as Rs 1 crore-plus salary. 
 
The teachers, who have IIT degrees or equivalent, are benefitting from the fight and the number of faculty members getting Rs 1 crore-plus is growing at a fast pace. 
 
"We have six crorepati faculty members," Modali Venkat Hari Kishan, manager, Bansal Classes, a training institute based in Kota, Rajasthan told Economic Times. 
 
Such high is the competition that staffers only stay with centre till they get the best deal. 
 
"Today, there are at least 15-20 people getting one crore-plus salaries in Kota alone. Then, there are other hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur and Patna, where the faculty would be getting even more," Sonal Rajora, a faculty member at Allen Career institute, told the financial daily. 
 
Meanwhile, as per sources, teachers are even earning Rs 2 crore and reportedly, there have also been instances of Rs 3-crore salaries. 
Industry sources told ET that a good faculty could easily earn Rs 1 crore within two to five years. On the flip side, professors in IITs start from Rs 10-11 lakh per annum and deans get Rs 25 lakh per annum. 
 
"We have faculty members with 10+ years of experience who draw Rs 1.5-2 crore salaries," Bansal Classes' Modali Venkat Hari Kishan told ET. 
 
Talking about the salary hikes, RL Trikha, Director, FIITJEE, told the financial daily that the average annual raise in between 10% and 50%. 
 
The coaching centre charge at least Rs 1 lakh as tuition fee from students. More than 10 lakh aspirants registered for the IIT-JEE this year.

New Delhi, May 27 () Super 30 coaching fame Anand Kumar will work with CSC e-governance Services India Ltd to help prepare students in rural areas for IIT-JEE examination for a fee of Re 1, the e-governance firm said on Wednesday. Noted mathematician Kumar will develop a course module online to train students from weak financial backgrounds for the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). "The thrust would be on developing inquisitiveness which is very important for science and mathematics education. With the help of CSC, an IIT- JEE entrance exam module will be prepared which will be made available to students in rural India in just Re 1," Kumar said during his online interaction with rural students through common service centres. CSC e-Governance India Services manages around 3 lakh common service centres across the country that provide government services in rural area and small towns. Kumar said he helps students from economically backward sections preparing for IIT JEE by providing study materials and lodging for a year and his mother prepares food for them. "With the help of CSC, we will prepare online study material for children living in rural areas who cannot afford expensive coaching. It would guide students through innovative teaching modules to develop their interest in Mathematics and Science subjects at an early age," he said. <ul><li>The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the <keyword id="178605" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joint-Entrance-Examination">Joint Entrance Examination</keyword> (JEE) are two of the most competitive exams, not only in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> but globally as well. </li><li>The <keyword id="581232" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) has announced that they will provide free coaching to aspirants starting next year through their test practice centers. </li><li>While the move may empower candidates from rural and semi-urban regions, it may also deal a blow to India’s booming coaching industry.</li></ul>In a new initiative taken up by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India, they will be providing <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/free-govt-coaching-for-jee-neet-from-2019/articleshow/65600522.cms?from=mdr">free coaching for students</a> preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The NTA plans on converting their test practice centers to serve as teaching centers starting 2019. There are around 2,697 test practice centers will be operational starting 1 September. While the JEE ranks second in the world with respect to its toughness, no other examination has been in the news as much as the NEET. In fact, the NEET was discontinued altogether back in 2013 before making a comeback three years later. Even now, the <a href="https://www.dailyo.in/variety/will-jee-neet-twice-a-year-help-students-medical-engineering-cbse-national-testing-agency/story/1/25387.html">decision</a> to conduct the exam twice a year, announced in July, is in flux with reports <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/neet-2019-might-not-be-conducted-twice-a-year-1310614-2018-08-10">suggesting</a> that it might be rolled back all together. Impact on the coaching industry Even with cut-offs being lowered, the exams increase in their level of competitiveness with each year as more and more applicants come forward. And, with more applicants coming on-board, the otherwise unorganised coaching industry is booming. In turn, the financial burden of pursuing <keyword id="3113818" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering-in-India">engineering in India</keyword> is becoming an increasingly big issue for many aspirants as these coaching centres charge a bomb for their classes. A study by ASSOCHAM reveals that 70% of the parents, right from high-income families to the bottom stratum of the social hierarchy, are in the favor of spending hefty sums at these coaching institutes in the name of education. Reports <a href="https://ideasmakemarket.com/2013/09/aug-entry16-analysis-of-private-coaching-industry-in-india.html">indicate</a> that middle-class parents shell-out nearly one-third of their income so that their children can attend these private tuitions. But despite these private tuitions flourishing across the country, the reality of the situation remains unaltered. An exam like the JEE can only be cleared by 5,500 and more than 300,000 students appear for the exam. It’s that extreme level of competition that has led to the coaching industry showing a consistent growth of 35% over the past six years. And, that is exactly why free coaching for students will deal a big blow to the industry. That being said, the notion that private education is superior to public education still prevails in India. There might not be an actual loss for the coaching institution since the coaching centers don't cater to students who can’t afford tuition anyway. According to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the aim is to empower candidates from rural and semi-urban centres. While the NEET is the national level entrance exam to gain admission into any graduate medical course in a government or a private medical college, the JEE is an all-India exam for admission into India’s leading engineering colleges like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Indian government is rolling out free coaching for two of the toughest exams in the world

The entrance tests to the IITs abroad have been held till now only to admit Indian nationals. However, for the first time, it has been planned to admit foreign students through tests held abroad. 
 
Exam centres will soon be set up in six countries including three SAARC nations - Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dubai (UAE), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore. 
 
But, it seems the premier institutes recognised world over for its par excellence education, are going a bit too far in their bid to go global. 
They are offering unfair advantages to foreign candidates. 
 
Foreign students applying from the six countries will be able to directly appear for JEE (advanced) exam if they have secured at least 75 per cent aggregate marks in class 12 (or equivalent) Board Examination. Based on their performance in the exam, the students can select IITs for undergraduate courses. 
 
For Indians, however, to qualify for the admission in the IITs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Advanced)/JEE(Main) ranks, it's compulsory to have scored at least 75% marks in Class 12th examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. Moreover, JEE (Main) is a mandatory eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs. 
 Laying out the application procedure for <keyword id="105019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-nationals">foreign nationals</keyword>, the <keyword id="405083" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Joint-Admission-Board">IIT Joint Admission Board</keyword> said - “They are required to upload the birth certificate, class 12 marksheet and certificate for 75 per cent cut-off, identity proof of the candidate, citizenship certificate and passport of both the parents." For B.Arch programme, successful candidates are required to come to one of the zonal IITs to write the test. 
 
Notably, seats available to foreign nationals would be in addition to the existing seats at IITs and will not result in the reduction of seats available to Indian students. Even though these seats will not exceed 10 per cent of the total seats in each course offered by the IITs, qualifying foreign students direct entry into JEE (Advanced) is going to make their way into IITs way easier than their Indian counterparts.

While the number of coaching institutes catering to the IIT aspirant crowd are mushrooming every season in Hyderabad, this year at least 1.5 lakhs of students have joined the race. 
 
"The fascination among students in Telangana and AP for JEE has only increased over the years. It is only in the last one decade that there has been a sudden rise in the number of takers. The coaching industry has only catered to the increasing demand," Dheeraj Kumar Misra, regional director, operations, south zone at Aakash Educational Services Pvt Ltd told The Times of India. 
 
In the 90s, the number of aspirants was barely 3000, which has now pumped up to 1.5 lakh. Hyderabad has dominated the merit list with almost 50 percent of the top 10 rankers for the past several years. If the results for JEE (advanced) 2016 are anything to go by, then six out of top 10 rankers were from Hyderabad.

R.K. Shishir is the topper among the students whose names are included in the list of top 10 in JEE-Advanced exam. <keyword id="14954873" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="polu-lakshmi-sai" source="Orion">Polu Lakshmi Sai</keyword> came at number two, <keyword id="14954874" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="thomas-biju" source="Orion">Thomas Biju</keyword> at number three, <keyword id="14954872" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vangapalli-sai-siddharth" source="Orion">Vangapalli Sai Siddharth</keyword> at number four and Mayank Motwani of IIT Delhi zone came at number five. <keyword id="14954875" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="polishetty-kartikeya" source="Orion">Polishetty Kartikeya</keyword> is at 6th position, Prateek Sahu is 7th, Dheeraj Kurukunda is 8th in All India Rank, Mahit is at 9th position and Vetcha Gnana Mahesh has secured 10th position. Among the girls, Tanishka Kabra of IIT Delhi Zone bagged the top rank, while in common rank list she is at 16th place. Tanishka secured 277 marks out of 360 in JEE-Advanced exam. 40,712 candidates qualified this year out of a total of 1,55,538 who appeared in both Paper 1 and 2 of JEE-Advanced 2022. Based on the results, the admission process will now begin in 23 IITs across the country. Of the total 40,712 candidates who have qualified the JEE-Advanced exam, 6516 are girl students. In the case of foreign students, 296 foreign girl students had registered themselves for JEE-Advanced examinations. However, only foreign 280 students appeared and a 145 cracked the examination. JEE-Advanced exam was held on August 28. The test for the first paper of JEE-Advanced exam was held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and the second paper was held from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. In order to prevent electronic malpractices in the JEE-Advanced examination, 'jammers' were installed at the centres. JEE-Advanced Results: RK Shishir of IIT Bombay  tops zone

Delhi boy <keyword id="3439623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepanshu-Jindal">Deepanshu Jindal</keyword>, the topper of the prestigious <keyword id="1665948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-JEE-Main">IIT-JEE Main</keyword> this year, says he wants to pursue higher education after graduation from IIT Delhi, and ultimately become an entrepreneur. 
 
"I want to pursue Computer Science Engineering from IIT Delhi. I am quite interested in Research and Development and would want to do entrepreneurship in R&amp;D," says Jindal. 
 
A student of SB Public School in the national capital, this lad took his<a href="http://www.pagalguy.com/articles/jee-main-2016-topper-deepanshu-jindal-chooses-iit-delhi-over-44532308"> IIT Coaching from Narayana IIT Academy</a>. 
 
You may be thinking he must have not taken his eyes of books, but Jindal says that's not been the case with him. He is a keen sports fan who plays cricket and football regularly to take the much-needed break from his hectic schedule. Apart from sports, Jindal also likes social networking and is quite active on Facebook, Google+ and WhatsApp. 
 He has secured 111 in Physics, 110 in Maths and 100 in chemistry in JEE Main, and 98.6% in Class 12 CBSE because of which his rank jumped from 20 to 1 after the normalisation process. Meanwhile, Pratyush Maini from Gurgaon has secured the second position, and <keyword id="1033212" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajesh-Bansal">Rajesh Bansal</keyword> of <keyword id="195874" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanskriti-School">Sanskriti School</keyword> stood third. 
 
The rank List, uploaded at <a href="http://jeemain.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx">http://jeemain.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx</a> shows that boys have dominated the list of toppers. Of the top 1,000 positions, 853 have been secured by boys and 147 by girls. Ryali Gayathri from Telangana has emerged on the top among girls, securing the 11th rank. 
 The <keyword id="3439624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="All-India-Rankings">All India Rankings</keyword> are based on their JEE Main score (60 per cent weightage) and Class 12 scores (40 per cent weightage). Admissions to BE and B Tech courses in engineering institutions like NITs, IIITs are made on the basis of these rankings. 
 
Meanwhile, in another significant move for admission to the IITs - for which scores in IIT (Advanced) exam is the basis, the first list of allocation of seats for IITs will be released on July 1. 
 
Among boards, CBSE students have done well, getting 12 of the top 20 ranks. States boards like Telangana (6 of the top 20 positions), Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra too find students among toppers. 
 Around 11.28 lakh students had appeared for the <keyword id="75235" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-JEE">IIT JEE</keyword> Main exam, officials said, adding, results were announced a week in advance as compared to last year.

IIT-JEE topper says he knows he wants to become an entrepreneur

India, the home of innovative minds, is now bringing <keyword id="1021589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-graduates">IIT graduates</keyword> under one umbrella where they’ll educate needy students, those who want to study in top educational institutes. This is an initiative by <keyword id="39440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="avanti">Avanti</keyword>, a for-profit venture backed by the Michael &amp; <keyword id="867407" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Susan-Dell-Foundation">Susan Dell Foundation</keyword> and the Pearson Affordable Learning Fund. The award-winning social enterprise was established by IIT alumnus in 2010 and is currently having eighty full time teachers with around 300 volunteers and support of over 1,200 high-school students across the country. 
 
Most of the people working at Avanti are IIT graduates and are earning about one-fourth of what they would have got in any multi-national. But, the job satisfaction is more than enough to make-up for that. 
 Avanti president and co-founder, <keyword id="258061" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akshay-Saxena">Akshay Saxena</keyword>, an IIT Bombay alumnus feels that the best part is that they are attracting the India’s best undergraduates for the cause. Saxena said, "All of our recruits have a passion for teaching but what's most exciting for our team is that we're working towards re-imagining education and creating an alternate model that uses technology to deliver quality through process." 
 
A report published in Economic Times says that after turning up into a for-profit organization in 2012, it opened centers in Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Chennai and is still expanding. Besides the IITs, it has also hired graduates from the National Institutes of Technology and St Stephen's in Delhi. 
 
Prachi Windlass, director of education, India, Michael &amp; Susan Dell Foundation says that the biggest attraction, she believes is the draw for high-quality talent; for example IIT alumnus sense Avanti’s social mission, and a performance-based culture for achieving that mission. 
 
Admission into a top engineering college is a life-transforming experience, and who understands that better than young graduates." 
 
What makes Avanti different from other platforms is its coaching model that helped 18 students from Hindi-speaking, low-income backgrounds get into top engineering colleges this year. The two-year program costs these candidates a total of Rs25,000-35,000 for one whole year, one-third of what other coaching institutes charge. Of the 102 Avanti students who wrote the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) this year, 57 went through to the next stage with 18 clearing JEE Advanced.

At an age when most students are clueless about the career they want to pursue, 15-year-old Abhay Agrawal has cracked JEE Advance 2017 - one of India's toughest exam. With 2476 All India Rank, he has even secured a seat in <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>-BHU. Abhay has secured admission in mechanical engineering, but has not yet confirmed his seat and instead opted to `float' the given choice of institute as he wants to study at IIT Roorkee. He jumped initial classes and completed Class 12 before his contemporaries at school. "My parents got me enrolled at a coaching class in the city. Some people discouraged me but that motivated me to study harder," said Abhay. Unlike his classmates, he stayed away from social media and other distractions while preparing for the competition. He comes from a modest family. His father Mukesh works as a pump attendant at Firozabad Nagar Nigam, and his mother, Ekta, is a Class 12 passout. His father said, "Abhay has brought us laurels at an early age. When the chief medical officer in Firozabad had to prepare his medical certificate, he was surprised. At IIT Kanpur also, JEE staff was amazed to know he was this young. He is a talented boy with high capabilities. He would finish BTech also in the stipulated time." Meanwhile, on his feat, a JEE staffer said, "He could be the youngest candidate this year to join an IIT. His class 10 mark sheet confirms that he is fifteen and a half year old. He was born on November 9, 2001.” In class 12 exams Abhay had scored 87.2 percent from CBSE Board and scored 85.63 percent in class 10 from UP Board. Unlike his classmates, he stayed away from social media and other distractions while preparing for the competition. He aspires to own a startup that will deal in products related to robotics.

A recent study by IIT-K's campus newspaper - Vox Populi - revealed that 50% of its students who had studied at Kota coaching institutes feel worn out by the <keyword id="23666" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="stress">stress</keyword> they faced during their preparation days. 
 The study titled '<keyword id="3860925" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kota-Juggernaut-Survey">Kota Juggernaut Survey</keyword>' cited 59% respondents saying that they felt stress levels are higher in Kota than at IIT-K. 
 
Nearly 75% respondents, however, said Kota faculty is better at teaching than the IIT-K professors. A whopping 94% students said they feel that Kota's coaching institute teachers are also far better than their school teachers. 
 
Notably, the survey received responses from 212 candidates enrolled in undergraduate programmes, all of whom had studied at Kota before joining IIT. 
 
The study on Kota's educational culture further noted that the poor quality of education in Indian schools was the reason behind students leaving their homes and joining coaching institutions in Kota. Almost 23% went to Kota after listening to success stories of people they know. As many as 66% respondents joined Kota's coaching institutes in class 11. 
 
As for suicides, the survey cited parental pressure as a major reason owing to an overwhelming response by 66.5% of its respondents. Stress, poor performance, loneliness and substance abuse were cited as other reasons for suicides in Kota. 
 
Another shocking outcome of the study was 80% respondents said their stay in Kota affected their creative side. They said they felt they came out perfectly tuned for JEE, but ill-equipped with life skills.

The new board will have separate grades for all subjects, focussing on the career interest of the student. "You have four grades for subjects. For instance, divide science into four grades — science for doctors and engineers, science for sportsperson, science for humanities. If a child wants to become a journalist, he can take A grade language and maybe C grade of science so that if he has to cover science, he is well-versed with the basics," Sisodia explained. The move aims to provide a blended learning experience to students. As of now, the school curriculum helps them with only 10% of entrance examination syllabus, making them go for extra coaching classes. This comes on the back of massive opposition in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cbse-exam-registration-fee-hike-rolled-back/articleshow/70669606.cms">examination fee hikes</a> rolled out by CBSE. The board increased the exam registration fee for SC and ST students by 24 times, making it ₹1,200 from the existing ₹50. It also doubled the exam fee for class 10th and 12th students of general category to ₹1,500, which was ₹750. However, it rolled back the fee to ₹50 for the Scheduled Caste(SC)/ Scheduled Tribes (ST) students studying at government schools.
