And, it might just be the start of better times. As per a survey conducted by LocalCircles, 34% of the respondents (one in three people) are planning to watch a movie in the cinema hall or multiplex in the next 60 days. LocalCircles, which has regularly conducted the ‘Citizen pulse on Cinema Halls’ survey since October 2020 to understand expected footfalls during the pandemic and thereafter, reported that the percentage of citizens likely to visit a cinema hall/ multiplex has increased by 150% in the last year. There has also been an increase from December 2021 in the number of people planning to visit the cinemas at least once, and those planning to visit the cinemas multiple times. “The data comparison shows that as against 2% of respondents who indicated plans to go multiple times in December 2021, the percentage has risen to 6%. In the next category of those planning to visit once, the difference is much bigger at 28% in Jan 2023 as against 12% in December 2021,” added LocalCircles. Percentage of citizens likely to visit cinemas increased by 150%: LocalCircles survey

The Association finds it highly demotivating and disheartening when in fact, Cinemas and Multiplexes can become an example of how social distancing guidelines and crowd control can be best exercised in a safe and planned manner. As compared to the unorganised retail and shops that have been opened up, multiplexes and cinema are part of the organised sector, playing hosts to ‘revenue paying’ customers only and hence, in a better position to limit crowds unlike marketplaces and deploy all the mechanisms and guidelines for crowd control and social distancing.” “The multiplex industry in India employs more than 200,000 people directly. We are the backbone of the Indian Film Industry accounting nearly 60% of revenues of film business. The livelihoods of more than a million people – right from the spot boys to makeup artists, musicians, designers, technicians and engineers to cinema employees to directors and actors – hinges on the survival of Indian cinema. These are real challenges that the industry will have to overcome and we believe together, with the support of the government, we will be able to overcome them,” it further read. Globally, countries like France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Hong Kong, UAE, US, etc., and more recently, Belgium and Malaysia have opened cinemas. To which, MAI said, “Many countries have opened cinemas to the public with implementation of the highest degree of safety protocols and have seen a warm response by audiences. In effect, more than 20 major cinema markets around the world have started operating. MAI is of the firm belief that, there must be a start and the unlocking of cinemas in non-containment zones across India should be done post haste – there must be a beginning and an opportunity must be given to us, just like some of the other sectors.”

Multiplex Association of India expresses dismay after the government decides to keep cinema halls shut in Unlock 2.0

loans, tax waiverKolkata, May 13 () Cinema hall owners in WestBengal have urged the state government to waive their taxesand provide financial assistance and interest-free loans tothem in view of the closure of the movie screens due to thelockdown.The Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA),Exhibitors' Section, in a recent letter to Chief MinisterMamata Banerjee, has urged the state government to reimburseat least 50 per cent of the salaries paid by the cinema hallowners to their employees during the lockdown period.The association has also sought interest-free loans ofRs 2 lakh per cinema hall after reopening of theestablishments so that the owners can pay their backlogs andreturn to business, the letter, made available to the media onWednesday, said.The body said it would take at least 18 months for thesector to return anywhere close to normalcy after the lockdownis lifted.It urged the state government to waive GST, show tax,local entertainment tax, property tax and other municipaltaxes for at least two years from the date of closure of thecinema halls.The association sought nominal imposition of servicetax so that cinema hall owners can upgrade the facilities."The effects of COVID-19 are nil revenue withsalaries, taxes, rent payments, electricity bills all accruingagainst zero revenue. Cinemas were the first to shut down andmaybe one of the last to be allowed to operate post-lockdown,"the letter said.It pointed out that over 500 single screens in WestBengal have downed their shutters over the last two decadesdue to a gradual decline in audience numbers and lack offunding to upgrade the facilities."The COVID-19 pandemic has struck the final blow tothe sector," the association said.EIMPA Exhibitors' Section Chairman Ratan Saha told on Wednesday, "If there is no incentive in the post-lockdownscenario for single screens and regional multiplexes, theowners, who will have to reduce seating capacity by 60-70 percent to maintain social distancing, will have to close downthe facilities and use the properties for other purposes."The association boasts of membership of owners of morethan 200 cinema halls in the state. INOX, which has 624 screens in 68 cities too is confident about their growth as the lockdown lifts. But the investors do not share their confidence. PVR has witnessed a 43% decline in its decline in the last one month. Whereas the share price of INOX saw a 39% fall between February 18 and March 18.

Cinema halls lose ₹150 crore a week with lockdowns and delayed releases

<ul><li>As theatres return to 100% occupancy today, MIB issues new guidelines. </li><li>As per the order, cinema halls will have distanced seats, staggered <keyword id="7987860" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="show-timings">show timings</keyword>, and bookings, mandatory social distancing, and encourage digital payments. </li></ul>The <keyword id="832830" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Information-Broadcasting">Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting</keyword> on January 31 released Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cinema halls and theatres on preventive measures to contain the spread of Covid-19. Last week, the government allowed full occupancy in cinema halls and multiplexes starting from February 1. Now that the theatres are returning to normal operations, MIB has issued SOPs, which are as follows: <ul><li>Adequate physical distancing of at least 6 feet to be followed outside the auditoriums, common areas and waiting areas at all times. </li><li>Use of face covers/masks to be made mandatory at all times.</li><li>Availability of hand sanitizers, preferably in the touch-free mode, at entry and exit points as well as common areas within the premises. </li><li>Respiratory etiquettes to be strictly followed. This involves strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing with a tissue/handkerchief/flexed elbow and disposing off used tissues properly. </li><li>Self-monitoring of health by all and reporting any illness at the earliest to state and district helpline. vi. Spitting shall be strictly prohibited. </li><li>Installation &amp; use of <keyword id="8995298" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="aarogya-setu-app">Aarogya Setu App</keyword> shall be advised to all.</li></ul>Entry &amp; Exit points <ul><li>Thermal screening of visitors/staff is to be carried out at entry points. Only asymptomatic individuals shall be allowed to enter the premises.</li><li>Provisions for hand sanitization should be made available at all entry points and in work areas.</li><li>Designated queue markers shall be made available for entry and exit of the audience from the auditorium and the premises.</li><li>The Exit should be done in a staggered row-wise manner to avoid crowding.</li><li>Sufficient time interval between successive screenings on a single screen as well as on various screens in a multiplex shall be provided to ensure row-wise staggered entry and exit of the audience.</li></ul>Show timings <ul><li>Staggered show timings shall be followed for multiple screens to avoid crowding. </li><li>The show commencement time, intermission period and finish time of a show at any screen shall not overlap with the commencement time, intermission period or finish time of a show at any other screen in a multiplex.</li></ul>Booking and Payments <ul><li>Digital no-contact transactions should be the most preferred mode for issue/verification/payments for tickets, food, and beverages, etc. by using online bookings, use of e-wallets, QR code scanners, etc.</li><li>Contact number shall be taken at the time of booking of tickets to facilitate contact tracing.</li><li>The purchase of tickets at the box office shall be open throughout the day and advance booking shall be allowed to avoid crowding at the sale counters.</li><li>Sufficient number of counters at the box office shall be opened with adequate physical distancing norms, to prevent crowding during physical booking of tickets.</li><li>Floor markers shall be used for physical distancing during queue management at the box office.</li></ul>

Kathmandu, Cinema halls across Kathmandu on Friday stopped the screening of '<keyword id="9776044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adipurush" source="Orion">Adipurush</keyword>', a day after Mayor Balen Shah warned that no Indian movie will be allowed in the Nepal capital if the film based on the Hindu epic <keyword id="6363500" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramayana" source="Orion">Ramayana</keyword> does not correct the "mistake" about the birthplace of Sita. The <keyword id="17720608" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nepal-film-union" source="Orion">Nepal Film Union</keyword> has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing 'Adipurush' and urged theatres outside the capital to release it only after assessing the security situation. In a tweet on Thursday, the Mayor said that in 'Adipurush', it is mentioned that "Sita is the daughter of India". He added that until this mistake will not be corrected in India and Nepal, no Indian movie will be allowed to be shown within the Kathmandu metropolitan city limit. The film is written and directed by <keyword id="2236748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="om-raut" source="Orion">Om Raut</keyword> and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the film has courted controversy in India as well. In a statement, Nepal's QFX Cinemas said: "Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show 'Adipurush'... We are waiting for the government's decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers." Nepal's Censor Board also decided to hold back permission to the upcoming Indian epic mythological film, based on the Hindu epic "Ramayana", for the same reason. Sita was born in Nepal's Janakpur and Lord Rama came and married her, as per the Ramayana. Besides Mayor Balen Shah, some sister organisations of various political parties have also protested against the film and warned that they will not allow the screening until the filmmakers correct the mistakes regarding the birthplace of Sita. This is not the first time that Mayor Shah ratcheted up the nationalist planks. Mayor Shah on June 8 placed the map of Greater Nepal in his chamber to counter the Indian "Akhand Bharat" map placed in the new Parliament building.
