<ul class="summary-list"><li>Chyler Leigh answered some burning questions about "The Way Home" season finale, which aired on Sunday. </li><li>She also shared her thoughts on "Grey's Anatomy" and Ellen Pompeo's decision to step back. </li></ul><p>Chyler Leigh was acting in Hollywood for more than a decade before she captured hearts as Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) <a href="https://www.insider.com/every-greys-anatomy-character-ranked-by-episodes-2020-11">little sister Lexie Grey on "Grey's Anatomy."</a> Lexie's photographic memory, love of peanut butter cups, and tragic death made her so beloved among her colleagues that they eventually named Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after her — but Leigh wasn't done making an impact.</p><p>She next played Supergirl's (Melissa Benoist) sister Alex Danvers for <a href="https://www.insider.com/supergirl-series-finale-kara-danvers-lena-luthor-supercorp-fans-2021-12">six seasons on the CW hit "Supergirl, </a>which inspired her to share more about her personal life with fans after Alex came out as queer.  </p><p>"My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth," she wrote in an essay for Create Change about the scene according to <a href="https://ew.com/tv/supergirl-chyler-leigh-alex-coming-out-story/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Entertainment Weekly</a>. "Though they don't exactly match my personal dialogue, the heart behind it surely did." </p><p>Leigh is currently leading the Hallmark Channel's first scripted TV series, "The Way Home," playing Kat Landry, a woman who fled her home in Canada after the baffling disappearance of her brother Jacob (Remy Smith) and the death of her father, Colton (Jefferson Brown) in the 90s.</p><p>Amid a divorce more than 20 years later, she returns home with her teenage daughter<strong> </strong>Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) to face her estranged mother Del (Andie MacDowell) after decades of silence between them. She's hoping to heal, but as fans now know, a mysterious <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/time-travel-possible-changing-past-isnt-physics-says-2020-9">pond that facilitates time travel</a> opens old wounds for all of the Landry women, including Alice. </p><p>Leigh spoke with Insider about the show's heartbreaking, plot-twisting finale, from reflecting on the end of Kat's romance with her childhood best friend Elliot (Evan Williams) to giving us hits about where Kat travels to in those last few seconds.</p><h2>Leigh says she had an 'emotional explosion' after filming a heartbreaking scene in the finale. </h2><div type="image" title="Sadie Laflamme-Snow, Chyler Leigh, and Evan Williams in &quot;The Way Home.&quot;" height="3744" width="4992" msid="99071174" hostid="261" sizebytes="2244220"></div><p><strong>I have to start with those last few minutes</strong> <strong>of the season finale and Kat's revelation that she thinks she knows where her missing brother Jacob may have disappeared to after hearing the family dog Finn bark. What does that spark in her, and where does she go?</strong></p><p>Kat's a reporter, so her ability of deduction and putting all those pieces together, you can see the way that her mind works. Even if you go back, which we've heard from a lot of our fans saying that they're watching the episodes over again, so they kind of can pick up on those little nuances. And you hear all the significant times that Finn has barked, putting that together and seeing what that looks like....We've been putting those little nuggets in there all along.</p><p>So now that it's all flooding back, or at least being discovered at this point, we see pretty quick when we go into next season, that whole mystery of, "Okay. How did she get there? What is the pond? When did the pond start? </p><p>Everybody has been thinking the girl from the 1800s that we introduced in the pilot is Alice. And so, I love that moment, the sweep the rug out of everybody's feet moment, when we reveal it's actually Kat.</p><p><strong>Backing up a little bit, it was devastating to watch Kat and Elliot break up, knowing that he's been pining for her in different time periods, even while she was married to her husband Brady. What was that breakup like to film? </strong></p><p>After we were done with the scene, Evan and I spent about 10 minutes crying together at the house on the set. We went in there in between takes because it was freezing. And we literally just sat there and we cried and we hugged for about 10 minutes because we wanted to give our absolute all. And it was a beautiful scene in and of itself, but I think Evan's performance is so devastating and so amazing. And he puts so much thought into everything that he does and so much preparation, and it's so intentional every choice that he makes.</p><p> And it was exhausting and amazing, and I was so just grateful for him and for all of our cast who puts a thousand percent into every moment that we film, whether you're on camera or you're not, because we, too, love this show so much. We're so invested. So those emotions that you're seeing, because we love the show so much and we love these characters, it was real.</p><p><strong>What's the most valuable lesson you've learned so far from working with Andie MacDowell? </strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Andie MacDowell on &quot;The Way Home.&quot;" height="2557" width="3409" msid="99071175" hostid="261" sizebytes="1091658"></div><p>I think one of the greatest things that I've learned from Andie is accepting yourself where you are right now. And she's spoken about it. For <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-andie-macdowell-decided-to-go-gray-hair-2021-7">her to have gone gray or silver with her hair is a bold move</a>. It's not an easy thing, especially in the industry when you are so heavily scrutinized for every choice that you make, or for aging in general, especially women. The pressure of that is so challenging, and we can all relate to that in one way, shape, or form.</p><p>And she's so stunningly beautiful in life. It's incredible. That's also a testament to who she is on the inside because she just glows no matter what.</p><p>Even for myself, I'm going to be 41 next month, and so there's acceptance. Hormones hit, my body's changed. I feel like I hit my 40th birthday and, "Whoa. Where did that come from?"As we naturally age and our bodies change and whatnot, she's helped me a lot with just accepting myself where I am and feeling better about who I am in an industry that, as I said, is not very forgiving towards that in so many ways.</p><h2>Authentic representation of the LGBTQ community is important to Leigh</h2><div type="image" title="Chyler Leigh on &quot;The Way Home.&quot;" height="3740" width="4987" msid="99071176" hostid="261" sizebytes="1576922"></div><p><strong>I know LGBTQ representation is especially important to you after "Supergirl." What can we expect to see as far as queer representation in season two of "The Way Home?" </strong></p><p>Because of being on "Supergirl" and my character's coming out and that whole storyline, I was just so adamant about being able to portray that as authentically and genuinely as possible. So for that to carry over into Hallmark, again, where you don't really get to see that very often, I'm just so incredibly grateful for that opportunity.</p><p>To be able to have the license to do stuff like that on "The Way Home," we're definitely taking advantage of that. To make sure that we have queer representation from all aspects — even if it's a crew, if it's from a character, now in the writer's room, which we're incorporating for season 2, that perspective and being able to explore those things, it's equally important to all of us.</p><div type="image" title="Chyler Leigh, Andie MacDowell and Sadie Laflamme-Snow attend &quot;The Way Home&quot; premiere in January 2023." height="2382" width="3175" msid="99071177" hostid="261" sizebytes="343786"></div><p><strong>And as for "The Way Home" season two, what can you tease about what fans can expect? </strong></p><p>I'm excited about our exploration of the 1800s and what that's going to look like. And so, for that, I was asked if I had experience riding a horse, and I was like, "Ooh, that's cool." But being able to see Jacob where he is and what happened, and find the mystery. But also the mystery of how, who, or what is the pond, really? Who discovered it? Who was that first person that went through there? Where did they go? What did that look like initially? Why is Kat being chased and being called the White Witch, and why does she look so different?</p><p><strong>As Ellen Pompeo's former on-screen sister, what are your thoughts on her <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-shouldnt-try-surviving-without-ellen-pompeo-2023-2">departure from "Grey's Anatomy"</a> as a regular and the future of the show? </strong></p><p>I'll be honest, I haven't followed a whole bunch of stuff for "Grey's." She's been there and invested for how many years now?</p><p>The fact that they can come up with so many different medical cases over these 72 years the show's been on is pretty remarkable. So you chalk that up to the creative team, and also respecting whatever Ellen's choice was and the motivation behind it. That's a hell of a long time to sit and invest into a character. Whatever that decision is, you've got to respect [her]. The actress announced on social media Thursday night that she'll be reprising her role as <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-actors-who-left-2018-10">Dr. Addison Montgomery</a> in season 18 of the hit ABC drama.</p><p>Walsh teased her return in a clever <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@katewalsh?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1ebapp=v1">video on TikTok</a> before announcing more details on the official <a href="https://twitter.com/GreysABC/status/1433580291046588424">"Grey's Anatomy" Twitter account</a>.</p><p>"That's right, my loves. Dr. Addison Montgomery is coming back to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, and I'm so excited to be home again joining Shonda, Ellen, and the rest of the incredible cast this season," she said. "Just wait until you see what she has in store for you."</p><p>Walsh will return for <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/09/greys-anatomy-kate-walsh-reprise-role-addison-season-18-1234826737/">a multi-episode arc,</a> according to Deadline. There is no official word yet on when Addison will make her "grand return," but IMDb currently has her slated to appear on the <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005532/">first three episodes of the new season</a>, so it appears she may show up in the premiere. </p> <p>We first met Addison on season one of the show, when she showed up in Seattle to announce to Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) that she was staying in town to fix their marriage. This was a shock to his then-girlfriend Dr. Meredith Grey (<keyword id="12020199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ellen-pompeo" source="Orion">Ellen Pompeo</keyword>), who had no idea he was married. </p><p>Walsh appeared on "Grey's Anatomy" for three seasons before Addison moved to California and landed the <a href="https://www.insider.com/jesse-williams-greys-anatomy-japril-spinoff-possibility-tribeca-interview-2021-6">medical drama's first spinoff</a>, "Private Practice." Her last appearance on "Grey's" was for an alternate reality episode in season eight titled "If/Then."</p><p>"Private Practice" ran on ABC for six seasons before Addison walked off into the sunset with her adopted son Henry and second husband Dr. Jake Reilly (Benjamin Bratt).</p><p>Walsh joins a long list of "Grey's Anatomy" alums who have reprised beloved roles on the show in the past few seasons. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Ellen Pompeo's final episode of "Grey's Anatomy" as a series regular aired February 23. </li><li>I don't like her character Meredith Grey, but the show shouldn't even try to go on without her. </li></ul><p>I'm no <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-meredith-grey-best-worst-moments-ellen-pompeo-2023-2">fan of Dr. Meredith Grey</a>. In "Grey's Anatomy," she's a cold, <a href="https://www.insider.com/9-nepo-babies-that-raise-the-profiles-of-their-parents-2022-12">entitled nepo baby</a>, who cares about her patients but maintains a steely exterior. Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, says she helps and mentors women, but at times she's also been the show's "mean girl" who only supports those in her inner circle, which changes on a whim.</p><p>On Pompeo's final episode as a series regular, which aired on February 23, Meredith leaves Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (named in part for Meredith's sister Lexie Grey) to do Alzheimer's research at the Catherine Fox Foundation. Her final turn in the operating room ends with a patient dying followed by a pitiful, slapdash send-off party complete with sparkling apple cider and the wrong cake.</p><p>The episode, titled "I'll Follow the Sun," shows that as much as things change, they also stay the same. Patients die in surgery. Busy colleagues throw underwhelming office events. And even though Meredith's leaving the hospital that essentially raised her, but she'll be back (Pompeo <a href="https://tvline.com/2023/02/16/ellen-pompeo-greys-anatomy-season-19-return-date-meredith-abc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">confirmed she'll return for at least the season 19 </a>finale).</p><div type="image" title="meredith grey season 17 greys anatomy beach" height="1080" width="1440" msid="98428845" hostid="261" sizebytes="37132"></div><p>In the meantime, "Grey's Anatomy" is trying to fill its Pompeo-sized hole with yet another new class of interns. Meredith's half-sister Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary, who <a href="https://www.insider.com/every-greys-anatomy-character-ranked-by-episodes-2020-11">joined the cast in season 11</a>) and her sister-in-law Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone, whose character moved to Seattle on season 10) will likely take on more responsibility to maintain the show's "family vibes." But the truth is, no matter how hard it tries, "Grey's Anatomy" will not last much longer without Meredith Grey. </p><p>As anyone with access to the internet probably knows by now, Meredith is the last member of the original intern class from <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-shonda-rhimes-old-men-medical-drama-fail-sex-2022-10">Shonda Rhimes' pilot to leave Grey Sloan</a>. She's literally and figuratively the last bit of magic to disappear from the series. (The original series characters Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, and Cristina's names are an acronym for "magic").</p><p>Even though I never liked the character of Meredith Grey, Pompeo's exit as a series regular is bigger than any other cast member's exit. She wasn't just any series regular, she was the core of the show's identity. Her departure means that the show now has completely new DNA, so it might as well have a new title, too. </p><p>"Grey's Anatomy" has tried over the years to fill nearly every gap, and sometimes it worked. But most of the time, it didn't. Character departures have caused trauma for viewers and left us with scars, and there's only so much pain we'll endure.</p><h2>There's a limit to the amount of change fans can tolerate</h2><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo." height="1800" width="2400" msid="98428847" hostid="261" sizebytes="1319936"></div><p>After Dr. Derek Shepherd's (Patrick Dempsey) death on the show in <a href="https://time.com/3834589/grief-counselor-mourn-fictional-character-death/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015, Time spoke</a> to the clinical director of the Seleni Institute for Women, Christiane Manzella, about the grief viewers were feeling from his loss.</p><p>"Human beings love stories and making connections, even if it's to fictional people. We create meaning and then experience actual grief when that connection is broken," she said.</p><p>Still, the reason why so many "Grey's" fans have stuck with or come back to the show after so much heartache is the overwhelming sense of comfort the show provides.</p><p>When my favorite characters Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) died as a result of a plane crash in season eight, I boycotted the show in a fit of rage, but eventually returned and felt more connected to the show than ever thanks to a storyline <a href="https://www.insider.com/sarah-drew-christmas-movie-lifetime-greys-anatomy-2022-11">involving Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew)</a> and Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams).</p><div type="image" title="Sarah Drew, Jesse Williams, and Ellen Pompeo" height="1500" width="2000" msid="98428849" hostid="261" sizebytes="108436"></div><p>After Drew and Jessica Capshaw (who played Dr. Arizona Robbins) were written off in 2018, I left with them and never expected to return. I eventually did, when <a href="https://www.insider.com/japril-jesse-williams-sarah-drew-fans-earned-greys-anatomy-spinoff-2022-2">Drew returned to help Williams</a> exit. </p><p>As humans, we can only adapt to change so much before we decide we've had enough. My story is probably just one of the thousands of stories that fans around the world have about why they've grown increasingly tired of a show they once rooted for time and time again.</p><p>Narratives have a natural end. <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-pompeo-greys-anatomy-impact-medicine-betr-remedies-2021-12">Pompeo herself told me in 2021</a> that she used to often ask people attached to "Grey's," "what story are we going to tell?" and they'd respond, "Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.'"</p><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo" height="1503" width="2004" msid="98428852" hostid="261" sizebytes="95924"></div><p>Network executives might not care about storylines and character development as much as raking in gazillions of dollars, but thousands of fans who have grown up with the show do. I don't like Meredith Grey, but as a character who defined "Grey's" for 19 seasons, she still held a place in my heart, a heart that's stretched to capacity as new characters come and go and come and go. We'll I'm done. Why should I stretch my heart for a show that's lost its own?</p><p>"Grey's Anatomy" is dead. Even though a couple of the original ancillary characters like Dr. Richard Webber (Jim Pickens Jr.) and Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) remain, a new class of interns can't duplicate the magic. It's not my show anymore and it hasn't even <a href="https://deadline.com/2017/08/shonda-rhimes-deal-netflix-leave-abc-studios-1202148014/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">been Rhimes' show since she left in 2017.</a> </p><p>I wish we could all just accept that by pouring some actual champagne out for all characters we loved, and move on.</p><p>"Grey's Anatomy" airs  Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.</p>

They couldn't resist each other and eventually started dating.</p><h2>Season 1, episode 9: Meredith learned she was the 'other woman' </h2><p>On the "Grey's Anatomy" season one finale, <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-addison-meets-dereks-kids-ultimate-forgiveness-2021-10">Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh)</a> arrived at Seattle Grace to let Derek know she was going to fight for their marriage. When they were interrupted, Meredith hastily got dressed and lost her panties, which Addison found later in Derek's suit. She pinned them to the hospital bulletin board.</p><p>Also in season three episode one, Derek told Meredith he was in love with her even though he was with Addison and she was dating Finn, the vet (played by Chris O'Donnell).</p><h2>Season 3, episode 25: It was so over between Meredith and Derek</h2><h2><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo on &quot;Grey's Anatomy&quot; season three episode 25." height="1577" width="2103" msid="98131923" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Meredith and Derek eventually left their respective partners and began dating during season three. But external pressures, like the deaths of <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-cool-things-to-know-about-meredith-grey-2021-9">Meredith's mother Ellis (Kate Burton)</a> and stepmother Susan (Mare Winningham), combined with Derek's desire to be chief of surgery caused a strain. </p><p>At her best friend Dr. Cristina Yang's (Sandra Oh) wedding, Meredith announced that Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) had left Cristina by saying "It's over, so over." But that didn't prevent fans of the pairing, known as "Supercorp" (a portmanteau of "Supergirl" and "Luthor Corp," the Luthor-family company where Lena works), from hoping for five years for a potential romance.</p><p>Since Lena was first introduced in season two as the sister of Superman's iconic archnemesis, Lex Luthor, she and Kara were portrayed as close friends who sometimes relied on each other to stay alive. The series even dedicated entire <a href="https://decider.com/2020/02/23/supergirl-episode-100-supercorp-lena-luthor-kara-danvers/">alternate-universe episodes</a> to depicting how the two characters' personalities changed if they lived without each other.</p><p>Lena, unlike Lex, is trying to do good in the world despite her family's negative influence. She befriends Supergirl and becomes a beloved friend to the superhero, second only to Kara's sister, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh). </p><p>But certain viewers saw more than friendship in the bond between Kara and Lena.</p><p>Romantically coded dialogue, longing looks, and pivotal episodes dedicated to defining how much Kara and Lena meant to each other led many Supercorp shippers — fans who wanted Lena and Kara to be together romantically — to believe that the only end point that made sense was a confession of love between the two.</p><div type="image" title="Katie Mcgrath as Lena Luthor and Melisa Benoist as Kara Danvers" height="848" width="1131" msid="88189107" hostid="261"></div><p>The "Supergirl" writers did deliver an intimate heart-to-heart between the women — Kara gets the strength from Lena to tell the residents of National City that she, the CatCo reporter Kara Danvers, is also Supergirl — but it was explicitly a conversation between two "friends."</p><p>Even though "Supergirl" dedicated its 100th episode to proving that Kara and Lena needed each other to thrive in any universe, during <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvqlGjbTLCw">the series finale</a> Kara confessed, "Of all the friends I have ever had, you have pushed me the most, challenged me the most."</p><p>Lena replied, "You've made me a better person."</p><p>While a sweet moment on the surface, some longtime viewers told Insider they were left feeling bitter about the ending for Kara and Lena, and betrayed by writers they believed had queerbaited them for years.</p><h2>'Supergirl' introduced viewers to Superman's cousin</h2><p>Set in the DC universe, "Supergirl" follows the National City adventures of Superman's cousin, Supergirl. Much like her cousin, Kara spends her days as a reporter and moonlights as a superhero, saving the city from seemingly endless threats.</p><p>Like "The Flash" and "Arrow," other shows on <keyword id="12168283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-cw" source="Orion">The CW</keyword> that take place in the same DC universe, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-cw-supergirl-melissa-benoist-suit-with-pants-details-interview-2019-10">"Supergirl"</a> had plenty of subplots dealing with Kara's personal life and romances. While Kara's sexuality was never specified, she was only shown in romances with male characters.</p><p>Kara's friend and coworker James Olsen (a version of the classic comics character Jimmy Olsen, a pal of Superman and Lois Lane) was her potential love interest during the first season, which premiered in 2015 on CBS before the show moved to The CW for season two. Once the show changed networks, the writers introduced fellow alien Mon-El (Chris Wood) as Kara's potential partner.</p><p>But season two also introduced Lena, who many fans thought was a better romantic partner for Kara than any of the men with whom she'd been paired.</p><h2>Fans noticed the chemistry between Kara and Lena</h2><p>Some viewers say they saw the chemistry between Lena and Kara from the start. </p><p>Speaking with Insider, Supercorp fans named multiple moments that felt romantically coded. But many had one specific moment they called their favorite.</p><p>It happens at the end of season two, episode 12, "Luthors," when Lena is thanking Kara for sending Supergirl to save her from her mother, Lillian Luthor (Brenda Strong), and a villain called Metallo (Frederick Schmidt). </p><p>"Supergirl may have saved me, but Kara Danvers, you are my hero," Lena tells Kara. She adds that she's responsible for filling Kara's office with flowers. </p><p>That "Luthors" scene resonated with one 24-year-old fan in the UK, who wished to be referred to as Zari for privacy. Zari, who's made Supercorp merchandise and art for other fans, credited Supercorp with pushing her to get back into drawing after a suicide attempt damaged her arms and hands, and almost prevented her from pursuing an art career.</p><div type="image" title="Supergirl and Lena sitting on clouds" height="1378" width="1378" msid="88189109" hostid="261"></div><p>Zari said she couldn't help but view the sentiment in the "Luthors" scene as more than platonic. Kara was romantically linked to Mon-El at the time, but Zari said she felt the scene "was just gay." </p><p>"This was the most romantic thing that had happened," she said. She added that she watched the episode with her girlfriend. "We were just like, 'Whoa, is this really happening?'"</p><h2>Some 'Supercorp' fans said they felt the writers queerbaited them in many scenes </h2><p>Queerbaiting, <a href="https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/queerbaiting">as defined by Lexico</a>, is "the incorporation of apparently gay characters or same-sex relationships" into visual media, typically movies or <keyword id="11898468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv" source="Orion">TV</keyword> shows, "as a means of appealing to gay and bisexual audiences while maintaining ambiguity about the characters' sexuality."</p><p>Ultimately, an accusation of queerbaiting is an accusation that writers are using a queer story to draw in an audience, but they don't make that romance explicit.</p><p>Another hit CW show, "Supernatural," was <a href="https://www.insider.com/supernatural-last-episode-when-destiel-queerbaiting-end-fandom-tumblr-2020-11">also accused</a> of queerbaiting because of the relationship between Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins).</p><p>Dean's sexuality can be read as <a href="https://www.tvguide.com/news/supernatural-queerbaiting-destiel-1089286/">ambiguous</a> on the show, and his relationship with Castiel takes on more importance as time goes on. Castiel even tells Dean he loves him in a November 5, 2020, <a href="https://dailyillini.com/opinions-stories/2020/12/13/opinion-destiel-is-canon-yet-fans-are-still-upset/">episode</a> from the final season, though that doesn't <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvxzb4/let-the-hot-dudes-kiss-why-supernatural-fans-lost-it-at-the-series-finale">end well</a> for him. The relationship never goes further than that.</p><p>These two CW shows aren't the only ones that have been accused of queerbaiting. Shows on various networks, including "Riverdale," "Sherlock," "How to Get Away With Murder," and "Pretty Little Liars," have been accused of queerbaiting by fans and critics.</p><p>Despite the accusations of queerbaiting in Kara and Lena's relationship, "Supergirl" isn't devoid of LGBTQ representation.</p><p>The show has two queer relationships, or "ships" for short: Alex and Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai), as well as Nia Nal (Nicole Maines) and Brainiac "Brainy" 5 (Jesse Rath).</p><div type="image" title="&quot;Supergirl&quot; cast" height="2957" width="3942" msid="88189111" hostid="261"></div><p>But no matter how many other queer ships there are on the show, one 28-year-old Supercorp fan from Louisiana, who wished to be identified as Megan for privacy, told Insider that she credited Supercorp, specifically, with getting her through a period of intense trauma.</p><p>Megan said she was having suicidal thoughts after her grandmother died and her mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. The diagnosis happened around the time her girlfriend was killed by a drunk driver, she said. Megan put off acting on those thoughts after discovering "Supergirl" and Supercorp via Tumblr. She said she wanted to stay alive so she could see what would happen next in the fictional relationship.</p><p>"I was losing those closest to me, and I kind of stopped caring about everything. And there was a part of me that just wanted to be with the ones I loved the most, and they weren't here anymore," she said. Supercorp gave her something to care about again until she could ask for the help she needed. </p><p>Megan said that "the beauty of life" is that "the smallest, seemingly inconsequential things can change everything."</p><p>Though she believed Supercorp saved her life, Megan still thought the entire relationship was an example of queerbaiting.</p><p>"It's like they're so entangled in each other's lives, but they were written to be that way. They're not autonomous characters," she said of Lena and Kara. "I mean, the hundredth episode showed that without each other, then they both kind of cease to exist in a certain way."</p><p>Demitra Zatica, the public-relations moderator of Supercorp Zine, which <a href="https://supercorpzine.tumblr.com/FAQ">describes itself</a> as a place "created to celebrate the love" between Lena and Kara, said she was hesitant to watch "Supergirl" after learning about Lena and Kara's relationship because of the storyline on another CW show, "The 100," where Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey), a popular queer character, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/bury-your-gays-why-100-877176/">was killed</a>.</p><p>Lexa's death sparked an outcry among fans and widespread discussions about the harmfulness of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0fZjSluzI8">"Bury Your Gays"</a> trope, in which LGBTQ characters are disproportionately killed in devastating or traumatic ways.</p><div type="image" title="&quot;Supergirl&quot; cast at ComicCon" height="1933" width="2584" msid="88189113" hostid="261"></div><p>Lena and Kara survived the series finale, but Zatica told Insider before it aired that she believed the characters would be stronger if they were depicted as a romantic "power couple."</p><p>Representatives for the CW did not respond to Insider's request for comment on accusations of queerbaiting in "Supergirl."</p><p>Although the cast of "Supergirl" and its writers have publicly maintained that Kara and Lena are just friends, it hasn't stopped the actors behind the ship, Benoist and McGrath, from acknowledging Supercorp fans, signing fan art of the pairing, and accepting copies of Supercorp magazine that were gifted to them, said <a href="https://youtu.be/C2w2GBXd_Pg">"Televised Podcast,"</a> a podcast that recaps "Supergirl" and other TV shows, and fans Insider spoke with.</p><h2>Supercorp fans held out hope that the show would ultimately make their ship canon, but it never happened</h2><p>Many Supercorp shippers weren't expecting something as big as a kiss in the finale when Lena and Kara discussed how they'd affected each other's lives.</p><p>But the writers using the word "friends" in the scene's script was offensive to some viewers, including Amanda Exposito, a Supercorp fan from Brazil. </p><p>"It is a shame that after all these years they really ended Supercorp's story with 'friends,' the same word that has been used on the show, that has been used by homophobic fans and actors since the beginning to avoid discussing the love of two women," she wrote in an email to Insider after the finale aired. </p><p>Zari was similarly disturbed by the way the scene emphasized friendship.</p><div type="image" title="Supercorp fan art" height="1107" width="1606" msid="88189116" hostid="261"></div><p>"Maybe the writers think acting super gay is canceled out by using words like that," Zari said in her email about the finale.</p><p>The way the scene was shot made Zari believe Lena and Kara were going to kiss, so she was disappointed that the two hugged instead. And the <keyword id="12153702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fandom" source="Orion">fandom</keyword>'s disappointment, as a whole, was loud on social media.</p><p>The phrases "<a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a43186/supergirl-sanvers-lgbtq-fandom/">SUPERGIRL IS GAY"</a> and "<a href="https://www.justjaredjr.com/2021/11/11/kara-lena-kiss-in-alleged-cut-supergirl-finale-scene/">SUPERCORP KISSED"</a> trended on Twitter after the series finale aired, with the latter referring to an alleged set photo being circulated on social media that appeared to show an alternate version of Lena and Kara's conversation, in which the two kissed.</p><p>(The CW has not addressed whether the photo is real or fabricated, and representatives for the network didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.)</p><p>Megan told Insider in a statement after the finale that while the fandom felt "anger," she chose to focus on the positive influence the Supercorp fandom had had on so many.
