If investors support such businesses, and consumers pick such products, our carbon footprint can be lesser,” explains Bhumi. “Every day is Earth Day. This is our only home, there is no alternative, and there is no plan B! As storms and other natural disasters become more destructive, home insurance providers are raising rates or pulling out of certain states altogether, according to insurance company Insurify.According to Holden Lewis, a home insurance expert at NerdWallet, climate change is hitting states such as California, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska the hardest — and wildly disrupting these states' home insurance markets.If you're looking to purchase a house in these high-risk markets, here's what you need to know about rapidly rising home insurance rates.<h2 id="4ca151ec-b6df-44db-821b-3b925503bc08">How to navigate the insurance landscape when moving</h2>As climate change exacerbates the frequency and severity of natural disasters, homes are at higher risk of damage. Insurance companies in turn are raising prices to cover the higher costs of covering claims and reinsurance, or insurance for insurance companies.According to financial data firm Bankrate, the national average cost of home insurance is $2,285 a year for up to $300,000 of dwelling coverage. But in high climate-risk states such as Nebraska, Florida, and Oklahoma, average annual premiums range from $4,835 to $5,655.It might seem obvious, one step homebuyers can take to avoid surprises is consider home insurance costs early in the homebuying process, Lewis said. As insurance premiums increase, they can materially impact your monthly housing payments and push a home out of your affordability zone.Prospective buyers shopping for homes in a new state are especially prone to insurance sticker shock, according to Lewis. For example, if you're thinking of moving from Ohio to Texas, you might not be aware that the average homeowners insurance rate in cyclone-prone Texas is $3,916 a year — $2,600 more than in Ohio, Lewis pointed out.Still, climate-risk states remain popular. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uhaul.com/Articles/About/U-Haul-Announces-Top-Growth-States-Of-2023-30660/">U-Haul</a>, Texas and Florida received the highest influx of new residents in 2023.Many of these newcomers might not have done their homework on the home insurance market before moving to the state, according to Stephanie L., homeowner and lifelong Florida resident who asked not to use her full last name for privacy reasons.There's a lack of consumer awareness of the financial risk extreme weather brings, in Stephanie's opinion. "If you purchase a beautiful home on a river, you have to understand that with the way storms come in, you could be at risk," Stephanie told Business Insider in an interview.Even within climate-risk states, you can minimize your home's exposure to extreme weather and bring down insurance premiums by researching the local neighborhood.When Stephanie bought her house, she picked a location in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, which has less exposure to hurricane risk than other areas of the Sunshine state."We definitely looked for high and dry, not in a flood zone, and not in a hurricane evacuation zone," Stephanie said.Indeed, Jacksonville home insurance premiums are significantly lower than Florida's state average of $5,527, with homeowners paying an average of $2,705 a year for insurance according to Bankrate.Next, when it comes by a natural disaster, you want to ensure that the insurance policy can fully cover rebuilding costs. Many policies offer dwelling coverage limits in line with the market value of the house, but that's not always sufficient coverage, according to Lewis."The market value of the house the day before a fire or storm might be less than the actual cost to rebuild it to current building codes," Lewis said.For prospective homebuyers, Lewis recommends clarifying the dwelling coverage limit with the insurance agent and shopping around for available policies.Also important to note is that flood coverage often isn't included in standard homeowners insurance policies. This is an important consideration if you're looking to buy a house in an area prone to hurricanes."If water is rising, say from a river, or storm surge, then a standard homeowners policy will not cover that damage," Lewis said.Stephanie purchased flood insurance in addition to her regular homeowners insurance when she purchased a home."I also have a separate flood policy even though I'm not in a floodplain," she said. "When you're not in a flood zone, flood insurance is pretty affordable."Although Stephanie isn't at high risk for flooding, she still wants to be prepared for the worst. It's not a bad idea to go the extra mile and purchase extra insurance when it comes to buying a home in Florida, even if you're not directly in a flood zone.In addition to hurricane-prone Gulf Coast states, regions like western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southern Virginia are flooding hotspots, according to Lewis.Lastly, homeowners also should consider how inflation will drive up home insurance costs, especially as concerns over inflation loom high in today's economy. An inflationary environment will increase the cost of building materials and construction, Lewis pointed out.As a result, it may be a good idea to review your coverage every year or two to evaluate the status of your coverage, Lewis said."Talk to the agent, maybe even talk to a general contractor just to find out, 'Hey, am I still covered? Do I still have enough coverage to pay to rebuild this home?'" By engaging the public in a tangible way, art can create a sense of urgency, prompt a collective call to action, and motivate a reconnection with the planet.<h2>Design can encourage the use of sustainable materials</h2>Fashion designers are <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/sustainable-business/green-is-new-black-fashion-sector-fast-forwards-sustainability-trend-2023-03-02/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">starting to embrace</a> sustainable and green materials in their work, moving away from harmful chemicals and dyes by weaving sustainability into the production process — from sourcing fabric to manufacturing the garments to extending the life cycle of clothes when they leave the shelves.This shift reduces the environmental footprint of the fashion industry and shows what's possible with alternative products. For example, Pangaia, a clothing and materials-science company, is turning away from harmful polyesters, which contribute to textile waste. The brand makes its sweatsuits out of 20% lyocell SeaCell, or seaweed fiber, and 80% organic cotton. It also uses a biowicking treatment made from microalgae, a dye made from inedible fruit and vegetable waste. That culture included "physical assaults and attacks by students of students," the lawsuit says.Kuch died by suicide two days after she was attacked. Video of the assault had been posted to social media. Four teens have been charged in connection to the incident.The teen's family says school district officials "knew or should have known" that attacks within their schools, specifically Central Regional High School, "were being recorded and posted to various social media sites by other students, contrary to School Board policy."The lawsuit, which names the Central Board of Education, the Central Regional High School's principal and other school officials as defendants, alleges negligence and accuses them of failing to protect Kuch."It is the defendants' job to provide a safe and secure environment for the students at Central Regional High School," Kuch family attorney William Krais said in a statement.Krais said the defendants "catastrophically failed Adriana, leading to the emotional distress, humiliation, and embarrassment that ultimately caused her to take her own life. It's high time the school and those involved are held accountable for their actions."Central Regional School District superintendent Michelle CarneyRay-Yoder told Business Insider in an email Monday that the district had not been served with a copy of the lawsuit and "has not yet had an opportunity to review it.""Accordingly, we cannot comment at this time. Further, since this would be a matter involving litigation, the Board will be limited in what it can comment on publicly," CarneyRay-Yoder said.The lawsuit also accused the school's former superintendent, who is also named as a defendant, of defamation and violating the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act over "egregiously false statements" made to reporters in the wake of Kuch's death about her and her family.The lawsuit says that on the day of Kuch's funeral, the then-superintendent emailed a reporter, saying that Kuch's mother died by suicide after her father had an affair. In the same email, according to the lawsuit, he also tried to shift blame toward the family for what he called ignoring Kuch's "bad choices" years earlier."The father is very upset and has lost his child so sometimes you just have to eat the shit sandwich," the then-superintendent said to another reporter, according to the lawsuit.Kuch's father, Michael Kuch, said in a statement: "Adriana was the light of our lives, and one year after her horrific and needless death, we are still waiting for justice.""It's clear this school has a serious bullying problem that none of the school administrators care to admit or address. The UK-based runner is known for setting records in longer ultramarathons, including earlier this year when he won <a target="_blank" href="https://www.inov-8.com/us/damian-hall-wins-the-2023-spine-race">the 268-mile Spine Race</a>. In fact, he's flying to fewer races these days to reduce his carbon footprint."This sport is incredible. It's life-changing. But it can also be terrible for the planet," said Hall, who <a target="_blank" href="https://thegreenrunners.com/our-story/">cofounded Green Runners</a>, a group that advocates for a more environmentally aware sport. Founded in 2022, the group has grown to 1,000 members.A lot of sportswear, sneakers, and free T-shirts — many of which are made from oil and gas — get tossed out. So do single-use water cups along the race route. Corporate sponsors can be big polluters trying to "sports wash" their image. Runners fly around the world to the events and produce greenhouse-gas emissions. Travel is "the elephant in the room" that many race organizers are reluctant to confront, Hall said.The Paris Marathon, which attracts 57,000 runners annually, has audited its carbon footprint for years <a target="_blank" href="https://storage-aso.lequipe.fr/ASO/egp/marathon-de-paris/2019-03-28-a-carbon-neutral-marathon.pdf">and in 2019 reported that 94%</a> of emissions are attributed to travel while only 6% are produced by the event logistics. That year, <a target="_blank" href="https://storage-aso.lequipe.fr/ASO/egp/marathon-de-paris/2019-03-28-a-carbon-neutral-marathon.pdf">the marathon was promoted</a> as the first to be "carbon neutral" because it purchased offsets from a Kenya-based project that provided families with baked-clay cook stoves to replace dirtier, wood-burning ones. The marathon is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.schneiderelectricparismarathon.com/en/a-marathon-with-values/recycling">also focused on diverting waste</a> from landfills and donating surplus clothes and food.Similar steps have been taken by the organizers of other large races, including the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon earlier this month. The event had more than 25,000 runners — 2,000 of whom were from other countries. The event purchased carbon offsets to compensate for a portion of its overall emissions and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com/tcs-toronto-waterfront-marathon-earns-evergreen-certification-for-commitment-to-sustainability-and-community-impact/">achieved the highest rating</a> from the Council for Responsible Sport. "Finding a way to reduce that impact without reducing the number of people coming into the race is a huge part of the conversation."No marathon has gone as far as London, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/co2-b2430830.html">is charging a 26 euro climate levy</a> on runners from abroad to fund the marathon's efforts to slash emissions by 2030. And, therefore, it might be mean or selfish or irresponsible for would-be parents to bring children into the world.Nope! Life is a spectacular and astronomically unlikely gift, no matter where or when it happens.But more importantly, despite climate change, et al, the world actually isn't worse than it has ever been. In fact, across most measures that affect the quality of human (if not animal or plant) life—life expectancy, income, health, death by violence, medicine, social awareness, and justice, to name a few — it's getting better all the time.If you want a comprehensive review, Harvard University professor Steven Pinker expounds on many of these trends in a 2018 book called "<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2018/02/harvards-pinker-makes-case-for-human-progress-in-new-book/">The Better Angels of our Nature</a>." And our world is heating up. And many of us still do suffer unduly and kill each other and die too early in tragic ways. There are still too many diseases and conditions that cripple and incapacitate us. Our education and justice systems need work. Our societies are still rife with unfairness and inequality. The oceans are full of plastic. The rainforests and animals are being decimated. There are still wars. And so on.In short, we do still have a lot of pressing problems that we need to solve.But we've always had those. And we always will.Back in the 1960s, when my parents bravely decided to bring me into the world, the fear that was dominating the conversation was nuclear annihilation (arguably worse than climate change). That's still a risk, of course. Fortunately, we've managed to stave it off for the past half-century. Hopefully we can continue to.And, of course, in those days, cigarettes and booze and cars and planes and medicines and other products were routinely killing and maiming us and destroying our lives and wrecking the environment, and our manufacturing processes were a lot less safe than similar ones today. (When I was a kid, it was considered totally responsible parenting to throw your kids in the car with no seatbelts or car seats!)And, yes, over the 57 years that I have been lucky enough to be alive, many of my peers have died far too young, including some who — through no fault of their own — found life too difficult to continue. And, like most families, mine has seen our share of difficult times and tragedies.But I am grateful that my parents stomached their fears and brought me into the world.And I don't know anyone who feels differently.So, yes, worried would-be parents, by all means have children. Life is a gift. Eventually, if they live long enough, your kids will be grateful to you for giving it to them.Also, if you're even thinking about a question like this, it means you care — and, chances are, you'll pass that thoughtfulness and sense of responsibility on to your children.And we need more people like you in the world.

<div type="image" title="A marine research expedition in Antarctica." height="3732" width="5598" msid="102209399" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>The vast majority of the ocean remains unexplored but researchers are racing to change that.</li><li>They believe water-based organisms can advance healthcare and address the climate crisis.</li><li>But balancing science, marine protection, and economic gains is an evolving challenge.</li></ul>The ocean is teeming with <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2023-04-27-oxford-university-joins-largest-ever-ocean-survey-global-effort-save-marine-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uncharted life</a> and most of it remains <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/exploration.html">unexplored</a> — something researchers from academia and private companies are racing to change.That's because unique microorganisms that can survive the deep, dark abyss of the ocean to those that live in shallow waters and hot springs could hold answers to some of the world's most pressing challenges in health and climate. Biodiscovery taps into plants, animals, and microorganisms to look for traits that can be used for innovation in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cosmetic, and other industries. A bevy of organizations are focused on scaling up biodiscovery at sea.A marine discovery in the 1950s led to the creation of Ara-A, the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/org/science/article/pii/S0265056822000356" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first antiviral drug</a>. Around half of clinically approved drugs, including antibiotics and cancer drugs, are based on discoveries made in nature, but only <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/org/science/article/pii/S0265056822000356" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a small percentage</a> of those come from marine ecosystems.Scientists are turning to the ocean in the hope of finding microbes that can help deal with mounting aquaculture waste, eat methane, degrade plastic, and help create biofuels.But the industry faces <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/org/science/article/pii/S0265056822000356" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"chronic underfunding, bottlenecks, and untapped potential"</a> while the ocean itself is under assault from pollution, overfishing, a loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Balancing the pursuit of science, marine protection, and economic gain is an inherent challenge but some organizations are tackling all three. <div type="image" title="Two of the Basecamp Research team taking samples in Azores, Portugal" height="724" width="1086" msid="102209400" hostid="261"></div><h2>Combining biodiscovery with biodiversity mapping</h2>The London-based company Basecamp Research conducts marine expeditions led by scientists working to build a knowledge graph of nature's biodiversity. The startup, which has raised $26 million to date, works with companies looking for enzymes for commercial use and with NGOs or countries that want to map biodiversity.Basecamp also partners with academic institutions and governments, including on a project known as Heritage Malta, which involves divers heading 100 meters underwater to collect sediment samples from around archaeological wreckage sites. The project's end goal is to understand how the microbes are evolving in response to the wreck sites on the seabed while also looking for enzymes for commercial use.Sampling efforts are typically nonintrusive and don't harm the surrounding environment, said Emma Bolton, a marine biologist who has spent time working in Antarctica and is now with Basecamp Research. Sampling involves taking a "minuscule amount of sediment" and only needs to be done once, she said. Samples can also be taken by filtering a few liters of water. Discoveries might yield commercial gains but could also be used to build an argument for the protection, conservation, or restoration of the marine area.<div type="image" title="Heritage Malta diver taking samples." height="1022" width="1600" msid="102209401" hostid="261"></div><h2>Technology is fueling biodiscovery </h2>Once collected, microbial DNA has to be sequenced and analyzed. Scientists sift through databases of digital biological information hoping to make the next big discovery. There is simply too much data to handle, Rob Finn, the coordinator of a European project that catalogs existing marine-microbiome data said. "I sit on 3 billion unique proteins that have come from all sorts of different sources," said Finn of the BlueRemediomics initiative. He is also a team lead at the European Bioinformatics Institute. One of the aims of the 9.3 million euro, or about $10.4 million, project is to make it easier to screen data for useful characteristics for commercialization, with a focus on new ways to reduce waste, increase the reuse of natural products, and improve aquaculture processes. It will connect the dots between single enzymes or genes to look at whole organisms or small communities of organisms for potential uses, Finn said. The explosion of powerful algorithms that can process vast amounts of data has made this kind of work possible.Basecamp Research's data science team is also taking advantage of developments in technology. It uses AI modeling to work out the best proteins and enzymes for specific applications, which can lead to bespoke protein designs for its customers. Winning designs can also be used to train AI systems to model other enzymes and sequences in the hope of making further discoveries. <div type="image" title="Visualisation of proteins in silico, made by Saif Ur-Rehman, Basecamp Research's data engineering team lead." height="1420" width="2440" msid="102209403" hostid="261"></div><h2>The introduction of the High Seas Treaty</h2>A number of companies use public biological data to develop products, but critics argue that traceability is often lacking, leaving the impact of datasets unknown. This raises the issue of biopiracy, where samples have been harvested illegally without fair compensation to the communities and countries that own the land or waters.The UN's Nagoya Protocol, adopted in 2010, addressed biopiracy on land by ensuring that commercial profits of genetic resources like DNA are shared with its origin country. The protocol omitted the high seas, which refers to parts of the seas that are not under territorial control of any specific country. As interest in the ocean gains momentum, so does the push to protect it and ensure discoveries benefit everyone. <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_23_1382" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The High Seas Treaty</a>, which was finalized earlier this year, will regulate the use of physical and digital genetic data found in the deep sea and states that profit is to be shared equally between nations. Basecamp Research's Bolton said any royalties made from its data are shared with location partners, in line with the Nagoya Protocol. For example, it would share profits with a national park that might have enlisted the company's help to conduct a biodiversity survey. Meanwhile, a huge part of BlueRemediomics's funding is devoted to finding ways to balance commercialization with <a href="https://blueremediomics.eu/about-work-packages/work-package-5-improving-access-protection-and-sharing-abs-and-ip-of-marine-genetic-resources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">benefit sharing</a> and to make sure that neither becomes constricted, Finn said. This is particularly important as policy evolves with the ratification of the High Seas Treaty.<div type="image" title="A diver during an expedition in Antarctica." height="3800" width="5067" msid="102209404" hostid="261"></div>The treaty also puts into action an <a href="https://www.cbd.int/article/cop15-final-text-kunming-montreal-gbf-221222" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreement</a> to protect 30% of the high seas by 2030. Currently, <a href="https://marine-conservation.org/30x30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">less than 3%</a> is considered highly protected.This coincides with a race to mine the seafloor for critical materials, often touted as necessary to meet electrification goals. Scientists have <a href="https://easac.eu/news/details/deep-sea-mining-press-release" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed back</a> on the "misleading" narrative that this kind of exploration is needed for a green transition and have warned that mining the deep sea will have damning consequences for marine ecosystems, The conversation has led to increased public awareness of the marine ecosystem's value and a push to understand the ocean, Bolton said. "There is so much more to discover from it."
