<ul class="summary-list"><li>Climate change is increasing the severity of natural disasters — and home insurance prices.</li><li>For those moving to a climate-risk state, there are some steps you can take to protect your home.</li></ul><p>Finding an affordable home in a red-hot real estate market is already a tremendous feat.</p><p>And now, in addition to rapidly rising prices, home buyers are increasingly worried about another factor: climate change.</p><p>According to Zillow, more than 80% of home buyers considered climate risks — including flood, wildfire, and hurricane — when shopping for a house.</p><p>In particular, climate change complicates the homebuying process by sending <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-homeowners-insurance-premium-costs-crisis-skyrocketing-states-hurricanes-2024-10">home insurance premiums skyrocketing</a>. As storms and other natural disasters become more destructive, home insurance providers are raising rates or pulling out of certain states altogether, according to insurance company Insurify.</p><p>According to Holden Lewis, a home insurance expert at NerdWallet, climate change is hitting states such as <strong>California</strong>, <strong>Florida</strong>, <strong>North Carolina</strong>, <strong>Tennessee</strong>, <strong>Virginia</strong>, <strong>Texas</strong>, <strong>Oklahoma</strong>, <strong>Kansas</strong>, and <strong>Nebraska</strong> the hardest — and wildly disrupting these states' home insurance markets.</p><p>If you're looking to purchase a house in these high-risk markets, here's what you need to know about rapidly rising home insurance rates.</p><h2 id="4ca151ec-b6df-44db-821b-3b925503bc08"><strong>How to navigate the insurance landscape when moving</strong></h2><p>As climate change exacerbates the frequency and severity of natural disasters, homes are at higher risk of damage. Insurance companies in turn are raising prices to cover the higher costs of covering claims and reinsurance, or insurance for insurance companies.</p><p>According to financial data firm Bankrate, the national average cost of home insurance is $2,285 a year for up to $300,000 of dwelling coverage. But in high climate-risk states such as Nebraska, Florida, and Oklahoma, average annual premiums range from $4,835 to $5,655.</p><p>It might seem obvious, one step homebuyers can take to avoid surprises is consider home insurance costs early in the homebuying process, Lewis said. As insurance premiums increase, they can materially impact your monthly housing payments and push a home out of your affordability zone.</p><p>Prospective buyers shopping for homes in a new state are especially prone to insurance sticker shock, according to Lewis. For example, if you're thinking of moving from Ohio to Texas, you might not be aware that the average homeowners insurance rate in cyclone-prone Texas is $3,916 a year — $2,600 more than in Ohio, Lewis pointed out.</p><p>Still, climate-risk states remain popular. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uhaul.com/Articles/About/U-Haul-Announces-Top-Growth-States-Of-2023-30660/">U-Haul</a>, Texas and Florida received the highest influx of new residents in 2023.</p><p>Many of these newcomers might not have done their homework on the home insurance market before moving to the state, according to Stephanie L., homeowner and lifelong Florida resident who asked not to use her full last name for privacy reasons.</p><p>There's a lack of consumer awareness of the financial risk extreme weather brings, in Stephanie's opinion. "If you purchase a beautiful home on a river, you have to understand that with the way storms come in, you could be at risk," Stephanie told Business Insider in an interview.</p><p>Even within climate-risk states, you can minimize your home's exposure to extreme weather and bring down insurance premiums by researching the local neighborhood.</p><p>When Stephanie bought her house, she picked a location in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, which has less exposure to hurricane risk than other areas of the Sunshine state.</p><p>"We definitely looked for high and dry, not in a flood zone, and not in a hurricane evacuation zone," Stephanie said.</p><p>Indeed, Jacksonville home insurance premiums are significantly lower than Florida's state average of $5,527, with homeowners paying an average of $2,705 a year for insurance according to Bankrate.</p><p>Next, when it comes by a natural disaster, you want to ensure that the insurance policy can fully cover rebuilding costs. Many policies offer dwelling coverage limits in line with the market value of the house, but that's not always sufficient coverage, according to Lewis.</p><p>"The market value of the house the day before a fire or storm might be less than the actual cost to rebuild it to current building codes," Lewis said.</p><p>For prospective homebuyers, Lewis recommends clarifying the dwelling coverage limit with the insurance agent and shopping around for available policies.</p><p>Also important to note is that flood coverage often isn't included in standard homeowners insurance policies. This is an important consideration if you're looking to buy a house in an area prone to hurricanes.</p><p>"If water is rising, say from a river, or storm surge, then a standard homeowners policy will not cover that damage," Lewis said.</p><p>Stephanie purchased flood insurance in addition to her regular homeowners insurance when she purchased a home.</p><p>"I also have a separate flood policy even though I'm not in a floodplain," she said. "When you're not in a flood zone, flood insurance is pretty affordable."</p><p>Although Stephanie isn't at high risk for flooding, she still wants to be prepared for the worst. It's not a bad idea to go the extra mile and purchase extra insurance when it comes to buying a home in Florida, even if you're not directly in a flood zone.</p><p>In addition to hurricane-prone Gulf Coast states, regions like western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southern Virginia are flooding hotspots, according to Lewis.</p><p>Lastly, homeowners also should consider how inflation<strong> </strong>will drive up home insurance costs, especially as concerns over inflation loom high in today's economy. An inflationary environment will increase the cost of building materials and construction, Lewis pointed out.</p><p>As a result, it may be a good idea to review your coverage every year or two to evaluate the status of your coverage, Lewis said.</p><p>"Talk to the agent, maybe even talk to a general contractor just to find out, 'Hey, am I still covered? Do I still have enough coverage to pay to rebuild this home?'" Researchers from India, Sweden, the US and the UK warned that such events will become more common as the climate continues to warm. <br /><br />To measure the impact of human-caused climate change, the scientists from the <keyword id="12008149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Weather-Attribution" source="Orion">World Weather Attribution</keyword> (WWA) group analysed climate models with high enough resolution to accurately reflect rainfall in the relatively small study area. <br /><br />The models indicated that the intensity of rainfall has increased by 10 per cent due to climate change, they said. <br /><br />The models also predict a further four per cent increase in rainfall intensity if the average <keyword id="21951013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperature" source="keywords">global temperature</keyword> rises by two degrees Celsius compared to the 1850-1900 average. <br /><br />The scientists, however, said there is a "high level of uncertainty" in the model results as the study area is small and mountainous with complex rainfall-climate dynamics. <br /><br />Having said that, the increase in heavy one-day rainfall events aligns with a growing body of scientific evidence on extreme rainfall in a warming world, including in India, and the understanding that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. <br /><br />According to scientists, the atmosphere's capacity to hold moisture increases by about 7 per cent for every one-degree Celsius rise in global temperature. <br /><br />The Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.3 degrees Celsius due to the rapidly rising concentration of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane. Scientists say this is the reason behind worsening <keyword id="19912530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather-events" source="keywords">extreme weather events</keyword>, such as droughts, heat waves and floods worldwide. <br /><br />The WWA scientists said that while the relationship between land cover, land use changes and landslide risk in Wayanad is not fully clear from existing studies, factors, such as quarrying for building materials and a 62 per cent reduction in forest cover may have increased the slopes' susceptibility to landslides during heavy rainfall. <br /><br />Other researchers have also linked the <keyword id="22597176" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wayanad-landslides" source="keywords">Wayanad landslides</keyword> to a combination of forest cover loss, mining in fragile terrain and prolonged rain followed by heavy precipitation. <br /><br />S Abhilash, the director of the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), had earlier told PTI that the warming of the Arabian Sea is leading to the formation of deep cloud systems, resulting in extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in a short period and increasing the risk of landslides. <br /><br />"Our research found that the southeast Arabian Sea is becoming warmer, causing the atmosphere above Kerala to become thermodynamically unstable. This instability is allowing the formation of deep clouds," he had said. <br /><br />According to the landslide atlas released by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre last year, 10 out of the top 30 landslide-prone districts in India are in Kerala, with Wayanad ranked at the 13th spot. <br /><br />A study published by Springer in 2021 said all landslide hotspots in Kerala are in the Western Ghats region and are concentrated in Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. <br /><br />It said about 59 per cent of total landslides in Kerala have occurred in plantation areas. <br /><br />A 2022 study on depleting forest cover in Wayanad showed that 62 per cent of forests in the district disappeared between 1950 and 2018, while plantation cover rose by around 1,800 per cent.

That's according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-alter-human-life-un-ipcc-report-2022-2">a report</a> released Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a <keyword id="11893452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="un" source="Orion">UN</keyword> body that summarizes years of research on the climate crisis.</p><p>If global temperatures reach 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — a scenario that assumes very high levels of greenhouse gas emissions — half of our plant and animal species could be threatened, according to the report. At that level of warming, the world could see mass mortalities and extinctions that permanently alter rainforests, kelp forests, and tropical coral reefs.</p><p>Even if global temperatures reach 1.5 degrees Celsius, the report found, up to 14% of land species could face high risk of extinction. Human-caused emissions have already led the planet to warm by 1.1 degrees Celsius in the last 170 years, last year's portion of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/still-time-to-address-climate-change-ipcc-scientists-report-2021-8">IPCC report</a> found.</p><p>Under 2 degrees of warming, up 18% of land species could be at high risk of extinction. That risk rises to up to 29% under 3 degrees of warming, up to 39% at 4 degrees, and up to 48% at 5 degrees.</p><div type="image" title="endangered frog" height="1600" width="2400" msid="89951597" hostid="261"></div><p>Invertebrate species face one of the highest risks of extinction from mid-levels of warming (3.2 degrees Celsius), according to the report. Under this scenario, 15% of invertebrates — including 24% of salamanders and 11% of amphibians — could go extinct.</p><p>No matter what happens to global temperatures, the report said, the extinction of species is an irreversible impact of climate change.</p><h2>Arctic penguins, seals, and polar bears are at risk of extinction</h2><div type="image" title="polar bear arctic" height="1728" width="2432" msid="89951600" hostid="261"></div><p>Species in cold areas, including high mountains or polar regions, face a particularly high extinction risk.</p><p>Arctic animals such as penguins, seals, and polar bears would be seriously threatened by 2 degrees of warming or less, according to the report. The animals have evolved to live on sea ice, which is rapidly retreating due to rising temperatures. The report predicts that sea ice will completely disappear in summertime within the next century.</p><p>That means some Arctic animals could go extinct in coming decades, unless they're moved to new locations.</p><p>But relocating animals to foreign habitats is tricky: For instance, moving polar bears to Antarctica could lead them to prey on local penguin populations there. In some cases, animal species may need to be moved to zoos to keep them from dying out.</p><p>Tropical areas face their own threats, such as heatwaves destroying coral reefs and mangroves. Up to 90% of tropical coral reefs could be lost by mid-century under 1.5 degrees of warming, the report found, while the reefs could go entirely extinct under 2 degrees of warming.</p><h2>Animal extinctions could threaten human health, too</h2><div type="image" title="fish market Seychelles" height="3360" width="5040" msid="89951602" hostid="261"></div><p>In some cases, the extinction of animal species can topple entire ecosystems.</p><p>Ecosystems <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/biodiversity/intro/index_en.htm">depend on biodiversity</a> — a variety of plants, animals, and other organisms — to protect them from pollution, <keyword id="12019615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="extreme-weather" source="Orion">extreme weather</keyword>, and temperature shifts. But if one species dies out, it makes it harder for others to survive. Loss of biodiversity can, in turn, lead to crop failure and water scarcity, according to the report.</p><p>Just a half-degree of additional warming could mean the difference between whether a species stays alive or not.</p><p>The <keyword id="6941656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ipcc" source="Orion">IPCC</keyword> authors found that the extinction risk for local species in biodiversity hotspots could double between 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees of warming, and increase at least 10-fold from 1.5 degrees to 3 degrees.</p><p>The death of animal species has consequences for humans, too.</p><p>More than 400 million people in Africa and Asia depend on fisheries for protein. Even if warming doesn't exceed 1.6 degrees, fisheries in Africa's tropical regions could lose up to 41% of their yield by the end of the century due to the extinction of local marine fish.</p><p>Commonly consumed fish like sardines and herring could also face extinction as oceans warm. </p><p>"This matters for human well-being as well," David Dodman, a lead author of the report and director of human settlements at the International Institute for Environment and Development, told Insider.</p><p>"So many people around the world still rely on very close interactions with natural ecosystems to provide them with food and to provide them with livelihoods."</p>

It's one of the main gases driving global warming.</p><p>An estimated one-quarter of humans' methane <keyword id="12152918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="emissions" source="Orion">emissions</keyword> come from extracting coal, oil, and natural gas for fuel. Occasionally, the wells and pipelines that carry that fuel will experience a major leak.</p><p>But a new planet-wide map, based on thousands of <keyword id="12292571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="satellite-images" source="Orion">satellite images</keyword>, reveals that fossil-fuel operations are secretly leaking far more methane than researchers thought, and they're doing it on a daily basis.</p><div type="image" title="satellite image show green methane plume in the southern united states" height="1874" width="2499" msid="89332853" hostid="261"></div><p>"We didn't realize initially that every day we would find these giant emitters around the globe," Thomas Lauvaux, a researcher studying greenhouse-gas emissions at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), who led the mapping effort, told Insider.</p><p>"It's leaking everywhere," he added, "and we're not doing a good job."</p><p>Lauvaux led an international team of researchers to analyze two years of daily data from Europe's Sentinel-5P satellite, from 2019 through 2020. The view from space revealed 1,800 methane plumes. Most of these hotspots — 1,200 of them, primarily in the US and western Asia — are linked to fossil-fuel extraction operations, like oil and gas pipelines.</p><div type="image" title="world map shows oil gas pipelines with clusters of orange dots representing major methane emissions" height="4005" width="5341" msid="89332855" hostid="261"></div><p>"We thought it would happen once in a while, and they were very specific events in specific places, accidental mostly," Lauvaux said, adding, "Not at all. They're very systematic. They come back a lot along the infrastructure: pipelines and compressor stations and wells."</p><p>He suspects that many of these methane plumes come from routine maintenance.</p><p>"They open the valves, and the methane and natural gas blow out, and in the meantime, they can fix whatever they have to fix," he said.</p><p>Lauvaux's team consists of researchers from CNRS, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), and the data-analytics company Kayrros. Their <a href="http://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abm1676">study</a> was published in the journal <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">Science</keyword> on Thursday.</p><p>Based on this and a <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/22042020/permian-basin-methane-emissions-texas-new-mexico/">series</a> of <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.0c04117">prior</a> <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aar7204">studies</a> that have <a href="https://research.noaa.gov/article/ArtMID/587/ArticleID/2474/Airborne-research-shows-East-Coast-cities-emitting-twice-as-much-methane-as-estimated">measured methane</a> at particular sites, Lauvaux roughly estimates that human activities could be emitting twice as much methane as governments report.</p><h2>The methane map is 'scary,' but it represents a big opportunity</h2><div type="image" title="yellow gas pipeline above worker in blue jumpsuit in snow" height="1549" width="2065" msid="89332856" hostid="261"></div><p>The methane plumes in the new map have a warming effect on Earth's atmosphere that's comparable to 20 million additional vehicles on the road for one year, according to the study.</p><p>"It's a little scary," Lauvaux said, adding, "Very few leaks are responsible for a huge amount of methane."</p><p>But it also presents an opportunity: If governments and fossil-fuel companies stop these few major leaks, it will make a big dent in their emissions. It's low-hanging fruit, Lauvaux said, and stopping routine leaks could even save companies money.</p><p>In the US, ultra-emitters could save $250 per ton of methane if they eliminate routine leaks, the researchers calculated.</p><p>The US, Turkmenistan, Russia, and Iran are some of the biggest culprits on Lauvaux's map. He was surprised to find relatively few methane flares in oil states like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. He's not sure why — that's a subject for future research. </p><p>Still, Lauvaux's team estimated that their map represents just one-tenth of the fossil-fuel industry's total methane emissions. These are just the biggest plumes, releasing more than 25 metric tons of methane per hour. There are surely many smaller plumes that the satellite can't detect.</p><p>What's more, Lauvaux had to leave the Permian Basin — a major US gas field — out of his analysis, because the baseline methane levels there were too high to detect individual plumes.</p><p>"We have more work to do than we imagine," Lauvaux said, adding, "That's for sure."</p>

Two months of consecutive rain have killed 1,191 people as of Wednesday, according to Pakistan's <a href="http://cms.ndma.gov.pk/storage/app/public/situation-reports/August2022/AQxxCfU9o78SEudlTEyf.pdf">National Disaster Management Authority</a>.</p><p>"Pakistan is awash in suffering," Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations, said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/antonioguterres/status/1564556094680227841?s=20&amp;t=qsHdbX6KfBkS5JI9pG8fFw">video statement</a> Tuesday, while issuing an urgent appeal for $160 million in aid. "The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids — the relentless impact of epochal levels of rain and flooding," he added.</p><p>Wealthy industrialized countries have pumped far more greenhouse gas emissions — a key driver of climate change — into the air than Pakistan, a low-emitting nation. Early government estimates put the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-keep-moving-to-disaster-prone-areas-new-report-warns-2022-4">damage from the floods</a> at more than $10 billion. </p><p>"Seventy-two districts of Pakistan are in calamity and all four corners of Pakistan are underwater," Sharif said at a press conference Tuesday, according to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/30/pakistan-monsoon-on-steroids-flooding-warning-antonio-guterres">The Guardian</a>. But this monsoon season, rainfall in Pakistan has been nearly three times the national average over the past 30 years, according to a <a href="https://reliefweb.int/report/pakistan/pakistan-2022-monsoon-floods-situation-report-no-03-26-august-2022">UN report</a> released in August.</p><p>Sherry Rehman, Pakistan's climate change minister, said on Twitter that one town in Sindh saw 67 inches of rain in one day. "Unheard of, anywhere," Rehman <a href="https://twitter.com/sherryrehman/status/1564259863508799498">tweeted</a>.</p><p>The disaster echoes the devastating <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/features/PakistanFloods">2010 floods</a> in Pakistan, which killed more than 2,000.</p><h1><div type="image" title="Pakistani people wade through floodwater following flash flood in Hyderabad southern Sindh province Pakistan, August 30, 2022." height="3712" width="5568" msid="93913419" hostid="261" sizebytes="835868"></div>Floods hit more places and people due to climate change</h1><p>A growing body of research suggests human-caused climate change makes floods more likely and more severe, according to the latest report from the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg2/downloads/report/IPCC_AR6_WGII_FullReport.pdf">United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a>. Rising temperatures warm up the atmosphere, and warmer air can retain more water, leading to more intense rainfall and flooding events. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/melting-glaciers-reveal-human-remains-plane-wreck-swiss-alps-2022-8">Melting glaciers and snow</a> also contribute to flooding. "</em>We are on the front of unfolding climate catastrophe," she added.</p><h1>'It is not our fault at all'</h1><p>Despite producing <a href="https://www.unep.org/gan/news/press-release/pakistan-develop-national-adaptation-plan-climate-change">less than 1%</a> of global greenhouse gas emissions, <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/co2/country/pakistan">according to Our World in Data</a>, Pakistan is bearing some of the worst effects of climate change.</p><p>"We are suffering from it, but it is not our fault at all," Sharif told reporters Tuesday.</p><p>Pakistan ranked among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change in the 2021 <a href="https://www.germanwatch.org/en/19777">Global Climate Risk Index</a> compiled by Germanwatch, an environmental think tank.</p><div type="image" title="Brick kiln workers carry their belongings and move following flash flood in Hyderabad southern Sindh province Pakistan, August 30, 2022." height="1944" width="2896" msid="93913422" hostid="261" sizebytes="332170"></div><p>Guterres called South Asia a "climate crisis hotspot," where people were <a href="https://press.un.org/en/2022/sgsm21429.doc.htm">15 times more likely</a> to die from climate impacts than those living elsewhere. </p><p>"As we continue to see more and more extreme weather events around the world, it is outrageous that climate action is being put on the back burner as global emissions of greenhouse gasses are still rising, putting all of us — everywhere —in growing danger," Guterres said in the <a href="https://twitter.com/antonioguterres/status/1564556094680227841?s=20&amp;t=qsHdbX6KfBkS5JI9pG8fFw">video statement</a> Tuesday.</p><p>"Let's stop sleepwalking towards the destruction of our planet by climate change," he said, adding, "Today, it's Pakistan. Tomorrow, it could be your country."</p>

Deadly floods in Pakistan highlight a troubling problem. It's at the center of the climate crisis, but barely contributes to global emissions.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US <keyword id="11971156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fish" source="Orion">Fish</keyword> and Wildlife Service proposed declaring 23 species extinct this week.</li><li>The species include <keyword id="11930900" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="birds" source="Orion">birds</keyword>, fish, mussels, and 11 species from Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.</li><li>Because the <keyword id="11897851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="animals" source="Orion">animals</keyword> have been endangered for so long, there are very few photos of them.</li></ul><p>Federal wildlife officials gave up on being able to save more than two dozen species this week, and declared 22 animals and one plant to be extinct. </p><p>On Wednesday, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed removing 23 species from the <keyword id="12133600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="endangered-species" source="Orion">endangered species</keyword> list. The last confirmed sighting of the Kauai nukupuu bird, found in Hawaii, for example, was in 1899.</p><p>The FWS's efforts have largely been successful at preventing the extinction of more than 99% of the species on the endangered list. Overall, 54 species have been removed from the list because they were recovered, and 56 were downlisted from endangered (on the verge of extinction) to threatened (likely to become endangered).</p><p>The announcement kicks off a 60-day comment period, during which the public can send evidence that suggests the species may still be around. The designations are expected to be finalized by the end of the year. </p><p>Species on the proposed extinction list include a bat and a variety of birds, freshwater fish, and mussels, as well as 11 species from Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.</p><p>Because the species were so rare for so long, few pictures of them exist. Rare photos show some of the birds, fish, and mollusks added to the extinction list this week

<ul class="summary-list"><li>World leaders from across the globe flew into New York City to attend the <keyword id="11896449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="united-nations" source="Orion">United Nations</keyword> General Assembly.</li><li>Their aircraft, however, weren't allowed to stay at New York City's airports due to a long-standing rule. </li><li>Boris Johnson took Amtrak's Acela from New York to Washington, DC while his plane was parked in Virginia. </li></ul><p>New York City in September is a hotspot for world leaders as the United Nations holds its annual General Assembly. <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate change</keyword> is a key topic at this year's conference, with leaders including President Joe Biden announcing additional investments in <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/us-seeks-double-climate-change-aid-developing-nations-biden-2021-09-21/">climate finance for developing countries</a>. </p><p>But while leaders talk about commitments to climate change on the world stage, their government planes are burning extra jet fuel by <keyword id="11896631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flying" source="Orion">flying</keyword> empty to airports across the Northeast just to park during the event. </p><p>New York's JFK International Airport is the preferred gateway to the UN for many visiting countries due to its proximity to Manhattan. A long-standing rule of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, however, restricts those aircraft from staying at JFK while their passengers head to the UN. </p><p>Foreign military and state aircraft are barred from staying at Port Authority airports overnight due to traffic and space constraints, a spokesperson confirmed to Insider. After they've landed at a Port airport, those aircraft have two hours to depart for another airport where they'll park while in the US.</p><p>Commercial airports under the Port's purview also include LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International. </p><p>New York Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, around 60 miles north of the UN, is a popular parking spot for foreign aircraft given its large runway and parking availability for large aircraft. </p><p>Flight tracking data shows that aircraft staying in Newburgh this year included a <a href="https://flightaware.com/live/flight/TRK1/history/20210920/0030Z/KJFK/KSWF">Boeing Business Jet 747-8i</a> of the Turkish government, <a href="https://flightaware.com/live/flight/IAM3107/history/20210920/2305Z/KJFK/KSWF">Airbus A319</a> of the Italian government, and <a href="https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BBC1902/history/20210920/0129Z/KJFK/KSWF">Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner</a> of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, among many others.</p><div type="image" title="Turkish government Boeing Business Jet 747-8i" height="1388" width="1851" msid="86507667" hostid="261"></div><p>Aircraft will <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> as far as Washington, DC, nearly 200 nautical miles south of New York, just for a parking spot. </p><p>Airports closer to New York including Farmingdale Republic Airport and Long Island MacArthur Airport are favorites of countries with smaller diplomatic aircraft. But larger aircraft, such as a Boeing 747, cannot use them or other nearby airports such as New Jersey's Teterboro Airport and White Plains, New York's Westchester County Airport due to runway constraints. </p><p>Foreign governments and militaries can request exemptions to the rule outside of UN week, the Port spokesperson told Insider, and an airport's general manager may grant it if traffic levels allow. Newburgh is a Port facility and exemptions are often made because of the airport's low traffic levels. </p><p>But during UN week, the <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword> equivalent of tipping the valet extra to "keep it nearby" is considered bribery. Marlene Mizzi, a former assistant airport deputy supervisor at JFK, pleaded guilty in 2019 to accepting "benefits" for letting aircraft stay overnight during a session of the General Assembly.</p><p>Mizzi admitted to receiving " free limousine rides, meals, and gifts" in return for letting a Qatar state aircraft stay overnight in 2014, according to <a href="https://ag.ny.gov/press-release/2019/attorney-general-james-and-port-authority-inspector-general-nestor-announce">New York Attorney General Letitia James</a>.</p><h2>How the rule causes headaches for multi-stop US visits</h2><p>UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson took to America's high-speed Amtrak Acela train to visit the White House while in the US. But Johnson's plane also made the trip to the nation's capital. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-boris-force-one-paint-job-for-government-vip-jet-2020-6">UK version of Air Force One</a> flew from <a href="https://flightaware.com/live/flight/ZZ336/history/20210920/0042Z/KJFK/KIAD">New York to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia</a> after dropping off Johnson on September 19. Had Johnson chose to fly between New York and Washington, his plane would have had to fly back to New York to pick him up, then fly back to Virginia to park. </p><p>And after Johnson's visit, the plane would have had to fly him back to New York, only to fly back to Virginia to park for the rest of the prime minister's UN visit, and then fly back to New York for the return flight to London. </p><div type="image" title="Boris Johnson arriving in New York for the United Nations General Assembly - UK Air Force One" height="2333" width="3111" msid="86507668" hostid="261"></div><p>A 2018 report from the <a href="https://theicct.org/publications/co2-emissions-commercial-aviation-2018">International Council on Clean Transportation</a>, an independent non-profit organization, found that aviation contributed to 2.4% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Even with the industry working towards a greener future, empty repositioning flights are still incredibly common for all aircraft operates. </p><p>The COVID-19 pandemic gave New York skies a reprieve as the General Assembly went virtual in 2020. But despite fears of the Delta variant, this year's in-person session pressed on and foreign leaders were ready to adopt "<a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-09-07-mn-666-story.html">have plane, will travel</a>."</p>

While world leaders are at the UN talking climate change, their private jets are often forced to fly and park hundreds of miles away

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In the last year, I've found myself face-to-face with a hurricane and two <keyword id="11898861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wildfires" source="Orion">wildfires</keyword>.</li><li>This is what our planet is like now: The effects of <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword> are inescapable, no matter where you live.</li><li>Any extreme weather event can have impacts far from its epicenter. </li></ul><p>While the remnants of <keyword id="11971645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hurricane-ida" source="Orion">Hurricane Ida</keyword> tore through New York City on Wednesday, my phone lit up as concerned friends asked if I was safe. Thankfully, no floodwater entered my Manhattan apartment building - but I thought seriously about the question.</p><p>Last year, I was evacuated not once, but twice from my family home in Southern California due to wildfires. I was living there at the time, so I prepared to say goodbye to the structure I had known for almost 30 years as a trail of flames on the hillside inched ominously in my direction. The sooty air burned my eyes. I could smell the smoke through my three-layer mask. </p><p>This is what it's like now: No matter what part of a coast you're on or which state you live in, the effects of climate change are inescapable. Phrases like "flood zone" or "fire territory" are becoming somewhat meaningless, since it's no longer the case that flooding occurs exclusively in coast-heavy states like Florida or that wildfire smoke affects only people in the West.</p><p>This summer in particular has demonstrated what climate scientists have warned about for decades: There's no such thing as a local disaster. Extreme weather events are interconnected. </p><p>Hurricane Ida is the obvious recent example: It strengthened in the Gulf and made landfall in New Orleans, yet its devastating power crippled New York three days later. Then there are the wildfires in California and Oregon, which have darkened skies and led to air-quality warnings in New York City and Boston. Even <keyword id="11905238" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="arctic" source="Orion">Arctic</keyword> warming affects weather in the US: A <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abi9167">study</a> published Friday found that this accelerated warming makes winters more extreme in North America - and even likely played a role in the cold front that toppled Texas's energy grid in February.</p><p>The situation will get worse. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-impacts-to-last-millennia-ipcc-report-2021-8">recent report</a> from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-ipcc-report-temperature-rise-20-years-15-degrees-2021-8">warming will continue</a> to some extent over the next two to three decades, regardless of how much emissions drop. Some consequences of human-driven emissions - such as rising seas, disappearing glaciers, extreme heat, <keyword id="48088" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="floods" source="Orion">floods</keyword>, drought, and tropical storms - are already <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-impacts-to-last-millennia-ipcc-report-2021-8">irreversible for centuries to millennia</a>. </p><p>"Things that used to be super rare are going to happen more commonly," Genevieve Guenther, director of the volunteer organization End Climate Silence, told me. "Natural disasters are not going to happen and then fade from historical memory. They're going to be relentless and they're going to be global."</p><h2>The ripple effects of climate change aren't always visible</h2><div type="image" title="Hurricane Ida, New Orleans" height="1184" width="1776" msid="85924612" hostid="261"></div><p>We've all heard the warnings about climate change "hotspots." Miami could be underwater by the end of the century if sea levels rise at least 10 feet. More than a million California homes are in high-risk fire areas. And a hurricane is likely to strike within 50 nautical miles of New Orleans once every seven years.</p><p>But it's tempting for people who don't live in these locations to dismiss the threats. </p><p>Until recently, Guenther said, climate disasters "were understood, even by insurance agencies, as acts of God that came out of nowhere and then went away again."</p><p>When I spoke to her on Friday, a chunk of her ceiling had recently caved in from Ida. She'd meant to fix a leak before the storm, she said, but never got around to it. Even to climate activist, she added, it was an important lesson: Prepare for extreme weather. Don't think you have the luxury to procrastinate.</p><p>And don't expect a major weather event to stay confined to one area. Ida may have flooded New Orleans and cut its power, but it has killed more than 60 people across eight states - Alabama, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. </p><p>What's more, not all damage from these events will be visible right away. Floods from hurricanes, for example, can promote mold growth inside homes and release chemicals into the air, water, and soil, causing spikes in air pollution and potentially exposing people to contaminated food and drinking water. Together, these hazards can <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7967478/">lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases</a> among residents of affected areas, as well as rescue and repair workers.</p><h2>Fire and drought have far-reaching effects, too</h2><div type="image" title="Dixie Fire in California." height="1080" width="1920" msid="85924615" hostid="261"></div><p>The effects of fires are similarly widespread: Smoke can rise high into the atmosphere, where winds may carry it for thousands of miles, effectively blanketing entire continents. That smoke fills the air with microscopic particles that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6015400/">have been linked</a> to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-heart-failure">heart failure</a>, and premature death.</p><p>In early August, Salt Lake City, Utah, had the worst air quality of any major city in the world - more than three times the federal health standard.
