10-min deliveries can exist only for pre-cooked meals says a new report

<ul><li>Indians have taken the humble samosa and paratha global.</li><li>Indian snack company Bikano made ₹100 crore through exports last year and is confident about seeing a growth of over 25% this fiscal, on the back of its popular <keyword id="1798207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aloo-bhujia" source="Orion">aloo bhujia</keyword>, <keyword id="447352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parathas" source="Orion">parathas</keyword>, gulab jamun and <keyword id="6757559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samosas" source="Orion">samosas</keyword>.</li><li>For iD <keyword id="132468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fresh-food" source="Orion">Fresh Food</keyword>, its international market already contributes over 30% to its annual revenue and its founder Musthafa believes there’s still a huge demand unmet offshore.</li></ul>There’s a growing appetite for <keyword id="553131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-snacks" source="Orion">Indian snacks</keyword> and food across borders. India’s favourite tea-time snacks such as samosas, aloo bhujia and popular breakfast parathas have made their way to distant shores. The market for these snacks is beyond Indians living abroad. For Indian snacks company Bikano, its international sales contribute about 8% of its total sales. The company is confident that demand for its frozen food and snacks would take up a bigger chunk of its turnover. “Our best-selling markets for Indian snacks and frozen foods outside of India are the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the European nations, Hong Kong, Dubai, Qatar, Singapore, and Malaysia. In our last financial year, we made ₹100 crore through our exports alone and in the current fiscal, we are expecting a growth of over 25%,” Dawinder Pal, head of marketing at Bikano told Business Insider India. Bikano tested the international waters by targeting the Indian diaspora and soon enough, foreigners also started growing fond of its Aloo bhujia, samosas and parathas. “We have come to notice a change in consumer patterns – for a while now people of diverse origins are showing keen interest in purchasing and consuming Indian products. There is a lot of traction for our products in the Asian community. At present, our key consumers in the international market come from across the board, both of Indian and non-Indian origins,” shared Pal. According to Pal, aloo bhujia, bikaneri bhujia, lajawab mixture, tasty khatta meetha, frozen samosa, tandoori naan and paratha are some of Bikano’s best-selling products abroad. As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1842221">India’s export </a>of miscellaneous processed items such as Indian snacks, sauces, starch products, vegetable flours among others witnessed a growth of 36.4% in April-June 2022-23 than the previous quarter in the last fiscal. The share of the food processing industry in India’s total agricultural exports continues to swell up, which is driven by frozen food and snacks. On the back of this demand, Indians have taken the humble samosas and parathas global and the world’s palate will never be the same.

Entrepreneur and startup investor Ashneer Grover too joined in the conversation — insisting that 10-minute quick commerce delivery has no economics. Indians take to quick commerce According to Redseer, Indian consumers are taking to quick commerce, and the adoption is much better than in other countries. India has a quick commerce penetration of 13% versus 7% in China and 3% in EU, respectively. The current market size of quick commerce in India is $5.5 billion – and as of now caters to only 1% of the total domestic grocery market. Redseer also says that the total addressable market (TAM) of quick commerce is at $45 billion. “Emerging as one of the fastest growing e-commerce models, quick commerce is fundamentally changing consumer purchase behaviour and the grocery retail market on the whole by providing faster delivery options (in as little as ten minutes) as well as a more convenience-driven shopping experience,” said the Redseer report. Quick commerce players who have set up dark stores that aid quick deliveries, cater to the mid to upper middle-class consumers, and also offer an eclectic mix of products —- in order to stay ahead of the competition from local kiranas. As of now however, around 70% of all quick commerce purchases are top-up orders. Many platforms have informed that milk, eggs and more are the most searched and purchased items for fast deliveries. Stockup purchases like staples and packaged foods are either purchased offline or through online e-commerce. Apart from the time and the economics, the war of words around e-commerce is about average order value (AOV). Many players are trying to push for it by offering free delivery for larger sized orders. A few services like Instamart charge different delivery prices for faster delivery of services. Moreover, the funding winter which has been taking the wind off the sails for most startups has also had its effect on quick commerce players. Moreover, grocery delivery – fast or otherwise – itself is becoming a tougher business to be in. JioMart Express, which offers 90-minute deliveries, has recently shut this service. At the same time last year, fast delivery service Ola Dash folded up. This, however, can be a blessing in disguise, say analysts. “Competitive intensity has slowed down in quick commerce, which gives incumbents room to build scale moats; and the expectation that the life cycle value of the incremental transacting user in quick commerce could be significantly better than in food delivery at the current stage,” says a recent report by JM Financial. When the dust settles on the war of words around quick commerce, it will be incumbent on the existing players to prove their detractors wrong by delivering profitable businesses. I spoke with Nazima Qureshi, a registered dietitian and the co-founder of <a href="https://thehealthymuslims.com/about/">The Healthy Muslims</a>, and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reeniekarim/?hl=en">Mehreen Karim</a>, a chef and editor at Bon Appétit, on ways to make South Asian food more nutritious while staying true to the traditional flavor.Here are five dietitian- and chef-approved ways to balance out your plate of South Asian food while keeping it tasty:<h2>1. For carb-heavy dishes, add extra veggies and protein</h2>One of the biggest trends in South Asian meals can be their reliance on refined and whole grain carbohydrates that come from rice and breads. Qureshi said decrease your rice consumption to about a cup while filling half the plate with both fresh and cooked vegetables. <h2>2. To keep the meal cohesive, Karim recommends marinating your vegetables in yogurt, lemon, and traditional spices. "Any type of yogurt marinade, I'm realizing, works on more than just poultry and fish," she said. You can even blend together ground cardamom, coriander seeds, black pepper, and other whole spices and use the mix as a crust on butternut squash for added texture, Karim said.<h2>3. Try air frying and roasting over deep-frying for crispiness </h2>Karim said when people are looking for a "healthy" dish but don't want to sacrifice flavor and delight, they are often searching for a "satisfying texture."Fried foods taste good no matter what is being fried in part due to their crispiness, she said. Instead of deep frying, Karim said to achieve crispiness by air frying, roasting, or broiling.<div type="image" title="Tandoori broccoli as it comes out of the oven" height="768" width="1024" msid="92937822" hostid="261" sizebytes="192440"></div>"Any dish that has a frying element to it, it's been helpful to use an air fryer instead or to roast it in a particular where it gets marinated in the same flavors but gets stuck in the oven instead of sizzling in oil."I marinated broccoli in yogurt, lemon, and spices and broiled it for a few minutes to achieve a caramelized and slightly charred exterior. <h2>4. Using their advice, I opted for a chola chaat (chickpea street food)-inspired salad for add extra protein and veggies on my plate. Limit oil to a teaspoon or find spray bottles to evenly distribute it on the pan. Karim recommended adding blended cottage cheese or pureed avocado in a creamy or buttery dish to add nutrients.And keep deep fried foods like samosas (vegetable or meat-filled dumplings) and pakoras (fried veggies) as occasional treats rather than everyday staples, Qureshi said.<h2>Non-Western foods are healthy, too</h2><div type="image" title="Plate of balanced South Asian meal" height="768" width="1024" msid="92937827" hostid="261" sizebytes="90270"></div>Karim and Qureshi's advice did the trick — I kept the Pakistani flavors in my dinner, but successfully balanced out carbs and fat by increasing vegetables. I felt full for the rest of the night and couldn't wait to wake up the next day to eat leftovers. You don't need to sacrifice cultural foods to eat a balanced diet, Qureshi said. Small changes made overtime can lead to long-lasting health benefits. "You don't have to turn everything upside down in order to be healthy," she said.
