But somehow we managed to keep our heads above the water."People of faith around the world have found different ways to cope.The move online has been steady. An app in Nigeria allows Catholics not only to attend virtual Mass, but book times for confession with priests and make donations. But worshippers in mosques and churches still need to keep a 1.5-meter distance from one another and have to wear face coverings until they reach their position.With second and third waves beginning the world over, faiths that have survived millennia are having to make some of the biggest changes in their history, just to get through 2020."Our religion, in such times as corona, tells how to behave. It is written in the Quran, if something occurs then you should stay home and not meet in the communities," Aktürk said. New Delhi, Apr 16 () Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday directed state waqf boards to ensure strict implementation of lockdown and social distancing guidelines during the holy month of Ramzan starting next week amid the coronavirus pandemic.At a meeting via video conferencing, Naqvi asked the state waqf boards' officials to create awareness among people to offer prayers and perform other religious rituals like "iftar (breaking of fast)" during Ramzan, which begins on April 24 or 25, staying inside their homes.More than seven lakh registered mosques, eidgahs, imambadas, dargahs and other religious and social institutions come under state waqf boards across the country. The Central Waqf Council is the regulatory body of state waqf boards in India."We should cooperate with health workers, security forces, administrative officers, sanitation workers. They are working for our safety and well-being even putting their own lives at risk in this coronavirus pandemic," Naqvi said."We should also demolish rumours and misinformation being spread about quarantine and isolation centres by creating awareness among people that such centres are only meant to protect people, their families and the society from the pandemic," the minister said.Naqvi told all the state waqf boards and religious and social organisations that everyone should remain cautious of any type of fake news and conspiracies aimed at creating misinformation. "Authorities have been working for safety and well-being of all citizens of the country without any discrimination. Such type of rumours and conspiracies are a nefarious design to weaken the fight against coronavirus," he said."We should work united to win this fight against corona by defeating any type of rumour, misinformation and conspiracy," the minister said.Naqvi asked officials of all the state waqf boards to play an active and effective role in ensuring that people follow the guidelines of the Union Home Ministry, state governments and the Central Waqf Council while fulfilling religious responsibilities during Ramzan.In view of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, all religious and social activities and mass gatherings in all the temples, gurdwaras, churches and other religious and social places of the country have been stopped, he said. Similarly, any mass gatherings in mosques and other Muslim religious places of the country has also been stopped, Naqvi said.He said that due to the COVID-19 threat, religious leaders as well as religious and social organisations from all regions of the country, have appealed to people to offer prayers and perform all other religious rituals staying inside their homes during Ramzan. Most of the Muslim nations of the world have also banned mass gatherings at mosques and other religious places during the holy month, he pointed out.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in cooperation with all the state governments, has been working effectively for the safety and well-being of the people, he said.The cooperation of the people has brought great relief to India in the war against COVID-19 Naqvi said, adding that several challenges are still there before the country. Keeping in view the strong second wave of the coronavirus, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to shut all educational institutions till April 18. He has also said that retail commercial establishments will be open only till 7 p.m. for the rest of this month. While interacting with reporters in Patna, the chief minister said that the second wave of coronavirus is stronger and is spreading quickly in rural and urban areas. "We have imposed a partial lockdown and night curfew to stop transmission of corona in the state. We have been witnessing that the virus is infecting school children more this time. Hence, all educational institutes including schools, colleges and coaching centres will be shut till April 18. We will take a further decision about their opening after the assessment of the situation," Kumar said. Earlier, the educational institutions were shut till April 11 and the state government has now extended this by a week. "Apart from educational institutes, special guidelines have been issued for retail entities including that they have to operate till 7 p.m. every day for the rest of this month. Each shop has to follow the <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> guidelines including wearing masks and using sanitizers. They can allow only 25% customers against their actual capacity," Kumar said. "We have also closed all private and government events apart from spiritual places like temples, mosques, churches, and Gurudwaras," he said. "We have also directed all private and government offices to operate with one-third (33%) manpower of their overall capacity," he said. "We have allowed only 50 persons to assemble for the cremation or burial of the deceased. For marriage events, the authorities will penalize organizers if more than 200 persons assemble at the venue," Kumar added. "We have also directed authorities to ensure only 50% passengers in public transport and 50% in cinema halls and transporters or cinema hall owners have to follow all guidelines of <keyword id="8764728" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid 19</keyword>," Kumar said. "Earlier on Thursday, we had organized an all party meeting to discuss the situation due to coronavirus in the state and informed Governor Phagu Chauhan," he added.

"The virus doesn't stand a chance to get transmitted around here."In New York City, cases have plateaued, but deaths continue to climb.<h2>Subways and schools could have fueled the spread</h2>Any gathering creates an opportunity for viruses to spread, but there's some debate over what specifically fueled New York City's outbreak.MIT economist Jeffrey Harris <a href="http://web.mit.edu/jeffrey/harris/HarrisJE_WP2_COVID19_NYC_13-Apr-2020.pdf">argued in a recent paper</a> that the city's subway system was primarily to blame.Before the pandemic hit, more than 5 million people in New York City took the subway each day. Harris's paper, which has not been peer-reviewed, found that the coronavirus had a slower rate of transmission in Manhattan compared to other boroughs at the end of March. That was around the same time that Manhattan's subway ridership decreased by more than 90% — the sharpest drop of any borough.NYU mathematician Alon Levy <a href="https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2020/04/17/that-mit-study-about-the-subway-causing-covid-spread-is-crap/">poked holes in Harris' conclusion</a>, however, by identifying high rates of transmission in neighborhoods with relatively low transit ridership like Eastern Queens and Staten Island. Another <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.11.20056010v1">study of households in Guangzhou</a>, which is still awaiting peer review, estimated an even higher rate: at least 19%.The researchers added that the chances of transmission could rise if there are more elderly people in a household. The study also determined that the new coronavirus is more transmissible within households than SARS or MERS.In New York City, the borough with the most coronavirus infections — Queens — has the <a href="https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/nycdata/population-geography/avg_size_hhold.htm">highest number of people in an average household</a>: at least three.
