Retail inflation hit an 18-month low at 4.7% in April. “Inflation has moderated, but there is no room for complacency. War against inflation is not over. Pausing <keyword id="114268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rate-hike" source="Orion">interest rate hike</keyword> is not in my hands, depends on the on-ground situation,” Das said speaking at the annual CII session in New Delhi. He also said the Indian banking system remained stable and resilient with strong capital, liquidity position and improving asset quality. And that,the central bank would remain proactive and prudent, and would do its best to support the economy to maintain financial stability. Besides, he said, credit offtake in banks also is remaining quite resilient, and it is 15.5% as per the latest figure. "And on top of that, we have the advantage of demography, which again is a huge opportunity for India. And it's something which will eventually add to our potential output or what some people prefer to call it India's growth potential. That's a theme, which will play out in the medium to long term," he said. He expressed confidence India could clock a growth of 6.5 per cent during the current financial year on the back of these tailwinds. The central bank will also ensure adequate availability of liquidity to meet production requirements of the economy, he assured. Retail inflation inches close to lower end of RBI tolerance limit In the month of April, retail inflation, or consumer price index (CPI) inflation which came in at 4.7% — and has been closing in on the lower tolerance limit of RBI’s 4-6% band. For the last three quarters, the country’s retail inflation has been above RBI's upper tolerance limit of 6%. It fell back into the central bank’s comfort zone only in November 2022. The persistently high inflation over months led to RBI’s monetary policy committee hiking the base interest rates six times before taking a pause in the last monetary policy in April. Since May 2022, RBI has raised rates by a total of 250 basis points. In spite of displaying confidence on cooling inflation, Das did not make any comments on a further pause in rate hikes. “Have to see how El Nino plays out,” he said at the CII event. El Nino is a band of warm ocean water that spans from South America to Asia triggering far-reaching weather changes. It has affected economic growth and caused losses in two separate events in the early 80s and late 90s. Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council launched digital platform
to ensure job opportunities to skilled candidates

Our nation is poised to become the world’s youngest country by 2020, with an average age of 29 years. Coinciding with that event, India will account for 28% of the world’s workforce, according to an E&amp;Y- FICCI report. 
 Reports indicate that the vast talent pool of the country suffers from either not having the <keyword id="33447" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="skills">skills</keyword> to be employable or in many instances are not being able to signal their availability for <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> matching their skills due to an inefficient marketplace for jobs. This is especially true for jobs at entry level or mass recruitment, since a majority of the jobs tend to be the lower levels of in the hierarchy. 
 Of the five million graduates, only 34% are readily employable. Most lack necessary skills required for any role in any industry, according to an assessment tests done by Wheebox-People Strong in association with <keyword id="6358345" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CII">CII</keyword>. <keyword id="6372870" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Census">Census</keyword> data released in September 2013 indicated that 63.4% of India’s total population falls in the working age group. According to a study on skill development in India conducted by NSDC, 1 million people join the workforce every month i.e. over 12 million per year.They can be categorized as highly skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled, with majority falling in the last category.How this issue of employability is addressed will determine whether India eventually experiences a demographic dividend or a demographic nightmare. 
 
According to another study by Aspiring Minds, 47% of graduates are not employable in any sector of the economy. Poor knowledge of English and inadequate computing skills are compounded by the absence of even basic domain knowledge for roles and industry that job seekers hope to join. Unfortunately a vast majority of students prefer dead-end and non-value adding graduate degree to vocational training. 
 A reorientation towards vocational training or introduction of strong aspects of “learning by doing” and soft skills in graduate programmes can remedy this situation. As an immediate response, the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Government">Government</keyword> is striving to achieve formal/informal skill development of the working population through various initiatives, which employ fresh learning methods.HR professionals and the Government together need to devise educational programmes which impart the required skills to the students to make them productive and employable. The private sector needs to spell out what is it that they are looking for in a fresher. 
 
The private sector is also taking several initiatives to contribute effectively to the Government’s endeavors. Companies and industry associations across business sectors, are not only creating their in-house training facilities, but are also taking steps to make potential employees job-ready before they join organizations. A number of the jobs available for the low-end white-collar workers require a very basic level of training. What’s more in the service sector, most employers are willing to provide such training and job seekers to be gainfully employed. Besides the efforts being made towards training them and arming them with better skills, it is also crucial to identify their existing skills and preferences and connect them to jobs that they are most suited for. 
 Hence, it is not quite correct to say that most graduates are ‘unemployable’, since with a basic level of training interventions and on the job training, job seekers can be prepared for roles in field sales, customer service, in-store sales, back-office, logistics etc,graduates who can thus become skilled workers and be productive is huge. The skill <keyword id="6420764" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="deficit">deficit</keyword> is definitely over-hyped as far as the service sector is concerned. Quite often it is simply an issue of an inefficient marketplace, which makes it difficult to for a candidate with high “fit” and “intent” to signal their presence to employers. 
 
Skill deficit is more of a reality in manufacturing where technical expertise and training is often lacking. 
It is therefore a fair conclusion that the skill deficit, though real, is often a match-making deficiency in the mass recruitment segment, especially in services industry. Being able to identify candidates with high intent and fit and provide a clearing or pre-screening mechanism can solve a significant part of the woes.

Jobs: Skill deficit , a myth or reality?

The remarks came as US short-seller <keyword id="20016892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindenburg-Research" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hindenburg Research" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hindenburg Research">Hindenburg Research</keyword> raised questions about a potential conflict of interest involving Buch and private equity major <keyword id="20144468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blackstone" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Blackstone" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Blackstone">Blackstone</keyword>. Her husband Dhaval Buch is a senior advisor with Blackstone, a major player in the <keyword id="20009947" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="REIT" source="keywords">REIT</keyword> space. However, the couple refuted the allegations. Also, Hindenburg alleged that SEBI's recent amendments to REIT regulations 2014 favoured a specific financial conglomerate, which the markets regulator denied. Speaking at an event organised by industry body CII, Buch said," If I utter the word REITs, I am accused of conflict of interest". REITs are a new concept in the Indian market but have been a popular choice globally for their lucrative returns and capital appreciation. A REIT is made up of a portfolio of commercial real estate assets, the majority of which are already leased out. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword> on Monday levelled fresh conflict of interest allegations against Buch and asked Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> to come clean as the head of the appointments committee of the cabinet on her appointment. At a press conference, the Congress alleged that since the current SEBI chairperson took office in 2017, she has not only been drawing a salary from SEBI but has also been holding an office of profit at the ICICI Bank, continuing to receive income from them to this very day. SEBI didn't make any comment on the allegations made by the Congress. Last week, the SEBI Chief stated that there has been a positive response to small and medium REITS (real estate investment trusts) and industry players came forward for regulations on such entities. Recently, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) implemented regulations for small and medium real estate investment trusts (SM REITS) aimed at significantly increasing investor interest in fractional ownership of real estate assets.

The department for promotion of industry and internal trade (<keyword id="19952901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DPIIT" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="DPIIT" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="DPIIT">DPIIT</keyword>) on Monday asked <keyword id="19957196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-goods" source="keywords">white goods</keyword> manufacturers to participate in large numbers to avail fiscal benefits under the <keyword id="19952889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive" source="keywords">production linked incentive</keyword> scheme for the sector as the response has been muted so far. Additional Secretary in the DPIIT Rajeev Singh Thakur said that the department has again reopened the application window for the PLI (production linked incentive) scheme for white goods (<keyword id="20360726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ACs" source="keywords">ACs</keyword> and LED lights). The application window is open from July 15 to October 12. "In the PLI in white goods scheme, somehow the response has been muted. ...Probably due to various reasons not sufficient response has come. So I request (the industry) to have a look and probably this time, you can consider (applying)," Thakur said at the CII Consumer Electronics and Durables Summit 2024 here. So far, 66 applicants with committed investment of Rs 6,962 crore have been selected as beneficiaries under the PLI scheme. The Union Cabinet had given approval for the PLI scheme for white goods for <keyword id="19914449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="keywords">manufacturing</keyword> of components and sub-assemblies of Air Conditioners (ACs) and LED lights on April 7, 2021. The scheme is to be implemented over a seven-year period, from 2021-22 to 2028-29, and has an outlay of Rs 6,238 crore. He added that the department can hold talks with the industry separately on issues like quality control orders and logistics. Thakur told the industry that the time is right to increase investments into the country as the government has enhanced its capex and taken steps to promote <keyword id="19996629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ease-of-doing-business" source="keywords">ease of doing business</keyword>. The public capex in the last 10 years is growing at a fast pace in areas like highways, expressway, ports, airports and railways, but the commensurate response of the private sector "somehow is not up to the expectation", he said. Earlier speaking at the event, DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia said that a lot of steps have been taken to promote ease of doing business, cutting down compliance burden and decriminalisation of minor offences. The government has also recently approved 12 industrial townships and the industry can look at investing there. He added that capital availability is not an issue now and the government has also provided protection to the industry from predatory imports. Schemes like PLI and semiconductor mission have been rolled out to promote manufacturing and "now we want the industry" to ensure that they have necessary collaborations in place for technology and investments. The industry should do collaborations not only to target the domestic market but also become part of global value chains. "That is an expectation we are having from the entire industry and I think industry will rise to meet these expectations... We have a huge demographic dividend and the industry should take advantage of this otherwise we will miss it," Bhatia added. He also said that there is no paucity of adequate skilled labour in the country and logistics costs too are coming down. On logistics, he cited examples of Amazon and Flipkart selling goods in the remotest part of the country. "I don't think industry should look at the current domestic demand only for collaborations. They should look at the future and export market also in addition to the domestic market," he said, adding expenditure on research and development is "abysmally" low and that needs to be enhanced. Mumbai, Mar 21 (PTI) US aircraft maker <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> has said India may require 31,000 pilots and some 26,000 mechanics over the next 20 years amid the growing order book of the aircraft original equipment manufacturers. Speaking on the sidelines of a CII event here, <keyword id="189173" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing-india" source="Orion">Boeing India</keyword> President <keyword id="7317809" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salil-gupte" source="Orion">Salil Gupte</keyword> also said the South Asian region is expected to remain the fastest growing market globally over the next 20 years. "India is going to need over 31,000 pilots and 26,000 mechanics over the next 20 years to take care of the aircraft coming in. This is as important a part of the Indian growth story as the aircraft (orders)," Gupte told reporters. He said considering India's air traffic growth, a lot of focus has to be on making infrastructure robust, both hard infrastructure which includes airports as well as critical infrastructure, which includes pilots, among others. It may be mentioned here that Tata Group-owned <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> had last month announced placing orders for a total of 470 planes with both Boeing and European aviation major <keyword id="6356166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword>. Last September, Boeing had projected India's air traffic growth at around 7 per cent through 2040. He also said that after coming out of the pandemic, the recovery in air travel demand has stunned the world and Boeing does not see any impact of the financial crisis on air travel growth. It is "too early to know what the consequences of the bank situation of the US and Europe and others are going to be. At this stage, we really see no slowdown in the demand for aviation," Gupte added. There is a huge market for narrow body aircraft for Boeing in India, he said and added that, " (as much as) 90 per cent of the market over the next 20 years is going to be a narrow body market and we expect we will be successful in competing for those every single campaign (aircraft order)." Gupte also emphasized that Boeing has a leadership position in the wide- body (twin aisle) aircraft segment globally and it will remain so in all the markets, including India.

Believing farmer producer organisations (FPOs) can transform agriculture, <keyword id="6357073" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="itc" source="Orion">ITC</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="1968926" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjiv-puri" source="Orion">Sanjiv Puri</keyword> on Friday said there are multiple opportunities in Indian agriculture today to achieve sustainable growth and productivity, given the grit and determination of Indian farmers and a proactive government. Speaking at the CII Agro Tech summit 2022 here, <keyword id="4903" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="puri" source="Orion">Puri</keyword>, who is also a Chairman of the agro tech, said agriculture is the lifeline of the economy and roughly half of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s workforce is engaged in this sector. However, its contribution to the gross value added (GVA) is only about 18 per cent with challenges such as low productivity and wastage, which translates to lower farm incomes. On challenges to the agriculture sector and the impact of climate change, Puri said: "Today the sector is faced with a challenge of epic proportions and it's not unique to this sector or to India. Last year many countries experienced events that dramatically reduced crop production. This year is no different, we have challenges in <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>, China and the US and recently in Indonesia. We have a neighbour whose agriculture sector has been devastated." India has its own share of problems -- first with wheat and now with rice. Although there is a great commitment towards net zero by countries and corporates, the reality is that extreme weather events will only multiply as articulated by the IPCC report, he said. Elaborating on the opportunities for agriculture, Puri said by 2050 given the population growth and better consumption patterns, India will need 60 per cent more food. There is also a movement towards healthier and more nutritious food products that give the opportunity for value addition. Agriculture being a provider of bio-diesel which tackles climate change is another opportunity in India, he said. "India has the largest arable land in the world and there is a huge opportunity to multiply and grow our productivity levels. We are self-sufficient today and we also have the distinction of having exported Agri products worth $50 billion but I think we can do much more." On the pathways that Indian agriculture can traverse towards sustainable growth and productivity, Puri said, "There are some important pathways available to us to surmount the challenges. "One is the power of FPOs and the power of aggregation. The government of India has taken very far-sighted steps to promote FPOs with multi-dimensional schemes to support capacity building and value addition. This is the pivot that will transform Indian agriculture." Farmer producer organisations can transform agriculture: ITC Chairman Sanjiv Puri

Mindtree, a <keyword id="147676" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="larsen" source="Orion">Larsen</keyword> &amp; Toubro Group company, is planning to set up a development centre in <keyword id="6354925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kolkata" source="Orion">Kolkata</keyword>, which could create employment opportunities for 15,000-20,000 people in the next four-five years, a company official said here on Wednesday. The IT services firm has already onboarded 1,700 people in its existing facility in the West Bengal capital so far, he said. "We have taken up 19 acres of space. Hopefully, things will start. The construction will be done by L&amp;T... the management is committed. We will set up a huge centre," Mindtree Ltd Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director <keyword id="214484" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="debashis-chatterjee" source="Orion">Debashis Chatterjee</keyword> said at ICT East organised by CII. The development centre can create employment opportunities for 15,000-20,000 people, he said. The IT company had in March announced the opening of its first development centre in Kolkata. Another IT company of the L&amp;T group, Larsen and Toubro Infotech (LTI) had in June also announced opening up of a new centre in the eastern metropolis. Larsen and Toubro board had in May announced a composite scheme of amalgamation of its two listed IT services firms to create a combined entity. Mindtree planning to set up development centre in Kolkata: CEO

New Delhi, Dec 9 () Amazon.in on Monday said it is focusing on three areas -- vernacular, voice and video -- to help merchants connect better with customers and increase their sales.
 Amazon India Vice President Seller Services Gopal Pillai said its seller base in the country has grown to over 5.5 lakh, and the company continues to work on a number of initiatives to bring more small and medium businesses on its platform.
 "We continue to focus on 3 Vs - vernacular, voice and videos to help sellers. We provide support in five vernacular languages for them, and are working on growing that," he said without disclosing more details.
 Amazon.in is locked in a bruising battle for market leadership in India against Walmart-backed Flipkart, which is also working on bringing more small and medium businesses on its platform.
 Earlier on Monday, Walmart announced that it will open 25 institute hubs in India over the next five years. 
 These hubs will train 50,000 entrepreneurs from the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector and are part of Walmart's "long-term commitment to India", Walmart International President and CEO Judith McKenna said.
 Talking about the company's plan, Pillai said it is organising Small Business Day on December 14.
 "The event will see participation from thousands of manufacturers, small brand owners, start-ups, artisans, and weavers and will encourage shoppers to discover and buy unique and hard-to-find products offered by small businesses and micro entrepreneurs," he said.
 The specially curated online event will offer customers the opportunity to discover and purchase products under its various programs such as Amazon Launchpad, Amazon Saheli, Amazon Karigar and others.
 Amazon also announced its partnership with CII to conduct awareness workshops and training in pre-identified locations to enable small and medium businesses start their e-commerce journey.
 Pillai said Amazon and the industry body will conduct various activities, including a series of awareness workshops, road shows, and e-commerce training, among other initiatives.
 These workshops will be held across India, focused on domestic MSMEs and potential exporters with a view to sensitise these MSMEs on the potential of enhancing market access by leveraging Amazon's global marketplace, he added.
 "E-commerce has played a significant role by lowering entrance costs and barriers to help MSMEs engage in international trade and Global Value Chains (GVC). The inclusiveness of GVC could be greatly enhanced by expanding and extending the benefits of e-commerce platforms to Indian MSMEs," CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said.
 CII and Amazon agreed to start with a series of workshops in five cities in identified MSME clusters of leather &amp; footwear, apparels and textiles, automobile, cycle parts and handicrafts, he added.
 The workshops will aim to raise awareness about e-commerce, and focus on how MSMEs can leverage e-commerce for their success, particularly for B2C (business-to-consumer) exports, he noted. SR RVK

New Delhi, Feb 21 () Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday took a dig at the industry for taking business chambers lightly, saying businessmen only approach these bodies when they face problems. Goyal said that many times he found at functions of CII, Ficci and Assocham only the current president, few past presidents, incoming presidents and possibly a few public spirited office bearers. "Where was the trade and industry and business community when the nation needed them?" he said at an AIMA event here. The minister requested AIMA President Sanjay Kirloskar and past president Harsh Pati Singhania, who were present at the function, to take this message to "all your colleagues and friends that associations are not to be taken lightly." "Industry bodies and businesses are not something which you only go to when you are in trouble. These are organisations which have a national duty and a national role to play," he added. Citing the example of the recent decision to increase import duty on toys, he said the toy industry has now become "super active". "Why did they not improve the standards of toys in the past, why did they not give our children better quality toys, why did we kill our domestic industry and become dependent on low quality inferior stuff coming from other countries," Goyal questioned. The government in the Union Budget raised import duty on toys from 20 per cent to 60 per cent. The toys associations are demanding rollback of the decision. "I often feel very sad when I go to CII, Ficci, Assocham programmes. I find the current president, few past presidents, and the incoming presidents, possibly a few officer bearers, if at all they are public spirited...I do not know where you all managed to get the rest of the room filled up. New Delhi, Dec 19 () DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra on Thursday expressed optimism that India will soon break into the top 50 in the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking.
 India jumped 14 places to the 63rd position in the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking released in October. India was ranked 142nd among 190 nations when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014.
 Mohapatra was speaking at an event organised by the CII.
 As per a release issued by the industry chamber, Mohapatra said a district-wise ease of doing business plan is slowly evolving in which the four local bodies will partake in improving the business climate and ease of living, along with the centre and the state government.
 Expressing optimism of India breaking into the top 50 in the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking soon, he sounded caution that once India does that, it will be in the league of advanced industrialised countries, where any incremental progress will require even stronger reform measures from the government.
 From next year onwards, the World Bank EODB rankings will include two more cities of Bengaluru and Kolkata apart from the existing cities of Delhi and Mumbai, he said.
 Chairman of CII National MSME Council Shreekant Somany said while the government's measures to improve the business sentiments have borne fruit, the need of the hour is to focus more on short-term measures, which have potential to deliver quick results for boosting investment.
 He also underlined a few measures, such as, enhancing capacity and efficiency of the alternative dispute mechanism, fast-track disbursal of delayed payments, aligning all the states into the Shram Suvidha Portal among others, to deliver on the front.
In its 'Doing Business' 2020 report, the World Bank had commended the reform efforts undertaken by the country "given the size of India's economy". RSN NKD MKJ
