The <keyword id="6355014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court" source="Orion">Delhi High Court</keyword> on Thursday granted bail to <keyword id="13154993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chitra-Ramkrishna" source="Orion">Chitra Ramkrishna</keyword> in the <keyword id="500410" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="money-laundering-case" source="Orion">money laundering case</keyword> related to alleged <keyword id="16434436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illegal-phone-tapping-and-snooping" source="Orion">illegal phone tapping and snooping</keyword> of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) employees. "The application is allowed. The applicant is granted bail," said Justice Jasmeet Singh. The former NSE managing director, who was earlier arrested by the CBI in the alleged NSE co-location scam, was arrested in the present case by the Enforcement Directorate on July 14 last year. She was granted bail in the CBI case by the high court in September last year. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed her bail plea in the present case on grounds that she was the "mastermind" behind the conspiracy. The phone tapping case, according to the ED, pertains to a period from 2009 to 2017 when former NSE CEO Ravi Narain, Ramkrishna, Executive Vice-President Ravi Varanasi, and Head (Premises) Mahesh Haldipur and others conspired to cheat NSE and its employees and for the purpose, engaged iSEC Services Pvt Ltd for illegal interception of phone calls of employees of the NSE in the guise of doing periodic study of cyber vulnerabilities of the NSE. Seeking bail, Ramkrishna had argued that no scheduled offence was made out against her and the allegations also did not fall within the rigours of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act . Ramkrishna was appointed as Joint MD NSE in 2009 and remained in the position till March 31, 2013. She got elevated as MD and CEO on April 1, 2013. Her tenure at NSE ended in December 2016. Delhi HC grants bail to Chitra Ramkrishna in money laundering case

A special court on Monday extended by four days the remand of <keyword id="13154993" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chitra-ramkrishna" source="Orion">Chitra Ramkrishna</keyword>, former CEO and <keyword id="14487388" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="md-of-national-stock-exchange" source="Orion">MD of National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE) in connection with the prevention of money laundering case related to the phone tapping of NSE's employees between 2009 and 2017. She was produced before Rouse Avenue Court by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the expiry of her custodial remand. The probe agency argued before the court that they wanted to confront her with others and hence needed more time. After hearing the argument of both the sides, the court extended her custodial remand by four days. "Money was laundered in phone tapping. The payments made in the phone tapping is alleged proceeds of crime. There are shell companies. We want to know who was handling the entire operation," said a source. The ED's case is on the basis of the <keyword id="6354572" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cbi" source="Orion">CBI</keyword>'s FIR. This case was lodged by the federal probe agency at the directions of <keyword id="94449" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-ministry-of-home-affairs" source="Orion">Union Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword> (MHA). Earlier, the CBI had recorded the statement of former Mumai police commissioner <keyword id="157301" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-pandey" source="Orion">Sanjay Pandey</keyword> in this connection. Statement of Pandey was recorded at CBI's Mumbai based headquarters. After the questioning, he was let go. The <keyword id="6354889" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-bureau-of-investigation" source="Orion">Central Bureau of Investigation</keyword> (CBI) had also conducted raids in Mumbai, Pune and in several other parts of the country in this connection. "Pandey ran iSec Securities Pvt. Ltd. It has been alleged that Ramkrishna used this firm to tap the phone of NSE's employees. The phone calls made by NSE employees between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. were tapped and recorded by <keyword id="14487387" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isec-securities-pvt-ltd-" source="Orion">iSec Securities Pvt Ltd.</keyword> It has been alleged that Pandey helped in tapping the phone calls illegally," the source had said. Chitra Ramkrishna's custodial remand extended by four days by a special court

In a major development in the <keyword id="53581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-stock-exchange" source="Orion">National Stock Exchange</keyword> (NSE) fraud case, the <keyword id="6354889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-bureau-of-investigation" source="Orion">Central Bureau of Investigation</keyword> (CBI) on Sunday night arrested its ex MD and CEO <keyword id="13154993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chitra-ramkrishna" source="Orion">Chitra Ramkrishna</keyword>. Arrested from her Delhi residence, <keyword id="246019" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ramkrishna" source="Orion">Ramkrishna</keyword> will be produced before the Rouse Avenue Court on Monday, and the agency will seek her custody for questioning. Earlier, ex-Group Operating Officer Anand Subramanian was arrested on the night of February 24 after several rounds of questioning. He was later sent to CBI custody till March 6. The CBI is trying to corroborate the evidences collected by them with the questioning of Subramanian. The agency is probing the matter since May 2018 but they haven't found any concrete evidence to identify the mysterious Himalayan "yogi" with whom classified information was shared by Ramkrishna. The <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> had recently imposed a fine of Rs 3 crore on her, following the market regulator finding that she allegedly shared vital inputs about the NSE with the "yogi" between 2014 and 2016. "Information regarding organisational structure, dividend scenario, financial results, human resource policies and related issues, response to regulator, etc., were shared by her with the yogi," an official said. On April 1, 2013, Ramkrishna became the CEO and MD of NSE. She brought in Subramanian as her advisor the same year. Subramanian was made the Chief Strategic Advisor of NSE. He served at this post between 2013 and 2015 before being made Group Operations Officer and Advisor to the MD between 2015 and 2016, despite having no exposure to the capital market. Previously working as a mid-level manager in Balmer and Lawrie, he had seen his annual salary increase from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 1.68 crore, and then to Rs 4.21 crore. Subramanian quit the NSE in October 2016 and Ramakrishna in December 2016. NSE co-location case: CBI arrests NSE former CEO Chitra Ramkrishna

The <keyword id="6354572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CBI" source="Orion">CBI</keyword> on Friday questioned former CEO of National Stock Exchange <keyword id="13154993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chitra-Ramkrishna" source="Orion">Chitra Ramkrishna</keyword> in the view of fresh facts emerging in connection with its ongoing probe into alleged abuse of co-location facility in the <keyword id="6354646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nse" source="Orion">NSE</keyword>, officials said. The CBI has also issued look out circulars against <keyword id="246019" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramkrishna" source="Orion">Ramkrishna</keyword>, another former CEO Ravi Narain and former Group Operating Officer Anand Subramanian to prevent them from leaving the country. The central probe agency had booked owner and promoter of Delhi-based <keyword id="13202825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OPG-Securities-Pvt-Ltd" source="Orion">OPG Securities Pvt. Ltd</keyword>. Sanjay Gupta and others in connection with alleged abuse of NSE co-location facility to make gains by getting early access to the stock market, they said. The agency was also probing unidentified officials of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), Mumbai and other unidentified persons. "It was alleged that the owner and promoter of said private company abused the server architecture of NSE in conspiracy with unknown officials of NSE. It was also alleged that unknown officials of NSE, Mumbai had provided unfair access to the said company using the co-location facility during the period 2010-2012 that enabled it to login first to the exchange server of Stock Exchange that helped to get the data before any other broker in the market," the CBI has alleged in the FIR. In the high-frequency algorithmic trading in the NSE, an edge of a few seconds to a stock broker in a trade can make a huge difference, the officials said. It has emerged that Gupta was the first to log in in 90 per cent of cases which prompted murmurs in the stock broker circuit, and resulted in a load balancer being introduced by the NSE, the officials said. Gupta once again managed the data centre staff of NSE to get connected to the backup servers which were with zero load and provided far better and faster access of market feed to OPG Securities in comparison to other brokers, the CBI has alleged. The probe agency has alleged that he had managed to manipulate SEBI inquiry against the role of OPG Securities in the misuse of TBT (tick-by-tick) architecture of servers by paying bribe to the officials of the stock market regulator. Ramkrishna was MD and CEO of NSE from April 2013 to December 2016, Narain was the MD and CEO of the exchange from April 1994 till March 2013. Thereafter, he was appointed as vice-chairman in the non-executive category on the NSE's board from April 2013 and remained so till June 2017. Ramkrishna hit the headlines after a SEBI order on February 11 said that she was steered by a yogi, dwelling in the Himalayan ranges, in the appointment of Anand Subramanian as the exchange's group operating officer and advisor to the managing director (MD). The Securities and Exchange Board of India charged Ramkrishna and others with alleged governance lapses in the appointment of Subramanian as the chief strategic advisor and his re-designation as group operating officer and advisor to MD. SEBI levied a fine of Rs 3 crore on Ramkrishna, Rs 2 crore each on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Subramanian, former NSE MD and CEO Ravi Narain, and Rs 6 lakh on V R Narasimhan, who was the chief regulatory officer and compliance officer. YouTube pulled down the livestream in the middle of the launch event, allegedly for violating its terms of service. "This account has been terminated for violating YouTube's terms of service," the notification read. The smartphone maker was yet to react to the development. Oppo India's YouTube channel suspended mid-launch, for violation of service terms

The Indian government this week banned 54 Chinese mobile applications, which are posing threat to national security. The Income Tax department on Wednesday also carried out raids at multiple premises linked to Chinese tech conglomerate Huawei across the country in connection with alleged tax evasion. The Global Times said in an editorial that after failing to gain any advantage by stirring up tension at the border with China, which drew stern responses from Chinese soldiers, "New Delhi has shifted its out-of-control jingoism toward a more vulnerable target - Chinese businesses operating in India". "Over the past several months, Indian authorities have banned dozens of Chinese mobile apps and raided local branches of many Chinese firms in shady 'tax investigations'," the editorial said late on Thursday. Chinese telecom giant <keyword id="110306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei-technologies" source="Orion">Huawei Technologies</keyword> confirmed earlier media reports that Indian tax authorities raided multiple offices of the firm and questioned its local employees. In a statement, Huawei said that it was confident that its operations in the South Asian country "are firmly compliant with all laws and regulations" and that it would "fully cooperate" with Indian authorities. "Huawei's response is standard for any business caught in such circumstances; however, let's be clear, Indian authorities' raid most likely has nothing to do with the Chinese firm's compliance issues, but has a great deal to do with the increasing hostility of officials in New Delhi toward China," read the editorial. Before Huawei, several Chinese companies, including smartphone maker <keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword>, have already been targeted. In January, Xiaomi was ordered to pay 6.53 billion rupees ($87.8 million) for unpaid taxes alleged by the Indian authorities, claimed the editorial. Last month, multiple tax raids were carried out at the premises of Chinese smartphone makers in the country. The Finance Ministry issued a statement, saying that Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi's local company in India had engaged in "tax evasion" and demanded that it pay a total of Rs 6.53 billion ($88 million) in taxes owed between April 2017 and June 2020. Xiaomi denied the claim, saying that the company adheres to legal and compliant operations around the world and abides with the relevant laws and regulations of each jurisdiction in which it operates. Chinese mobile phone brands are highly popular in the Indian market, and their market share far exceeds that of local Indian brands. According to the editorial, Chinese officials have expressed concern over Indian authorities' actions against Chinese businesses and have repeatedly called on the Indian side to treat Chinese firms fairly. Commenting on India's latest raid of Huawei offices and bans on Chinese apps, a spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry on Thursday mounted a noticeably stronger response, calling the actions "a series of crackdown measures" that have seriously harmed the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese firms. "For that, China expresses serious concern," the spokesperson said. "However, though New Delhi appears to be constantly testing China's patience, Chinese officials have and will likely continue to avoid being dragged into tit-for-tat measures with India," read the editorial. "With this, we believe China will take necessary measures to protect Chinese interests overseas wherever they face discriminatory actions."
