Citizens face issues in availability of slots and major technical glitches on the Co-WIN app as India kicks off its largest vaccination drive ever

Vaccine maker <keyword id="2107248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biological-E-Ltd" source="Orion">Biological E. Ltd</keyword> (BE) on Monday announced that it has reduced the price of its <keyword id="8904563" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19-vaccine" source="Orion">Covid-19 vaccine</keyword> <keyword id="11370342" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="corbevax" source="Orion">corbevax</keyword>, from Rs 840 to Rs 250 a dose inclusive of <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST" source="Orion">GST</keyword>, for private Covid-19 vaccination centres. For the end user,the price would be Rs 400 a dose, including taxes and administration charges. The Hyderabad-based company said it has lowered the price of its vaccine with the aim of making it more affordable and help increase the reach to protect the maximum number of children against the virus. The decision comes within weeks of Biological E. receiving Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) for children between 5 and 12 years of age. The previous private market price for the vaccine was Rs 990 per dose, including taxes and vaccine administration charges. Corbrvax is also offered in a single-dose vial, making it more convenient for vaccine administration. It eliminates vaccine wastage, which is a major advantage for private hospitals. The Corbevax vaccination slot can be booked through the Co-WIN app or the Co-WIN portal for children aged 12 to 17. So far, 43.9 million doses of Corbevax have been administered to children across the country and Biological E. has supplied close to 100 million doses to the government. Biological E., in collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, has developed a recombinant protein sub-unit vaccine for the novel coronavirus, Corbevax. Prior to receiving EUA for vaccination, the company conducted Phase 2 and 3 multicentre clinical trials in 624 children aged 5-12 and 12-18.

The eligible beneficiaries will be able to register simply on the portal using their mobile number following a step by step process. What to do after registering on the CO-WIN app? Once the registration is completed, the application will show the government and private hospitals serving as COVID Vaccination Centres (CVC) with the available schedules. You would be given an option to choose the CVC of choice and book an appointment for vaccination. The vaccination will be free at the government facilities and paid at private facilities. The government has capped the price at private hospitals at ₹250 per shot for the vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine recipients may not be able to pick and choose among the two vaccines available in India — Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield, which is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII). A person can register up to four beneficiaries with a single mobile number. However, you would be required to carry identity proofs for all beneficiaries separately. What documents will be required to register on the CO-WIN app? The new cases have been identified at the <keyword id="6375751" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology">National Institute of Virology</keyword> (NIV) Pune. "The total number of cases infected with the new strain of the novel coronavirus first reported in the UK now stands at 58," the <keyword id="83655" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-health-ministry">Union Health Ministry</keyword> said. All these persons have been kept in single room isolation in designated <keyword id="6378833" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-care">Health Care</keyword> facilities by respective state governments. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on, the ministry said. The situation is under careful watch and regular advice is being provided to the States for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing and dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs. Of the 58, the mutated UK strain was detected in eight samples at National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), New Delhi, 11 in the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi, in one in <keyword id="175572" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Institute">National Institute</keyword> of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani (near Kolkata), 25 in the National Institute of Virology in Pune, three in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad and ten was sequenced in National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences Hospital (NIMHANS)Bengaluru. The INSACOG labs at NCBS InSTEM, Bengaluru, CDFD Hyderabad, ILS Bhubaneswar, and NCCS Pune have so far found no mutant virus. The new UK variant has already been reported by several countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon and Singapore. The Government of India took cognizance of the reports of virus reported from the UK and put in place a proactive and preventive strategy to detect and contain the mutant variant, it said. This strategy includes temporary suspension of all flights coming from the UK with effect from the midnight of December 23 till January 7 and mandatory testing of all UK-returned air passengers through <keyword id="9043621" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RT-PCR">RT-PCR</keyword> test. The samples of all UK returnees found positive in RT-PCR test will be genome sequenced by a consortium of 10 government labs i.e. INSACOG. Further, all the international passengers who have arrived in India between December 9 and 22, if symptomatic and tested positive for COVID-19 will be subjected to genome sequencing as part of the Centre's strategy to detect the mutated UK variant in them. Others will be followed up by the respective state and district surveillance officers and will be tested as per the ICMR guidelines (even if asymptomatic) between 5th and 10th day, according to the Union Health Ministry's guidance document on genomic sequencing. Further, epidemiological surveillance of the passengers, who have arrived in India since November 23 will be conducted in the community through active follow up. Besides, standard operating protocol for states and UTs to tackle the mutant variant of SARS-CoV-2 was issued on December 22.
