A total of 434 Indian cities were surveyed to get the results.<br />

So, Business Insider asked more than 3,000 people who read our fast-food coverage which chains they believe have the cleanest restaurants.</p><p>To avoid penalizing smaller regional chains, we crunched the numbers to create a score based on the percentage of people who said they visited a chain in the last six months and who said the brand had the cleanest restaurants. In the case of most chains - including McDonald's, Burger King, and Subway - fewer than 10% of respondents said that they believed the brand had the cleanest restaurants in the industry. </p><p>However, a handful of chains stood out. Here are the eight fast-food chains with the cleanest restaurants in the industry, according to customers. </p>

A report by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cse&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Centre for Science and Environment</a> (CSE) has stated Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji and Mysuru are the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cleanest+cities+in+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cleanest cities in India</a>.<br />

The survey-‘Not in my backyard’-, which is based on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=waste+management&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">solid waste management</a> practises in towns in India, placed Delhi at the "bottom of the heap".<br />
<br /> "Alappuzha, Panaji and Mysuru are three of the <keyword id="3487316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cleanest-cities-in-India">cleanest cities in India</keyword>, with municipal waste management systems that actually work. CSE rated Indian cities on their management of solid waste - metros like Delhi feature at the bottom of the heap," a latest rating by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said.<br />

"This book started as a survey, we wanted to simply know which city is India's cleanest. We knew that once we found out which is the cleanest, we would also find out what makes it so. This would give us the answers for future policy," said CSE Director General Sunita Narain.<br />
<br />
Noting that the last survey to understand quantity and composition of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=garbage&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">garbage</a> was done over a decade ago, CSE said that the methodology used to calculate waste generated is to simply extrapolate an assumed quantity estimate with the population.<br />
<br />
Referring to the Department of Economic Affairs position paper on solid waste management of 2009, CSE said that urban India was already producing some 80,000 MT of waste a day.<br />
<br />
It projected that by 2047, India would be producing 260 million tonnes of waste annually needing over 1,400 sq km of landfills which is an area equal to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai put together, CSE said referring to the paper.<br />
<br />
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) estimates, over 90 per cent of Indian cities with a functional collection system dispose of their waste in landfills, CSE said. <br />

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>On Monday, President Trump tweeted out a map and said "America: the Cleanest Air in the World - BY FAR!"</strong></li><li><strong>But the map only shows us an estimate of how much very fine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/air-quality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">particulate pollution is in the air</a>, which can come from gas emissions and exhaust, but also cooking fires, wood burning, and even dust storms.</strong></li><li><strong>It's not a surprise that the US has less of these particles floating around than some developing countries with fewer environmental regulations and more open cookfires, but it doesn't mean the US has the cleanest air.</strong></li></ul><p>On Monday, President Trump tweeted out a map, exclaiming that American air is the best air by far. That's not exactly true.</p><p>The map, grabbed from a World Health Organization <a href="http://www.who.int/airpollution/data/AAP_exposure_Apr2018_final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report out earlier this year</a>, is an estimate of how much ultra-fine particulate matter (PM) people are breathing in around the world. This kind of particulate matter is only one component of air pollution.</p><p>The map is tracking things like dust and other tiny particles floating around that are smaller than two and a half microns wide (what's sometimes referred to as "PM 2.5" pollution.) These super-fine particles are 30 times skinnier than a strand of human hair. Because they're so small, they can <a href="https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/indoors/air/pmq_a.htm">easily travel into the lungs</a>&#xa0;- a serious problem for people who already have breathing and heart issues. Heavy exposure over time can lead to reduced lung function and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-air-pollution-does-to-your-body-and-brain-2018-8">even death</a>.</p><p>Common sources of these pollutants include emissions from cars and other vehicles, as well as heating oil, coal, secondhand smoke, chemicals wafting from power plants, smoke from cooking, and even natural sources like forest fires.&#xa0;When the air is hazy, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-air-pollution-does-to-your-body-and-brain-2018-8">breathing it in can have dangerous, long-term</a> effects on the brain.</p><p>Air pollution expert Gabriele Pfister, the deputy director at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling Lab, told Business Insider that using the map to point out how crystal-clean US air may be is misleading, at best.&#xa0;</p><p>"America doesn't have the cleanest air in the world just because it's white on this map," she said, adding that it's no surprise that we have fewer PM 2.5 pollutants than some developing countries where people still cook over open flames and burn down forests for fuel.</p><p>According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), aggregate emissions of six of the most common air pollutants have dropped 73% since 1970, when the agency<a href="https://www.epa.gov/clean-air-act-overview/evolution-clean-air-act">&#xa0;got serious</a> about cleaning up the air.&#xa0;</p><p>But the work isn't done. In 2014, the EPA estimated that between <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2014-05/documents/huff-particle.pdf">50,000 and 120,000 people</a> in the US die prematurely because of bad air. The agency also <a href="https://www.epa.gov/air-trends/air-quality-national-summary">notes on its website</a> that "d<span>espite great progress in air quality improvement, approximately 111 million people nationwide lived in counties with pollution levels above the primary&#xa0;</span><span>U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standards in 2017."&#xa0;</span></p><p>Check out this EPA map of counties that don't meet the Clean Air Act standards:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"PM 2.5 is one component of air pollution,"&#xa0;Pfister said.&#xa0;"If you look at ozone pollution, you will actually see that the US has quite a bit more ozone pollution than many regions in the developing world... that has to do with the ozone chemistry."</p><p>She worries about the air she breathes in Colorado, as <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2018/10/23/residents-sue-broomfield-drilling/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more oil and gas operations open up</a> near schools, hospitals, and people's homes, hospitals.</p><p>"Specifically in the western US, we have leveled off. We are not clean," she said.</p><p>In terms of PM 2.5 pollution, the country with the world's cleanest air <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-least-toxic-countries-pollution-environment-2017-2#-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is New Zealand</a>, while the US ranks seventh on the list. To avoid penalizing Chick-fil-A and other smaller chains, we only considered responses from people who said they visited a chain in the last six months <em>and</em> who said the brand was the best in a category. </p><p>In-N-Out regularly snagged the No. 2 spot in most categories, including best food and cleanest restaurants. But, Chick-fil-A's dominance is clear. </p><p>Why is Chick-fil-A thriving in a way other chains cannot imitate? </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>One thing that sets Chick-fil-A apart from rivals is that franchisees are only allowed to open a single location.</p><p>They don't have to pay much - unlike other chains - but the process of getting approved is extremely drawn-out and difficult. Once these franchisees have fought to be a part of the system, they are hands-on in making sure their locations are clean and offering top-notch service, which helps explain Chick-fil-A's high scores. </p><p>This model and other aspects of Chick-fil-A's business have helped the chain become one of the most successful in fast food. </p><p>The chain is the third largest in the US by sales, growing revenue by 16.7% in 2018 to reach nearly $10.5 billion, according to <a href="https://www.nrn.com/data-research/top-200-restaurants">Nation's Restaurant News.</a> Over the past decade, it has nearly tripled its annual sales.</p>

Chick-fil-A dominates fast-food rankings, from cleanest locations to best food

It's found </span><span>in soot, smoke, and dust. When it lodges in the lungs, it can cause long-term health problems like asthma and chronic lung disease.</span></p><p>While we typically tend to focus on the places that are the least healthy, here's a list of the most healthy.</p><p>Countries are ranked according to their number of clean cities, <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs313/en/">using data from the WHO</a>. </p>
