<ul class="summary-list"><li>Online <keyword id="6362158" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chess">chess</keyword> content, playing, and streaming has surged during quarantine, according to YouTube and several analytics firms.</li><li>Players who spoke to Insider say the digital pastime has been a welcome distraction in a time of uncertainty. </li><li>Some players have seen their view-counts grow by thousands per day.</li></ul><p>Streaming services, games, and screens of all types have gotten more action during quarantine, but according to data from Social Blade and several analytics firms, chess content on YouTube and <keyword id="1754577" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitch">Twitch</keyword> has performed particularly well. </p><p>Chess videos have been watched more than 350 million times worldwide on YouTube since January, according to data provided to Insider by the platform, which they said showed a significant trend.</p><h2><strong>Some chess channels are gaining thousands of viewers per day</strong></h2><p>Chess channels have experienced great growth during quarantine on YouTube.</p><p>Kingscrusher, run by British chess obsessive Tryfon Gavriel, has seen gains of over <a href="https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/kingscrusher/monthly">10,000 views </a>per day.</p><p>Gavriel runs the chess website ChessWorld.net and stepped into the realm of online video after encouragement from one of the site's members, who asked him to record videos on popular chess matches. He set up his channel in 2007.</p><p>He graduated from analyzing and recounting popular matches throughout history to live commentating games as he played them. Now Gavriel has 9,000 videos and 110,000 followers on his YouTube channel and said that interest has spiked during quarantine. </p><p>Gavriel also said he has more people accessing his correspondence server, where he plays chess online. Players use the online platform to make moves in games across the world. "I'm playing a lot more people," he said. "I've got over 3,000 current games now."</p><p>It's not just Gavriel seeing a boom from chess's popularity at present. Hungarian grandmaster <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHEg3GbhtQiRHO-QA2Xkl5A/videos">Anna Rudolf</a> breaks out from the standard chess game analysis to more inventive videos for her 43,000 subscribers, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkHNBo078kM">including playing choker</a>, a combination of chess and poker.</p><h2><strong>Chess is booming on Twitch, too </strong></h2><p>According to data from SullyGnome, an analytics partner of livestreaming services provider StreamElements, chess is booming on Twitch as well. </p><p>Chess is now one of the top 20 games streamed on Twitch, with the number of hours watched increasing from around three million in March 2020 to more than eight million in May.</p><p>Chess has always been a part of Twitch – which partnered with Chess.com in 2017 – but the platform has seen significant viewership increases since the coronavirus hit. </p><p>"Nothing compares with the rise it experienced in recent months when some of the top streamers, such as xQc, Reckful, and LIRIK, streamed it," said Doron Nir, CEO of StreamElements. "While the chess community has achieved a lot of success on its own, this latest move illustrates the power of influencers to broaden the appeal of a brand."</p><p>Coleen Cusack, a US Chess Federation-rated player who competed in the 1990s, has been a devoted chess watcher on Twitch since starting to watch after self-isolating due to COVID-19 in mid-March. "Twitch is a platform that has made chess appealing and accessible to persons who might be fans but who don't know where to go and watch and cheer," she said.</p><p>That's something Jennifer Shahade, a chess professional who streams on Twitch, can identify with. "Chess works well on Twitch because there's no hidden information, so you can play it in real-time or with a very short delay," she said. </p><p>The streams also give viewers the opportunity to learn in a way that they wouldn't elsewhere. "Chess at a high level is played on instinct as much as intense calculations, so it's possible for titled players and champions to educate and entertain while the level of player doesn't degrade as much as one may expect," she said. </p><p>Narrating decisions made over the course of several minutes, rather than a quick-reaction button press as is commonplace in video game streaming, is possible in a way that it isn't for gamers. That helps foster a sense of community.</p><p>It's also glammed up the game and made it more accessible. Taking elements of the frenetic presentation of video game streamers that are commonplace on Twitch has made chess seem less boring. "It packs a certain level of energy that watching a long, slow chess game between two grandmasters doesn't offer," Cusack said.</p><h2><strong>What makes chess work so well online</strong></h2><p>Cusack believes the pandemic has benefitted chess because "everyone has more time." Professionals like Shahade and Alexandra Boatez, who also stream on Twitch, hosted a tournament for women that gave ordinary people the chance to play against grandmasters. Cusack took part.</p><p>"While competing, I didn't have time to worry about the pandemic," she said. "It's been a huge escape and release for me."</p><p>That's also why Kevin Allocca, head of <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> and trends at YouTube, believes the game has done so well on the world's biggest video sharing platform. "Chess works surprisingly well on YouTube because both creator and viewer can be active participants as events unfold, learning, discussing, and, in some cases, playing along simultaneously," he explains. </p><p>"And the variety or skill levels catered to means the experience can be somewhat personalized to the viewer's proficiency. That this serves as something of an antidote to the isolation of lockdown has attracted new fans to this already vibrant community."</p><p>That's what Shahade also thinks is behind the amazing surge in chess watching online. "Chess is a great game for our moment, as it's a way to keep our minds occupied and challenged during these very strange and often devastating times," she said. "Chess allows us to connect through so many ages and cultures. No one should be left out and it's wonderful to see so many new aficionados, as they can learn so much about art and history through the ancient game."</p>

Hence it’s no surprise that <keyword id="182966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bridal-jewellery" source="Orion">bridal jewellery</keyword> accounts for half of all the jewellery sold in India, according to a World Gold Council report. Also, India is the second largest jewellery market in the world<br /><br />Jewellery for brides is chunkier and most pieces constitute 30-250 gm weightage, unlike the next two categories – daily wear which has lightweight pieces in the 5-30 gm range and account to 35-40% of the total sales. <br /><br />Fashion jewellery, where pieces are even lighter at 5-20 gm of gold, have a 5-10% share. <br /><br /><strong>Gold vs destination weddings<br /></strong><br />“Bridal jewellery remains the dominant segment (50-55% market share by weight), despite rising domestic gold prices over the last decade and stiff competition from other luxury purchases, such as destination weddings and foreign holidays,” the report said. <br /><br />The love for gold has sustained the price rise too. The Rupee gold price has almost doubled since 2012. Even as this change made manufactures gradually shift towards lighter weight pieces, bridal jewellery has been relatively price inelastic, losing only around 5-10% market share in that time, as per field research quoted in the report. <br /><br />Going forward, it expects the demand from brides to remain robust. India is a young country with more than half the population below the age of 25 (and 65% under 35). Although there are no official figures for the number of weddings in India, an estimate is between 11-13 million per year, as per the council. <br /><br />“As the average age of marriage for women in India is 22, the number of weddings per annum looks set to remain strong. The bridal segment primarily includes 22-carat jewellery and is dominated by traditional pieces like necklaces or <em>chokers</em>, <em>haars </em>(long chains), jewellery sets, apart from <em>maang teekas </em>and more.<br /><br />Daily wear jewellery like <em>mangalsutras</em>, earrings, chains etc. cover all the three segments of 22, 18 and 14-carat gold. However, 22-carat remains dominant with more than 80% of the market, and 18 and 14 carat combined account for a 15-17% share, with both having increased over the last decade. <br /><br />“The growth in lower caratages has been driven by three factors — the growing popularity of modern designs, the increase in rupee gold prices, and the growth of studded diamond jewellery,” says the World Gold Council. <br /><br />Studded diamond jewellery is predominantly sold in lower caratages like 14 and 18 because it is purchased for adornment rather than investment. Also, it is easier to make thinner and more delicate designs in harder alloys (with low carat gold), which again works better when the designer wants to set stones.<br /><br /><strong>Online &amp; export sales <br /></strong><br />Indian <keyword id="6379337" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-jewellery" source="Orion">gold jewellery</keyword> also has a wide export market especially in countries where a lot of Indians reside. Over the last decade, nearly 90% of India’s jewellery exports have flowed to just five major markets, namely – the UAE, US, Hong Kong, Singapore and UK. While India does export to 146 countries, most of them are extremely small customers including Australia and Canada where a lot of Indian diaspora reside. <br /><br />“Trade bodies also need to help focus a spotlight on Indian craftsmanship, as a large part of Indian jewellery is hand-made – a skill that is appreciated globally,” the report says. <br /><br />Domestically, Indian jewellers are also exploring online and e-commerce options to drive sales. While it currently makes up for only 5-10% of jewellery sold, there is scope for growth, the council believes. <br /><br />“About a decade ago very few jewellery retailers focused on online sales, but today every large and mid-sized retailer has an online platform. In place of ball gowns and a mermaid tail, Hampton instead wore items like a plaid miniskirt and graphic crop top to show how princesses might dress if they starred in movies from the 90s and early 2000s.</p><p>Her video quickly became a TikTok sensation, and has so far garnered more than 1.4 million views.</p> <h2>Speaking to Insider, fashion enthusiast Janice Hampton said she grew up loving Disney princesses and classic teen films</h2><p>"One day, it came to me that combining the two would be the best of both worlds," Hampton said of her video idea, which pairs Belle with "Clueless," Aurora with "Mean Girls," Ariel with "Freaky Friday," Mulan with "She's the Man," and Cinderella with "A Cinderella Story."</p><p>She quickly figured out which movies she'd include in her TikTok, and what outfit each princess would wear — she even purchased a few extra pieces of clothing to help bring her ideas to life.</p><p>Hampton then filmed her TikTok video over the course of a few hours, as she wanted to ensure that her lighting was good, her moves were "just right," and that she used "the perfect song," among other factors. </p><p><div type="image" title="janice glimmer" height="1636" width="914" msid="76878335" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>While Hampton says it's tough to pick a favorite outfit, she really loves the looks she created for Belle as a 'Clueless' character and Ariel as a 'Freaky Friday' star</h2><p>According to Hampton, she sees her Belle-inspired outfit as "the perfect blend of styles, colors, and aesthetics." Still, she said that not all viewers agree that Belle is a good match for "Clueless," to which Hampton disagrees.</p><p>"I think the movie fits her personality because, like Cher, Belle is focused, serious, has a single father, is wanted by a guy she doesn't like, and falls for a guy that she doesn't realize she's in love with until it's almost too late," Hampton said."Also, Belle's ball gown in 'Beauty and the Beast' is yellow, which links to the iconic, yellow plaid outfit Cher wears in 'Clueless.'"</p><p>"I decided to layer my own yellow, checkered dress over a white blouse in my video to pay homage to the way Belle wears a white blouse under her blue village dress," she continued. "And of course I had the half-up, half-down hairstyle for Belle, and then combined the white knee-high socks to be reminiscent of classic '90s fashion."</p><p><div type="image" title="belle clueless" height="1186" width="1210" msid="76878337" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Hampton is also a big fan of her "Freaky Friday" spin on Ariel.</p><p>"I wanted 'Freaky Friday' for Ariel because in both movies, the heroine is a rebellious teenager, has issues with her parents, wants to be with a guy that her parents don't approve of, is involved in music, and has a hard time expressing herself while also being in a totally different body — and, of course, Ariel and Lindsay Lohan are both redheads," Hampton said.</p><p>She added: "I wanted to stay true to Ariel's iconic purple seashell bra and green tail, but I knew I had to do a punk-rock look, so I <keyword id="7" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="style">style</keyword>d a cropped lavender Led Zeppelin T-shirt with some army-green khaki culottes, and of course a black choker that's similar to the one Lindsay wears in the movie. This look is so unlike my personal style, so it was fun for me to dress outside of my comfort zone."</p><p><div type="image" title="ariel freaky friday" height="1196" width="1218" msid="76878339" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>Hampton has created a follow-up video to her Disney-inspired clip, and is considering making a third</h2><p>In her second video, Hampton shows what Rapunzel, Jasmine, Tiana, Elsa and Anna, and Snow White might wear in "Legally Blonde," "The Cheetah Girls," "10 Things I Hate About You," "John Tucker Must Die," and "13 Going on 30" respectively.</p> <p>Hampton told Insider that she's in awe of the reaction her two videos have received, and that she's happy she was "able to connect with others through something that started out as just a little thought bubble" in her head. Still, she maintained that "tallying up views" can become "overwhelming," and that she feels it's important to "stay humble" and create videos that are "true to you and what you love."</p><p>It's partially the reason why she posts other fashion-related videos on her TikTok page, some of which she creates with the help of her mom.</p> <p>"I love finding ways to express myself in fun and artistic ways, and I enjoy how short, sweet, and to-the-point TikTok videos can be," Hampton said. "You can really pack a punch in a blink of an eye. I especially love making videos with my mom because she is my best friend and I want to include her in what I'm doing."</p><p>"The response to our videos together has been amazing, and I can't wait to make more with her!" she continued. "It's great to film with someone else, especially someone who supports you and has similar interests, because you can bounce ideas off of each other and find out what works and what doesn't.
