London, Headaches, memory problems, and fatigue -- commonly known to continue post a Covid-19 infection -- may be a result of inflammation in the rest of the body and not because SARS-CoV-2 infects the brain, claims a new research. <br /><br />Early on in the pandemic, researchers surmised that direct infection of the brain could be the cause behind these neurological symptoms. Many studies have also proposed the effect of <keyword id="19896627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid" source="keywords">Covid</keyword> virus on the brain symptoms. But a study by researchers at the Charite- Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany has now produced evidence to support the new theory.<br /><br />"We took that as our hypothesis at the start, too. But so far, there has been no clear evidence that the coronavirus can persist in the brain, let alone proliferate," said <keyword id="20621224" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dr-helena-radbruch" source="keywords">Dr Helena Radbruch</keyword>, head of the Chronic Neuroinflammation working group at the Department of Neuropathology at Charite.<br /><br />"For that, we would have needed to find evidence of intact virus particles in the brain, for example. Instead, the indications that the coronavirus could infect the brain come from indirect testing methods, so they aren't entirely conclusive," <keyword id="20621226" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radbruch" source="keywords">Radbruch</keyword> added.<br /><br />According to a second hypothesis, the neurological symptoms would instead be a kind of side effect of the strong immune response the body deploys to defend against the virus.<br /><br />For the study, the team of researchers analysed various areas of the brain in 21 people who died in hospital settings, typically in an ICU, due to severe coronavirus infection. For comparison, the researchers studied nine patients who died of other causes after treatment in intensive care.<br /><br />First, they looked to see whether the tissue showed any visible changes and hunted for any indication of coronavirus. Then they conducted a detailed analysis of genes and proteins to identify the specific processes that had taken place inside individual cells.<br /><br />Like other teams of researchers before them, the Charite scientists found coronavirus genetic material in the brain in some cases.<br /><br />"But we didn't find neurons infected with SARS-CoV-2," Radbruch noted. "We assume that immune cells absorbed the virus in the body and then travelled to the brain. They're still carrying the virus, but it doesn't infect cells of the brain. So coronavirus has invaded other cells in the body, but not the brain itself."<br /><br />Still, the researchers did note striking changes in molecular processes in some cells of the brain in those infected with Covid-19: For example, the cells ramped up the interferon signalling pathway, which is typically activated in the course of a viral infection.<br /><br />"Some neurons evidently react to the inflammation in the rest of the body," said Prof. <keyword id="20621225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="christian-conrad" source="keywords">Christian Conrad</keyword>, head of the <keyword id="20621227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intelligent-imaging" source="keywords">Intelligent Imaging</keyword> working group at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charite (BIH) and one of the principal investigators in the study.<br /><br />"This molecular reaction could be a good explanation for the neurological symptoms we see in Covid-19 patients. For example, neurotransmitters emitted by these cells in the brainstem could cause fatigue. That's because the brainstem is home to groups of cells that control drive, motivation, and mood."<br /><br />Further, the team found that the neurons' reaction to the inflammation is temporary, as shown by a comparison of people who died during an acute coronavirus infection with those who died at least two weeks afterward. The molecular changes are most evident during the acute infection phase, but they do normalise again afterward -- at least in the vast majority of cases.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An investigation by NBC details claims of abuse by two Christian programs run on Wyoming ranches.</li><li>Former attendees said they were traumatized, physically injured, and subjected to cruel punishment.</li></ul><p>Former attendees of two Christian programs for at-risk youth said they had traumatizing experiences full of hard labor and strange punishments, according to an in-depth investigation by <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/wyoming-christian-troubled-teen-ranches-abuse-rcna46112">NBC News' Tyler Kingkade </a>published Wednesday.</p><p>The programs, which are run by the same family on nearby ranches in rural Wyoming, include Trinity Teen Solutions for girls and Triangle Cross Ranch for boys. More than 20 women who attended the girls' ranch between 2007 and 2020 told NBC they were subjected to brutal manual labor that left them physically injured.</p><p>"From the time we woke up in the morning to the time we went back to sleep, we were always doing work. Always," 19-year-old Taybre Conrad told NBC. "And they were having us do the type of stuff that grown men do."</p><p>Former attendees said staff restricted their meals and forced them to dodge rattlesnakes on runs. Three women said they were tied to a goat with a leash for days after ranch employees called them "stubborn."</p><p>One of the attendees of the boys' ranch told NBC he had a lasting scar after employees branded his arm in the shape of a cross in 2012.</p><p>Trinity Teen Solutions and Triangle Cross Ranch did not respond to Insider's requests for comment. The ranch owners also declined to comment to NBC.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.codyenterprise.com/news/local/article_2636d50c-34eb-11eb-8e63-e3723ba2296b.html">lawsuit</a> filed by former attendees in December 2020 accused the ranches of human trafficking, abuse, forced labor, and negligent infliction of emotional distress. </p><p>The lawsuit said attendees were forced to be silent for weeks at a time, slept in unheated quarters, were deprived of food and sleep, had restricted access to a bathroom, and were treated by unqualified therapists.</p><p>The family that owns the ranches denied the accusations in the lawsuit, the <a href="https://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/crime-and-courts/federal-case-filed-against-park-county-teen-centers/article_6ac1bac2-0308-506d-ba24-378d19cbaf4a.html">Casper Star-Tribune</a> reported at the time.</p><p>"Trinity denies these allegations, we have never used our patients to do forced or unpaid labor," Angela Woodward, who runs the girls' ranch, said. "The population that we work with at our program are a very difficult and high risk population of patients. They have had many treatment failures prior to parents sending them to Trinity as a last resort to help their daughter."</p>

<p>Riggs climbed rocks along the shoreline in the dark and knocked on the door of the first house he saw early Wednesday.</p>
<p>"He came to the right house," said Angela Byrd, whose dog's barking awakened her. She found 46-year-old Riggs outside, soaking wet and barefoot.</p>
<p>"He said, 'I've been swimming since sundown; I need help,' " she told the Daily Times (http://delmarvane.ws/1br0g0C).</p>
<p>Byrd called 911 and rescuers were soon on their way to the 16-foot Carolina Skiff that capsized near Deal Island, southwest of Salisbury on <keyword id="105921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Maryland">Maryland</keyword>'s Eastern Shore. Life jackets saved the boaters' lives, Sgt. Brian Albert of the Maryland Natural Resources Police said.</p>
<p>A Maryland State Police helicopter hovered above the boat as firefighters from Deal Island, Mount Vernon and Fairmount in Somerset County and Westside in Wicomico County pulled alongside. The U.S. Coast Guard also was on the scene, Albert said.</p>
<p>Contessa Riggs of Washington said she clung to the boat for five hours with her 3-year-old son, Conrad Drake; her 70-year-old father, a retired commercial waterman also named John Riggs, and his 9-year-old granddaughter, Emily Horn, a fourth-grader visiting from the San Francisco Bay area.</p>
<p>"I've never been so happy to see search <keyword id="6460009" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="boats">boats</keyword> in my life," she said Wednesday by telephone. "It took him five hours to swim ashore. He had to stop and grab a crab pot buoy and rest, then swim.</p>
<p>"We clinged to the side of the boat and got stung by sea nettles in the dark," she said.</p>
<p>Riggs' 9-year-old niece, Emily, calls Riggs a "real hero." She added that the next time the family goes fishing, "I'll go if the water is really shallow."</p>

Prince Charles' goddaughter India Hicks shared unseen photos of her royal wedding dress, which took 17 months to design

Berlin, Apr 8 () Scientists have discovered which cells of the lungs and bronchi are targets for novel coronavirus infection, findings that may aid in the development of novel drug candidates to treat COVID-19.<p> The study, published in The EMBO Journal, revealed that the receptor for the virus is abundantly expressed in the progenitor cells of the respiratory tract which have hair-like projections to sweep mucus and bacteria out of the lungs.</p><p> Researchers, including those from the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) in Germany, analysed samples of twelve lung cancer patients obtained from the Heidelberg Lung Biobank in Germany. </p><p> They also studied cells from the airways of healthy patients, which had been collected in a minimally invasive manner during a bronchoscopy examination performed to rule out lung cancer. </p><p> "I was convinced that the data we gathered from these non-coronavirus infected patients would provide important information for understanding the viral infection," said study co-author Roland Eils from BIH.</p><p> "We wanted to find out which specific cells the coronavirus attacks," explained Christian Conrad, who also works at the BIH. </p><p> The scientists said the virus' spike protein attaches to an ACE2 receptor on the cell surface. </p><p> In addition, they said the virus needs one or more co-factors for it to be able to penetrate cells. </p><p> Using single-cell sequencing technology, the researchers sequenced the genome of 60,000 cells.</p><p> "We then analysed a total of nearly 60,000 cells to determine whether they activated the gene for the receptor and potential co-factors, thus in principle allowing them to be infected by the coronavirus," said Soeren Lukassen, one of the lead authors of the study.</p><p> "We only found the gene transcripts for ACE2 and for the cofactor TMPRSS2 in very few cells, and only in very small numbers," Lukassen said.</p><p> The scientists discovered that certain progenitor cells in the bronchi are mainly responsible for producing the coronavirus receptors. </p><p> These progenitor cells, they said, normally develop into respiratory tract cells lined with hair-like projections called cilia that sweep mucus and bacteria out of the lungs. </p><p> "Armed with the knowledge of which cells are attacked, we can now develop targeted therapies," explained co-author Michael Kreuter from the Thorax Clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany.</p><p> According to the study, the ACE2 receptor density on the cells increased with age, and was generally higher in men than in women. </p><p> "This was only a trend, but it could explain why SARS-CoV-2 has infected more men than women," Eils said. </p><p> However, the scientists said the sample sizes are too small to make conclusive statements, adding that the study needs to be repeated in larger patient cohorts.</p><p> "These results show us that the virus acts in a highly selective manner, and that it is dependent on certain human cells in order to spread and replicate," Eils explained. </p> "The better we understand the interaction between the virus and its host, the better we will be able to develop effective counterstrategies," he added. But are no where to be found when I'm 'unproblematic' and doing well. I hope they enjoyed that paycheck they got from the views though!"</p><p>Since the 30-year-old beauty YouTuber's tweet specifically referred to people cashing in on video views concerning her disastrous lipstick launch, many drama channels who cover YouTuber scandals for a living assumed Hill's comment was about them. The response to Hill's first tweet was largely negative, since most drama, tea, and commentary channels only cover <keyword id="860150" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTubers">YouTubers</keyword> when there's news to discuss, not to praise a creator who's doing well.</p><p>Some, including Nick Snider, responded <a href="https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1301717968737296395/photo/1">with comments like</a>, "Because you aren't having drama around you. People are actually happy for you," while others, like Here For The Tea, said, "hope you've enjoyed ALL of the pay checks you've earned by lying, taking advantage of your subscribers and selling subpar/contaminated products."</p><p>Then, in a since-deleted tweet, Hill clarified that she was talking about her "fellow influencers," not drama channels. </p><p>"I'm not talking about the 'haters' or the gossip channels," Hill wrote in response to a fan wondering why she seemed to be asking for "negative energy." "Im referring to my piers [sic]. My fellow influencers. Those whom I support &amp; ried [sic] for. Im referring to this industry &amp; im reflecting on my ups &amp; downs."</p><p>Here For The Tea posted that tweet to her Instagram page, where Hill's fellow beauty YouTuber Jackie Aina commented with a scorching response. </p><p>"I'm not sure which peers she's referring to here but she sure has hell paid ALL my collaborations dust chile," Aina wrote. "I've supported every single thing that she's launched, and yet crickets for years....very hurtful NGL. Either way, I still admire her work ethic and her ability to continue doing what she does because it isn't easy!"</p><p>Aina's response seemed to provoke Hill's apology. She wrote that she "was very emotional &amp; should have put my phone down instead of reacting childish." Hill also said she wasn't referring to fans, drama channels, or "certain influencers that have now been brought into this."</p><p>"I was upset because of stuff going on behind the scenes &amp; should have kept my mouth 100% shut. Because now it's turning into something that I didn't even see coming cause I reacted so quickly without thinking," Hill wrote. Jaclyn Hill apologized for tweets about fellow influencers not supporting her after she was called out by fans and YouTubers

All promotions will be effective from January 1 next year.</span></p><p><span>18% of those promoted were women, <a href="https://www.fnlondon.com/articles/here-are-credit-suisses-new-managing-directors-20181217">according to a report from Financial News.</a></span></p><p><span>Geographically speaking, 98 of those promoted were in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 35 of those based in the bank's London office.</span></p><p>"At Credit Suisse, we believe that progress is driven by people who take responsible ownership of their decisions and actions," the bank said in a memo.</p><p>"Today we are proud to introduce our new Managing Directors who will carry forward Credit Suisse's commitment to making change happen and creating value for our clients."</p><p><span>Credit Suisse's round of promotions is slightly larger than at other banks to announce their list. </span></p><p><span>Citigroup just <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citigroup-promotes-125-to-managing-director-heres-the-full-list-2018-12">promoted a new class of 125 </a><span>managing directors. Bank of America Merrill Lynch <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-merrill-lynch-2018-internal-md-promotion-full-list-2018-11">promoted nearly 140 </a>employees to MD in late November. Morgan Stanley <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanleys-new-managing-director-list-is-out-2018-1">promoted 153 employees</a> to MD in January- up from the 140 it promoted in 2017. Barclays<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-names-85-new-managing-directors-2018-12?r=UK&amp;IR=T"> last week promoted 85 staff to MD level.</a></span></span></p><p><span><span>At Goldman Sachs, where MD is one rung below the prestigious role of partner and the classes are announced every two years, 509 employees were promoted to MD in 2017 and 69 were promoted to partner <a <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhZjUC2Put0">Screenshot Via YouTube</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>University of Virginia associate dean of students Nicole Eramo may have just caught a big break in her <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uva-dean-nicole-eramo-sues-rolling-stone-for-defamation-2015-5">ongoing defamation lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine</a>.</p><p>In Rolling Stone's now-retracted article "A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA," Eramo is depicted as indifferent to UVA student Jackie's alleged gang rape at a campus fraternity party. The article claims Eramo did nothing in response to Jackie's allegations and told the student that UVA did not publish its sexual assault data "because nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school."</p><p>This week, <a href="http://www.dailyprogress.com/news/local/uva/judge-signs-order-to-compel-jackie-to-release-documents-in/article_ba1df5e8-c475-11e5-b8a7-8322db8c7aa2.html">according to The Daily Progress</a>, US District Judge Glen Conrad ruled that Jackie has to turn over to the court any communication with Eramo, Rolling Stone, or "A Rape on Campus" author Sabrina Rubin Erdely, who is also a defendant in the lawsuit.</p><p>Much - if not all - of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whats-wrong-with-uva-gang-rape-story-2015-4">Jackie's story has since been disproved</a> by media reports, a police investigation, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rolling-stone-biggest-mistake-uva-story-2015-4">a report by Columbia Journalism School</a> that Rolling Stone published in April 2015.</p><p>As <a href="https://reason.com/blog/2016/01/28/judge-says-rolling-stones-jackie-must-su">Reason points out</a>, Eramo not only needs to prove that Jackie lied about the dean's actions and statements, but that Erdely and Rolling Stone were aware the student was likely not telling the truth and published its article anyway.</p><p>"Jackie was the primary source for Rolling Stone's false and defamatory article," Eramo's attorney told The Daily Progress. "It appears that Jackie fabricated the account of the sexual assault portrayed in Rolling Stone and that Rolling Stone knew she was an unreliable source. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Steve Helber</span></p><p class="caption">In this, January 15, 2015, photo, students participating in rush pass by the Phi Kappa Psi house at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A judge ordered the former University of Virginia (UVA) student known as <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/06/business/media/jackie-in-rolling-stone-rape-article-must-testify-in-defamation-suit.html?smid=tw-share">"Jackie" on Thursday to give a deposition</a> in a defamation lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine, The New York Times reported.</p><p>The deposition will be the first time Jackie has given a sworn statement about the allegations she made in the now-retracted 2014 article that detailed a gang rape on the UVA campus.</p><p><span>Last Thursday, Jackie's lawyers argued that "she would be 're-traumatized' if she is compelled to recount her ordeal in proceedings under oath," and asked the judge to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2016/03/30/lawyers-for-jackie-in-rolling-stone-lawsuit-protest-under-oath-deposition-say-it-could-re-traumatize-her/">cancel the deposition</a> originally scheduled for April 5, according to The Washington Post.</span></p><p><span>The lawsuit was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uva-dean-nicole-eramo-sues-rolling-stone-for-defamation-2015-5">brought by Nicole Eramo, UVA's associate dean of students</a>,<span> against Rolling Stone, as well as Wenner Media and Sabrina Rubin Erdely, the article's author.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The story, "A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA," depicts Eramo as indifferent to Jackie's alleged gang rape at a campus fraternity party. The article claims that Eramo did nothing in response to Jackie's allegations and told the student that UVA did not publish its sexual-assault data "because nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school."</span></span></p><p><span><span>Eramo is seeking nearly $8 million in damages - $7.5 million in compensatory damages for reputational harm and $350,000 in punitive damages. Eramo's lawyers argue that this evidence against Jackie's previous statements should be reason for her to be deposed.</span></span></p><p><span>But Jackie's lawyers fought the deposition, describing their client as "a sexual assault victim who has suffered repeated revictimizations, including by Dean Eramo in this very lawsuit," according to court documents cited by The Washington Post.</span></p><p>"Forcing her to revisit her sexual assault, and then the re-victimization that took place after the Rolling Stone article came out, will inevitably lead to a worsening of her symptoms and current mental health," the documents read.</p><p>Much - if not all - of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whats-wrong-with-uva-gang-rape-story-2015-4">the Rolling Stone story, which the magazine published in April 2015, has since been disproved</a> by media reports, a police investigation, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rolling-stone-biggest-mistake-uva-story-2015-4">a report by Columbia's journalism school</a>.</p><p>"There is no evidence whatsoever that the story that Jackie told her friends, or the very different story she told Rolling Stone, actually transpired," Eramo's lawyers write in court documents cited by The Washington Post. "Instead, it appears that Jackie fabricated her perpetrator and the details of the alleged assault."</p><p>Tuesday's ruling, by <span>Chief Judge Glen Conrad of the Western District of Virginia, orders that Jackie be available for questioning by Rolling Stone and Eramo's lawyers. <p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><span><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span></span>In <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> IT, things move so quickly that it's often hard to keep up. But you can listen to industry leaders and learn what they're seeing.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Tidemark CEO Christian Gheorghe is one of those visionaries.&#xa0;</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em; font-size: 15px;">After successfully launching three startups, including his last one that </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/christian-gheorghe-rags-to-riches-story-2014-5">sold to SAP for $500 million</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em; font-size: 15px;">, Gheorghe is now running a business analytics software company called Tidemark.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We caught up with Gheorghe this week to see what the latest trends are in business software. Here's what he had to say:</span></p>
<p class="p2" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>1. Back office is the new front office.</strong>&#xa0;What used to be an isolated, IT-oriented, back-end management software is now sexy. It's become easier to use, has better features, and targets a broader user base. It's simplifying a lot of the complicated back end work, like payroll or employee benefits, and is reimagining the entire workflow process, Gheorghe says. And VCs are pouring their money into it. For example, Zenefits, which is changing the way HR is done (benefits, payroll, tracking vacations) has raised over $83 million, and is expected to grow its user base 1,600% this year. Its CEO Parker Conrad claims Zenefits is the fastest-growing business software Silicon Valley has ever seen. "It's leading to the grand disappearance of the traditional enterprise stack," Gheorghe says.</span></p>
<p class="p2" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>2. Big data is moving to smart data.</strong>&#xa0;It's been quite a while since we've heard about big data. In fact, most companies still don't know what to do with all the data they collect. So there's an explosion of software that promises to offer ways to extract real value from data. For example, Gheorghe's company Tidemark allows finance people to ask any type of question, and it automatically answers with charts and graphs. Salesforce.com has also been making a move in this space with the launch of its big data analytics platform Wave, and the acquisition of RelateIQ, another big data startup. "How do you extract things from a sea of data? We answer things people didn't even know they could ask," Gheorghe says.</span></p>
<p class="p2" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>3. Security.&#xa0;</strong>This is a big brewing story in enterprise software, as hacks of major companies like Target and Sony are suffering huge exposure from recent hacks. There are a bunch of enterprise startups trying to help companies stop these attacks, like FireEye (which monitors networks for weird occurrences), Tanium (which lets companies look at individual machines), and Area 1 (which is trying to help crack down on social engineering). He also mentioned offhandedly that he thinks Amazon is a lot more secure than iCloud.&#xa0;<br /></span></p>
