<p><span class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span>About a month ago, I got a call from Discover about an attempted purchase at an H&amp;M in New York<strong>&#xa0;</strong>for around $200.<strong><br /></strong></p>
<p>I had been in Boston <span>&#xa0;- with my Discover card -&#xa0;</span>when the attempt was made, so needless to say, I had not been the one to make that purchase.</p>
<p>Discover closed my account and sent me a new credit card.</p>
<p>A couple weeks later, I got a text from Citibank asking if I had made a purchase at a TGI Friday's in Brooklyn for $110.60.</p>
<p>I can't remember the last time I went to a TGI Fridays. I called Citibank and told them this. They proceeded to close my account and overnight me a new debit card.</p>
<p>It was then that I decided it was time to start taking some precautions when using my cards.</p>
<p>Here's what I'm doing in hopes that the shiny new credit card and debit card which are in my wallet now will stay there for a while.</p>
<h3>Whenever I can, I'm using cash instead of my credit or debit card.</h3>
<p>With all the recent data breaches at big retailers, I figure the fewer stores that have my credit or debit card information, the better. Instead, I withdraw cash every morning to use throughout the rest of the day. Card information can also be stolen from an ATM though, which leads me to my next point.</p>
<h3>I'm withdrawing cash from the same ATM.</h3>
<p>Card skimming, when someone puts a fake card reader over an ATM's real card reader,&#xa0;<a href="http://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/">accounts for over 80% of ATM fraud</a>,&#xa0;<span>according to former Washington Post reporter and security expert Brian Krebs. Skimming devices are hard to detect since they look exactly like the real card reader beneath them. The more ATMs I go to, the greater chance I have of using one that has a skimming device, which is why I'm limiting my ATM use.</span></p>
<p><span><span>Fortunately, there is a Citibank branch with multiple ATMs right below my apartment building - which I will admit, is a large part of&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/questions-to-choose-a-bank-2014-12">the reason I switched to Citibank</a><span>&#xa0;- so I've been sticking to that location for withdrawals</span></span></p>
<h3>I'm checking card activity online daily.</h3>
<p>Before my two cards were compromised, I didn't always watch my credit and debit account activity very closely. So if Discover had not called me and Citibank had not texted me, the fraud might have gone unnoticed - at least for a while. Now, I try to log into both my credit and debit card accounts every day. This way, I can see the purchases that have been made that day - if any - and make sure they're my own and not someone else's.&#xa0;</p>
<h3>I'm not signing onto my online banking accounts from any computers besides my own.</h3>
<p>When I check my account activity, I do it either from my own laptop at home or from my phone. Signing on to my accounts from a public computer seems riskier, since there's the chance that my login information will be saved and available to the next user of that computer.</p>
<p>To be on the safe side when using my phone, I make sure to enter my log in information every time I sign on (instead of having my phone remember it), and in the event that my phone is stolen or I lose my phone, I can simply deactivate it.&#xa0;</p>

Here's What I'm Doing So My Debit And Credit Cards Aren't Stolen ... Again

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source"><a href="http://statigr.am/p/344812458244043533_46534347">riendeep/statigr.am</a></p></div>Since credit debt isn't exactly considered an income-booster, it's no wonder so many consumers forget how closely credit and <keyword id="6368033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Taxes">taxes</keyword> are intertwined.</span></p>
<p>Just ask the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-new-legal-interpretation-may-require-you-to-pay-taxes-on-frequent-flier-miles-2012-1" target="_blank">Citibank credit card customers</a> who were stunned when the company suddenly decided to tax their frequent flier rewards, or the 6.4 million taxpayers estimated to pay taxes on relieved debt in 2012.  </p>
<p>For insight into the little-known ways taxes and credit go hand in hand, we tapped Ken Lin, CEO of <a href="http://www.creditkarma.com/" target="_blank">CreditKarma.com</a>. Here are four examples: </p>
<p><strong>Paying your tax bill late could damage your score.<span></span></strong></p>
<p>Just like your electricity and cable bills, falling behind on your tax payments could drag your credit score down. That's because the government could file a tax lien against you for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/even-the-savviest-personal-finance-bloggers-get-slapped-with-a-5000-tax-bill-2012-2" target="_blank">taking too long to pay your bill</a>. Since a lien is public record, it goes straight to credit reporting agencies and could stay on your credit report for as many as seven years, Lin warns. If your bill's too much to handle, be proactive and work out a repayment plan with the <keyword id="6359816" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IRS">IRS</keyword> instead. </p>
<p class="inside-copy"><strong>Think twice before you pay taxes with your credit card.</strong></p>
<p class="inside-copy">"When facing a hefty tax bill, many Americans might be tempted to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/filing-taxes-for-the-first-time-doesnt-have-to-be-terrifying-2012-2" target="_blank">pay their taxes</a> with a credit card, if only to earn the reward points," Lin says. But before you fork over that plastic, keep in mind that the IRS will charge a processing fee of anywhere from 1.89% to 2.49% of the payment.</p>
<p class="inside-copy">"That means if you owe $10,000 in taxes, paying it on a credit card would cost you an additional $249 – well above the probable value of the credit card rewards earned," he notes. </p>
<p><strong><span>Your credit card reward point “gifts” may be taxable.<span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></span></strong></p>
<p>Back to those <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-new-legal-interpretation-may-require-you-to-pay-taxes-on-frequent-flier-miles-2012-1" target="_blank">grumpy Citibank customers</a>: Keep in mind that some of those sweet sign-up bonuses and rewards credit card companies have been using to bait new customers may be taxable. It all depends on how they were earned, Lin says. </p>
<p><span></span>"Traditional rewards that are accumulated because of purchases made with credit cards are tax-exempt but rewards that are not tied to purchases, like cash or miles bonuses for opening a new account, are taxable as the IRS views them as 'taxable property windfalls.'"</p>
<p><strong>You'll pay taxes on your relieved debt.</strong></p>
<p><span>You might thank your lucky stars if a credit company decides to write off your debt, but remember that the IRS will consider that taxable income. "</span>It’s the same way with debt settlement," Lin says. "The remainder of the debt that you settled is subject to taxation." Keep an eye out for a <span>1099-C form if any debt was forgiven during the 2011 tax year. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Costco's credit card swap has customers calling the transition a "debacle" and threatening to cancel their memberships. &#xa0;</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Monday,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-costcos-credit-card-swap-2016-6"> Costco finalized its&#xa0;partnership with Visa and Citi</a>&#xa0;that makes&#xa0;Visa the card of choice at the budget retailer, ending a 16-year partnership with American Express.&#xa0;<span>With the change, Costco customers who earn rewards through a Costco co-branded credit card will need to use the Costco Anywhere Visa - not the TrueEarnings American Express Costco card.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>However, many Costco members say they have not received their new<span>&#xa0;Costco Visa credit card in the mail, or are struggling to&#xa0;activate the&#xa0;new card. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Citi has been unable to keep up with questions and complaints from customers about the change, leading to Costco members waiting for hours to speak with Citi representatives. Costco has 81 million members worldwide. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The&#xa0;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">switch over from American Express to Citi Visa at Costco must be a huge mess," longtime Costco member Glenn Ginsburg wrote in an email to Business Insider. "Can't get to speak with a representative regarding my business credit card - have either been hung up on due to large call volume or waiting for 53 minutes to be transferred to another representative."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ginsburg says that he eventually spoke with&#xa0;someone in Costco's corporate office&#xa0;who was unable to help beyond providing the phone number for Citi assistance that Ginsburg had already called. The Costco customer relations employee&#xa0;told Ginsburger that Costco&#xa0;had been receiving similar calls from other Costco members, and that while Costco had prepared for the change, Citi may not have put sufficient additional resources towards the project.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many customers' biggest complaint for&#xa0;Citi is&#xa0;that they have&#xa0;not yet received their </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Costco Anywhere Visa, which was supposed to be shipped to cardholders in May. You are losing my monthly groceries, my office supplies, and our family travel business."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Again, the problem of the missing cards and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Costco/posts/10154942518804947">other</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Costco/posts/10154942471524947">Costco Visa card</a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Costco/posts/10154942375559947">confusion</a> has been further complicated by Citi's inability to deal with the volume of calls from customers</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Worst credit card transition ever - 4 hours and counting on the phone with citibank and they still can't get my cards to me," </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Costco/posts/10154942601564947"><span style="font-weight: 400;">writes</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> one. "Costco customer service was zero help getting me a temp card at the warehouse too. These banks offer the most desirable mobile features across categories

<ul class="summary-list"><li>American Airlines was sued by two fliers who alleged it stole 1.1 million bonus miles from them. </li><li>The plaintiffs say their AAdvantage accounts were closed after they opened credit cards offering sign-up miles. </li></ul><p>Two<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/american-airlines">  American Airlines</a> flyers have sued the air carrier, accusing it of stealing more than 1 million in collective reward miles from them after they opened up multiple credit cards that offered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-are-points-miles-worth-value">sign-up bonus miles</a>.</p><p>In the lawsuit filed on Monday in US District Court for the Northern District of California, Ari and Shanna Nachison accuse American Airlines of abruptly closing their accounts with the airline's frequent-flier program, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-to-earn-redeem-american-airlines-aadvantage-miles">AAdvantage</a>, in 2020, forcing them to forfeit about 564,463 and 550,664 award miles, respectively.</p><p>The lawsuit alleges that American Airlines accused the California residents of fraud for opening several AAdvantage credit card accounts through Citibank and Barclays between 2017 and 2019, even though there were no bonus restrictions to do so. The Nachisons say in the lawsuit they did not engage in fraud when they applied for and opened those credit card accounts.</p><p>American Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Business Insider on Tuesday.</p><p>The lawsuit was filed as a proposed class action. If it's allowed to move forward as a class-action lawsuit, other American Airlines customers who feel they were similarly harmed may have the opportunity to join as plaintiffs.</p><p>According to the lawsuit, the Nachison's were each awarded tens of thousands of enrollment bonus miles to their AAdvantage accounts after meeting the sign-up bonus requirements for the Citibank-AAdvantage and Barclays-AAdvantage credit cards.</p><p>The lawsuit says American Airlines claimed the customers "engaged in fraud in order to seize on an opportunity to terminate their accounts, delete hundreds of thousands of bonus miles (which held monetary value), and canceled upcoming tickets and bookings."</p><p>The airline "seized all bonus miles, regardless of how they were accrued, including those miles for which AA does not even allege were earned through fraud," says the suit.</p><p>The lawsuit says Ari and Shanna Nachison received separate emails in 2020 from American Airlines informing them that their AAdvantage accounts were closed due to alleged "violations of the General AAdvantage Program Conditions."</p><p>The emails said that those violations "related to the accrual of ineligible miles and benefits; through fraud, misrepresentation and/or abuse of the AAdvantage Program," according to the lawsuit.</p><p>"The generic emails informing Plaintiffs and Class Members that their accounts were terminated never mentioned Citi, Barclays, or the Citi-AAdvantage credit cards or Barclays-AAdvantage credit cards at issue," the lawsuit says.</p><p>Instead, the lawsuit says, the emails only contained "boilerplate language."</p><p>American Airlines' "decision to conceal all specificity regarding the alleged fraud was an intentional attempt to delay and prevent Plaintiffs and Class Member from pursuing their legal rights," states the lawsuit.</p><p>When the Nachinsons received the emails about the termination of their AAdvantage accounts they did not know they themselves were being accused of fraud, according to the lawsuit.</p><p>"AA's decision to terminate AAdvantage accounts entirely was improper and denied AAdvantage members the benefits they had accrued through previous purchases," the suit says.</p>

"Our approach is going to be to partner deeply with banks and the financial system," Google executive Caesar Sengupta told the WSJ.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Forget about searching the web - Google's next big thing is far less revolutionary: Banking.</p><p>More specifically, Google is looking to create checking accounts in partnership with Citigroup, the parent company of Citibank, and the Stanford Federal Credit Union.</p><p>The project, codenamed "Cache," is scheduled to launch to the public next year, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/next-in-googles-quest-for-consumer-dominancebanking-11573644601">according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday morning</a>. Unlike <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-card-review-best-features-perks-2019-9">Apple's credit card</a>, which prominently featured Apple branding with only a small logo for its financial backer, Goldman Sachs, on the back of the physical card, the Google checking account will look and act like a standard Citibank checking account. </p><p>"Our approach is going to be to partner deeply with banks and the financial system," Google executive Caesar Sengupta <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/next-in-googles-quest-for-consumer-dominancebanking-11573644601">told the WSJ</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>No other details about the partnership between Google and Citigroup, or how the checking account will work were available - representatives from Google didn't respond to request for comment as of publishing. Citigroup representatives confirmed the deal, but declined to offer further details. Business Insider has also reached out to Stanford Federal Credit Union for comment.</p><p>It's unclear whether Google's checking account would charge users a fee - Google has yet to decide, it told the Journal. Similar to Apple's approach with the Apple Card integrated directly into the iPhone's Wallet app and Apple Pay, Google checking account users would access their account through Google Pay. And the company is open to adding more banks in the future, according to the Journal.</p><p>Like Facebook's attempted foray into financial services with its Calibra and Libra cryptocurrency projects, Google could face an uphill regulatory battle over its attempt to enter the financial market. </p><p>The company has faced increasing scrutiny from state and federal regulators over potential antitrust violations, with both <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sec-filing-alphabet-doj-antitrust-probe-2019-9">the Department of Justice</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-attorneys-general-launch-antitrust-probe-into-google-2019-9">a group of state attorneys general</a> looking into the tech giant.
