In a major step toward protecting students and their families, the Indian government has issued new guidelines aimed at curbing misleading advertisements by coaching centres. The Centre's crackdown addresses exaggerated claims like “100% selection” or “guaranteed job security” — promises that often lead to disappointment among students who invest time and money expecting a near-certain outcome.<br /><h2>Protecting consumers, not shutting down coaching</h2>On Wednesday, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) rolled out these guidelines in response to numerous complaints from the National Consumer Helpline. According to <keyword id="20003684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-affairs" source="keywords">Consumer Affairs</keyword> Secretary Nidhi Khare, the government’s goal is not to shut down coaching centres but to ensure their ads don’t “undermine consumer rights.”<br /><br />“We have seen coaching centres deliberately concealing information from prospective students,” Khare said. “Therefore, we have come out with the guidelines to provide guidance to people involved in the coaching industry.”<br /><br />So far, the CCPA has issued 54 notices to violators and imposed penalties of around Rs 54.60 lakh.<br /><h2>What’s prohibited?</h2>The guidelines lay out strict boundaries on what coaching centres can — and cannot — say in their ads. Here’s what the guidelines address:<br /><ul><li>False Claims: Ads should not make unsubstantiated promises about “100% selection” or “100% job security.”</li><li>Course Details: No exaggerating or omitting information about courses, their duration, or outcomes.</li><li>Faculty Credentials: Qualifications of teachers must be presented accurately, with no fake credentials.</li><li>Fees and Refunds: All fees and refund policies must be transparent.</li><li>Selection Rates and Ranks: Coaching centres cannot claim high selection rates or exam rankings without proof.</li></ul>Additionally, they are not allowed to use successful candidates’ names, photos, or testimonials in ads without written consent from these individuals.<br /><br />Khare advised students to double-check the information provided by coaching centres. “Many UPSC students clear prelims and mains on their own and take only interview guidance from coaching centres,” she explained, encouraging students to verify the course details actually taken by successful candidates.<br /><br />The guidelines go beyond the broad term “coaching.” They define coaching as academic support, education, guidance, study programs, and tuition — but they exclude counselling, sports, and creative activities. The purpose of this definition is to keep the focus on academic and career-oriented programs, which are most prone to misleading ads.<br /><h2>Full disclosure and consequences for violators</h2>Transparency is now mandatory, as coaching centres must display disclaimers and reveal essential course details. Facilities, infrastructure, and resources must be represented accurately, along with any required approvals or recognitions from authorities like AICTE or UGC.<br /><br />Khare, who also serves as the CCPA chief, stressed that coaching centres should accurately present the service, resources, and infrastructure provided. For instance, if they advertise “fully-equipped classrooms,” the guidelines require this to be an honest description.<br /><br />These guidelines come as a supplement to existing laws and are enforceable under the Consumer Protection Act. This means violators will face penalties, potentially similar to the Rs 54.60 lakh already imposed by the CCPA.<br /><br />The government hopes these new standards will push coaching centres to keep their ads honest, helping students and families make better-informed decisions.<br /><br /><em>(With inputs from agencies)</em><br />

Harry Kane physically rugby-tackled to the ground.</p><p>The England-Colombia World Cup match was at times an ugly game, with Colombia slapped with six yellow cards to England's two. But in the end, it didn't matter.</p><p>England prevailed in penalties after a 1-1 draw, with a win that is sure to inflame British passions about a national team that has already been hailed as one of the best in decades.</p><p>England started strongly, landing a series of penalties in the early minutes of the game, and giving Gareth Southgate's team the chance to execute a series of the setpieces that the new coach has become known for - but couldn't quite convert them. Colombia built up as the first half drew on, but both teams ultimately went into half-time with the scoreline at nil-nil.</p><p>In the second half, Colombia's fouls ratcheted up - but backfired, when a blatant tackle that forced Harry Kane to the ground yards from Colombia's goal prompted a penalty kick that he booted squarely into the centre of the net.</p><p>Around the 80th minute, Colombia got a break but squandered it, with Bacca booting it high. The South American team got a rare shot on goal in minute 86, but Falcao slid slowly along the ground, with English keeper Pickland stopping it easily.</p><p>Then, in the 93rd minute, in a header that electrified the crowd, Colombia's Mina headed it into the English goal from a penalty, and ushered in extra time. England beats Colombia in penalties after dirty, foul-filled game

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>USA defeated Canada after a dramatic penalty shootout in the 2018 Winter Olympics women's ice hockey final on Thursday.</strong></li><li><strong>Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson practiced a routine for four years and executed it perfectly to score the match-winning penalty.</strong></li><li><strong>The move even has a name - the "Oops, I did it again."</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>American ice hockey forward Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson etched her name into Winter Olympics history on Thursday.</p><p>In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/united-states-gold-over-canada-shootout-womens-hockey-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a gripping women's ice hockey final at the Gangneung Hockey Centre in South Korea</a>, it was Lamoureux's match-winning penalty that saw USA score a sudden death victory over North American rival Canada.</p><p>Lamoureux dropped her shoulder, feinted to the left, and gracefully manoeuvred the puck around Canadian goalkeeper Shannon Szabados, before flicking a shot over the line from close range.</p><p>The move even has a name. "It's called 'Oops, I did it again,'" Lamoureux said, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-olympics/42981159" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the BBC</a>.</p><p><strong>Here is the move in all its glory:</strong></p><p>"I've done that thousands of times around tyres just set out on open ice," a "thrilled" Lamoureux said.</p><p>However, it has taken years of practice to get it right.</p><p>"I've butchered it a thousand times, ran into tyres, tripped over tyres just working on my hands," she added. "I'm just glad it worked out this time."</p><p>The match was tied at 2-2 when the penalty shoot-out was called, meaning whichever team won via sudden death would win gold.</p><p>Both USA and Canada had scored five penalties each by the time it was Lamoureux's turn, and her goal came moments before an unsuccessful Canadian penalty. It said workers could use the toilet whenever they needed, and that they were not monitored.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Working in an Amazon warehouse is like prison, according to an author who went undercover at a fulfilment centre and found staff were peeing in bottles because they had no time to go to the toilet.</p><p>James Bloodworth investigated casual work and its impact on people's lives for his book "Hired: Six Months in Low-Wage Britain." For research, he took low-paid jobs at an Amazon warehouse, in social care, a call centre, a building site, and as an Uber driver to explore how people coped.</p><p>Bloodworth spent just under a month in 2016 working as a "picker" at an Amazon fulfilment centre in Rugeley, in central England. This involved running around the centre picking up items that people have ordered for delivery.</p><p>Bloodworth said he was employed through Transline, an employment agency <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/mar/13/transline-employment-agency-amazon-sports-direct-temporary-warehouse-workers">which Amazon no longer uses after it sent 1,500 people to work in poor conditions at the warehouse of major British retailer Sports Direct</a>.</p><p>Amazon staff had to meet productivity targets which, according to Bloodworth, were only feasible if you ran around the warehouse - something Amazon didn't allow for health and safety reasons.</p><p>He told Business Insider: "The job itself is really bad. I've worked in warehouses before but this was nothing like I had experienced. You don't have proper breaks - by the time you get to the canteen, you only have 15 or 20 minutes for lunch, in a 10-and-a-half hour working day. You don't have time to eat properly to get a drink.</p><p>"You have to go through security when you leave the warehouse, and that adds five minutes. It's like an airport - belt off, watch off. The atmosphere is what I imagine a prison feels like. You felt like you were walking on eggshells."</p><h2>James Bloodworth came across a bottle of urine</h2><p>Bloodworth's claims that Amazon workers were so rushed that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-workers-have-to-pee-into-bottles-2018-4">they had to pee in bottles</a> caused outrage on social media sites <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/8cmbab/amazon_warehouse_workers_pee_into_bottles_because/">such as Twitter and Reddit on Monday</a>.</p><p>To recap, Bloodworth told The Sun that the productivity targets were so high that warehouse workers were scared to take a break and go to the toilet, in case of punishment. "If you're on the top floor, you know it will take five minutes to go the toilet, and all the time you're being admonished for taking too much idle time."</p><p>He also said he had discovered the problem when he came across a bottle of urine while looking for items on an upper floor of the warehouse.</p><p>"One day I'm walking down the aisle and I go to pick up an item. And there's a bottle of straw-coloured water on the shelf and at first I thought 'Oh, what's that?'" he said. "And then it was very obvious what it was. And there was a pool of water next to it. It struck me - it was so obvious why someone would do that."</p><p>Amazon said it doesn't time warehouse workers' toilet breaks and that it ensures people can reach the bathrooms easily.</p><h2>Bloodworth said he was penalised for taking a sick day</h2><p>Bloodworth also outlined Amazon's penalty points system. Racking up six points for issues like unexplained absences could lead to a disciplinary process and dismissal, he said. <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/amazon-workers-face-sack-for-sick-leave-and-missing-targets-mdvlw9qfh">An investigation by The Times</a> at the end of 2016 similarly found that workers were penalised for taking sick days.</p><p>Legitimate sick days theoretically should not be penalised, but Bloodworth said he received a point after telling his manager that he needed a sick day. That's despite giving more than the required one hour's notice, and being able to provide a sick note.</p><p>"It's the sheer oppressiveness of management regime there," he said. "It's the most oppressive place I had ever worked, easily."</p><p>In a lengthy statement to Business Insider, Amazon said it didn't recognise Bloodworth's allegations as representative of the working environment at its warehouses.</p><p>The company also said it no longer has a "points-based attendance policy," and that it coaches people who aren't hitting their productivity targets fast enough.</p><p><strong>Here's the full statement from Amazon:</strong></p><p style="font-weight: 400; padding-left: 30px;">Amazon provides a safe and positive workplace for thousands of people across the UK with competitive pay and benefits from day one. All permanent Amazon fulfilment centre employees are given stock grants, which over the last five years were on average equal to £1,000 or more per year per person.
