"And so I could not have asked for a better song to kind of motivate me and pump me up." The show features a group of successful Asians and Asian Americans living in Los Angeles, including DJ <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kimlee/?utm_source=ig_embed">Kim Lee</a>, film producer Kelly Mi Li, influencer Kevin Krieder, and fashion influencer<a href="https://www.instagram.com/jaimexie/?hl=en"> Jaime Xie</a>, among others. But beyond the bling, the show tackles real issues, from abortion to grief and betrayal. And talking to Chiu, a Taiwanese philanthropist, haute couture collector and co-founder Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery with her husband Dr. Gabriel Chiu, is not always what you expect.Chiu was largely portrayed as the <a href="https://www.elle.com.sg/2021/02/05/what-you-see-is-not-what-you-get-with-bling-empire-villain-christine-chiu/">onscreen villain</a>, thanks to her spats with her co-star rival Anna Shay. But Chiu is thoughtful and far more humble than what we see onscreen.While the show's draw is obvious - money, glitz, power - for Chiu, it's more than just a flashy vehicle for fame. It's also an opportunity to break stereotypes about the Asian community and amplify of Asian voices.In fact, Chiu told Insider that, "spoiler alert," fans should expect to see "a new face or two, [who] are huge advocates of the AAPI community" next season.Amid Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Insider spoke to Chiu about anti-Asian violence, season two spoilers of "Bling Empire," and what she's learned during lockdown.This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.<h3>Insider: How is shooting season two of "Bling Empire"?</h3>Christine Chiu: For season one, we filmed eight episodes in two years, for season two, we're shooting eight episodes in eight weeks. It has been a full-time, overtime endeavor.<h3>As a producer on the show, what has the process of shooting been like?</h3>Incredibly enlightening. The most gratifying component is having a global platform to raise awareness of AAPI contributions. It's important to carve out more spaces for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-bling-empire-star-jaime-xie-talks-fashion-influencer-fortune-2021-1">Asian voices</a>.<div type="image" title="christine chiu anna shay" height="1758" width="2500" msid="83063032" hostid="261"></div>"Bling Empire" has over-the-top fluff and bling, but it's balanced out with heartwarming, authentic and deep stories that have a great Asian perspective. They're issues that are universally relatable.Some of the topics from season one [are] adoption, infertility, identity, marriage, betrayal and mental health. It could have been dark, but they were weaved in beautifully with lighter moments. I am humbled to have been a part of it.<h3>Why is cultural diversity so important for you to show on "Bling Empire?"</h3>It's grossly underrepresented. AAPI faces, voices and stories are disproportionately underrepresented in both big and small screens in the media, altogether. But I wouldn't fault the <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> industry.As a population, we're less self-promotional. We're quieter and more reserved. My parents taught me growing up to stay silent on your accolades and never talk about your problems.<h3>What does <keyword id="1657041" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="AAPI-Heritage-Month">AAPI Heritage Month</keyword> mean to you?</h3>I am grateful for it. Altogether, we're better people when we're more aware. We need to appreciate and celebrate the contributions that make up the fabric of America who are coming from different origins and cultures.AAPI month gives us a chance to slow down, reflect, and grow. I'm grateful for AAPI Heritage Month, for it highlights the contributions of leaders [in] the AAPI community; looking back on how we got here.<div type="image" title="Christine Chiu" height="640" width="854" msid="83063037" hostid="261"></div>It was always culturally ingrained in me, at least, that when people treat you poorly because of your skin color or where you come from, your vengeance to that, or how you deal with that, is just to persist - to be resilient, keep quiet, and work harder, to become more successful financially, in life, and career-wise. That's how you show them.It really took this time, these past few months, to wake me up to say: "No, that's not enough." Just taking it and letting racism, those micro-aggressions, roll off my shoulders, is not enough. We let it grow by not speaking up.<h3>Do you worry about the world your 2-year-old son, Baby G, is growing up in?</h3>As a new mom, I want to break this cycle for my son and his generation and the generations after that. I'm proud of the AAPI community for speaking up and saying: "This is not OK."We are an essential part of this country and contributed significantly. The violence is not OK. The lack of recognition and the discrimination is also not OK. It's an important time and I'm grateful for it.<div type="image" title="Christine Chiu" height="2727" width="3637" msid="83063040" hostid="261"></div><h3>Have you become friends with the cast of "House of Ho"? It's another Asian-focused reality TV show that came out at roughly the same time. It felt uncanny. </h3>I'm so glad we connected. "House of Ho" cast member, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/washingtonho/">Washington Ho</a>, reached out to me through social media. Cast members from both shows have become acquainted. The general feeling is support and encouragement because we just need more AAPI faces, voices, and perspectives out there. They're similar in that the shows both lead with over-the-top lifestyles, then digs into familial issues, but they are a Vietnamese family and reveal different idiosyncrasies than our show.<h3>What are you most proud of about "Bling Empire"?</h3>A lot of times when people think of "Asians," they think it's a monolithic community, but no. There are many types of Asians coming from different countries.In our cast, I don't think we couldn't have asked for a more diverse all-Asian ensemble of Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Singaporean - and we're all based in LA. That's another reminder of the cultural diversity we have and should be celebrating.<h3>What's it like shooting during the pandemic?</h3>Netflix is so strict adhering to their Covid-19 guidelines in relation to production and filming. We had a little situation yesterday; it was a grey zone situation [where we thought someone working on set may have had COVID-19]. The delay was seven hours, just to make sure everything was safe. Shooting during the pandemic, we're very lucky...it keeps hundreds of people employed.<div type="image" title="Bling Empire Netflix TV show " height="1080" width="1920" msid="83063043" hostid="261"></div><h3>What was the biggest lesson you learned from the pandemic?</h3>The biggest lesson is family: family first, family everything. Without family and health, none of it matters. Cars and clothes don't matter. Nothing. During the pandemic, you decide who your real friends are. One day, we'll look back and remember how we all got through this.My mother passed away last year, not due to COVID-19. But in January, she found out she had breast cancer. I was so stressed during lockdown, my mom didn't tell me that she had breast cancer.Last July, I got a call from a Taiwanese hospital's Intensive Care Unit, they told me my mom had a few days to live. I immediately flew to Taiwan and was in a quarantine hotel for 15 days, then a soft quarantine for seven days and my mom held out for me. I got to spend three days with her in the hospital before she passed away.[During] the pandemic, so many people have lost family and friends. It's a time of reevaluating what's most important. My mom's passing, it made me think what kind of mom I would want to be in my life, and what lessons I'd want to pass onto my son. How can I honor our heritage and culture?<h3>You were previously offered a role on "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." Would you do it now?</h3>I can't speak on behalf of the producers of the "Real Housewives" franchise, but I don't think I would have had the same opportunity to tell a story in the same way as "Bling Empire."That was one of my biggest objectives: participating in the art of storytelling. That franchise doesn't have that opportunity for the cast. Aside from entertaining homes in America, I needed to do something that was far greater for generations to come.<div type="image" title="Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" height="1333" width="2000" msid="83063046" hostid="261"></div><h3>What can you tell us about your untitled forthcoming children's book series and how will it teach lessons of inclusivity and acceptance?</h3>The books will explore cultural diversity and the Asian American identity, in a fun way through the adventures of Baby G and friends, celebrating the uniqueness of different cultures. It follows Baby G and who he is, through his heritage and cultural background, owning his heritage and using it to troubleshoot in his day-to-day life.<h3>Why is telling stories from an Asian perspective so crucial?</h3>Participating in "Bling Empire" gave me the opportunity to make a positive shift for Asian representation and my son Baby G's generation to come. With "Bling Empire," I wanted the greater opportunity to do good. My mother would constantly remind me growing up: "To whom much is given, much is expected."I've always had this instinct in my heart to do more with the time I have. Sometimes it comes out in my philanthropic contributions, but sometimes it's not as exciting as "Bling Empire" on Netflix. The long-running dance competition show celebrated "Britney Night" on Monday, with contestants showcasing their ballroom dance moves to hit Spears songs like "Oops! … I Did It Again," "Womanizer," and "Hold It Against Me." Ahead of the second episode on September 27, Burke <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-dancing-with-the-stars-cheryl-burke-covid-cody-rigsby-2021-9">announced that she had tested positive for COVID-19</a> in an emotional Instagram video. Four days later, Rigsby announced <a href="https://www.insider.com/peloton-star-cody-rigsby-tests-positive-for-covid-again-milder-2021-10">that he had tested positive as well</a>. It was a piece of haute couture, of course. Each one of those is unique, one-of-a-kind, and therefore can only be sold once. It's also usually quite expensive. Chiu had to get her hands on it."I discovered later that [my friend] had changed her appointment time with the fashion house ahead of mine so that she could purchase it first," Chiu told Insider. "I learned quickly that all is fair in love and couture."Not every company can say it makes haute couture. In France, it's regulated by the Ministry of Industry, which chooses which brands are true emblems of the craft. "I was immediately transported to an era of ultimate luxury and refinement," she said, "and fell in love with these museum-worthy pieces of wearable art."During the pandemic, Chiu said her methods for shopping haven't changed, but her perception of what it means to responsibly consume luxury has. She said she found herself with a great incentive to spend money on brands that took a moral stance. The show chronicles the lives of successful Asians and Asian Americans, from various cultural and professional backgrounds, living in Los Angeles. "It was an incredible experience full of laughter and tears for me," Lee told Insider about her experience working on the show, adding that Chiu "definitely knows how to throw the best parties."Knowing how to throw a good party is a staple skill on the jet-set circuit. In fact, Chiu said one of the main reasons she buys haute couture is for events - weddings, red carpets, film festivals. That's all changed with the pandemic, however. But let's pretend, just for a moment, that it's the year 2019. This would see Chiu in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Those are just the big named fashion cities, not including the trips that come in between. Each city has its own fashion houses, and each house - whether it's Chanel, Givenchy, Armani, or Christian Dior - has its respective traditions, and desired protocols.<div type="image" title="Christine Chiu" height="3000" width="2000" msid="80315497" hostid="261"></div>Generally, Chiu said, the experience of buying haute couture starts like this: each house gives a presentation, commonly known as a fashion show. From there, the game begins.Clients of haute couture have to be invited, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-rules-of-haute-couture-shopping-1453318223">as reported by The Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley,</a> and they are usually introduced by someone who knows someone super well-connected to an haute couture house.During fashion weeks, these invite-only individuals are allowed to book private appointments to get a second look at what was shown at the presentations. "Some houses would hire a model [to] 're-model' the client's selected pieces," Chiu said. "While in other circumstances, the designer walk meets with clients to discuss [their] inspiration and make personal recommendations." Once the potential buyer selects their favorite look, they can suggest further customizations to the outfit.After a deposit is put down, the person waits six to 12 months for the piece to be produced.During this time, there are at least two to three fittings to make sure the look is all coming together as desired, Chiu said. For one, it's a faux pas to ask about price - or discounts, for that matter. And sometimes fashion houses will only sell one look per country. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Survivors of <keyword id="46530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="sexual-assault">sexual assault</keyword> face many barriers that make reporting abuse or speaking publicly about it much more difficult than keeping quiet.</li><li>The psychological response to trauma is to bury painful memories, but retrieving them is required if a victim turns to the legal system.</li><li>Allegations of sexual assault may be met with hostility from family, friends, and the public.</li><li>When the perpetrator holds a position of power, the cards are stacked even higher against the victim.</li><li>Speaking up doesn't guarantee justice for victims — and often, an expert said, it "makes your life so much worse."</li></ul>Less than a month after a top Navy officer raped her, Kimberly filed a police report. For six months, nothing moved forward, despite her twice-monthly calls to the department, she said. Her case was moved to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Judge Advocate General's Corps, but the first special agent who took the case never interviewed her or the officer, and the JAG prosecutor didn't listen to a recording in which she and man argued about the incident, she said. She provided time-stamped pictures of her black eye and bloody lip from the day of the alleged assault too. Insider has seen the police report, listened to the recording, viewed the photos, and asked the officer and the prosecutor for comment; neither responded. That was two years ago, and Kimberly, who asked to keep her last name concealed to protect her safety, is still waiting for justice - or even just to be listened to. She stopped working for a period, temporarily became homeless because she was too distressed to do her job, and lost friends who sided with the sailor.She's heard the man's career has advanced. "It's been a nightmare, and I don't wish it on anyone," she said.Kimberly waited only a few weeks to file her report; she said the delay was because she was "very scared and in denial." Many sexual-assault victims wait years - if they don't stay silent forever - and Kimberly's story illustrates why. Societal scripts teach girls to please others, imbalanced power dynamics pressure victims to keep quiet, and psychological forces cloud memories in favor of survival. With a legal system that protects the accused, it's a wonder any come forward at all. Those like Kimberly who do speak up can be bullied, go broke, and lose friends and community trust. "We want to get this out there. It's important," <a href="https://www.drlauramcguire.com/">Laura McGuire</a>, a sexual-health educator in Florida, told Insider. "But then it makes your life so much worse."<h2>The body and brain protect you from remembering, and retrieving the memories can be retraumatizing </h2>Christine Blasey Ford, the professor who in 2018 accused the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her in the early 1980s, is a very public example of someone who<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/10/03/christine-blasey-ford-changing-memories-not-credible-kavanaugh-column/1497661002/"> was criticized</a> over the inconsistencies in her account, including exactly when and where the alleged attack occurred and how many people witnessed it.But when you experience a traumatic event like sexual assault, your body releases stress hormones that prepare you to fight or flee, muting the parts of your brain responsible for the kind of rational decision-making that you normally have access to. "Being able to have the foresight and the stamina and the outward expression of rage at what just happened is frequently cut off by that adrenaline response and by the powerlessness and by the mind's inability to grasp 'wait, what just happened?'" Janice Stevenson, a licensed psychologist, told Insider. "And nowhere in there is 'I need to get the police. I need to get some help.'"In the days and weeks afterward, victims aren't necessarily in a better cognitive spot to report an assault, since their brains tuck it away in order to function. Some<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/070674370304800106"> research</a> suggests a fuzzy memory helps protect victims from post-traumatic stress disorder. "It does anything it can to kind of compartmentalize or minimize or erase what happened, because from this survival perspective that's going to be the easiest way to move forward," McGuire said, "to get up and brush your teeth and eat breakfast instead of being paralyzed by that trauma and by those memories."That can make it easier to justify the attack - the victim could think, for example, that "it wasn't that bad, it could have been worse," or that "they didn't mean it," McGuire added. <div type="image" title="alzheimers brain puzzle" height="2772" width="4158" msid="79646780" hostid="261"></div>And while it may be possible to retrieve those memories accurately, some<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nn.4084"> research</a> suggests a person might have to return to the state of mind in which the memories were formed to do so. That's a lot to ask a survivor of assault. All the while, the legal system - and often the court of public opinion - requires evidence backed by clear, consistent memories. "On top of it, you're put in another traumatic situation where the burden of proof is on the victim," McGuire said. <h2>By speaking out, survivors risk alienation from their loved ones</h2>When a survivor of sexual assault speaks out against a public figure, they have no choice but to enter the public sphere themselves, Keeli Sorensen, the vice president of victim services at the Rape, Abuse &amp; Incest National Network, told Insider.While the support of loved ones can help a survivor through the ordeal of going public, family and friends often can contribute to feelings of alienation."I think there is kind of a perception that if somebody comes forward with something so serious, people would rally behind them," McGuire said. "But usually the opposite is true."The whole topic is uncomfortable. Perhaps more uncomfortable than believing that someone you know was assaulted is believing that someone you know committed an assault. "People know the person who's being accused as someone who they love having lunch with, who makes them laugh, who brought them flowers on their birthday," McGuire said. "Like, how could they possibly be both things?" For Kimberly, who was friends with the man she accused of rape for 10 years, speaking out meant losing some mutual friends - mostly women, she said - who sided with him. She said she thinks the reasons range from his high status in the military to his good looks to a belief that she was taking things "too far.""I said no, and I told him to stop, like, five times," Kimberly said. "How is that taking things too far?" <h2>Accusing someone in power risks money, reputation, and community</h2>The scales are stacked even more against the victim when the assault is perpetrated by a community leader. By speaking out against someone who has been entrusted with power, the survivor is asking their community to consider some tough questions that they might rather ignore or reject.Blasey Ford and her family received threats - including death threats - that eventually forced them to move. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh's nomination sailed through. If the perpetrator is a political figure, the survivor may face backlash that stems from deference for the office rather than the person who holds it."Their very office demands of them a certain level of fairness and concern for justice," Sorensen said. "It feels very risky for survivors to call that into question and to invite a lot of potential critique and attention."Finances are stacked in powerful people's favor too, McGuire said. Criminal-defense lawyers can cost up to $700 an hour,<a href="https://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/how-much-will-a-criminal-defense-lawyer-cost.html#:~:text=Typically%252C%2520you%2520can%2520expect%2520to,payment%2520of%2520a%2520retainer%2520fee."> according to LegalMatch</a>, and retainer fees can push the overall price even higher. "When people are in positions of power, then they have more money. And so they can say, 'Bring it on. I can fight you,'" McGuire said. The encounter ended in assault, which she described in the Lifetime documentary<a href="https://www.mylifetime.com/shows/surviving-jeffrey-epstein"> "Surviving Jeffrey Epstein</a>.""I didn't know what his net worth was, but you could tell by where he lived and where the assault occurred that this man had incredible resources," Kiki told Insider. "The photos that were in his home were of him with all these dignitaries and presidents and super powerful people that I recognized even at the age of 19."Kiki said that after hearing another woman come out with allegations about Epstein 15 years later, she felt a responsibility to help other victims that outweighed her shame and fear of retaliation. She decided to share her story with an attorney, joining the<a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-jeffery-epstein-sexual-abuse-cases-2019-7"> dozens of women</a> who took legal action against Epstein.<h2>Girls are taught at an early age that they should aim to please and that provoking men is their fault</h2>The problem starts as early as childhood, Stevenson said. She pointed to the message that "boys will boys" as giving boys and men permission to do as they please without considering how their actions affect girls and women. <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/riskprotectivefactors.html">Research has found that believing in and adhering to conventional gender stereotypes</a>, like the stereotype of men as strong and unemotional and women as gentle and caring, is linked to a higher likelihood of becoming a perpetrator of sexual assault. Women, on the other hand, are socialized to feel inferior and objectified, Kiki said. As a child model, she got used to taking directions from adults and aiming to please, all while walking through the world feeling lesser than men, she said."Subconsciously, you start to have these ideas of value," she said. "Obviously, in the modeling industry, it's primarily your looks. In a way, I think your mind starts to trick you into thinking that you're sort of an object to please."Nina Endrst, who said she's survived multiple sexual assaults throughout her life, told Insider she learned early on that victims are blamed, not believed. She has since founded <a href="https://www.thesoulunity.com/">The SoulUnity</a>, a membership organization geared toward helping people heal through meditation and other holistic techniques.Endrst said that when she was 9, she told her mom that her babysitter's son, a teenager, had touched her inappropriately, and her mom confronted the family. They called Endrst a liar, Endrst said. "That's the narrative," Endrst said. "The first thing is 'she's lying,' not 'oh my God.'" When she was older, Endrst said, a man chased her down the street, in broad daylight, threatening to rape and kill her. Endrst said that when she told a male authority figure, he asked, "Did you provoke him?""Women are put in a position, which we've seen time and time again, where it's like, 'What were you wearing? Were you drinking?'" Endrst said. "Yeah, I existed."<h2>Some victims choose not to speak up</h2>In addition to all the structural and societal pressures keeping sexual-assault victims quiet, many have personal reasons that they don't speak up. Those should be honored as well, McGuire said. Speaking up "is incredibly hard, and this is incredibly traumatic, and they will probably be revictimized," they said, adding that no one should feel pressured to add their voice to the #MeToo chorus and that people should seek support from a therapist to help them think through their options. "You can't exactly fix it, but you can make it more manageable," McGuire said, adding that it's not right or wrong to report or not report. "It's a very personal decision." <div type="image" title="harvey weinstein" height="1333" width="2000" msid="79646784" hostid="261"></div>It took 20 years for Rowena Chiu, one of the many women who came forward during the <keyword id="176675" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Harvey-Weinstein">Harvey Weinstein</keyword> scandal, to speak about her assault - first anonymously, then publicly. Other victims should keep in mind that doing so means there will always be "a section of the community that doesn't believe you," Chiu told Sara Nasserzadeh, a social psychologist who hosts the "Little Black Fish" podcast."It may be a large section of the community, like in the case of Christine Blasey Ford. It may be just the occasional person, as in the case of the Weinstein victims," Chiu said. "But you will find that disbelief, because that's unfortunately where our society is today."But Kimberly, for one, is swallowing that reality. She doesn't need everyone to believe her, but she needs to be heard. That's why, she said, after the police department and military offices didn't, she turned to the media. Now, her case is being moved to Washington, DC, since the Naval Criminal Investigative Service was aware she had talked to reporters. Last week San Francisco resident Jeffrey Katz received a 72-hour eviction notice that stated, "You are illegally using the premises as a tourist or transient unit," charging him with violating the city's ordinances. 
Katz reportedly contacted Airbnb, but said the company "didn't seem quite interested," <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/S-F-cracks-down-on-Airbnb-rentals-5381237.php#photo-6130507" target="_blank">SF Gate reports</a>.
<a href="http://archive.org/stream/gov.ca.sf.admin.03/ca_sf_administrative_03_djvu.txt" target="_blank">San Francisco bans short-term rentals</a>, which means that anyone who rents out their space on services like Airbnb and VRBO can face fines by the City Planning Department, and eviction on the grounds of illegally operating hotels. 
"Using an apartment for short-term rentals is a crime in San Francisco," Edward Singer, the attorney who filed the notice against Katz, told SF Gate. "It's obviously not the same moral culpability as running a house of prostitution or manufacturing methamphetamines, but any illegal use is grounds for eviction."
For what it's worth, the <a href="http://archive.org/stream/gov.ca.sf.admin.03/ca_sf_administrative_03_djvu.txt" target="_parent">law is pretty clear</a> (see section 41A.4). In short, San Francisco bans all residential rentals that are shorter than 30 days, unless the host has a permit. Airbnb also warns hosts to check in with their local laws and leases. 
Last month, Lisa Weitekamp and Chad Selph also received a 72-hour eviction notice for renting out one of their guest rooms to two Airbnb guests for a total of three nights in October 2013.
For hosts in San Francisco, it's probably best to try to be as discreet as possible with guests. Though, it seems that the law may eventually change down the road. If San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu has his way, a new law would amend the codes that ban short-term rentals. 
"If you live next door or nearby, and all of a sudden a place is turned into a hotel with people coming in and out, generally that is not welcomed by most residents," Christine Haw, SF Planning Department code enforcement manager, told SF Gate.
But it's not just San Francisco hosts who are at risk.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-illegal-in-new-york-city-2013-5" target="_blank">In New York</a>, there's a law that makes it illegal for people to rent out their homes or apartments for less than 29 days. The law is actionable only as a secondary offense, however. For example, if the police show up after a noise complaint and then find that you're renting out your space, that's when you get in trouble.
All eyes are on Airbnb, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-raising-at-10-billion-valuation-2014-3" target="_blank">as it's reportedly raising somewhere between $400 million and $500 million at a $10 billion valuation</a>. That would make Airbnb more valuable than large hotel operators like Wyndham Worldwide Corp, which is valued at $9.4 billion. It would also be more valuable than Hyatt Hotels Corp., which is valued at $8.4 billion.

Some Airbnb Hosts In San Francisco Are At Risk Of Eviction

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Associated Press/Elaine ThompsonA Drug Enforcement Administration agent hands a freshly pulled marijuana plant to another law-enforcement officer near Entiant, Washington, September 20, 2005.</div></div></div>In April, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said it would <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dea-marijuana-reschedule_us_5704567de4b0537661881644" target="_blank">review</a> marijuana's classification as a Schedule I drug, considered the "most dangerous class" of substances.While the DEA's announcement is a positive sign, many drug policy experts think it's unlikely the agency will actually decide to change marijuana's classification, despite a dramatic shift in public sentiment about the drug.Marijuana's position in the top tier of the <a href="http://www.dea.gov/druginfo/ds.shtml" target="_blank">scheduling system</a> - which organizes drugs by their "acceptable medical use and ... abuse or dependency potential" - has endured since the 1970s."DEA will carry out its assessment of the FDA recommendation in accordance with the [Controlled Substances Act] … and hopes to release its determination in the first half of 2016," the DEA said in a letter to a group of Democratic senators, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dea-marijuana-reschedule_us_5704567de4b0537661881644">first obtained</a> by the Huffington Post.The DEA's statement was in <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dea-marijuana-reschedule_us_5704567de4b0537661881644" target="_blank">response to a letter</a> from Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic senators calling for the federal government to facilitate medical-marijuana research, which the Schedule I classification <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/04/06/the-dea-will-decide-whether-to-change-course-on-marijuana-by-july/" target="_blank">severely hinders</a>.Rescheduling marijuana into a different classification wouldn't undo the prohibition on the drug, but would likely result in increased access to the drug for scientific purposes. In late 2015, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/10/21/gallup-nearly-60-percent-of-americans-want-legal-marijuana/?tid=a_inl" target="_blank">58% of Americans</a> said marijuana use should be legal. As recently as the mid-1990s, only about 25% of Americans held the same position.And since California began allowing medical marijuana in 1996, 22 other states and Washington, DC have followed suit, <a href="https://news.vice.com/article/dea-reschedule-medical-marijuana-schedule-1-controlled-substances" target="_blank">permiting</a> the medical use of the drug in some form. Organizations like the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics have <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/04/06/the-dea-will-decide-whether-to-change-course-on-marijuana-by-july/" target="_blank">recognized</a> marijuana's therapeutic uses and called on the DEA to reschedule it. Even members of the federal government have joined the push recently."I certainly think it ought to be rescheduled," former US Attorney General Eric Holder <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/eric-holder-if-sentencing-reform-dies-id-be-ashamed/" target="_blank">said</a> in a February 2016 interview. "You know, we treat marijuana in the same way we treat heroin now, and that clearly is not appropriate."That groundswell of support, however, does not appear to be the impetus for the DEA's review. The agency is acting on an administrative requirement, according to <a href="http://www.brookings.edu/experts/hudakj">John Hudak</a>, the deputy director of the Center for Effective Public Management at the Brookings Institution."The advocacy community has suggested that DEA's statement that they would decide on the Gregoire-Chaffee rescheduling petition this summer is a sign that they are moving toward reforming policy with regard to marijuana," Hudak told Business Insider, referring to a <a href="http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/chaffee.pdf" target="_blank">2011 petition</a> from Govs. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Christine Gregoire of Washington state."The reality is that DEA's statement offers no such signal," Hudak said.
