Call it ironic but leading job portal Indeed that helps thousands land their dream jobs has itself laid off 2,200 employees, or 15 per cent of its workforce. An 'heartbroken' Indeed CEO <keyword id="16914342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chris-hyams" source="Orion">Chris Hyams</keyword> announced that job cuts come from nearly every team, function, level and region at Indeed and Indeed Flex. "We anticipate we will be letting approximately 2,200 people go. This is roughly 15 per cent of our team. The specific decisions on who and where to cut were extremely difficult, but they were made with great care," he said in a blog post late on Wednesday. "Leading a company whose mission is to help people get jobs, every single day I think about how important a job is in a person's life. Losing a job is extraordinarily hard, financially and emotionally," he added. The CEO said he will take a 25 per cent cut in base pay. Additionally, more than 75 per cent of "my total compensation is directly tied to Indeed revenue growth, and is at risk given current trends," he said. The company will share information directly with everyone impacted and everyone outside of the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Japan will receive an email informing them of their status. If your position has been eliminated, the subject will be "Your Position Has Been Impacted." If your position has not been eliminated, the subject will be "Your Position Has Not Been Impacted." "In the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Japan, unfortunately, local regulations will mean a longer wait. We will communicate with all of you today to outline the specifics in your region," said the CEO. Under the severance agreement, employees will receive 16 weeks of base salary, or two weeks for every year of service, whichever is greater. "A cash payout equivalent to your RSUs scheduled to vest on May 1. For employees whose initial grant date was August 1, 2022 or later, you will receive a partial payout for RSUs that vest on May 1 with the standard one year vesting cliff waived," <keyword id="9154304" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hyams" source="Orion">Hyams</keyword> informed. The payout will be calculated at the closing stock price on February 1. Last quarter, US total job openings were down 3.5 per cent year over year, while sponsored job volumes were down 33 per cent. "The blank query essentially says 'show me what you've got.'" Hymes told BI that generative AI can, like a human recruiter, help explain why a job might be a good fit for someone like his daughter — even if the role deviates from her career path or experience."What we can do is go to generative AI and say, 'Here's a person. Here's a job. Tell me why this is a good fit.' Companies report they can't find good candidates, but they may not always be doing proactive outreach or including critical information in their job postings."So we educate employers," Jensen said. "You need to include your salary in your job listing. You need to include specifics about the location, the work hours — all of the things people care about."Jensen said Indeed tells companies that it's important to reach out to candidates and invite them to apply. "Outreach on the part of employers is so valuable and drives better results for job seekers and employers."Indeed is focusing on the pain of the job seeker and how Pathfinder might identify ways to pivot or reinforce an existing career path."It will be a broadening of our message to be a lifelong talent agent," Jensen said. "To help people know that we are in their corner when they're in a seeking mode for a job, or just trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up."

Indeed prepares for 2025 rollout of its new AI tool, Pathfinder, which aims to help job seekers

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some employers are waiving degree requirements, yet it's not leading to widespread hiring.</li><li>Employers might not ask if you have a degree, but many still care, a labor market expert told BI.</li></ul>When a job posting states that the role <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-openings-bachelors-college-degree-no-education-requirements-2024-2">doesn't require a degree</a>, Ranji McMillan starts to worry.More than likely, she said, the job will be in sales or involve work that's not a good match for her experience."If someone says that they're not looking for a degree, you have to look at what they want you to do because it just seems like they're going to give you crap work," McMillan told Business Insider.McMillan is 42 and lives in the Northridge section of Los Angeles. She's been looking for work for more than a year and a half. McMillan has an associate degree but not a bachelor's. Yet, she has more than a decade of experience managing the merchandise used in photo shoots for big-name retailers.When she looks at job listings, she estimates that she runs into a formal degree requirement most of the time.McMillan is one of millions of US workers bumping up against what's sometimes called the paper ceiling. It's happening even as more employers are setting aside requirements that applicants for some jobs have bachelor's degrees. The goal is often framed around wanting to hire for skills, not pedigree, yet many bosses have been slow to take the next step: actually bringing on workers who don't hold four-year degrees.<div type="image" title="Ranji McMillan" height="989" width="1600" msid="114401257" hostid="261" sizebytes="127056"></div>David Deming, a professor of political economy at Harvard's Kennedy School, told BI that while some employers might no longer require a bachelor's degree for certain roles, those doing the hiring still might care whether an applicant has one."Firms are wanting credit for removing a requirement, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're changing their hiring at the end of the day," he said.Deming said many employers look upon a worker with a four-year degree as an investment — one that can be molded into what the firm wants.<h2 id="69b8e63e-70be-4448-99d6-752bcbe1d346">Hiring based on skills</h2>The Burning Glass Institute, a nonprofit that examines the future of work and learning, and Harvard Business School found in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hbs.edu/managing-the-future-of-work/Documents/research/Skills-Based%20Hiring.pdf">study</a> released in early 2024 that even when employers hire people without four-year degrees for roles that once required them, it doesn't occur in large numbers.Hiring for skills or experience rather than for formal education accounted for just one in 700 hires in 2023, the study found.The researchers examined more than 11,000 roles at large firms and compared hiring at least a year before and after the employer ditched a degree requirement. The study reviewed changes in roles from 2014 to 2023.Reluctance by some employers to bring on workers without four-year degrees matters because only about 36% of people 25 and older in the US had a bachelor's degree or higher in 2023, according to the Census Bureau.In part, that's because the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-skipping-college-living-paycheck-to-paycheck-2024-5">high cost of tuition</a> can be a major barrier.<h2 id="448d7f69-1fca-482e-a27e-c42712ac78c2">A boost for employers</h2>Adding workers based on their abilities rather than what's on their résumé can be a win for business. The consulting firm McKinsey &amp; Company, citing research, notes that hiring for skills is "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/taking-a-skills-based-approach-to-building-the-future-workforce">five times more predictive</a>" of how someone performs on a job than hiring based on educational attainment and more than twice as predictive than hiring based on a person's work history.Boston Consulting Group research found that those hired based on their skills tend to get promoted at about the same pace as traditional hires yet <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2023/rise-of-skills-based-hiring">stay with an employer</a> for 9% longer.Still, Mona Mourshed, the founding CEO of Generation, a nonprofit network focused on economic mobility, told BI that while many notable and large organizations support skills-first hiring, "the vast majority of employers are not there yet in terms of their practice."She said Generation recently completed nearly 100 interviews with large and midsize employers around the world, including in the US, asking what goes into their hiring decisions. Much of it, she said, comes down to hiring managers wanting to limit risk. Often, it's easiest to go with a résumé that looks similar to what previous hires have had, Mourshed said."Employers will only hire a different profile when they are desperate for talent," she said.Mourshed said that even for organizations that might be open to looking first at skills, cuts to HR departments in recent years have stretched some recruiting teams. That means there could be fewer people to take a second look at someone who doesn't hold the typical academic qualifications, she said.<h2 id="3055d66a-7df6-45c2-8c68-1871f46e67be">The 'easiest and laziest filter'</h2>Chris Hyams, CEO of Indeed, told BI that for many jobs, employers simply default to the degree."What people are looking for, because it's the easiest and laziest filter, is a four-year degree from a 'good school,'" he said.But that's often short-sighted, Hyams said. He pointed to the plight of his brother-in-law, whom Hyams described as "a brilliant guy" who didn't finish college. Instead, he built and ran a music studio before becoming a Salesforce administrator, Hyams said. Yet, he has had a difficult time finding work after losing his job about a year and a half ago."He's been the finalist for five different positions where they said, 'You're actually the best candidate we interviewed, but we require a four-year degree,'" Hyams said. "It's the dumbest thing."According to BCG, there are 70 million workers in America who are so-called STARs — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bcg.com/publications/2023/rise-of-skills-based-hiring">skilled through alternative routes</a>.<h2 id="38c1ee96-779b-4954-8bf5-e31158131cde">Workers will need more training</h2>In the coming years, many workers will need more, not less, learning to do their jobs. The US Department of Education forecasts that by 2027, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ed.gov/about/ed-initiatives/raise-bar/raise-the-bar-postsecondary-and-career-pathways">70% of jobs</a> will require schooling or training beyond high school.Often, that might mean a four-year degree. Researchers at the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce estimate that 42% of jobs in 2031 will require candidates to have at least <a target="_blank" href="https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/projections2031/#resources">a bachelor's degree</a>, while 28% of jobs will need someone to have a high school diploma or less.Bethlam Forsa, CEO of Savvas Learning Company, which produces instructional materials for kindergarten through high school students, told BI that there's often a gap between the "job-ready" skills students possess and what employers seek. She said research has shown that students who don't want to attend college are often not told about alternative paths like internships or career and technical education programs."We have a system that's primarily college-bound," Forsa said.She also said employers might need to adapt their evaluation methods to better assess what job seekers can do. Employers could, for example, look to any certifications an applicant might have earned as a way to hire for skills, not a college degree, Forsa said.The research firm Gartner reported in July that 74% of HR leaders it surveyed believe that most employers are shifting the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/5618392">focus of how they manage talent</a> to skills. Yet only about four in 10 surveyed reported that their organizations had implemented processes that would enable this to play out.Focusing on skills can also be a way to keep people within an organization, not just hire them, according to Jon Lester, the vice president of HR technology, data, and AI at IBM.He told BI that nearly a decade ago, the average IBMer spent 31 hours a year learning new skills. By 2023, that was up to 87 hours. All of this learning, Lester said, assists with retention. It also sits at the heart of how IBM compensates its employees, he said."People get salary increases mostly because of the skills they've learned," Lester said.Research supports that thinking. According to McKinsey, skills learned at work contribute 46% of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/mckinsey/business%20functions/people%20and%20organizational%20performance/our%20insights/the%20state%20of%20organizations%202023/the-state-of-organizations-2023.pdf">average person's lifetime earnings</a>.For her part, as McMillan continues to search for a job, she often breaks down in tears — sometimes several times a week.She said she's been filling out surveys and doing whatever else she can to earn a few extra dollars. Last month, a friend gave her a $50 grocery store gift card to help her get by.When McMillan looks at job listings and contemplates whether a degree is necessary, she said she thinks that even if she had a bachelor's, it would have "dust on it by now.""I definitely would have had to evolve by now if I did get that 20 years ago," she said.Do you have something to share about what you're seeing in the workplace or in your job search? Computer technology, the thinking went, would make a lot of jobs go away, Altman said."To me, the most obvious thing was, 'Well, if that's the case, I better, like, get really good at using this tool,'" Altman said.OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/open-ai-sam-altman-equity-stake-valuation-private-nonprofit-9">working to revamp its structure into a for-profit business</a>, which could leave Altman billions of dollars richer. He didn't discuss that with Hyams nor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-talent-exodus-joke-tech-world-mira-murati-sam-altman-2024-9">the recent exit of the company's CTO, Mira Murati</a>.<h2 id="bbf2dbf8-59b4-451f-9389-d476d3131384">Computer science has been a boon</h2>Altman's comments appeared to indicate that he thought AI would bring more benefits than downsides, similar to the way computer software has."The story on computer programming has been a huge net positive. It has made some classes of jobs go away. It's made way more new things happen and also given us the ability to do a lot of new things," Altman said.Altman also said that, in retrospect, it was a "really good decision" that he became comfortable with computer programming. Altman said he thinks the same principle holds now.He suggested that high school and college students should consider how to build experiences, products, and services that people will want and will find useful is important."That seems like a really valuable thing — more than any specific set of knowledge," he said.<h2 id="6b826d83-f2d0-4884-92db-793cf364f8f5">Human creativity will evolve</h2>Hyams asked Altman how human creativity would evolve given the prevalence of AI.Altman pointed to the invention of the camera and concerns that images would replace any need for paintings or other types of art. Eventually, he said, artists saw it as an "incredible new tool.""I think we're going to see the same thing happen here," he said."It's always tempting to call at the end of creativity. It will not happen. I don't believe it will happen," he said. But as the tool changes, he said, the output will change.Altman said it's incredible to see what artists are doing with image generators.<h2 id="ca74497e-d0c3-48b4-93e5-08339303cec4">AI could cure cancer</h2>He recounted a recent conversation with a scientist who told him that AI will be able to cure cancer one day. That might require human hands to run experiments at AI's direction, and while the whole process might take a while, the result could be a fix for a type of cancer.Altman said he agreed on AI's potential for delivering on that type of health moonshot.The doctor, Altman said, stated he was, in one way, sad at the prospect that AI would notch that achievement. "I wanted to be the one to do it," the doctor said, according to Altman. The doctor also said while he wants to see a cure for cancer as soon as possible, he'd like to see a tool that would tell him, "Go investigate this." But that same tool wouldn't quite give the answer. "Then I still get to do it," the doctor told Altman.For his part, Altman said, he's excited for a day when AI might outrun him."I think it'll be awesome when AI can do my job better, but I've been doing it for a while, and, you know, I got to have the fun part."

He also said that, unlike with earlier tech waves, workers might not be able to simply build their skills to inoculate themselves against job losses.Yet despite all the worrying about how AI might pillory the job market, people from execs to students appear to be pushing ahead with what Altman would recommend: going deep on the tech.Altman noted that computer programming was already popular when he was in school but "nothing like" today. "People would say the same things — many of the same things — they say about AI now," he said.<h2 id="42e47c15-c9d2-41b8-8165-9bcfd3109d99">Humans have a lot of skills</h2>Another point for the don't-worry camp came from a new Indeed study identifying more than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hiringlab.org/2024/09/25/artificial-intelligence-skills-at-work/">2,800 work skills</a>. The job site's researchers, using lengthy prompts with a generative AI tool, determined that none of those skills were "very likely" to be replaced by GenAI.Svenja Gudell, Indeed's chief economist, told BI that so-called upskilling can offer big benefits but isn't "magic." She said some people could still lose their jobs due to technological advancements."They'll have to figure out how to use these tools. It won't be easy," Gudell said.But "at least with the technology that we're seeing today, it's not the kind of AI automation where you have smart robots working in warehouses," she said.Khosla, who cofounded Sun Microsystems and who has invested in OpenAI, had warned that bipedal robots were one of the developments that would imperil humans' abilities to hang onto their jobs.Before the robots show up to stock store shelves, they'd be more likely to come for desk jobs.For now, Indeed's Gudell said, there's been a pickup in demand and pay for people well-versed in aspects of AI."If you're a prompt engineer — if you're a machine learning engineer that can actually program some of this stuff — you're getting a very healthy wage increase," Gudell said.One of the professions that would appear most at risk of an AI takeover is coding. Yet, as BI previously reported, some experienced software engineers contend that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-threaten-jobs-of-coders-who-dont-shift-their-focus-2024-9">AI will help</a> them get more done without taking over their jobs because their work extends well beyond coding.<h2 id="653e0433-efd1-4f58-872b-0e198cde70cf">Kids are still learning to code</h2>It seems worries about an AI job-pocalypse aren't deterring some people from going big on tech, as Altman advises.Edward Kim is vice president of education and training at Code Ninjas. The company teaches software engineering to kids ages five to 14 through in-person classes in the US, Canada, and the UK.He told BI the company is seeing strong demand from people hoping to open franchise locations. Within two years, the company plans to add 200 locations on top of the more than 350 it has now.The professional coders Kim talks to already use AI to do things like generating starter code. But these engineers aren't that worried about getting pushed out of their jobs, he said, because coders are working for people who need them to do more than just write line after line in various programming languages.Employers need "someone with a real-world context to put the right adaptation to it, to make it applicable to something in the real world, so it can be useful," Kim said (aka: be a human).A couple of years ago, Code Ninjas' students might take around 18 months to become proficient in a new language. Now, he said, it's closer to six to 12 months for those same languages."It shows that the kids that are coming up have an increasing thirst for this type of knowledge," Kim said.It's a desire to learn that Altman indicated he showed back when he was a student. He said computer programming had been a net positive."It has made some classes of jobs go away," Altman said. "It's about how to help people navigate their choices in a format that feels conversational," she said, "to help you find whatever it is in the world that makes you happy."The following has been edited for length and clarity.How are you and other business leaders driving AI adoption in companies?Companies are trying to decide how much to focus on big, bold, transformational projects versus more bottoms-up adoption.A lot of leaders have come to the realization that you can't totally mandate AI. You need to have some bottoms-up adoption. You need to have champions. You need to have people sharing stories of how it made their lives better.For people who haven't yet experienced it, it can feel scary. But if you have peers sharing stories of tools they're using, how it's helping, and how it's making life simpler, and there's peer-to-peer sharing and learning, that helps it catch on.There are certain AI capabilities that we want to use more systematically. So, for example, in our sales organization, we have software for coaching, so we're saying, we want you to use it this way. Because we want people to have coaching conversations, and here's a tool that will enable it. It's here to make it simpler.It can be completely overwhelming if you try to change everything all at once. So you have to start with use cases that solve a real problem. Pick a use case and show how AI tools are really helping to solve this in a simpler, faster way, and then you can start to naturally build from that.If you try to eat the whole elephant at the same time, it's just too overwhelming. In a lot of change initiatives, you have to get some wins, and you have to show people the wins. If it sounds like you're talking a big game, you can lose people.Are there practical ways that companies are encouraging their teams to start using AI?Companies can see how every piece of software they run their businesses on is going to come with AI capabilities.People learn how to use new software all the time, so if the next generation of software is all coming with built-in AI capabilities, it actually isn't so scary. It becomes a feature inside of something they already use that helps make their work faster, easier, and better.In our organization, we've given people the ability to use things that are common — like how to use ChatGPT appropriately. We also have tools like Glean, and so many other software providers are coming out with AI-enabled capabilities. People are using Zoom and its AI to synthesize hourlong meetings after the fact.That's one very practical thing that everyone's living through right now, and it's an easy way to step into the problem.How are you and other C-suite leaders thinking differently about guiding their organizations through this rapid change?There is a lot of reflection about how to keep learning new things. The pace of change is accelerating, and that means we all have to be constant learners and students of the business.When you see what technologies can do, it also means that traditional ways of thinking about functions may start to make less sense than they used to. You have to actually think about these problems from a different lens.Some of the core problem-solving capabilities: How do you design better workflows and operational flows? How do you help excite people who feel daunted because things are changing? Those are skills that become more and more important.It is also crucial that leaders within C-suites understand more about other functions than they do today. You can have lots of different functional leaders who grew up in and have expertise in their function — but when you're solving customer problems, you're solving operational problems. These are customer problems, end to end.At Salesforce's Dreamforce this year, we listened to the Salesforce head of customer success say that what they used most was Data Cloud, which most people think is for the technical people. And they use Marketing Cloud because most of customer success is actually marketing-led outreach at scale.So those two disciplines together are actually more important for my success and customer success than what people would normally think. Technology is making the lines between functions more blurred than they have been in the past.What do today's C-suite leaders need to leave behind? What doesn't work anymore?Some of this is typical leadership advice, but there are people who have ascended in a particular function based on their competence in that function.The challenge in this moment in leadership is to reimagine how all these things should happen. There can be some natural resistance to that. When you get to leadership, you have to keep challenging. You have to keep reinventing.The pace of change now and the potential for reinvention, it's just so much greater and so much faster than it was before. How do you think about problems more cross-functionally, more creatively, and with more potential for reinvention? Five years from now, how companies do work will be 80% different across a range of functions. People have to be willing to say, "OK, there's a much better way to do things."

He said that AI can, to some degree, help people land jobs if it's used properly. For instance, Hyams said that Indeed's AI technology, which recommends opportunities to its site visitors, helps people get hired "every three seconds." Insider couldn't independently verify this claim.But though AI can be helpful, that doesn't mean its potential risks in the job market should be ignored, .he said."Despite the staggering innovation all around us, AI is still in its infancy," Hyams wrote. "If we hope to continue to benefit from the promise of AI, we need to focus considerable time and energy on addressing the risks."

Financial markets, too, have taken notice, with <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/ai-stock-market-bubble-chart-earnings-investors-hype-apple-nvidia-2023-9?_gl=1*1m7x9da*_ga*MTUzMDU0NjkyNS4xNjkxNDM3MjQ5*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY5NjQ0MTk1OC42NS4xLjE2OTY0NDM4ODcuMzcuMC4w" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">mentions of AI on earnings calls surging 366%</a> from this year's first quarter to the second quarter, according to a study by WallStreetZen. Karin Kimbrough, chief economist of LinkedIn, said at a fireside chat on Monday that there's not a lot of job talent who are considered AI proficient."It's not that employers want everyone to become an AI expert," Kimbrough said at the event. "They just want people to become AI literate."Kimbrough told Insider in an interview that AI literacy means "the ability to make use of tools to help you do your job better."That could mean "shedding some of the routine tasks that prevent you from doing more interesting work," she said, or it could mean using generative AI to help with summarizing information. It could also mean understanding when human judgment should come into play, she said.Masayoshi Son, the chief executive of SoftBank, said this week companies must lean into the technology or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/softbank-ceo-masayoshi-son-on-ai-doubters-being-left-behind-2023-10">risk getting left behind</a>. To that point, Sinclair Schuller, the co-founder of Nuvalence, a consulting firm that uses generative AI, said the nascent technology is on the fast-track to widespread adoption in the workplace. Hiring managers and bosses across sectors, he told Insider, are going to soon expect employees to embrace it. "The bottom line is that having an AI-centric mindset — by considering AI as a collaborator, and hiring and upskilling accordingly — is the key to getting the most value out of these tools," Schuller said.But even as employers rush to adopt AI tool, there are deep concerns over the impact AI might ultimately have on society. An <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/08/28/growing-public-concern-about-the-role-of-artificial-intelligence-in-daily-life/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">analysis from Pew Research Center</a> said 52% of US adults are feeling "more concerned than excited about the increased use of artificial intelligence" based on a survey done this past summer.<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/07/26/workers-views-on-the-risk-of-ai-to-their-jobs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A 2022 survey from Pew</a> shows mixed results from US workers on whether they think AI will help or hurt them in the workplace over the next 20 years. "I think the biggest shift for I think people in thinking about the impact on jobs of generative AI compared to all of the other AI that exists is that it is primarily people who thought their jobs were safer from AI that are more anxious today than ever before," Chris Hyams, chief executive officer of Indeed, told Insider.Over the last year, the labor market has remained surprisingly resilient amid the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-rate-labor-market-september-report-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Unemployment held steady at 3.8% in September</a>, and there were still about 1.5 job openings per unemployed person as of August.Hyams said the jobs where face-to-face interaction isn't needed or where a worker doesn't have to engage in much physical activity, for instance, are the ones where artificial intelligence and especially generative AI are "capable of doing a larger part of the job that you're doing right now." He clarified that this doesn't mean these jobs are necessarily more likely to vanish, but they could be susceptible to big changes."Imagine having unlimited, on-demand access to nearly infinite business knowledge," Schuller added. "Your team could use it to do anything from automating mundane tasks to streamlining processes, even developing new, intelligent insights. Used in the right way, AI could enable a 500-person company to achieve the output of 1000 employees."

Larry Lee, an employee at the jobs portal's office in Singapore, filmed himself going on a "final office snack run" at the pantry and filling up a black bag with an assortment of snacks like chips and instant noodles. "Trying not to be suspicious," said the voiceover on Lee's TikTok video — which showed him walking to the lift with his haul. Lee, who worked at Indeed.com for three months before his departure, told Insider he went back to the office on Thursday to say goodbye to his colleagues when he decided to make a fun video about his final pantry run.Despite Lee's choice of snacks in the video, he told Insider he prefers healthier snacking choices like nuts and dried fruits.The video has nearly 200,000 views and had been shared about 1,600 times since it was posted three days ago. Most comments about the video were positive, with users saying he should've taken more snacks. "What they gonna do? Fire you? Take more!" one user wrote on TikTok. There were also negative comments calling him a "cheapskate."But Lee — who now runs a travel website — said he's taking them with a pinch of salt. The second installment of Rising Voices, which is set to start on February 2, includes more production and development resources in the form of The Lab, a 12-month residency program to fund filmmakers from marginalized groups. These filmmakers will create films that highlight the ways work connects people, strengthens communities, and provides pathways for economic mobility.Indeed connects millions of people to new job opportunities every day. And the partnership aligns with Indeed's broader diversity goals, according to CEO Chris Hyams. Indeed has a front-row seat to the bias and barriers that exist in the hiring process, he said. "We've been committed for many years to using our technology to try to reduce that bias and lower barriers," Hyams told Insider. "The idea was really simple," he said. "What if, instead of spending a million dollars on one 30-second ad, we invest in 10 filmmakers to make short films about the meaning of work. And have those voices to be ones that are not typically getting that opportunity, coming from marginalized communities." The first season of Rising Voices created 650 jobs and supported 10 filmmakers with a production budget of $100,000 each. The filmmakers produced 15-minute shorts that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. Gabriela Ortega was one of the 10 directors whose short was featured at Tribeca. Her film, <a href="https://jobschangeus.com/risingvoices-huella/">"Huella,"</a> tells the story of a disenchanted flamenco dancer who transitions to a desk job and is forced to rekindle her passion by confronting a family curse. The Dominican-born filmmaker has since been accepted into the Sundance art of practice fellowship and is turning "Huella" into a feature film."The incredible work of the filmmakers in season one of Rising Voices validated our belief that talent is universal but opportunity is not. The proof is in the amazing work the filmmakers have gone on to do after the premiere at the Tribeca festival," Hyams said. Hillman Grad Productions, including Waithe herself, has said it is committed to providing mentorship to nurture the filmmakers through the process and set them up for career success in the industry. "Creating these opportunities for underrepresented voices and kickstarting their careers is fundamental to our mission here at Hillman Grad."As part of The Lab, the Rising Voices season-one filmmakers Johnson Cheng, Stacy Pascal Gaspard, and Ortega were awarded $100,000 each for their roles as filmmakers in residence."We believe that this is as impactful or more impactful as anything else we can do from a marketing perspective with that budget," Hyams said.
