The rural district is home to several universities including Colgate University, Binghamton University, Hamilton College, and Utica College.The district, which President Donald Trump won in 2018 by 15 points, is one of 30 House districts in which Trump won but is represented in office by a Democrat.<h2>The money race</h2>Brindisi has substantially outraised and outspent Tenney, <a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/races/summary?cycle=2020&amp;id=NY22&amp;spec=Np;spec=N">according to the Center for Responsive Politics</a> and Federal Election Commission filings. In Virginia, he backed first-timer Glenn Youngkin in May 2021 on the day after the businessman secured the GOP gubernatorial nomination en route to winning an off-year election that has Republicans optimistic about their mid-term chances in 2022. But two Trump-backed candidates have also fizzled out. House GOP candidate Susan Wright lost her bid for a congressional seat in Texas, while Senate hopeful Sean Parnell had to pull out of his race to win the GOP nomination in Pennsylvania after messy divorce proceedings overshadowed his campaign. Trump hasn't yet weighed in again on the Keystone State primary set for May 17, which includes a former ambassador from his administration, Carla Sands, hedge fund CEO David McCormick (who is married to former Trump aide Dina Powell), and Mehmet Oz, the TV celebrity who also has Trump ties.<h2>Bedminster, Mar-a-Lago visits</h2>Like much of Trump's political career, the process for securing an endorsement has been chaotic. Some political contenders have tried to win the ex-president's backing through unsolicited trips to Trump's private clubs in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-bedminster-neighbors-describe-life-near-the-former-president-2021-9">New Jersey</a> and Florida. Indeed, spending money at his resorts is one way to get Trump's attention, and an RNC official told Insider they knew of multiple New Englanders who've flocked to Mar-a-Lago this year, uninvited, hoping to bump into Trump or an immediate family member in order to lobby for a thumbs-up photo-op and cookie-cutter blast on his <a href="https://www.donaldjtrump.com/news">sporadic post-presidential news feed</a>. Others have hired Trumpworld alumni like ex-campaign advisor Corey Lewandowski, former spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway, and prospective daughter-in-law Kimberly Guilfoyle as campaign consultants in the hopes of scoring personal introductions. Still, some Republicans wonder if Trump's stamp of approval still packs the same punch. "Trump endorsements may have been the be-all-end-all a while ago, but I don't think they are anymore," one Republican National Committee member told Insider. The RNC official said any inkling of a pay-to-play scheme devalues the whole deal. As does backing multiple candidates in the same race, as Trump has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-mulls-multiple-endorsements-in-single-mid-term-races-politico-2022-1">considered doing</a> in order to boost his win ratio. "It wasn't a very good machine to start with," the RNC official said of Trump's endorsement project.

Trump is on an endorsement spree and has now put his MAGA stamp on more than 100 political candidates since leaving the White House

Several Democratic lawmakers say they have received threats following the shooting at a Republican baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/congressman-scalise-reportedly-shot-2017-6">was shot by 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson</a> during an early-morning practice for a congressional baseball game. Along with Scalise, four other people were injured in the shooting. Hodgkinson was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/james-hodgkinson-steve-scalise-shooter-trump-2017-6">a fierce Bernie Sanders supporter</a> and called President Donald Trump a "traitor," but his exact motive for the shooting has not been established.As Democratic members of Congress were getting briefed on the developing situation, some have gotten calls saying "you guys are next," Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragan of California <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/members-of-congress-say-they-received-threats-before-and?utm_term=.ookEqlXOm#.er80ozADb">told Buzzfeed News</a>.Barragan said that several Democratic lawmakers also got calls on their personal cell phones, including one to a lawmaker who was not a member of their party's baseball team. Democratic congressmen say they are getting calls saying 'you guys are next'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355838" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york">New York</keyword> held presidential and congressional primaries the week of June 23. </li><li>There are competitive Democratic primaries still yet to be called, including in New York's 15th district, an open seat, and the race in the 12th district between Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Suraj Patel. </li><li>New York allowed all voters to vote absentee without an excuse. Because clerks cannot start counting absentee ballots until days after the election, many races won't be called until next week. </li></ul>Absentee ballots that are postmarked by June 23 will be accepted at election offices through June 30, meaning that many of these elections will not be called until this week. As <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/19/us/politics/nyc-vote-by-mail.html">The New York Times notes</a>, prevailing New York law only permits county clerks to begin counting absentee ballots until eight days after the election and after all in-person votes have been tabulated. The current results, those released on Tuesday after the polls closed, only include in-person early and election day votes. <h2><div type="image" title="Jamaal Bowman" height="1000" width="2000" msid="76534438" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>The stakes:</h2>New York's Democratic presidential primary was put officially back on after a judge ruled against the New York Board of Elections' attempt to cancel it, citing COVID-19 concerns, after Sen. Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race.New York District Judge Analisa Torres rejected the BOE's claim that continuing to hold the presidential primary would jeopardize public health and ordered the state <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judge-orders-bernie-sanders-to-be-restored-ny-primary-ballot-2020-5">to conduct a full presidential primary with all qualifying candidates on the ballot. </a>Former VP Joe Biden has been the presumptive Democratic nominee since April 8 and now has officially earned the required number of delegates to formally clinch the nomination. But Sanders is staying on the ballot and continuing to earn delegates in the remaining presidential primary states for his campaign to have representation on key Democratic National Convention committees. <iframe src="https://embeds.ddhq.io/2020demdelegatetracker/delegate-tracker-business-insider/dist/index.html" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" scrolling="no"></iframe>There were also several competitive House primaries and elections occurring this week.In New York's 27th congressional district, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/22/nyregion/ny-27-special-election.html">there was be a special election</a> to replace former Rep. Chris Collins, who resigned after pleading guilty to federal insider trading charges. The Republican nominee Chris Jacobs defeated Democrat Nate McMurray in the district, which Trump carried by nearly 25 points in 2016. In the Greater New York City area, there are several notable Democratic primaries <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-running-in-new-york-9-15-16-17-district-democratic-primaries-2020-6">in four safe Democratic-held seats.</a> Rep. Eliot Engel, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/longtime-ny-congressman-tries-to-fend-off-challenger-from-left-and-avoid-an-ocasio-cortez-style-upset/2020/06/20/96b56550-b241-11ea-8758-bfd1d045525a_story.html">lost in an upset</a> against primary challenger Jamaal Bowman, a former middle school principal.In New York's 9th district, which includes several neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn, <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-yvette-clarke-congress-brooklyn-20200622-qyrakn4fkbfcrj2gnbgwhmkby4-story.html">Rep. Yvette Clarke</a> defeated primary challenger Adem Bunkedddeko, who won 47% of the vote against in her 2018, and a challenge from the center from Councilman Chaim Deutsch. There are also two competitive primaries for open seats held by Democrats. In New York's South Bronx-based <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/09/nyregion/ruben-diaz-bronx-congress.html">15th district</a>, held by retiring Rep. Jose Serrano, New York City Councilmembers Ruben Diaz Sr. and Ritchie Torres are the frontrunners in the Democratic primary. Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, Assemblyman Michael Blake, former City Council President Melissa Mark-Viverito, and affordable housing advocate Samelys Lopez are also vying for the seat.In <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/campaign-chronicles/campaigning-during-the-coronavirus-the-race-for-new-yorks-seventeenth-congressional-district">New York's 17th district, which is based in the Hudson Valley</a> and includes Rockland and parts of Westchester Counties, attorney and activist <a href="https://www.advocate.com/election/2020/6/22/mondaire-jones-could-be-nations-first-black-gay-congressman">Mondaire Jones</a> defeated crowded field of candidates are competing to replace retiring Rep. Nita Lowey. State Senator David Carlucci, former State Department advisor Evelyn Farkas, State Representative David Buchwald, and former federal prosecutor Adam Schleifer all ran in the primary. Rep. Jerry Nadler, whose district includes most of Manhattan's West Side and parts of Brooklyn, defeated long-<a href="https://ballotpedia.org/New_York%27s_10th_Congressional_District_election,_2020">shot primary challenges</a> from Lindsey Boylan and Jonathan Herzog. Rep. Carolyn Maloney <a href="https://patch.com/new-york/midtown-nyc/nyc-primary-election-2020-maloney-defends-ny-12-congress-seat">of New York's 12th district</a>, which includes much of the East Side of Manhattan and parts of Queens, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carolyn-maloney-suraj-patel-new-york-12-primary-live-results-2020-6">is facing a re-match against primary challenger Suraj Patel</a>, who won 40% of the vote in 2018.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who won her seat in New York's 14th congressional district in a historic upset over longtime incumbent Joe Crowley in 2018, easily beat a primary challenger from the center <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aocs-democratic-challenger-lived-in-trump-tower-before-moving-queens-2020-4">launched by former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera</a>, who had significant <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-wall-street-donations-to-democrat-rival-2020-6">backing from Wall Street donors. </a>There are also competitive Republican primaries in competitive House seats that Democrats won back from the GOP in the 2018 midterms. In <a href="https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2020/06/22/gop-hopes-to-flip-back-two-trump-friendly-districts-in-ny/">New York's 11th district</a>, which includes all of Staten Island and some of Brooklyn, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis beat former prosecutor Joe Caldarera for the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Rep. Max Rose this November. Upstate, former GOP Rep. Claudia Tenney <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/New_York%27s_22nd_Congressional_District_election,_2020_(June_23_Republican_primary)">won the Republican primary</a> for her old seat in New York's Syracuse-based 22nd district, which Democratic Rep. Anthony Brindisi won back from her in 2018. In the Hudson Valley, attorney <a href="https://www.kyleforny19.com/">Kyle Van De Water</a> and fashion designer <a href="https://riverreporter.com/stories/ola-hawatmeh-is-running-for-the-republican-primary-in-the-19th-district,37757">Ola Hawatmeh</a> are competing neck-and-neck in the Republican primary to face Democratic Rep. Antonio Delgado, who won back New York's 19th congressional district for the Democrats in 2018. In <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/New_York%27s_2nd_Congressional_District_election,_2020">New York's 2nd district</a>, based in Long Island, there are competitive Democratic and Republican primaries to replace retiring GOP Rep. Peter King. <a href="https://jackiegordonforcongress.com/meet-jackie">Jackie Gordon,</a> a US Army veteran, former high school counselor, and Babylon Town Council member is competing against attorney and Suffolk County Democratic Committee member <a href="https://www.facebook.com/VOTEMAHER/">Patricia Maher.</a>Two New York State Assemblymen, <a href="https://www.garbarinoforny.com/">Andrew Garbarino</a> and <a href="https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Michael-LiPetri/bio/">Michael LiPetri</a>, are competing for the Republican nomination to succeed King.

I think a reason the reaction among Republican and Democratic lawmakers to Wednesday's shooting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-congressional-baseball-shooting-press-conference-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">has been so unified</a>, and mostly devoid of point-scoring, is that members of Congress in both parties are scared of the same thing.They're afraid that some disgruntled member of the public is going to try to try to kill them for political reasons. Indeed, members of both parties reported death threats on Wednesday:There's a lot of discussion about whether the political environment is getting scarier because of irresponsible rhetoric. But I think the issue is broader: We are in a dangerous time, both for the effectiveness of important social institutions and for the physical safety of lawmakers, because of a collapse in public trust in authority.In 2015, political scientist Nathan Kalmoe <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2015/12/11/a-surprising-number-of-americans-endorse-violence-against-the-government-heres-why/?utm_term=.4283a07e5535">wrote for The Washington Post</a> about surveys he conducted in 2010, asking respondents about statements like "some of the problems citizens have with government could be fixed with a few well-aimed bullets."Anywhere from 5% to 14% of respondents agreed with each of the violent statements proposed. Those are minorities, but not small minorities; they imply tens of millions of Americans felt favorably about political violence.Kalmoe found that support for political violence did not vary with party affiliation. But respondents were significantly more likely to agree with calls for political violence if they also doubted that elections make the government responsive to citizens.Do you think the fraction of Americans who doubt that Washington is responsive to elections has risen or fallen since 2010?More than ever in my lifetime, people believe the system isn't working and their opponents are wielding power illegitimately. It's reasonable for lawmakers to be concerned that, in this environment, people will be more likely to go from grousing about politicians on Facebook to shooting them at a baseball field.What can be done to get people to calm down, to have greater trust in the federal government and other institutions, and to accept the legitimacy of government authority, so elected officials can feel safe at work again?<h2>The public became disaffected for a reason</h2>The first thing is to note that members of the public have a lot of legitimate reasons to have lost faith in institutions, and to feel disaffected and angry right now. There are also major public policy debates, and it's right for people to feel strongly about proposed actions of government that would hurt them.And obviously, current circumstances are less than opportune for rebuilding a sense of federal government legitimacy. This is largely due to various bizarre and infuriating aspects of the 2016 campaign, which culminated in the election of the least popular major-party nominee in the history of polling, despite his failure to win a plurality of the popular vote.Our current elected officials are doing their jobs in an inherently difficult time. But they should reflect on what they are doing to exacerbate disaffection instead of mitigating it.I don't think it was very healthy for the public discourse that two of the leading candidates in the 2016 election spent so much of their time <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-election-fraud-rigged-polls-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">talking about how "rigged" things are</a>. This is a term that counsels disaffection and despair - that paints the political process as futile and encourages supporters to assume any loss was unfair.I think the tendency of politicians to hyperventilate about the apocalyptic nature of policies they oppose - especially when those policies constitute, in truth, incremental changes to existing systems - has placed much of the country in a permanent and psychologically unhealthy state of panic.Many things are bad, but politicians are often out there saying they're even worse. Whatever you thought about Obamacare, it was not "arguably the worst law in our history," as now-Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/06/ben-sasse-denies-obamacare-comments-in-his-own-campaign-ad/">claimed in a campaign video</a> in 2014. And Sasse is supposed to be one of the measured ones.(Of course, politicians have had assistance here from an increasingly polarized and screamy media, as you probably know from reading some of your friends' Facebook walls.)I think President Donald Trump's grand and unrealistic promises, combined with his unpopular legislative agenda that would break those promises, are likely to only further increase the level of public disaffection over time, and not just among his opponents.And I think Trump's insistence on viewing every initiative as a zero-sum "deal" with a winner and a loser is exacerbating the existing tendency of voters on both sides to assume every policy decision has to end with somebody getting screwed - and to fear that it will be them.<h2>Rebuilding trust will help us all breathe easier</h2>I think the best way to turn down the temperature about Washington is for politicians to do their jobs well: Listen to your constituents. Say your opponents' ideas are exactly as bad as you think they are, but no worse. Pass laws that are popular.Ensure the federal government is taking the necessary steps to prevent unforeseen disasters similar to the ones that wrecked institutional credibility over the last two decades, like 9/11 and the Iraq War and Hurricane Katrina and the financial crash.Take extra steps to demonstrate your lack of conflicts of interest, since that's extra important at a time when the public takes such a dim view of politicians' integrity and effectiveness.Eschew <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/no-choice-politics-trump-brexit-2016-12">no-choice politics</a>; it makes people angry and cynical.Try to find some policy areas that aren't zero-sum, where Republicans and Democrats can make a show of working together, even if it's mostly to demonstrate that mommy and daddy don't fight all the time.We all made a lot of jokes about last week's "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-white-house-infrastructure-week-amid-comey-testimony-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">infrastructure week</a>," but aside from the economic effects, I think it would be good for the national psyche right now if Republicans and Democrats were seeing to it that some big, concrete things were getting built that they could cut ribbons on together.It is not impossible to convince most people that the system is mostly working. Many governors from both political parties are popular right now.And despite everything that is wrong in America, a lot is going right. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">Rep.
