Google just acquired a company that can turn old PCs into Chromebooks

It erases the original operating system and turns the computer into a makeshift <keyword id="12020918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chromebook" source="Orion">Chromebook</keyword>. But Chrome OS Flex also cuts down on what little fluff the standard version has, making it a streamlined OS that's perfect to use on older systems.</p><p>Flex's light load means that you don't need powerful hardware to run it. And since it doesn't take a lot of processing power or energy, it won't put much strain on your system. These two facts are what let Chrome OS Flex run on such old computers, extending their lifespans for up to years.</p><h3><strong>The risks of installing Chrome OS Flex</strong></h3><p><a href="https://support.google.com/chromeosflex/answer/11513094" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google maintains a "Certified models" list</a>, where they track which computers Flex is guaranteed to work on. If you check it, you'll notice that very few computers actually meet that standard.</p><p>Chrome OS Flex is currently in the "early access" phase, meaning that Google is still building it. As time goes on, Flex will work on more and more computers. But right now, expect some minor glitches and bugs when installing it. And if your computer doesn't show up on that list, you might not be able to install Flex at all.</p><p>Additionally, when you install Chrome OS Flex, it'll erase your computer's operating system and all the files on it. This means that if you've been having software issues, Flex will refresh your system and bring it back up to speed. This step will take a few minutes, but when it's done, your USB drive will become an installer key that you can use to install Chrome OS Flex.</p><p><strong>6.</strong> Once you reach the <strong>Success</strong> page, remove your USB drive.</p><p>Now it's time to install Flex. Go grab the computer that you want to install it on and plug in your USB drive.</p><p><strong>7.</strong> Turn on your computer while holding down the boot key to put it into boot mode. New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) To help develop the next generation of Cloud professionals, seven higher education institutions in India will adopt Cloud computing curricula from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Educate global initiative into their mainstream college syllabus, the Cloud arm of ecommerce giant Amazon said on Friday.<br /><br />The Cloud computing content will be offered as part of undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma programmes starting in September this year.<br /><br />Cloud computing is a top workforce skill sought by companies, as reported by a LinkedIn study conducted annually over the last five years.<br /><br />This new effort is aimed at providing students with knowledge and competency-based credentials in skills such as Cloud architecture, data analytics, cybersecurity, Machine Learning, and software development.<br /><br />"Building a cloud-ready workforce is key to enabling technology-led growth in India that will drive innovation at speed and create impact at scale," Rahul Sharma, President, India and South Asia Public Sector, Amazon Internet Services Private Limited, said in a statement.<br /><br />"Integrating cloud curricula as part of mainstream college education represents a shift in the way the industry and academia can come together to build the next-generation of highly-skilled Cloud professionals."<br /><br />The education institutions offering the newly-designed Bachelor of Technology degree programs in Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science are -- Chitkara University, Punjab; Galgotias University, Uttar Pradesh; Manav Rachna University, Delhi and NCR; Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology, Uttar Pradesh; Sharda University, Delhi and NCR; and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu.<br /><br />The ASM Institute of Management and Computer Studies in Maharashtra will offer syllabus combined with the AWS Educate Cloud curricula for its Post Graduate Diploma in Management -- Emerging Technology.<br /><br />All students participating in the degree and diploma programmes will be enrolled in AWS Educate, Amazon's global initiative to provide students comprehensive resources for building skills in the Cloud, and provided with AWS Promotional Credits to gain real-world, hands-on experience using AWS Cloud technology.<br /><br />Supporting this effort is IT industry body Nasscom which will facilitate greater industry participation by engaging key employers in information technology (IT) and information technology enabled services (ITES) segments in India, to build a talent pipeline equipped with cloud skills.<br /><br />ICT Academy, a not-for-profit society that collaborates with state governments and industry to train higher education teachers and industry-ready students, will also assist the education institutions with faculty development and curriculum alignment, AWS said.<br /><br />--IANS<br /><br />gb/na

How to print directly from Google Docs, and how to check if your printer is Google Cloud-enabled

<br /> Telecom giant <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has entered into an agreement with Nokia Networks to expand its <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> presence in six new circles. Under the agreement, Nokia will be responsible for expansion of Airtel’s 4G presence using the former’s radio network.<br />
	<br />
	With the deal signed, users can expect to witness super-fast mobile broadband services in the six circles. It should be noted that Nokia is already a supplier of TD-LTE network to Airtel, and will also deploy TD-LTE on the 2300MHz in 2 other circles.<br />
	<br />
	“With our commitment to build an efficient Internet eco-system in India, we continue to introduce new technologies and strengthen our existing capabilities. Having already launched the high-speed 4G services across four circles of India, we are now looking at extending this enriching high-speed broadband experience to new circles on 1800MHz band. Our association with Nokia Networks will help us support our vision and provide a superior 4G network,” said Abhay Savargaonkar, chief technology officer of Bharti Airtel.<br />

	Commenting on the pact, Sandeep Girotra, Vice President and Head of India Region, Nokia Networks, noted, “We are happy to expand our TD-LTE footprint with Bharti and partner with them to deploy India’s first FDD-LTE in six new circles. Our rich experience gained in deploying FDD-LTE and TD-LTE to operators around the globe will ensure a fast and smooth network rollout. On top of that, our Flexi Zone solution will ensure the best possible LTE performance even in dense areas.”<br />

	Under the deal, Airtel will get cloud-ready network management system, Net Act, for effective and consolidated monitoring and optimization of the LTE network as well as services such as network planning and optimization, network implementation.

Bharti Enters Into Agreement With Nokia To
Expand 4G Presence Across Six Circles<b></b>

Considering that the concept of ‘zero’ actually came from India, you would think that data, basically a huge combination of numbers, will be of great importance in this country. Well, in many ways, it is true.<br />
 <br />
There are more than a billion people in this country whose records are stored in public archives. There are academic records, stored in the archives of schools, colleges and universities. Moreover, the blooming healthcare industry in India also collects and stores new data every single second. But what’s unique about the data situation in India is that, till the 90s, most of it was stored in hard copies – paperwork that could fill up football stadiums.<br />
 <br />
Wholescale data digitisation is a relatively new thing in India and the process only got accelerated when the IT and ITeS industries came up in the country in the mid-90s. But being a late entrant to the digital revolution did have its drawbacks – data security suffered as most of the infrastructure was directed towards the hard-to-soft conversion.<br />
 <br />
<strong>The need for data security</strong><br /> Only last week, the US accused China of backing hackers who allegedly stole crucial information that could hamper America’s trade prospects. On the other hand, the <keyword id="38879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSA">NSA</keyword> in America has been accused of similar crimes when they admittedly intercepted personal messages from China Telecom to learn more about the Chinese military.<br />
 <br />
In the diplomatic arena, it is also alleged that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office line had been wiretapped by the NSA. Closer home, Chinese hackers have intercepted personal computers and e-mail messages of an Indian professor who is known to have pro-Tibet sentiments. So clearly, international spying is a legitimate threat. Therefore, it is high time that India should hugely invest in data security. Being a developing nation, cost is an issue, though. And that is exactly why Cloud-based computing might be one way to go about it.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Getting a slice of the Cloud pie</strong><br /> On a global scale, the market for <keyword id="6373689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cloud-computing">Cloud computing</keyword> is moving only in one direction, and that is up. From a sheer valuation point of view, it is estimated that the Cloud computing market will leap from $148 billion in 2014 to $207 billion within a span of two years. But the Cloud service space does not exist like a lone island; it is like a chain reaction. Businesses that embrace the Cloud also benefit from it monetarily.<br />
 <br />
According to <em>Disruptive Technologies: Advances that will transform life, business and the global economy</em>, a report from McKinsey &amp; Company, Cloud-based services will have an enormous economic impact. The estimates are between $1.7 trillion and $6.2 trillion annually by 2025. Yes, that is right – we are talking about trillions, not billions. With such huge business flourishing globally, it will be quite tragic if India, with all its digital brains and trained workforce, could not tap that market. However, to make such services affordable for businesses and individuals using Cloud-based devices, major Indian IT companies must team up with the public sector and try to build something like ‘India Cloud.’<br />
 <br />
Seeing how American Cloud-based servers own 80% of the worldwide distribution and how that is one country where privacy can be too easily compromised by government interference, the European Union is trying to establish an EU-specific Cloud. India, with all its resources, needs to go travel that same path.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Is India Cloud-ready?</strong><br />
Now <em>that </em>is the million-dollar question, isn’t it? In India, Microsoft Office 365 is available for a price of Rs 330 per month or Rs 3,299 per year. According to reports available from Microsoft, its goal for India is to have at least 25 million users for Cloud services. And with the growing love affair of Indians with their smartphones and tablets, such a goal is not at all unreachable. But is India ready for such an overwhelming change?<br />
 <br />
The Asia Cloud Computing Association came up with a Cloud Readiness Index for 14 nations across the continent this year and the previous one. While Japan topped the list both times, India came in 9th last year but slipped to 13th in 2014. The areas where India scored the lowest points are international connectivity and data centre risk. IPR protection in India also needs a serious overhaul. When the report came out earlier this year, it stated that India did not have a pro-ICT (Information and Communication Technology) business environment. But now that the country has a new leadership, one that is said to be business friendly, things may turn for the better.<br />
 <br />
Cloud computing is big and it is here to stay. Also, India has extremely skilled resources serving the IT and the ITeS segments. If even a fraction of that talent pool can be diverted towards training in Cloud-based services over the next 2-3 years, in a pro-ICT environment, nothing can stop India from being Cloud-ready. But the entire process has to be kick-started now.<br />

The
Cloud Is Calling, But Is India Ready?<b></b>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>One of the first things that VMware cofounder Diane Greene did after she took the reins as Google Cloud boss in late 2015 was to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-diane-greene-transformed-googles-cloud-2016-6">establish the "Office of the CTO,"</a> a unit that would work directly with the largest customers. </p><p>The idea, explains Google's Greg DeMichillie, Director of Product Management with the Office of the CTO, is to meet the need of<span> "this flood of tier-one, top-level executives" from big companies who were excited by Greene's stellar reputation in the industry, but had only a vague sense of what the cloud was or why they should want it. </span></p><p><span>While Greene has shown <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-boss-diane-greene-sada-systems-2016-3">some willingness to sit in on customer meetings</a>, she can't possibly sit down with every customer and walk them through the basics of the cloud. And while Google has many engineers on staff who could do just that, they tend to focus more on the technical details that can fly over executives' heads.</span></p><p><span>Still, DeMichillie says, those customers would come to Google and say "Hey, spend some time with us, give us some advice." </span><span>And so, the Office of the CTO was born - a team of about 30 people, half of whom are Google engineers, and half are whom are former CIOs and CTOs "who speak the executive language," he says. </span></p><p>Working with this office is reserved for big <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-spent-30-billion-on-cloud-and-is-making-progress-2017-3">Google customers like Home Depot and HSBC</a>. In a bigger-picture sense, though, <span>DeMichillie says that Google's willingness to go hands-on, a rarity in a company of their size, is a sign of how the search giant is trying to use the cloud to rethink the ways in which customers interact with vendors.</span></p><p><span>"This move to cloud," DeMichillie says, "has the opportunity to shake up those relationships." He goes on to say that "[customers] don't get a traditional vendor-client relationship."</span></p><h2><span>No quota</span></h2><p><span>"We're not sales; we're not quotaed," says DeMichillie. </span></p><p><span>Instead of pushing products on customers, it's the Office of the CTO's job to just listen, educate, and occasionally call in experts from across Google to help them think about what the cloud can do for them. </span></p><p><span>The first step is taking an inventory, he says: What services are they already using, how many servers do they have, what are they supposed to accomplish, "do you have a mainframe? Where is it?" And that kind of thing. Then, it's figuring out how to get them there. </span></p><p><span>Often, DeMichillie says, Google is called in to co-exist with existing services from Microsoft or Amazon; he says that it's in Google's best interest to make those kind of deals work. Google invests heavily in technology to make sure that Microsoft technologies like <a href="https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/instances/windows/creating-managing-windows-instances">SQL Server or Windows Server work seamlessly in its cloud</a>, as well as all kinds of connectors that let you hook them up to Google's cloud services.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The unofficial vision statement, DeMichillie says, is to "meet them where they are and take them further than they ever thought possible." In other words, Google would rather make sure that its stuff, especially secret weapons like its artificial intelligence capabilities, can make what you have even better, rather than risk losing you as a customer.</span></p><p>Along those same lines, <span>DeMichillie says that Google Cloud invests in tools for customers to get their data off the service, too. If a customer feels stuck in their relationship with Google, he says, "it's just not a good relationship for anybody."</span></p><h2><span></span>Exit strategy</h2><p>Once the customer has their house in order, so to speak, that's when the Office of the CTO hands it back off to "the rest of Google." From there, they can either finish the project themselves, or hire outside firms like Accenture or PWC to do it for them. </p><p>Past that engagement, <span>DeMichillie says, Google focuses a lot on developer outreach. Cloud computing doesn't work if programmers don't want to use it to build their applications, and so Google focuses a lot on teaching the virtues of building cloud-ready applications <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-urs-holzle-2017-3">the way that it does under its own roof</a>.</span></p><p><span>"We like that engineer-to-engineer relationship," DeMichillie says.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>This is really where Google's nontraditional approach of complementing other systems really pays off, DeMichillie says: Because Google Cloud makes sure that their services play nicely with others, like those Microsoft integrations, he says, it means that programmers aren't limited in the technologies they can use.</span></p><p><span></span><span>It's a reflection of the way that programmers like to work, and of the fact that they don't like having choices taken away. If they don't like the tool you built, they can go out and get another. Meet Google's team of ex-executives who translate programmer-speak and befriend VIP customers

Thomas is spearheading Google's bid to become a bigger player in the cloud.</li><li>George says their journey to America was not easy, but he has benefitted from having his twin brother, whom he calls his "best friend," as a companion and soulmate.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul><p>Growing up in India, George Kurian and his twin brother Thomas enjoyed playing pranks at home and in school by taking advantage of the fact that they look so much alike.</p><p>"He has sat in classes for me and I've sat in classes for him," George Kurian told Business Insider. "Occasionally, we'd be found out. Most of the time people couldn't tell…We got into lots of trouble together."</p><p>The Kurian brothers are the most famous and most important twins in Silicon Valley, where they are leading two major tech giants. George is CEO of NetApp, the data storage and management powerhouse, while Thomas is CEO of Google Cloud.</p><p>The brothers no longer engage in juvenile deceptions, although George Kurian laughed as he pondered the possibility of a prank: "I never got to Google Cloud for a day as CEO and he hasn't come to NetApp as CEO for a day. But that's likely something we want to think about."</p><p>He's joking, of course. The Kurian brothers have far more serious matters to think about as CEOs of two tech behemoths going through difficult transitions, which underscore the parallel paths they've taken since leaving India.</p><h2><strong>'We have common themes in our two journeys'</strong></h2><p>"We have common themes in our two journeys, him at Google and me at NetApp," George said. "Each of us inherited an organization that was successful in one aspect of the business and we're trying to pivot the organizations to go in a different direction."</p><p>That direction is the cloud, the fast growing trend in corporate tech which allows businesses to set up and run their networks on web-based platforms, and, in most cases, doing away with the enormous costs of setting up their own data centers. </p><p>Google is challenging Amazon and Microsoft in the battle to dominate the public cloud market. NetApp is reinventing itself from a seller of data storage appliances installed by customers in private data centers to one that offers a broader portfolio of cloud-focused data management products and services.</p><p>"He has to take a consumer internet-focused business and make it enterprise ready," George Kurian said of his brother Thomas's challenge. "And I have to take a traditional enterprise systems company and make it cloud-ready."</p><p>These are tough challenges, and George Kurian says he has benefitted from the feedback he and his brother still routinely give one another. "We've helped each other think through things," he said.</p><h2><strong>Coming to America was not easy</strong></h2><p>It's a bond they shared growing up in Bangalore and in their journey to America. </p><p>It was not an easy journey. </p><p>"I would not have had such an easy time coming to the US if I had not come with him," George Kurian said.</p><p>They came from a close family of four boys. "We have three engineers and a doctor - classic Indian situation," George said. Their father was also an engineer and their mother had worked as a teacher.</p><p>"We both stayed up the night before we left," he said. "I'll just tell you that it was not easy to leave."</p><p>Their mother was a particularly "big influence in our lives," George said</p><p>"She instilled in us the idea of resilience and toughness when you are two immigrant kids who came by yourselves to the US with 300 bucks in our pockets," he said. "You had to learn to make do, to find jobs, and both us worked while we were in college."</p><p>That made their bond stronger: "Both of us have been best friends for most of our lives."</p><p>They have also followed fairly similar paths in the US. They each earned an engineering degree from Princeton, and got their MBAs at Stanford. </p><p>They both worked at McKinsey and Oracle, where Thomas worked for 22 years, eventually rising to become president reporting directly to founder and former CEO Larry Ellison. </p><p>George worked for Cisco for nine years, before joining NetApp in 2011. When he was offered the CEO post, he checked with Thomas who he said told him, "Listen, they wouldn't make a change and give you the opportunity to be CEO if everything was going swimmingly well."</p><p>In fact, NetApp was wrestling with significant challenges then, George said. It was late in the transition to the emerging solid state storage technology, although NetApp subsequently managed to catch up with other rivals. The cloud trend was also accelerating, but NetApp had "in our go-to-market team a group of tired leaders who were out of ideas," George said.</p><p>When Thomas left Oracle in January to become CEO of Google Cloud, it was George's turn to give his brother some advice. "He was curious about how you manage a board and how you manage various stakeholders," he said. "It is challenging to to take an organization that has been very successful in one paradigm and take it to another paradigm," George said.</p><p>At Google, Thomas Kurian is at the helm of a major cloud player, but one that lags two bigger rivals, Amazon and Microsoft. He is also leading a company with a limited enterprise track record. In fact, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thomas-kurian-google-cloud-sales-account-director-2019-9">some of his ideas,</a> including sales strategies based on his Oracle experience, have been met with skepticism. </p><p>George Kurian is steering NetApp toward a more cloud-enabled future. When he joined the company in 2011, NetApp was focused "on selling infrastructure to telecom providers and had for the most part not done much with the big cloud providers, like Amazon, Google and Microsoft."</p><p>NetApp "made the hard pivot" to the cloud by shifting its focus from data stored and managed "on a few servers in a special location called a data center" to a new model where data is in many more places, from social media platforms to the shop floor.</p><h2>The bet pays off</h2><p>The pivot paid off.</p><p>"NetApp was an early mover in recognizing the importance of the public cloud and trying to take advantage of building relationships with public cloud vendors," Gartner analyst Roger Cox told Business Insider.</p><p>Today, Amazon, Microsoft and Google are "important partners" of NetApp, George said. (He notes that NetApp began working with Google even before his brother became CEO of Google Cloud.)</p><p>"We have big aspirations for our cloud business and we're doing it with partnerships with cloud providers," Kurian said. "The lesson we learned. You can't go it alone. It's important to partner. And customers like companies that partner well."</p><p>Cox said NetApp has become a leading provider of data storage management systems in which a business "can run applications on prem, on the core, on the edge, using common software," he said. </p><p>NetApp's share of the $20.6 billion external data storage market edged up from 11.2% in December 2016 to 13% in June 2019, according to Gartner. NetApp's longtime rival EMC, which is owned by Dell, remains number one with 30% market share in June. But Cox said EMC "does not have anything like what NetApp has."</p><p>He gives Kurian credit for NetApp's gains. </p><h2><strong>George Kurian led major changes at NetApp</strong></h2><p>"When you look at the turnaround NetApp has had since 2015, you've got to give credit to the person who is leading the parade, that's George," Cox added. "During that period of time, he completely revitalized the leadership of NetApp."</p><p>But the company's transformation has also been bumpy. NetApp has reported a year-over-year drop in revenue in the last two quarters. The company's stock has slipped about 9% year to date.</p><p>Cox said a big challenge for NetApp is being able to grow its customer base: "Their biggest problem is they don't have enough accounts," he said. "They rely too much on too few very large accounts for their revenue. When those large accounts don't come through, then they have a revenue problem."</p><p>Kurian acknowledged that this is a problem for a company that's very successful in the traditional way of selling and using data storage systems. </p><p>"You know our success in the old paradigm gives us an enormous install base and franchise, and you can lull yourself into complacency because of all that success we had and continue to have with that traditional customer base," he said.</p><p>That simply won't work in the cloud era, where customers are buying and using data storage systems in new and flexible ways. The challenge for NetApp, Kurian said, is "to continue to push people to lean in to the future as opposed to resting on their laurels from the past."</p><h2>Reconnecting with the past</h2><p>His role at NetApp has allowed him to reconnect with his past. Two years ago, he led the inauguration of NetApp's new R&amp;D facility in his native Bangalore. It was located just half a mile from where his dad used to work. </p><p>"We used to drive by there to go to my dad's office," he said, smiling.</p><p>His father died shortly before the facility opened, but George was able to tell him about it before he passed on.</p><p>"It was nice to see him smile when I told him about where it was and we talked about the memories of driving by it. It's a sweet memory. I'll always remember that."</p><p>He remembers his own journey at a time when immigration has become a hot-button political issue, and immigrants have become a target.</p><p>"They're giving up a lot to come here," he said. "They're giving up their families. They're giving up their friendships. They're giving up the comfort of the language and the culture they grew up in to come here. They're not making that decision lightly."</p><p>Sharing that journey with his twin brother did make it easier, he said.
