<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="3407044" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="christina-grimmie">Christina Grimmie</keyword> gained viral fame after posting videos of her singing to <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>.</li><li>She appeared on the sixth season of "<keyword id="823080" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-voice">The Voice</keyword>," joining Adam Levine's team. </li><li>Thursday marks 5 years since she was murdered by a fan after one of her concerts.</li></ul><p>On June 10, 2016, YouTuber and <keyword id="250" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Singer">singer</keyword> Christina Grimmie performed at an intimate concert venue called the Plaza Live Theater in Orlando, Florida.</p><p>After the show, the 22-year-old stuck around to meet her fans, as was common for the up-and-coming artist. </p><p>"She just genuinely loved the people around her and gave everyone the time of day, no matter what," Christina's brother Marcus Grimmie, who is now 28, told Insider in a recent interview. </p><p>According to the Orlando Police Department incident report from that night, over 100 people were in the theater where the meet-and-greet took place. Christina signed autographs and chatted with fans while her brother sat nearby at the merchandise table.</p><p>Among the fans waiting in line to meet Christina stood Kevin James Loibl, a 27-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida. </p><p>When Loibl approached the singer, he took out a handgun and shot her several times, according to the police report reviewed by Insider. </p><p>After Loibl shot his gun, Marcus jumped over the merchandise table and tackled the shooter to the ground, the police report said. But Loibl managed to get out of Marcus' hold, put the gun to his head, and shot himself.</p><p>Loibl died instantly, and Christina was pronounced dead hours later at the hospital. Two nights later, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/06/12/us/what-happened-at-the-orlando-nightclub-shooting.html">49 people were killed in the Pulse nightclub shooting</a>, four miles from the site of Christina's <keyword id="13542" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Murder">murder</keyword>. </p><p>Thursday marks five years since Christina was killed, abruptly ending her rise to mainstream music fame that was just beginning to gain momentum in 2016.  </p><p>Many people have <a href="https://youtu.be/0Ww8qqzNbnQ">compared Christina's killing to the murders</a> of music star Selena Quintanilla and actress Rebecca Schaeffer, both of whom were killed by their fans. </p><h2>The killer was obsessed with Christina, police said </h2><div type="image" title="Christina Grimmie" height="1499" width="3000" msid="83418601" hostid="261"></div><p>A friend of Christina's killer, Cory Dennington, told police that he believed Loibl was obsessed with Christina, according to the report. Dennington told police that Loibl "watched everything having to do with" the late singer.</p><p>The obsession became apparent about "six months to a year" before the killing, but it started to become "unhealthy" two months before she was slain, Dennington told police. </p><p>"Dennington believed he spent most of his waking hours watching Christina on YouTube as well as constantly monitoring her social media accounts," the report reads.</p><p>Loibl began changing his appearance for her, the Orlando Police Department wrote in the report. Although he had never attended one of Christina's shows nor met her before the night of the murder, the police report said, he got hair implants, had his teeth whitened, and underwent Lasik eye surgery.</p><p>The report also said that Loibl's co-workers at Best Buy were aware of his infatuation with Christina and would "good-naturedly tease him." </p><p>The police report cited <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2016/06/16/christina-grimmie-murderer-obsessed-fan/)">an article written by TMZ</a>, which said that Loibl was enraged after his Best Buy co-workers showed him a picture of Christina with her producer-boyfriend Stephen Rezza. </p><p>When Loibl attended Christina's concert in 2016, he carried in two handguns along with a hunting knife and two loaded magazines, Orlando Police Chief John Mina <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/voice-singer-christina-grimmie-shot-after-florida-concert-n590161">told reporters</a> the day after her death. Mina also said Loibl traveled to Orlando from St. Petersburg, which is over 100 miles away, and that he had plans to go back home, NBC News reported at the time.</p><p><a href="https://www.cnn.com/2016/06/22/us/christina-grimmie-the-voice-orlando-police-end-investigation/index.html">According to CNN</a>, police said Loibl purchased the guns legally before the show. </p><p>Six months after her death, the Grimmie family <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2016/12/21/entertainment/christina-grimmie-lawsuit-family-wrongful-death/index.html">filed</a> a wrongful death lawsuit against the concert venue, arguing that security officials only performed "superficial bag checks" and didn't have body pat-downs or metal detectors that could have stopped attendees from bringing weapons into the venue, Billboard <a href="https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7632332/christina-grimmie-family-lawsuit-aeg-live-orlando-venue">reported</a>.</p><p>The suit was resolved in 2019, according to a representative from the Christina Grimmie Foundation, an organization founded in the singer's honor to support families of gun-violence victims. The representative did not disclose what kind of settlement was reached. </p><h2><strong>Grimmie's YouTube song covers catapulted her to stardom</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Christina Grimmie" height="1439" width="2880" msid="83418606" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>At the beginning of Christina's YouTube career, her videos were straightforward: She'd sit behind an electric piano against a beige wall with a retro Sonic poster in the background. She posted her first cover in July 2009, singing "Don't Wanna Be Torn" by Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus). </p><p>She soon gained a large following across social media with roughly three million subscribers on YouTube when she was killed, according to news reports published at the time.</p><p>Marcus, Christina's brother, told Insider that his sister's friends had encouraged her to post singing videos. </p><p>"She had a gift [for singing] from a young age," Marcus said. "When she put work into something, she was a monster. She could do just about anything."</p><p>She posted more videos and took fan recommendations, eventually singing more challenging songs like "<a href="https://youtu.be/ZJ_40QzufYU">My Heart Will Go On</a>" by Celine Dion and "<a href="https://youtu.be/TmMT7H6HeYE">Skyscraper</a>" by Demi Lovato. </p><p>One of her most notable covers was a collaboration with singers Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider, singing a stripped-down, piano-heavy version of Nelly's "<a href="https://youtu.be/a2RA0vsZXf8">Just a Dream</a>" in 2010. The cover has since amassed over 220 million combined views on both Christina's and Schneider's channels.</p><p>"Getting to create the 'Just a Dream' video with Christina, which has now reached hundreds of millions of people, will forever be one of the pieces of art I'm proudest of," Tsui told Insider in an email. "Getting to share that musical moment with the world, and letting that (in addition to her whole body of work) live on and go on inspiring people, is absolutely priceless."</p><p>Schneider told Insider that he wished the group had more opportunities to recreate that magic again.</p><p>"Working with Christina always felt so easy, and the time passed so quickly," he said. "She was just a joy to be around."</p><h2><strong>She found fame offline during season 6 of 'The Voice'</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Christina Grimmie on &quot;The Voice&quot;" height="1500" width="3000" msid="83418612" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Christina appeared on the sixth season of NBC's singing competition series "The Voice" in 2014 and wowed the judges with a performance of Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball."</p><p>She got the attention of all four judges and chose to join Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine's team. The contestants work with the judges to hone their singing abilities to move forward in the competition, meaning she and Levine worked together closely.</p><p>She placed third in the competition, which was ultimately won by Josh Kaufman. During her time on the show, she performed covers of Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley.</p><p>Levine offered to help pay for Christina's funeral services, <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/adam-levine-offered-to-pay-for-christina-grimmies-funeral-93028/">Rolling Stone reported</a> at the time. </p><p>"I found out this morning that Adam Levine personally called my mother and said he would pay for her funeral and her plane flight," Marcus <a href="https://www.facebook.com/marcus.grimmie/posts/1084150058345428?pnref=story">wrote on his Facebook page</a> two days after his sister's death. "And I was blown away."</p><h2><strong>The singer is remembered for her 'raw talent' that could 'awe people'</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Christina Grimmie" height="1699" width="3399" msid="83418614" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>During an interview with Insider, Mike Tompkins, a singer who had his start on YouTube, remembered her work ethic and said that she differed from other artists he worked with. </p><p>"Christina was the type of strong singer that kind of nails it instantly," he said. "She doesn't need a lot of takes. She was raw talent." </p><p>Tyler Ward, another YouTube music star, added: "She had a gift and an anointing where she could sing live, and it would awe people."</p><p>Christina's family and a community of musicians have sought to keep her memory alive.</p><p>In April 2017, the Grimmie family created the <a href="https://christinagrimmiefoundation.org/our-impact/">Christina Grimmie Foundation</a> to support families of victims of gun violence. According to the foundation's website, it has donated nearly $150,000 thus far. </p><p>The foundation hosted a benefit concert on Tuesday night in honor of the anniversary of Christina's death to raise money for the foundation's cause.</p><p>Tsui and Schneider performed a reimagining of "Just a Dream'' in honor of the cover they made together with Christina in 2010. Tori Kelly, a musician who also got her start on YouTube who was a close friend of Christina's, performed her song, "Until I Think of You."</p><p>There were performances from artists such as Rachel Platten, whom Grimmie toured with in 2016; Audra McLaughlin and Jacquie Lee; fellow "The Voice'' contestants; as well as Ward, Rezza, and YouTube singer Tiffany Alvord.</p><p>Her death not only rocked her friends, family, and fans, but the YouTube community as a whole. </p><p>Some fans created <a href="https://youtu.be/gJsx7Q7rTco">compilation videos</a> of their favorite Christina clips on YouTube while others performed tributes to honor her legacy.</p><p>Cimorelli, a group of sisters who upload videos of themselves singing covers on YouTube, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMR7bB1l0-E">shared their tribute</a> on the platform along with other fans who posted tributes.</p><p>Many artists who were touring at the time of her death, like <a href="https://youtu.be/oulEG1XQ-UY">Selena Gomez</a>, <a href="https://youtu.be/DQgT_8hTuTk">Justin Bieber</a>, and <a href="https://youtu.be/aLgH1FLAzlA">Charlie Puth</a>, performed touching tributes to Christina onstage.</p><p>Kelly posted a video of herself singing a song she wrote as a tribute to Christina called "<a href="https://youtu.be/thCTYcoo4BI">Blink of an Eye"</a> a month after her death. </p><p>Now, five years since her murder, her brother Marcus remembers how much of an impact she made - not only on YouTube and with her music, but in the lives of people she knew.</p><p>"She impacts me every day in different ways," Marcus told Insider, "and it's more about what's been taken out of the equation to realize what kind of daily impact she had."</p><p><em>This article has been updated to show that the Christina Grimmie Foundation</em><em> raised additional funds after a benefit concert.</em></p>

5 years after her shocking murder, Christina Grimmie's family and friends remember the YouTube star and singer as a 'raw talent' who could 'do just about anything'

Following her deaths, fans and fellow singers alike have gathered to pay tribute to the star.</p><p>Now, one of them is giving back in a big way.&#xa0;</p><p>Adam Levine, who was Grimmie's coach on "The Voice," was incredibly close with the singer.</p><p><div></div></p><p>He has reportedly offered to pay for her funeral expenses.&#xa0;</p><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/marcus.grimmie/posts/1084150058345428?pnref=story">In a Facebook post</a>, Grimmie's brother Marcus revealed that Adam Levine offered to pay for the funeral:</p><p><div></div></p><p>"<span>I found out this morning, that Adam Levine personally called my mother and said he will pay for the funeral and her plane flight, and I was blown away." Adam Levine will reportedly pay for 'The Voice' contestant Christina Grimmie's funeral

But two sources said that all but one staffer had left Mediakix by the end of May.</p></li></ul><p>"I had no power," a former Mediakix employee told Insider. "And on top of being paid late, ethically, I wanted to leave."</p><p>Evan Asano, who founded MediaKix in 2011, left the company in early 2021. How the influencer-marketing agency Mediakix unraveled

<p><span> <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Univision Chicago</span></p><p class="caption">Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes is dead after being shot multiple times on Chicago's southwest side on Thursday.</span></p><p><span><a href="http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Chicago-Performer-Dies-After-Being-Shot-on-His-Birthday-383534481.html" target="_blank">NBC News</a> reported that Fuentes, 45, was pronounced dead by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on Saturday afternoon.</span></p><p><span>According to police, Fuentes was shot while leaving the performance school he owned, Tras Bambalinas, to go celebrate his birthday. While in a vehicle with another person, a man with a gun approached the vehicle and ordered Fuentes to get out of the car. After Fuentes resisted the man's order, the man shot the singer in the head three times, police said.</span></p><p><span>Fuentes was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment. Mexican 'The Voice' contender dies after being shot in Chicago

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters Photographer</span></p><p class="caption">Guns that have just had their barrels crushed in Sydney are stacked after they were handed over on the last day of the Australian gun buy-back scheme, September 30.</p></div><p></p></div></div><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Early Sunday morning, a gunman carried out the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deadliest-shootings-in-us-history-orlando-nightclub-2016-6">worst mass shooting in US history</a> at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.</span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">At least 49 people were killed, and another 53 were injured. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/isis-albayan-radio-statement-on-orlando-nightclub-shooting-2016-6">ISIS has claimed responsibility</a> for what <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> enforcement has called an act of terror. But the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/james-comey-orlando-shooting-omar-mateen-fbi-2016-6">FBI painted a bizarre picture of the shooter</a>, citing links to three different terrorist organizations within a three-year span.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">"There is confusion about his motives," FBI director James Comey said.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">This massacre came just a day after a gunman targeted, shot, and killed "The Voice" singer Christina Grimmie at a concert in Orlando - and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-warned-of-a-massive-loophole-in-us-gun-laws-for-terrorists-just-12-days-before-the-orlando-shootings-2016-6">12 days after Obama warned</a> of ISIS sympathizers he can put on the "no-fly" list but can't prohibit from buying guns.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">So far, 2016 has seen 136 mass shootings, according to the <a href="http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/">Gun Violence Archive</a>, a database that tracks gun violence. And more shootings happened in 2015 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2015-mass-shootings-chart-2015-12">than days in the year</a>. Frustrated with the continued violence, many people <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/daily-news-cover-san-bernardino-shooting-2015-12">want more than "thoughts and prayers</a>."</span></p><p>In 1996, Australia took action. Twelve days after the worst mass shooting in the country's history, the government passed a law that would become one of the largest gun reforms in recent history. Afterward, gun deaths plummeted.</p><p><span>The changes remain the gold standard for advocates of gun control today.</span></p><h2>A sure and swift reaction</h2><p><span>In 1996, a man named </span><span>Martin Bryant became the worst killer in Australia's history. After walking into a cafe in Port Arthur, Tasmania, </span><span>he killed 35 people</span><span> </span><span>and wounded 23 others with a semiautomatic rifle and another semiautomatic assault weapon.</span></p><p>Bryant's actions shook Australia to its core just six weeks after then-Prime Minister John Howard took office.</p><p><span><span>As a federation, Australia gives its national government limited powers. So Howard stared down the challenge of convincing the country's various states to support nationwide reform while the national government banned the import of specific weapons.</span></span></p><p><span><span>For a while, some states seemed unwilling to pass the reform. Howard, however, made clear that his government would counter with a referendum to alter Australia's constitution and give itself the power to regulate guns.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Howard knew these efforts would be expensive, but he said he also knew they'd be worth it.</span></span></p><p><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Daniel Munoz</span></p><p class="caption">Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></p><p><span><span>As Howard wrote in a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/17/opinion/australia-banned-assault-weapons-america-can-too.html?_r=0">New York Times op-ed</a><span> 17 years after the Port Arthur shooting:</span></span></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span><span>The fundamental problem was the ready availability of high-powered weapons, which enabled people to convert their murderous impulses into mass killing. Certainly, shortcomings in treating mental illness and the harmful influence of violent video games and movies may have played a role. But nothing trumps easy access to a gun. It is easier to kill 10 people with a gun than with a knife."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Howard's reforms passed, creating the <a href="http://www.loc.gov/law/help/firearms-control/australia.php">National Firearms Agreement</a> in Australia. Aside from banning <span>certain semiautomatic and self-loading rifles and shotguns, the legislation required all firearm-license applicants to show "genuine reason" for owning a gun, which couldn't include self-defense.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Aside from the NFA, Australia still need to remove the guns then on its streets. The country instituted a mandatory, federally financed gun-buyback program.<span> The one-time national tax to raise the funds, however, required even more legislation. </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Regardless, in the end, </span><span>Australia's government would purchase </span><span>nearly 700,000 </span><span>guns. Percentagewise, that's the equivalent of 40 million in the US.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><h2>The effects</h2><p><span>After Australia's buyback and enactment of the NFA, f</span>irearm suicides and homicides dropped.</p><p>A<span>s </span><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2012/08/02/did-gun-control-work-in-australia/">The Washington Post's Wonkblog</a><span> has </span><span>pointed out, researchers from two different Australian universities found that<span> in the decade after the NFA became law, the firearm homicide rate fell by 59% and the firearm suicide rate fell by 65% - without increases in other types of deaths.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Here's a bigger picture:</span></span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Andy Kiersz/Business Insider" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/561817dbbd86ef195c8b5a7f-960/australia-gun-deaths-bi.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Andy Kiersz/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Whether the NFA catalyzed that decline, however, is still up for debate. Over the last several decades, gun deaths in most developed nations have been trending downward, and studies struggle to determine how much of the drop resulted from Australia's legislation. Causality is inherently difficult to determine in social sciences.</p><p>Regardless, many analysts do believe the<span> </span><a href="http://www.cfr.org/society-and-culture/us-gun-policy-global-comparisons/p29735">NFA was effective.</a></p><p><span>''Our gun buyback took about a fifth of our guns out of circulation, but it approximately halved the number of gun-owning households,'' said <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/12/17/australia-gun-reform-buyback-us-national-firearm-agreement/1774549/">Andrew Leigh</a>, author of an academic study on Australia's gun reform</span><span>. "If the US could dramatically decrease the number of households with guns, it would have many fewer deaths."</span></p><p>Among the reasons stands the shining fact that Australia hasn't experienced a massacre similar to Port Arthur since. Many studies do show a drop outside expected trends in gun deaths as well. And of those that have found the opposite, many <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2012/08/02/did-gun-control-work-in-australia/">have been discredited</a>.</p><h2>US vs. Australia</h2><p>Howard gave his New York Times account of the situation a bold title: "I Went After Guns. Obama Can, Too."</p><p>He did, however, acknowledge Australia's differences from the US: a more urban society, nothing similar to the US Bill of Rights or Second Amendment, and no organization like the National Rifle Association.</p><p>The US is also arguably in a tougher position than Australia was in 1996. America has one of the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list#data">highest rates of gun ownership</a> in the world.</p><p><span>Reacting to a shooting at Umpqua Community College in October 2015 which killed 9 people, US President </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-statement-oregon-shooting-2015-10">Barack Obama reiterated points</a><span> he's made before: that the</span><span> US is the "</span><span>only advanced country in the world that sees these mass shootings every few months" and "<span>this type of mass violence does not happen in other developed countries."</span></span></p><p>And although statistics vary, criticisms like Obama's about the frequency of massacres aren't incorrect.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reutres</span></p><p class="caption">Mick Roelandts, firearms reform project manager for the New South Wales Police, looks at a pile of about 4,500 prohibited firearms in Sydney that have been handed in 1997 under the Australian government's buy-back scheme.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>For example, from 1966 to 2012, t<span>he US accounted for 31% of mass shootings around the world, <span>Adam Lankford,</span><span> an associate professor at the University of Alabama Department of Criminal Justice, recently told <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-leads-world-in-mass-shootings-1443905359">The Wall Street Journal</a>. That's more than any other country.</span></span></p><p><span><span>On top of the tangible numbers, recent research, with data from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, suggests that mass shootings, like the recent ones in San Bernardino and California, lead to copycats and help perpetuate the violence. </span></span></p><p><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Obama knows what Australia did.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Within 13 days, the original incident is "contagious" and incites as much as 20% to 30% of subsequent shootings, according to a <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0117259#ack">study published</a> in the journal PLOS One.</span></span></p><p><span><span>And, as <a href="http://www.vox.com/cards/gun-violence-facts/gun-homicide-effect-increase">Vox has pointed out</a>, research shows a strong correlation between the amount of guns and the amount of gun homicides - on a national, state, and personal level.</span></span></p><p>Regardless of the unique challenges the US faces, Obama is well aware of Australia's massive effort - and the subsequent decline in violence.</p><p><span>"When Australia had a mass killing ... it was just so shocking the entire country said, 'Well, we're going to completely change our gun laws,' and they did.
