When popular smartphone brands like <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> and realme entered the laptop market in India last year, they were expected to shake the existing giants, specifically under the Rs 50,000 category. However, <keyword id="10389950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chip-shortage" source="Orion">chip shortage</keyword> and supply crunch have somewhat dented their plans to make a significant mark to date. According to industry experts, the issue with smartphone makers entering the laptop category is two-fold. The first one is a massive supply crunch in the laptop component market and only big brands are able to get volume and supplies. The other factor is that the traditional players are very strong in the consumer laptop market. Top 3 players control more than 70 per cent of the market and strong portfolio, distribution, and channel reach as well as brand marketing has helped them massively. "New brands can surely make a dent in the consumer laptop market but are challenged by supply issues right now. Watch out for them in 2022 as and when supply situation eases up," Navkendar Singh, Research Director, <keyword id="12376375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="client-devices-ipds" source="Orion">Client Devices &amp; IPDS</keyword>, IDC India told IANS. Dominated by HP Inc, <keyword id="13722" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lenovo" source="Orion">Lenovo</keyword> and Dell, the traditional PC market (inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in India continued to be robust as the shipments grew by 50.5 per cent year-over-year (YoY) in the second quarter (Q2), according to IDC. Notebook PCs continue to hold more than three-fourth share in the overall category and grew 49.9 per cent YoY in 2Q21, reporting a fourth consecutive quarter with over 2 million units. Desktops also indicated a recovery as shipments grew 52.3 per cent YoY after recording the lowest shipments of the decade in 2Q20. According to Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, driven by the pandemic and the associated accelerated pivot to remote work, learn and unwind culture, PCs have been witnessing heightened demand. "Despite the current supply chain constraints, PCs are here to stay in the new never normal. In the run-up to the festive season, established PC market leaders will continue to leverage their brand salience and gain market share," Ram told IANS. "On the other hand, there is a niche market for those new market entrants that are able to differentiate themselves from the competition in terms of features and value. "Alongside, they would need to back it with strong brand messaging to create awareness and recall amongst the target consumers," Ram added. HP maintained its lead in the India PC market with a 33.6 per cent share as its shipments grew 54.2 per cent annually. <keyword id="3346453" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dell-technologies" source="Orion">Dell Technologies</keyword> continued to hold the second position with a 22.1 per cent share and an impressive 86.1 per cent YoY growth in 2Q21. Lenovo maintained the third position with a share of 17.8 per cent in 2Q21. Arvind Suraj, <keyword id="341375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="research-fellow" source="Orion">Research Fellow</keyword>, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), said that there is always a trust issue with new brands. "You won't buy a laptop in 6 or 7 months just like smartphones. In this case, we often go for existing players. Brands like Lenovo, HP, ASUS and Acer have already gained our trust," he said. Chip shortage hits new brands in tough Indian laptop market

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the <keyword id="12134566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget-2022" source="Orion">Union Budget 2022</keyword> announced duty concessions for parts of mobile phones. This is to further boost <keyword id="1235695" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-manufacturing" source="Orion">domestic manufacturing</keyword> of “high growth electronic items” in India. Sitharaman also said that electronic manufacturing has been growing rapidly in the country. “Customs duty rates are being calibrated to provide a graded rate structure, to facilitate domestic manufacturing of wearable devices, hearable devices and electronic smart meters,” she said. Sitharaman added that duty concessions are being given to specific components including “transformer of mobile phone chargers, and camera lens of mobile camera module and certain other such items.” On the duty concessions, Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices &amp; IPDS, IDC India said “While we await specific details on quantum on duty concessions, this is a welcome step. Wearables are seeing stratospheric growth in demand and shall continue to do so in India. As consumers mature into using more tech, other complementary devices like wearables will see growth. Making india competitive in its manufacturing to meet local demand as well as position India as a manuf and export hub for such devices is a good initiative.” With duty concessions and domestic manufacturing boost, prices of electronics are expected to decrease. There has been an increase in prices of electronics, smartphones especially, owing to the ongoing chip shortage and other COVID-19 induced factors. According to the IDC, smartwatches, which can run third-party applications on the device itself, accounted for a 24.5 per cent share in the watch category and Apple continues to lead the smartwatch category with a massive 51 per cent share in 2020. "In India, mainly Watch 3 and Watch 6 led to the growth in 2020. Price reductions on older Apple Watches and the promotional discounts offered by banks and e-tailer channels on Series 5 and Series 6 made the device a popular purchase among consumers in India. According to Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India, the high cost associated with wearable watches is not much of a challenge anymore. "Also, the watch form factor is now seen as more appealing to the consumers, and vendors will leverage this shift by further expanding their watches portfolio in coming quarters," he added. <keyword id="6439913" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="counterpoint-research">Counterpoint Research</keyword> said that Apple Watch Series 6 and SE did well globally, shipping 12.9 million units and accounting for 40 per cent market share in Q4. "In a year where annual growth inched forward at only 1.5 per cent, Apple maintained its solid number one position and increased its market share by 6 per cent, helping shift the overall market closer to the premium segment," it said. Apple Watch garners 51% global market share, India sweet spot, says report

In yet another fillip to the Make in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and <keyword id="1235695" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-manufacturing">domestic manufacturing</keyword> dream of the Indian government, <keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> said on Tuesday that its flagship and environment-friendly <keyword id="8291932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone-12">iPhone 12</keyword> smartphone will soon be produced in India for the local customers. The news comes at a time when the iPhone 12 series has received stupendous response in the country. "We are proud to be starting <keyword id="22637" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="production">production</keyword> of iPhone 12 in India for our local customers," Apple told IANS in a statement. "Apple is dedicated to making the best products and services in the world to delight our customers," the company added. Despite arriving in October, the iPhone 12 contributed significantly towards the rise of Apple in the festive quarter (October-December period) in the country, according to market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR). Apple registered over 60 per cent growth (on-year) in its India business in the full year 2020 while for the festive quarter, the growth was an impressive 100 per cent (YoY) and iPhone 12 contributed significantly towards it. "With its recent market gains in India, Apple is positioned for aggressive growth in the upcoming quarters. The local assembly of iPhone 12 in India will give a further fillip to its Apple's prospects," said Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, told IANS. Riding on the stellar performance of iPhone 11, XR and then iPhone 12, Apple for the first time doubled its smartphone market share in India to nearly 4 per cent in the festive quarter of 2020. Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with iPhone SE. Today, Apple manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in India including XR, iPhone 11, and now iPhone 12. According to Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices &amp; IPDS, IDC India, Apple had a very good 2020 for iPhone shipments, having almost doubled it over 2019. "Now with plans to manufacture iPhone 12 in India, this will certainly help Apple in continuing last year's momentum in 2021 as well," Singh told IANS. For the first time, iPhone 12 models utilise 100 per cent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, including the new camera, Taptic Engine, and MagSafe, as well as Apple's MagSafe accessories. Apple's suppliers in India are now utilising solar and wind energy for their needs. iPhone 12 comes with 5G technology, features the fastest A14 Bionic chip, edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays, and a sophisticated flat-edge design with Ceramic Shield front cover, offering four times better drop performance. "Apple continues its stellar run in the India smartphone market, gaining strength on the back of increased local manufacturing and strong marketing initiatives. Apple to soon start production of iPhone 12 in India

New Delhi, Feb 7 () About 152.5 million smartphones were shipped in India in 2019 registering a "modest" 8 per cent growth over last year, positioning the country as the second-largest smartphone market after China, research firm IDC said on Friday. For 2020, IDC said the Indian smartphone market is expected to see "modest single-digit growth" in the year. According to the IDC data, the overall mobile phone market, with annual shipments of 282.9 million units, declined 12.3 per cent year-on-year in 2019 due to fewer 4G feature phones. Xiaomi registered annual shipments of 43.6 million units in 2019, the highest-ever smartphone shipments made by any brand in a year, with a growth of 9.2 per cent y-o-y and cornered 28.6 per cent market share. Samsung followed in the tally with 20.3 per cent share, vivo (15.6 per cent), Oppo (10.7 per cent) and realme (10.6 per cent). A total of 36.9 million smartphone units were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2019, registering 5.5 per cent year-on-year growth, but a 20.8 per cent sequential decline. In the December quarter, Xiaomi registered a 15.9 per cent y-o-y growth and had 29 per cent share, followed by vivo (18.8 per cent), Samsung (15.5 per cent), Oppo (13 per cent) and realme (12.8 per cent). "This is an extremely exhilarating moment for us at Xiaomi India, as we become the leader in the overall mobile phone market across smartphones and feature phones. It has helped us come closer to our mission of providing innovation for all, and Q4 witnessed several people adopting the smartphone," Xiaomi Vice-President and India Managing Director Manu Jain said. He added that the company is committed to gaining users' sustained trust and appreciation through constant innovation across products, business models and infrastructure. "IDC expects India's smartphone market to see modest single-digit growth in 2020 as well," IDC India Research Director (Client Devices and IPDS) Navkendar Singh said. He added that as organic growth becomes challenging with increasing replacement cycles, it is imperative for the smartphone ecosystem to really put its energy and focus on enabling migration of the massive feature phone user base in India. This needs to be done in addition to continuing to offer compelling propositions at the mid-premium segment to boost faster upgrades, he said. "During the year, we will see launches with newer concepts like under-display cameras, gaming-centric features, and higher refresh rate screens clubbed with efforts by the brands to open new revenue areas like OS monetisation and financing services etc," he added. IDC said the year 2019 also witnessed longer inventory cycles in the offline channel as online exclusive models held back offline sales, resulting in a meagre 1.6 per cent annual growth in the offline channel. "The online growth momentum continued through the year with a record share of 41.7 per cent in 2019, growing by 18.4 per cent y-o-y annually due to deep discounts, cashback offers, buyback/exchange schemes, and complete protection offers clubbed with attractive financing schemes like no-cost EMIs across major model line-ups and brands," IDC India Associate Research Manager (Client Devices) Upasana Joshi said. In 2019, the average selling prices (ASPs) of smartphones rose 2.8 per cent y-o-y to USD 163 (about Rs 11,600). The sub-USD 200 segment still accounted for 79 per cent of the market. The mid-range segment of USD 200-500 accounted for the strongest annual growth of 55.2 per cent and accounted for 19.3 per cent of the overall smartphone market. The mid-premium (USD 300-500) segment was led by vivo with 28 per cent share, followed by OnePlus at 20.2 per cent. In the premium (USD 500 and above) segment, Apple surpassed Samsung for the leadership position with a share of 47.4 per cent in 2019, driven by aggressive price drops on previous generation models, offers, strong e-tailer sales momentum, and a lower iPhone 11 launch price compared to the iPhone XR, IDC said. The feature phone segment continued to decline y-o-y by 21.1 per cent with shipments of 30.1 million units in the fourth quarter. Total mobile phone shipments also up Along with recording a growth of almost 10% in the smartphones category, the Indian market also witnessed a growth of 7.6% in the total mobile phone shipments in the country, which also includes feature phones. IDC estimates that overall, 69.3 mobile phones were shipped in Q2 2019. This means that 32.4 million units out of these were feature phones, while the remaining 36.9 million units were smartphones. While IDC has not given a detailed breakdown of the feature phone market share, it is possible that HMD Global’s Nokia and Reliance Jio’s JioPhone contributed to this figure significantly. Market consolidation on the cards IDC also reports smaller smartphone makers were the biggest losers in Q2 2019, registering a decline of almost 40% in terms of shipments. The research house suggests that troubles could continue to mount for these companies as the market could witness a consolidation. "India smartphone market will continue its growth trajectory in the second half of 2019, but the consolidation of top few brands will continue. This will make it much more challenging for smaller players to find niches of growth," IDC India Research Director (Client Devices and IPDS) Navkendar Singh said.
