Following a directive from 2018, FSSAI has revised the statutory warning to be placed on <keyword id="2332704" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alcohol-bottles">alcohol bottles</keyword>. After accommodating industry feedback with industry representatives, the FSSAI has directed that for alcoholic beverage bottles upto 200 ml should not be less than 1.5 mm whereas bottles above 200 ml in size, will have to carry the warning message in a font size of 3mm. All companies have to follow the guidelines and transition to the same by April 1, 2019. In 2018, India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, had directed alcohol companies to carry a statutory warning saying “Consumption of Alcohol is injurious to health” and “Be safe - Don’t drink and drive.” It also said the font size should be be less than three millimetres. India already ranks <a href="http://news">5th</a> in the world for the most pictorial warnings on cigarette packets. The Indian government had introduced regulations for alcoholic beverage bottles for the first time in 2018 to control drunk driving incidents in the country. According to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/with-46-lakh-traffic-violations-in-2018-fine-collection-doubled-to-rs-54-crore/articleshow/67596677.cms">reports</a>, fines from drunk driving in India in 2018 was around ₹6 crore. Earlier an NGO called Community Against Drunken Driving had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/s4hXlfb5BfcqSyILw1zF6I/FSSAI-mulls-pictorial-warning-on-liquor-bottles.html">requesting</a> the Delhi high court to include a pictorial warning on all alcohol bottles to spread awareness against drunk driving. However, the court had refused the same then, while also directing the FSSAI to look into the matter. Since 1995, the government has banned advertising of tobacco and liquor to ensure that the wrong message is not sent out the adverse health effects are known to people – which has also led to surrogate advertising in India. Not just cigarettes, alcohol bottles in India will have a loud and clear warning soon

35-year-old Tejas visits AIIMS hospital in India’s national capital New Delhi almost every month for his mouth cancer treatment. He stands in a long queue and sometimes sleeps on the floor the previous night to be the first one in the line the following day. 
 
A rickshaw-puller by profession, Tejas has been chewing ‘gutka’ since time immemorial to him. He said a friend had asked him to try it out for fun sake in his early teens. He doesn’t remember when the ‘fun’ turned into a ‘habit’. 
 
“It had become a time pass for me that you are chewing something and pulling the rickshaw. It became a habit and I could not do away with it. Last year I was diagnosed with mouth cancer and I had to completely stop it,” said Tejas as he bought medicines. 
 
Tejas is not alone. Like him, many people get addicted to smoking, chewing ‘gutka’ and other tobacco products are an early age. 
 As India marked <keyword id="6575676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="World-Tobacco-Day">World Tobacco Day</keyword> on May 31, people shared with us why it becomes difficult to stop. 
 
Shadab Malik, an officer-goer who is in his early 30s, said he was in college first year when he took first puff of the cigarette. 
 
“I was really tensed about my results and my friends, who used to smoke that time, asked to take a drag. I took two-three puffs. As I was an amateur, I did cough but it soon became a habit,” he said. 
 
When asked if never thought of quitting it, he said, “After one or two times, smoking became a daily routine for me. I used to smoke two cigarettes then. More cool boys became my friends and I liked it. So eventually it became a habit. Now I think of quitting it but it is really very hard.” 
 
On an average, Malik smokes fives cigarettes every day. 
 
“Generally it starts in teens as a fun thing with friends but soon becomes a habit. Youth takes to this due to peer pressure as a fad or it may also be a way to deal with stress. During exams or while coping work stress or stressful situations and challenges in life, people tend to smoke more and get dependent on it. Smoking no matter in whatever amount is harmful for human consumption,” said senior psychiatrist Dr. Gorav Gupta. 
 
Tobacco habits at a younger age impact health also. 
 
“There are multitude of problems faced by teenagers who indulge in smoking such as chronic cough, fatigue, breathlessness, decreased capacity to perform physical work and last but not the least predisposition to cancer of oral cavity to the lung,” added Dr. Gupta. 
 
According to India’s Health Minister J P Nadda, nearly eight to nine lakh people die every year due to diseases related to tobacco use. 
 
The government in 2010 said that nearly 900,000 Indians die every year of tobacco-related diseases and as per the International Tobacco Control Project estimates, this figure could rise to 1.5 million by 2020 if users do not stop it. 
 
To discourage any forms of tobacco, the government increased the size of health warnings on tobacco products. Nadda said that a slew of initiatives were being taken to reduce tobacco consumption including enactment of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act 2003. 
 
As per Canadian Cancer Society quoted by Reuters, India ranks 136th on a list of 198 countries that use such warnings to deter smokers. 
 
Meanwhile, regular smokers say it is quite difficult to stub it out. 
 
But as the old adage goes, where there is a will, there is a way, doctors say with focus and proper attention, people can do away with the addiction. 
 
“A person who is willing to quit should work hard and whole heartedly towards his goal to quit smoking. They should avoid cues and situations which are associated with smoking or tobacco consumption. Try avoiding friends with whom one frequently smokes. Likewise, at work instead of cigarette breaks take a short nap or a walk in the corridor,” said Dr Gupta. 
 
Dr Gupta expressed that one should be surrounded with positive people and maintain a journal to record how many times they broke the vow of not smoking. 
 
Some even go on to say that people selling tobacco products should be sensitive enough to see to whom they are selling the product to. 
 
“Everybody knows there is an age limit of 18 years but hardly anyone follows it. I have seen schoolchildren smoking. So, the enforcing agencies should also be proactive,” said Vikas Mehra.

From the packet snuggling our corner bakery items to plates from streetside food stalls, we intentionally or unintentionally indulge in a vast amount of plastic waste daily. To curb this issue and help the planet, India has attempted to place a <keyword id="6360810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plastic-ban" source="Orion">plastic ban</keyword> on the country many times, the most notable one being in 2022, which added more items to the list of single-use plastics (SUPs) with "low utility and high littering potential". Most recently, the <keyword id="50015" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nagaland" source="Orion">Nagaland</keyword> government issued a directive of their own banning SUPs in the state to tackle the environmental and ecological problems created by the polymer evil. This includes the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, and sale of any type of plastic bags (virgin or modified), irrespective of the material thickness. In addition, decoration thermocol, sticks, flags, candy sticks and ice-cream sticks made out of plastic have also been prohibited. Even plates, cups, glasses, forks, knives and the packing film around invitation cards, sweet boxes and cigarette boxes less than 100 microns have been banned. Any individual or establishment breaching this rule would be penalised heavily, the government remarked. Cities like Bengaluru have definitely seen a notable downtick in the availability of such SUPs since the ban, other states continue to take steps to address such issues. To enforce these crucial steps and prevent more metros from turning into Delhi-like gas chambers, more regular checks are paramount.

While cigarettes have been kept at 40% tax limit, experts believe, it should have been at 80%. Since these are a highly demerit product, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tobacco&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">40% of GST</a> indicates need for Rs 1902 crore of excise tax per 1,000 sticks in order to make sure the revenue from cigarettes stay intact. 
 
“The taxation on tobacco should also be rationalized by a duty structure which is a mix of fixed and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tobacco&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ad-valorem</a> duty rather than only fixed duty component. By doing this, the Government will be able to generate additional revenue to the tune 20K-30K crore per annum which can be used for social and other activities and will also be discouraging the consumption of tobacco as per the WHO norms. Meanwhile alternative crop for tobacco farmers should also be given top priority, so as to keep their interest,” said <keyword id="67987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dalmia">Sanjay Dalmia</keyword>, Chairman of <keyword id="4095501" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dalmia-group-of-companies">Dalmia Group of Companies</keyword> and also an expert in tobacco and pharmaceutical sector.

Warning: Cigarettes to cost more after budget?

The plastic industry picked up in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> only in the second half of the 20th century and made massive progress, booming and diversifying rapidly. With tens of millions of tons of plastic production and similar amounts of plastic waste flow, this non-biodegradable nuisance continues to choke the country’s precious land and water resources. From July 1, the central government has restricted the whole process of importation, production and sales of single-use plastic across India. The <keyword id="151298" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-environment" source="Orion">Ministry of Environment</keyword>, Forest and Climate Change of India said that the adverse impacts of littered single-use plastic items on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including in the marine environment, are globally recognised. “Addressing pollution due to single-use plastic items has become an important environmental challenge confronting all countries," said the MoEFCC in a statement. India generates nearly one crore tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which around 35 lakh tonnes remain single-use plastic. Only a tiny portion of this gets recycled, while the rest ends up in landfills and open spaces, adversely impacting flora and fauna and drastically affecting human health. Recently, scientists have even found traces of microplastics in human blood. Recognising the impact of plastic waste on the ecosystems, India declared this ban on single-use plastic from July 1 onwards. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="But, what is single-use plastic?" comment="subhead" text="But, what is single-use plastic?">But, what is single-use plastic?</cmsannotation> In standard terms, single-use plastic refers to the production and sale of disposable plastic items that are intended for only one-time usage. They are also known as disposable plastics, and the packaging industry frequently uses them. Examples are shopper bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and cutlery. Single-use plastic account for the most significant proportion of synthetic plastics, and a majority of such plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, they gradually disintegrate into smaller pieces called microplastics that seep into the underwater, polluting water and land ecosystems. Single-use plastic products (SUPPs) may be the definition of convenience. Yet, the harm they cause to the environment and human health through production, distribution, and littering makes them a serious threat. The ban in India is applicable to "earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice- cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers, and polystyrene for decoration." The minimum specified thickness for polythene carry bags was 75 microns already applicable from September 2021 but it would be 120 microns from December 2022. Plastic has moulded society in ways that make life easier and safer, from cell phones to utensils to food packaging. However, synthetic material has also left a negative impact on the environment and possibly human health, choking water bodies and several aquatic organisms. Plastic is a non-biodegradable item that eventually ends up in landfills that directly affect land, reducing the number of microbes that live beneath the soil surface and fertilise our lands. Plastic harm is just not limited to the land but has adversely affected aquatic marine life; India releases 1.5 crore tons of waste into the <keyword id="12350" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-ocean" source="Orion">Indian Ocean</keyword> each year, and the massive amount of persistent plastic in the marine debris harms the coastline and marine ecosystems, making the Indian ocean the second most polluted ocean in the world.

Ban on single-use plastic kicks in across India as the country recognises the choking impacts of plastic waste on the environment

Ahead of the total ban on Single Use Plastic (SUP) from July 1, about 200-odd brand owners, including several MNCs, and 26 importers of plastic have registered for the <keyword id="1104757" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="extended-producer-responsibility" source="Orion">Extended Producer Responsibility</keyword> (EPR) for plastic packaging under the amended <keyword id="398342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="plastic-waste-management" source="Orion">Plastic Waste Management</keyword> Rules 2016. As per the data from <keyword id="67999" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-pollution-control-board" source="Orion">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (CPCB), for year 2022-23, as many as 198 brand owners (BOs), and 26 importers (Is) have registered under the PIBO registration; the process is ongoing for 26 BOs, 29 producers (Ps) and 48 Is, while 76 BOs, 17 Ps and 38 Is have submitted their applications for registration. "Applications of 49 brand owners and 59 importers were rejected for multiple reasons," said a senior official from the CPCB, adding, "The process is on-going and we are reaching out to the industry constantly. There are laggards and there are willing companies." Not all companies use SUP for plastic packaging but the registration has been made compulsory for long term plastic management under the new Rules. The EPR, i.e. the Extended Producer Responsibility, means the responsibility of a producer for the environmentally sound management of the product until the end of its life. The <keyword id="151298" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-environment" source="Orion">Ministry of Environment</keyword>, Forest and Climate Change(MoEF&amp;CC) had notified the EPR guidelines vide Fourth Amendment to Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 on February 16. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced freedom for <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> from SUP in his 2019 Independence Day speech, the MoEF&amp;CC had brought in an amendment to the Plastic Waste Management (PWB) Rules in August 2021 that prohibited manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale &amp; use of SUP from July 1, 2022. These items include plastic sticks that are used in ear buds, balloons, candy, ice-cream; cutlery items such as plates, cups , glasses, forks, spoons, knives, trays; packaging / wrapping films such as that used for sweet box, invitation cards, cigarette packets, and other items such as plastic flags, PVC banners of less than 100 microns, polystyrene for decoration. The minimum specified thickness for polythene carry bags was 75 micron already applicable from September 2021 but it would be 120 microns from December 2022. The CPCB has no actual data for the average plastic waste generation in cities and considers it to be around 6.92 per cent of the municipal solid waste (MSW) as per the 2015 report 'Assessment &amp; Characteristics of Plastic Waste generated in 60 cities'. 200 Indian companies register for extended producer responsibility for plastic packaging

<ul><li>The Indian Institute of Technology is working aggressively to develop a mobile application that can track all unhealthy activities of the users including smoking. </li><li>The research team has claimed the app will not only detect when a user smokes but will also send warning signals for customised intervention. </li><li>However, the application is dependent solely on the will of the users to <keyword id="17797" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quit-Smoking">quit smoking</keyword>. </li></ul>Even though the packet of cigarettes comes up with dire warnings and graphic images, most people addicted to smoking struggle to quit. Now, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is developing a mobile application that can help people kick the habit — but only if they are willing to do so, The Economic Times <a href="https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/m.economictimes.com/news/science/iit-kharagpur-developing-app-to-help-smokers-quit/amp_articleshow/67135030.cms">reported</a>. The mobile app is sensor-based technology that will alert users whenever they try to light a cigarette. The research team says it is aware that merely sending warnings to the users may not sufficient and an intervention is required to discourage the smoker. Thus, the app will also send an alert to a friend or relative or the doctor of the user so that he can be convinced for not smoking. The app will first feed all the data of the users by creating a smoking behaviour profile. It will then analyse the effects of smoking on the user’s life followed by sending warnings about its impact on his or her health. The automated recognition feature of the mobile application is supposed to track down the addictive and depressive behaviour of the users, according to the research team. The technology reportedly can monitor body movements and predict both good and bad daily habits including such as smoking or drinking enough water. Much like a fitness app, it also shares information on sleeping patterns that impact health. The research team is also filing for a patent for its commercial release.
