And the prices could rise even further. ITC Limited, which <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/tobacco/cigarette-sales-will-continue-to-be-under-pressure-in-india-report/articleshow/61056049.cms">controls</a> over three-quarter of India’s cigarette market, showed that it’s revenue from the cigarettes sales in the last nine months fell 15% compared to the same time a year earlier. However, the earnings before interest and tax went up 9%; and it was still below expectations. Despite recent price hikes, ITC sold 8% more cigarette sticks in the last three months than last year’s winter. Broking house India Infoline believes there is room for further price hikes, an <a href="https://www.indiainfoline.com/article/general-editors-choice/why-did-itc-witness-slide-in-stock-price-despite-in-line-results-119012300668_1.html">estimated</a> 8% hike in each of the next two years until March 2021. Cigarette prices have been consistently rising over the last decade, more so since 2014. This was largely due to rise in government levies that aimed at pushing people to ditch the stick. Companies then passed on the rise in duties to smokers. Moreover, the rising cost of tobacco leaves has added pressure on ITC to hike prices. The cost of inputs, which includes tobacco, went up 20% in the last three months, according to company data. On the other hand, the number of smokers in India has come down drastically in the last decade. One cannabinoid, called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/what-is-thc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">THC</a>, is what mainly causes the psychoactive effects a person feels when they smoke or ingest the plant. THC attaches to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, as well as organs and muscle tissue, including the heart and blood vessels.While the smoke from cannabis has negative <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> effects, especially in the heart and lungs, it's also emerging that THC itself may have damaging properties — most notably in the heart and vascular system. According to a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6461323/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 study</a>, cannabis use can affect the heart in three major ways: <ul><li>Cannabis arteritis. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17309465" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heavy cannabis use</a> can inflame arteries, damage blood vessel walls, and reduce blood flow to the organs. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5398854/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cannabis arteritis</a> is a rare condition where the arteries leading to extremities such as toes or fingers are blocked due to inflammation, causing tissue death.</li><li>Cannabis-induced vasospasms. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6726350/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A vasospasm</a> is when the muscular wall of an artery contracts, causing the artery to narrow and decrease the amount of blood that can go through it.</li><li>Platelet aggregation. This involves tiny blood cells called platelets clumping together and <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-causes-blood-clots" target="_blank" rel="noopener">forming clots</a>, which can block blood vessels and reduce blood flow. </li></ul>A large <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(22)00443-3?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0092867422004433%3Fshowall%3Dtrue" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 study</a> confirmed some of these earlier findings and found even more evidence of weed's detrimental effects on heart health. Here are some of the highlights from this <a href="https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2022/04/marijuana-heart-disease.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a>: <ul><li>Cannabis users who smoked more than once a month were more likely to have a heart attack. </li><li>Frequent cannabis users were more likely than nonusers to have a heart attack before age 50. </li><li>THC caused inflammation and markers of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) in lab-grown endothelial cells. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK26848/#:~:text=Endothelial%20cells%20form%20a%20single,of%20the%20blood%2Dvessel%20wall." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Endothelial cells</a> are present in the lining of the heart and blood vessels.</li></ul><h2>Smoking weed is likely worse for your heart than edibles </h2>Smoking cannabis might be worse for your heart than taking it in other ways, such as through edibles, says <a href="http://scholars.uab.edu/display/navkaran" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nav Bajaj</a>, MD, a cardiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.This is because smoking cannabis <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-63120-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">releases compounds</a> such as hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxides, which, apart from the cannabinoids, may have additional negative effects on the heart and vascular system, Bajaj says. However, more research is needed to know the effects of all the compounds present in cannabis smoke. <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/how-long-do-edibles-last" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edible</a> users aren't entirely off the hook. According to a <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/9/6/1925/htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 study</a>, an edible form of THC was associated with causing a heart attack in one case study. What's more, edibles can deliver large amounts of THC to the body with a delayed effect, potentially causing more stress on the heart once it enters the bloodstream.<h2>Is smoking weed worse than <keyword id="12086838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cigarettes" source="Orion">cigarettes</keyword>?</h2>According to the <a href="https://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/smoking-facts/marijuana-and-lung-health.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Lung Association</a>, smoking cannabis has been shown to expose you to the same toxins, irritants, and carcinogens as smoking tobacco. Moreover, when smoking weed users often inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers, and that can lead to more tar exposure. <a href="https://www.lung.org/quit-smoking/smoking-facts/health-effects/marijuana-and-lung-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marijuana smoke</a> in the lungs has been associated with:<ul><li>Damage to the airway lining</li><li>Chronic bronchitis</li><li>Air pockets in the chest</li></ul>While Bajaj admits that smoke of all kinds can damage arteries and the heart, there's simply not enough large-scale studies to see how exactly weed compares to cigarettes on heart health.Note: For reference, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that cigarette smokers are <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/effects_cig_smoking/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two to four times</a> more likely than non-smokers to develop <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-causes-coronary-heart-disease" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coronary artery disease</a>. <h2>Cannabis and heart disease</h2>According to a 2019 <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15563650.2019.1601735" target="_blank" rel="noopener">systematic review</a>, cannabis may lead to a higher risk of heart disease. Out of the 33 studies included, 28 found that cannabis use can increase the risk of chronic cardiovascular disease and <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/16713-cad-acute-coronary-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acute coronary syndrome</a>, which involves a sudden rupture of plaque inside the coronary artery and may lead to a heart attack. In addition, Bajaj and his team published <a href="http://www.onlinejacc.org/content/75/3/320" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a study</a> in 2020 investigating how cannabis affects those with cardiovascular disease. An estimated 2 million people with cardiovascular disease consume cannabis, though Bajaj notes it's likely that number is underreported. In people with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases — or those involving a buildup of plaque in the arteries — cannabis use may increase the risk of harm, according to the study. When cannabis is smoked or ingested, the sympathetic nervous system is activated, increasing blood pressure and heart rate. According to Bajaj's study, this nervous system response can increase how much oxygen the heart needs. When combined with factors like plaque buildup in the arteries, this can lead to dangerous heart conditions, including a <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/myocardial-ischemia/symptoms-causes/syc-20375417" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heart attack</a>.<h2>Further research on cannabis and the heart is needed </h2>However, there is still a lot of conflicting research on how cannabis is related to certain cardiovascular diseases — especially heart rhythm disorders. For example, some studies <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5542986/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have found</a> that cannabis use is associated with a higher risk of arrhythmias like ventricular <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/what-is-tachycardia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tachycardia</a>, ventricular fibrillation, and atrial fibrillation. But others <a href="https://www.dicardiology.com/content/marijuana-use-does-not-increase-risk-arrhythmias-might-reduce-afib-risk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have suggested</a> that cannabis has no effect on ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, and that it may even reduce the risk of <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-afib" target="_blank" rel="noopener">atrial fibrillation</a>. In addition, some <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/marijuana-and-heart-health-what-you-need-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">experts</a> say that cannabis use does not pose a significant threat to people at little risk for heart disease. But another study found that young people who smoke cannabis for more than 10 days a month are <a href="https://newsroom.heart.org/news/cannabis-may-be-linked-to-strokes-and-heart-rhythm-disturbances-in-young-people?preview=58c8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2.5 times</a> more likely to have a <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-a-stroke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroke</a> than non-users — even if they don't use tobacco products. <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/marijuana/health-effects/heart-health.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Right after using cannabis</a>, research has shown that <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/marijuana-and-heart-health-what-you-need-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resting heart rate</a> increases and makes the heart pump harder — raising the likelihood of a heart attack.However, a large <a href="https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(22)00132-2/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 study</a> found that people who said they used cannabis five times a month had a lower resting heart rate than those who did not. This <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8378321/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">could be dangerous</a> because, in some cases, <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/what-is-bradycardia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bradycardia</a> — the term for a resting heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute — means that the heart cannot sufficiently pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Though there's still a lot we don't know about weed and cardiovascular health, Bajaj notes where initial data is pointing. "I would say, you know, there is evidence of some harm, but we need to prove that conclusively," Bajaj says.<h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Research is showing that cannabis use has negative effects on heart health. Specifically, it can cause inflammation in the heart and blood vessels, as well as platelet aggregation and plaque buildup. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"Sin <keyword id="11898253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="taxes" source="Orion">taxes</keyword>" are mostly paid by those struggling the most economically, according to a new paper.</li><li>Just 10% of households pay roughly 80% of the taxes on goods like alcohol, cigarettes, and soda.</li></ul>"Sin taxes" helped wean the US off of some bad habits. They now leave a small group of less educated and low-earning Americans with most of the bill.The US has a long history of taxing vices, with Alexander Hamilton proposing to tax alcohol in the <a href="https://guides.loc.gov/federalist-papers/text-21-30">Federalist Papers</a>. Today, these sin taxes cover goods like liquor and tobacco as well as more modern indulgences like soda. Modern sin taxes aim to raise the price of undesirable goods and services, nudging consumers away from them to boost overall public health.They're growing, too. The median tax on cigarettes more than quadrupled from 2000 to 2021, and House Democrats proposed doubling the federal tax on cigarettes in their 2021 reconciliation package.Yet rising <keyword id="13024691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sin-tax" source="Orion">sin tax</keyword>es might not be the easy moneymaker politicians hoped for. Just 10% of households account for 80% of sin tax revenue, according to a <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w29393">paper</a> from economists Christopher Conlon, Yinan Wang, and Nirupama Rao published by the <keyword id="12380325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="national-bureau-of-economic-research" source="Orion">National Bureau of Economic Research</keyword>. The taxes might not target specific income groups, but the people stuck paying them are largely those who can least afford them."Saying 'sin taxes are regressive' or 'sin taxes are progressive' largely misses the point," the team said. "There is much more variation among households within income groups than across them in purchases of sin goods."The group studied clusters of people who pay the most in sin taxes, ranging from those who spend on only alcohol, cigarettes, or sugary drinks to those who spend on all of them. Households in the "everything" and "smokers" clusters already pay 1.5% to 2% of their yearly income in sin taxes, according to the paper. They're also much more likely be from the lowest levels of income and education, as well as in the 55 to 64 age range.These two clusters alone pay 68% of the country's sin taxes, yet they only comprise 8% of US households, according to the paper. Before hiking tax rates higher, policymakers should consider whether higher rates would actually cut down on the purchases of such goods, or if they'd simply place an even larger economic drag on an already disadvantaged group, the team said.<h2>Heavy drinkers pose another sin-tax problem</h2>The paper also noted that not all sin-tax payers are low earners or poorly educated. The cluster of non-smoking "heavy drinkers," is disproportionately comprised of people from the highest income and education groups, according to the economists.Yet this group's habits create another problem for policymakers. The cluster and the "everything" group should be the source of the most external damage like drunk driving or domestic abuse, since alcohol consumption is closely tied to these negative events. Put simply, the idea is that higher taxes on alcohol lead to lower levels of drinking, which should have pretty good social outcomes.But targeting alcohol taxes is a bit trickier than taxes on other vices. Where heavy drinkers tend to buy alcohol in many forms, those in the "everything" group tend to buy mostly wine and beer.The diversity of alcohol sources purchased by heavy drinkers throws a wrench in policymakers' aim to curb consumption, the team said. The government's policy of taxing distilled spirits at a higher rate than beer and wine might work in areas where the heaviest drinkers mainly buy spirits, but the policy is far less effective in areas where they'll purchase alcohol in a range of forms. It also makes it harder to increase sin taxes on products preferred by people with the highest chance of enacting external damage, they added.Raising sin taxes, then, isn't as simple as politicians often make it out to be. The policies affect only a small sliver of the US population, and many in that group face overlapping burdens from a variety of sin taxes. And despite being created to cut down on dangerous behavior, gaps in the policy could keep the taxes from accomplishing that very goal.

By Fakir Hassen Johannesburg, May 3 () Smokers in South Africa are livid after the government reneged on an earlier announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that the sale of the cigarettes will be allowed from May 1 as the country moved down to level four of a new five-level strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.The sale of cigarettes was prohibited during the extended 35-day national lockdown that ended on April 30. The South African government said the decision to not allow the sale of cigarettes was taken after receiving comments from over 2,000 citizens."This was promoted by more than 2,000 public comments saying that they were opposed to the sale of cigarettes during the level 4 lockdown. We are a government that is responsive to people, even if it takes a decision and people say they don't like that decision," Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said."I don't think you can say the measures we are taking to save people's lives are draconian," she said.The minister also expressed concern that the manner in which cigarettes were shared by often being passed around between smokers was not compliant with social distancing requirements, as it promoted the spread of the virus.South Africa has so far reported 6,336 cases of coronavirus with 123 deaths, according to wrorldometer.The continued prohibition came amid strong advice against it from economists and industry lobby groups because of the huge loss in excise duty from the sale of tobacco products."The ill-thought prohibition of cigarettes is impoverishing the nation, enriching criminals and destroying the public's faith in the lockdown," said Tax Justice SA founder Yusuf Abramjee."The Government is throwing away 35 million Rands every day in taxes at a time when its citizens are starving.Meanwhile, criminals are pocketing that money by luring South Africa's 11 million smokers to the black market," Abramjee said.He said this is life-endangering economic sabotage that hands trade to the organised syndicates."Illicit cigarettes are flooding the market at massively inflated prices, delivering no tax to the country and actively increasing the movement of people – the very thing the lockdown is supposed to prevent," Abramjee said.The changed stance on tobacco sales overshadowed other major concessions during the level 4 lockdown.Citizens may now leave their homes for exercise, including cycling, in a radius of less than five kilometres from their homes, provided they have masks on at all times.Gyms are still not allowed to open.People who have been stranded in other provinces and could not return home or to their employment in their hometowns since the lockdown started have been granted a one-off concession to travel. Anger in S Africa as government reneges on sale of cigarettes during lockdown

New Delhi, Feb 20 () Tobacco farmers' body FAIFA on Thursday said the hike in taxes on cigarettes announced in the Budget 2020-21 will only increase the smuggled cigarette trade which, in turn, will affect livelihoods of millions of tobacco growers and farm workers. The Federation of All India Farmer Associations (FAIFA) said it had also appealed to Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman to have a "pragmatic approach" on cigarette taxation at a meeting on Wednesday evening. The hike in national calamity contingent duty (NCCD) on cigarettes proposed in the Budget is a major setback to the FCV tobacco farmers who have been fighting torrential and unseasonal rainfall this year in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, FAIFA said in a statement. "Indiscriminate increase of excise duty on cigarettes will result in reduction in legal cigarette production and this will reduce the tobacco purchases of domestic manufacturers, impacting market prices for farmers thereby putting more pressure on farmer's earnings and causing further stress," it said. Commenting on the hike in NCCD on cigarettes, FAIFA President Javare Gowda said, "This tax increase will provide a further boost to the smuggled cigarette trade and (lead to) decline in domestic demand, resulting in weak demand in the ensuing auctions." He further said the hike in NCCD was unexpected as several representations were made to the government to make it aware of the current situation of tobacco farmers and the ground-level realities of the struggles and losses that are being faced by them due to crop damage and also smuggled and illegal cigarette markets. In the Budget, Sitharaman had announced increasing NCCD on cigarettes, ranging from Rs 200-Rs 735 per thousand sticks, depending upon length of cigarette and on filter and non-filter basis. It was increased to 60 per cent from 45 per cent on smoking mixtures for pipes and cigarettes, while on other forms of smoking tobacco (other than smoking mixtures for pipes and cigarettes) and forms of chewing tobacco, it was increased to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. Gowda claimed that due to higher taxation, smuggled, illicit and contraband cigarettes along with WHO regulations, FCV production has come down to 210 million kg in 2019-20 from 325 million kg in 2013-14. It has resulted in "loss of more than Rs 5,000 crore (cumulative) to the FCV Tobacco Farming community", he added. In contrast, he said the market for illicit cigarettes is rising and has doubled from a level of 12.5 billion sticks in 2005 to 26.5 billion sticks in 2018 making India the fourth-largest and fastest-growing illegal cigarette market in the world. "Based on the current tax rates on cigarettes, it is estimated that the government loses Rs 13,000 crore in tax revenues per annum on account of illegal cigarette trade," Gowda claimed. RKL HRS

The shares of Cipla ended 0.62% lower on Friday. ITC On Friday, Consumer staples-to-hospitality major ITC reported an 18.23% drop in its consolidated net profit to ₹3,413.44 crore. The drop came despite a 2.18% growth in its revenue from operations to ₹13,147.81 crore during the period under review. Its FMCG segment delivered a decent sales growth of 15.4% (YoY), but wasn’t enough to offset the volume decline of 12% in its cigarette segment. The shares of ITC ended 0.54% lower on Friday. Divi’s Labs Drug firm, Divi’ ’s Laboratories, reported a 45.63% rise in its consolidated net profit to ₹519.59 crore for the quarter ended September 30, mainly on account of robust sales. Consolidated total income stood at ₹1,762.94 crore compared to ₹1,492.60 crore for the same period a year ago. The shares of Divi’s Labs ended 0.40% higher on Friday. Biocon Kiran Mazumdar Shaw-led Biocon’s subsidiary, Biocon Biologics, had received a ₹1,125 crore investment from Goldman Sachs. This capital injection will enable Biocon Biologics to make prudent investments in R&amp;D, high-quality manufacturing, as well as, establish a global commercial footprint, the company said. The shares of Biocon ended 0.17% higher on Friday. Lakshmi Vilas Bank Private sector Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) reported a net loss of ₹397 crore in the second quarter ended September 30 due to a rise in bad loans and provisions. Sequentially, the loss widened against ₹112.28 crore in the June quarter of this fiscal. The<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/banking-finance/made-significant-progress-with-clix-group-says-lakshmi-vilas-bank/2123468/"> bank also said</a> that despite logistical challenges arising due to the COVID-19 situation, the bank has made significant progress with Clix group for the proposed amalgamation of Clix Capital Service and Clix Finance India into the bank. The shares of Lakshmi Vilas Bank ended 0.64% higher on Friday. Voltas Electronics major Voltas reported 25.74% decline in consolidated net profit to ₹79.66 crore for the quarter ended September 30. The company also decided to restructure its business; it would transfer 100% of the B2B businesses to its wholly-owned subsidiary — Rohini Industrial Electricals Ltd (RIEL). The shares of Voltas ended 1% higher on Friday. Vedanta Vedanta reported a 61.8% decline in consolidated net profit to ₹824 crore for the quarter ended September 30, on the back of one-time tax expense. The decline came despite the stellar 33% growth in its revenue to ₹20,804 crore during the quarter under review. The shares of Vedanta ended 0.21% higher on Friday. Tata Consumer Products Tata Consumer Products reported an 18% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹234.33 crore for the quarter ended September 30, helped by an increase in domestic sales and volumes. Its revenue from operations was up 18.50% to ₹2,781.34 crore during the quarter under review. The shares of Tata Consumer Products ended 0.64% higher on Friday. IndiaMART InterMESH, Equitas SFB and VIP Industries IndiaMART InterMESH, Equitas SFB and VIP Industries are slated to report their second-quarter earnings today.
