Earth Day 2024: Actress Bhumi talks about 'Pednekar ke ped', ostrich mentality, climate anxiety and more

A deadly heat wave gripped large regions of Asia for weeks in April and May 2024. As temperatures climbed past 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius) in India on May 7, campaigning politicians, local news announcers and voters waiting in long lines passed out from the oppressive heat. From as far north as Japan to as far south as the Philippines, the relentless heat wreaked havoc on everyday life. Students and teachers in Cambodia were sent home from school, as their hand-held fans provided little protection against the stifling heat and humidity in their poorly ventilated classrooms. Farmers in Thailand saw their crops wither and mourned the loss of livestock that perished under the punishing sun. Hundreds of people died from the heat. Most of the planet has suffered the dire effects of <keyword id="20563038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-heat" source="keywords">extreme heat</keyword> in recent years. A weekslong heat wave in the southwestern United States in 2023 was described as "hell on earth" in Phoenix, where temperatures hit 110 F (43.3 C) or higher for 31 straight days. At the same time, Europe saw unprecedented high temperatures that killed hundreds and contributed to devastating wildfires in Greece. Regardless of where or when a heat wave strikes, one pattern is a constant: Older adults are the most likely to die from extreme heat, and this crisis will worsen in the coming years. We study <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> and population aging. Our research documents two global trends that together portend a dire future. More older adults will be at risk of heat stress First, temperatures are hotter than ever. The nine-year period from 2015 and 2023 had the highest average temperatures since global records began in 1880. Second, the population is aging worldwide. By 2050, the number of people ages 60 and older will double to nearly 2.1 billion, making up 21 per cent of the <keyword id="21055680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-population" source="keywords">global population</keyword>. That proportion is 13 per cent today. These combined forces mean that ever-rising numbers of vulnerable older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat. To understand the risks ahead, we developed population projections for different age groups and combined them with climate change scenarios for the coming decades. Our analyses show that by 2050, more than 23 per cent of the world population ages 69 and older will be living in regions where peak temperatures routinely surpass 99.5 degrees F (37.5 degrees C), compared with just 14 per cent today. That means that as many as 250 million additional older adults will be exposed to dangerously high temperatures. Mapping the data shows that most of these older adults live in lower- and middle-income countries with insufficient services and limited access to electricity, cooling appliances and safe water. In historically cooler regions in the Global North, including North America and Europe, <keyword id="20707229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rising-temperatures" source="keywords">rising temperatures</keyword> will be the main force driving older adults' heat exposure. In historically hotter regions in the Global South such as Asia, Africa and South America, population growth and increases in longevity mean that steeply rising numbers of older adults will be exposed to intensifying heat-related risks. Policymakers, communities, families and older residents themselves need to understand these risks and be prepared because of older adults' special vulnerabilities to heat. Extreme heat is especially harmful to older adults High temperatures are oppressive for everyone, but for older adults they can be deadly. Extreme heat worsens common age-related health conditions such as heart, lung and kidney disease and can cause delirium. Older people don't sweat as much as younger people, which makes it harder for their bodies to cool down when temperatures spike. These problems are intensified by common prescription medications, such as anticholinergics, which further reduce the capacity to sweat. Spending time outdoors in hot humid weather can cause dehydration, a problem worsened by the side effects of prescription medications such as diuretics and beta-blockers. Dehydration can make older adults weak and dizzy, increasing their risk of falls and injury. These threats are even worse in regions lacking access to safe and affordable drinking water. Poor air quality makes it difficult to breath, especially for those who already have lung problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. For older adults with physical health problems, temperatures as low as 80 F (26.7 C) can pose significant danger. And when humidity is as high as 90 per cent, even 78 F (25.6 C) can be hazardous to older adults. Nighttime heat is especially harmful for older adults whose homes lack air conditioning or who can't afford to run their air conditioners for long periods. The ideal temperature for older adults' restful sleep is between 68 and 77 F (20 and 25 C), and sleep quality diminishes as temperatures rise. A night of restless sleep can make an older adult more depressed and confused during their waking hours. Medications also can lose their effectiveness if stored in places much warmer than 77 F (25 C). Older adults also may suffer emotionally during stifling <keyword id="20472420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heat-waves" source="keywords">heat waves</keyword> Being stuck indoors when temperatures are unbearable can make older adults bored, depressed and isolated. People with cognitive impairments may underestimate the dangers of extreme heat or may not understand the heat advisories. Those who have physical mobility limitations or lack access to transportation can't easily travel to public cooling centers - if there is one nearby - or find relief in nearby "green and blue areas," such as parks and lakes. These threats are especially dire in low- and middle-income nations, where older adults are more likely to live in substandard housing and lack access to high-quality health care or ways to cool down in the heat. We talk about this as "systemic cooling poverty." What can be done? Policymakers can work to cut greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and factories, which drive global warming, and develop effective plans to protect older people from heat risk. Older adults and their caregivers also can take steps to adapt. But efforts to help need to be tailored to each region and population. Wealthy municipalities can increase public investments in early warning systems and ride services to cooling centers and hospitals. They can use geographic information systems to identify neighborhoods with high concentrations of older adults and expand power grids to manage increasing demand for air conditioning. In regions with substandard housing, limited access to clean water and few public supports such as cooling centers, much larger changes are necessary. Providing better health care, water and housing and reducing air pollution that can mitigate health problems during heat waves require significant changes and investments many countries struggle to afford. The World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization warn that this decade will be critical for preparing communities to handle rising heat and the risk to aging populations. Across all regions, researchers, practitioners and policymakers could save lives by heeding their call. Business Insider was unable to independently verify the documents.A COP28 spokesman told Business Insider that the documents had not been used in meetings.'The documents referred to in the BBC article are inaccurate and were not used by COP28 in meetings," he said. Plus, they said the kind of worker action that's made the news in recent months is often contagious."Many of the strikes we are seeing — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ups-teamsters-union-reach-deal-avoid-strike-contract-pay-2023-7">Teamsters and UPS</a>, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-auto-workers-strike-general-motors-hit-hardest">UAW at auto companies</a> — are in the very industries that have experienced especially high profits," Matthew Johnson, assistant professor of public policy and economics at Duke University, told Insider. "This makes unionizing appealing since unions might be better positioned to carve out some of these profits for workers."Low unemployment and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-american-consumer-spending-recession-outlook-slowdown-savings-bofa-2023-10">strong consumer spending</a> have also been key to recent union wins. When workers know they have other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-rate-recession-outlook-labor-market-wages-federal-reserve-2023-11">options in the job market</a> — and companies are eager to meet customer demand — the conditions tend to favor unions, Victor Chen, associate professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University, told Insider."The strike is their chief weapon, and when members aren't afraid to use it — which is the case now — companies often realize how much they need labor and make pragmatic deals to avoid further losses," he said.While only <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/union2.pdf">11%</a> of US workers are represented by a union that could take action like those in the news recently, the same forces propelling unions could push non-union workers to unionize — or simply flex their bargaining power during their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salary-increases-raises-2024-jobs-negotiate-inflation-employees-wage-growth-2023-10">next salary negotiation</a>. Experts told Insider they expect more workers in the auto, healthcare, education, and food service industries, among others, to demand more from their employers in the years to come.<h2>Burnout, labor shortages, and AI could motivate workers to push for more</h2>Industries with rising worker discontent and favorable economic conditions can be ripe for union activity.In October, over 75,000 Kaiser Permanente healthcare employees went on strike, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kaiser-permanente-strike-healthcare-workers-largest-us-history-2023-9">largest healthcare strike in US history</a> and one Johnson said had been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-nurses-strike-labor-union-staffing-shortage-covid-2023-1">years in the making</a>."COVID just exacerbated the high rates of burnout and stress in this sector," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if strikes and union organizing permeate throughout this sector."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teacher-shortage-schools-nurses-daycare-costs-inflation-rate-retail-workers-2023-10#healthcare-1">Roughly 100,000 nurses</a> left the workforce during the pandemic, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing said in April. At the same time, an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aging-population-healthcare">aging US population</a> is expected to increase the demand for healthcare workers. Both factors could give workers in the industry the leverage to push for better wages and working conditions.Caroline Lucas, executive director of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.unioncoalition.org/">Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions</a>, told Insider the strike had caught the attention of non-union healthcare professionals."Short staffing is still a major crisis at healthcare facilities across the country," she said.A similar story could play out for other workers who endured hardships during the pandemic — and whose industries are still struggling to fill open positions, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-stretched-thin-feels-like-well-crumble-national-education-association-2021-10">teachers</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-workers-pay-quit-impact-on-children-tuition-increase-2023-4">childcare professionals</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ways-fast-food-will-be-different-after-the-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-5">food service workers</a>."From meatpacking plants to grocery stores and coffee shops, workers are realizing more than ever, not just how essential they are, but the strength that comes from standing together to improve their working conditions," Dave Young, International Vice President for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ufcw.org/">United Food and Commercial Workers</a> union, told Insider.VCU's Chen also expects concerns about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-jobs-at-risk-replacement-artificial-intelligence-ai-labor-trends-2023-02">AI job replacement</a> to spur more workers to organize. And if the economy remains strong, he said "previously untouchable" corporations like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-labor-union">Amazon</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-sues-starbucks-allegedly-fired-barista-union-organizing-2022-9">Starbucks</a> could see more worker movements and unionization.Coming off a major win with the UAW strike, the auto industry, where only 16% of US workers are unionized, could be poised for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/29/business/uaw-ford-contract.html">more labor movements</a>.<h2>Worker movements can be contagious</h2>While the economic climate has been crucial in fueling union activity across the US, public and political support — particularly from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/union-petitions-increased-since-biden-took-office-nlrb-2023-10">President Biden</a> — have also been key pieces of the puzzle."Unions have momentum these days," Eunice Han, an assistant economics professor at the University of Utah, told Insider. "Public approval of labor unions is at its highest since the 1960s."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-strike-support-union-bipartisan-2023-10">Public support for unions</a> has helped keep workers on the picket line and made companies more hesitant to retaliate against striking workers — and risk consumer backlash, Duke's Johnson said.To be sure, the economic conditions that have spurred union workers to strike — and non-union workers to push for higher pay — might not last forever. In recent months, the unemployment rate has risen slightly to 3.9% in October, <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/JTSJOL">job openings</a> have fallen from their record highs, and multiple headwinds are expected to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-payments-debt-service-cost-consumer-spending-economic-outlook-2023-9">slow consumers' spending</a> in the coming months.But in the near term, some labor movements will likely persist even if conditions aren't perfect. That's because, in addition to being fueled by worker discontent, economic trends, and public support, these movements can have a domino effect."Research going back decades finds that successful strikes are contagious," Jake Rosenfeld, professor of sociology at Washington University, told Insider. "They lead to more strikes."

Why strikes are working and which industries could be next

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Countries adopted the first-ever climate deal that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels.</li><li>The deal also calls for the world to triple renewable energy by 2030.</li></ul>DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Nearly 200 countries on Wednesday reached a historic climate deal calling for the transition away from fossil fuels starting this decade and the tripling of renewable energy by 2030.The deal marks the first time that countries addressed the leading cause of the climate crisis – burning coal, oil, and gas – and set a global target for boosting renewables like solar and wind power. Past UN climate agreements have mostly avoided fossil fuels."It's clear that the era of fossil fuels is coming to a close," Joab Okanda, senior climate advisor at Christian Aid, a relief organization, said in a statement. "We may not have driven a nail in the coffin here in Dubai but the end is coming for dirty energy."Diplomats were negotiating into the early hours on Wednesday to strike a balance between more than 100 countries who demanded a "phase out" of fossil fuels – something small island nations facing rising sea levels said their very existence depends on – and major oil, gas, and coal producing nations like Saudi Arabia and China who opposed such language.Many climate advocates said that this years' summit, known as COP28, would be a failure without a fossil fuel "phase out." But the compromise is stronger than a draft released Monday, which said countries "could" choose from a menu of options to decarbonize their economies. That draft was described by an official from Samoa as a "death sentence."The location of this year's UN summit makes the compromise especially significant. The United Arab Emirates is the seventh-largest oil producer in the world and a member of OPEC, a powerful oil cartel that lobbied against a fossil fuel "phase out" in the days before a final deal was reached. The role of Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of the Emirate's state-owned oil company, as COP28 president also attracted intense scrutiny of whether he could rally world leaders around a deal to transition away from fossil fuels.Al Jaber on Wednesday congratulated countries for putting the common interest ahead of self interests and said the deal can lead to transformational change.Jean Su, acting co-executive director at the Center for Biological Diversity, told reporters on Wednesday that Al Jaber's role as an oil executive worked in civil society's favor."It finally dragged fossil fuels onto center stage and forced politicians to deal with it," she said.The compromise does have several caveats that leave the door open to more fossil fuel production, including references to technologies that capture greenhouse gas emissions and store them away. Critics argue that carbon capture technology is an unproven and expensive distraction from renewable energy, which is cheaper and available now. The deal also says that "transitional fuels" can play a role in the energy transition – a nod to gas, which is less polluting than coal, but still a major contributor to global warming.Climate scientists warn that the world must cut emissions by at least 42% this decade, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels. Otherwise, it will be difficult for humans to adapt to more extreme disasters like heat waves, drought, flooding, and rising sea levels.The world has already warmed an average of 1.2 degrees Celsius and <a target="_blank" href="https://wmo.int/news/media-centre/2023-shatters-climate-records-major-impacts#:~:text=Global%20Temperatures,-The%20global%20mean&amp;text=Based%20on%20the%20data%20to,(%C2%B10.13)%20%C2%B0C.">countries are dealing with the fallout</a>, including a deadly wildfire in Hawaii, drought in the Horn of Africa, and sweltering heat waves. This year is on track to be the hottest on record.<h2>Big promises, disappointing delivery</h2>The deal in Dubai caps another UN summit where big promises are made, but rarely delivered. In 2015, countries struck the Paris Agreement that urged emissions cuts in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius target. Since then, emissions<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carbon-emissions-2022-record-renewables-growth-solar-wind-iea-2023-3"> have risen to record levels</a>, although a rapid rise in solar, wind, and electric vehicles has slowed the pace.In 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland, countries agreed to phase down coal plants that aren't equipped with technology to capture emissions as well as "inefficient" fossil fuel subsidies.Yet both issues are headed in the opposite direction. China and India continue to build new coal plants and fossil fuel subsidies <a target="_blank" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2023/08/24/fossil-fuel-subsidies-surged-to-record-7-trillion">surged to a record $7 trillion in 2022</a> as countries dealt with the global energy crisis following Russia's invasions of Ukraine, according to the International Monetary Fund.Meanwhile, poorer nations are always trying to hold rich economies like the US and Europe accountable to their promises to finance efforts to respond to the climate crisis.In Dubai, countries set up a "loss and damage" fund for counties most vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis that raised at least $700 million. The deal also called for doubling adaptation finance for developing countries by 2025 – estimated at about $40 billion. Adaptation refers to efforts by countries more resilient to extreme weather and rising seas, like early warning systems, restoring forests and mangroves that can be natural barriers to flooding, and building sea walls."Even if we phase out fossil fuels, we still have to deal with the inevitable impacts of climate change," Mohamed Adow, director of Power Shift Africa, told reporters. He pointed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.unep.org/resources/adaptation-gap-report-2023">to a recent UN report</a> that said $387 billion in adaptation finance is needed per year.<h2>A tool for accountability</h2>Even though climate action is slow, observers told BI that without the annual UN summits, there wouldn't be much transparency or accountability. The voluntary agreements don't guarantee any outcomes, but they do set the global direction of travel, according to Alden Meyer, a COP veteran and senior associate at the EG3 think tank."Countries are required to show how they're living up to what they decided here, both in their national pledges under the Paris agreement and in their actions back home," Meyer told BI.He added that whether China stops building new coal plants, or the US stops permitting new gas export facilities, can't be decided at UN climate summits. But the event, which attracts tens of thousands of people, puts the pressure on these countries to do more, Meyer said.People will always ask whether voluntary declarations can make a difference, US Senator Brian Shatz, a Democrat from Hawaii, said during a press conference earlier this week."If they didn't, they wouldn't have the fossil fuel industry so nervous," Shatz said, in response to a question about the <a target="_blank" href="https://kickbigpollutersout.org/articles/release-record-number-fossil-fuel-lobbyists-attend-cop28">nearly 2,500 fossil fuel lobbyists who attended</a> the summit in Dubai – about four times more than previous event. Pipa said the average recovery time after natural disasters is longer, meaning people are staying in shelters longer and require extra support to transition to sustainable housing. "We've found that 60 to 90 days post-disaster, many national organizations that have come in to provide immediate support have left and are no longer present, so resources aren't available for families," Pipa said. "That's why we're bringing in what we call bridge assistance."To address longer-term needs, the Red Cross has identified some of the most vulnerable communities and is providing families with more direct financial aid for security deposits, home repairs, and child care. The relief organization is also extending case work for up to a year, which assists people with access to healthcare, food, and housing. Nearly 400 households affected by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and the atmospheric rivers in California have participated. The Red Cross is adding 69 staffers, the majority of whom will be located at the local level. By the end of 2024, these employees will be in 15 counties across a dozen states.Establishing relationships with small nonprofits, religious organizations, and other community groups before disaster strikes is also part of the strategy, Pipa said. These groups don't always know how to plug in to a disaster-relief operation or access federal dollars, but they're often critical to delivering food to rural residents or providing healthcare."There are three distinct barriers to recovery: housing, food insecurity, and physical and mental health," Pipa said. "Those are all things that we see consistently keep folks from transitioning from shelters to their next recovery step. The Red Cross won't ever be everything to everyone. So connecting families with community partners that have expertise in these areas results in better outcomes for families."

In Antarctica, a high-pressure system called a "heat dome" also moved in and sat over the eastern side of the continent, trapping heat and moisture there, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2022/03/18/antarctica-heat-wave-climate-change/?utm_campaign=Daily%20Briefing&amp;utm_content=20220321&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter">The Washington Post</a>."Are these two heat waves linked?
