<keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> on Friday operationalised its first fully electrified bullet train in the remote Himalayan region of <keyword id="6364076" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tibet">Tibet</keyword>, connecting the provincial capital Lhasa and Nyingchi, a strategically located Tibetan border town close to Arunachal Pradesh. The 435.5-km Lhasa-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has been inaugurated ahead of the centenary celebrations of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1. The first electrified railway in Tibet Autonomous Region opened Friday morning, linking Lhasa with Nyingchi as "Fuxing" bullet trains enter official operation on the plateau region, state-run <keyword id="106387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xinhua-news-agency">Xinhua news agency</keyword> reported. It has a designed speed of 160 km per hour and operates on a single-line electrified railway. It stops at nine stations, including Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi and can handle passenger and freight transportation, the report said. Compared to roads, the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway reduces the travel time from Lhasa to Nyingchi from 5 hours to approximately 3.5 hours, and cuts the travel time from Shannan to Nyingchi from 6 hours to approximately 2 hours, it said. The rail line passes through 47 tunnels and 121 bridges and crosses the Brahmaputra river locally called Yarlung Zangbo 16 times. Tunnels and bridges account for approximately 75 per cent of the total length of the railway track. Also, it has an annual freight transport capacity of 10 million tonnes which provides strong support for the flow of goods, will promote economic development and improve people's lives, the report said. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will go through the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the world's most geologically active areas. In November, Chinese President <keyword id="191809" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xi-Jinping">Xi Jinping</keyword> had instructed officials to expedite construction of the new railway project, connecting Sichuan Province and Nyingchi in Tibet, saying the new rail line would play a key role in safeguarding the border stability. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway starts from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, and travels through Ya'an and enters Tibet via Qamdo, shortening the journey from Chengdu to Lhasa from 48 hours to 13 hours. Nyingchi is the prefecture-level city of Medog which is adjacent to the Arunachal Pradesh border. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet, which is firmly rejected by <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the official daily <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword> earlier that "If a scenario of a crisis happens at the China-India border, the railway will provide a great convenience for China's delivery of strategic materials. China launches first fully-electrified bullet train near Himalayan region of Tibet

Neighboring country China, which has already planned to expand its road and rail network with Rasuwagadhi area in Nepal through Tibet, is now looking to further stretch its railway link to Bihar so that it can improve its connectivity with India and South Asia. 
 
China's railroad with Nepal will get completed by 2020, said an article in the state-run Global Times. This would also allow China to connect to India, given that the distance from Rasuwagadhi to Bihar-bordering Birgunj is only 240 km. 
 
When connected, Bihar would not need to trade with China through Kolkata, thus saving time, cost and distance. 
 
"The railroad connection to China not only is important for Nepal and Nepalese people's future development, but also has the capacity to build connectivity with the whole of South Asia. The government of Nepal has the chance to make history," the article said.

A rail route connecting China to Bihar could be possible in the coming years

China’s new plans for a rail and road network The conflict between India and China is no longer about who fired the first shot but who will come out on top when this all ends. Over the weekend, China Railway announced the bidding results for constructing two tunnels, one bridge, and a power supply project to put the railway line together. The project will stretch across 1,0111 kilometers and cost around $47.8 billion. The race to build roads to the border Border infrastructure is key to any country’s national security. It is, in fact, the match that lit the fire between India and China. Experts claim that India caught China by surprise when it began developing the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat-Beg-Oldi (DSDBO) Road. It’s an all-weather road in Eastern Ladakh — where the India-China conflict is currently playing out. Xi and Modi to come face-to-face thrice this month even as China embarks on its rail-and-road border project

State-owned media is pitching China's latest hypersonic missiles and laser weapons to the global arms market

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is considering extending a rail line from the Tibetan capitol of Lhasa to Kathmandu in Nepal, and tunneling under Mount Everest to do so, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/mounteverest/11524428/China-Nepal-railway-with-tunnel-under-Mount-Everest-being-considered.html">The Telegraph reports</a>. The project would involve tacking on about 400 miles of rail to an already 1,200 mile track which takes 25 hours to traverse as it is. The move would provide easy transport in one of the trickiest terrains in the world, and increase China's influence in the region.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Historically, the mountain range that holds eight of the world's fourteen peaks that top 8,000 meters in altitude has served as a practical and cultural barrier. China is planning to build a railway under Mount Everest

If all goes well, you can soon board a train to China. China has proposed a trilateral economic corridor with India, in the name of rebuilding earthquake hit Nepal. This railway shall pass through Nepal and Tibet. <o:p></o:p>

	Huang Xilian, Deputy Director General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry has told the PTI, the India-Nepal-China Corridor is a major initiative to promote the connectivity in the region especially between China and India and help quake-ravaged Nepal.<o:p></o:p>

	Huang told Indian correspondents that the proposal has been mooted by China during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit here in May.<o:p></o:p>

	The proposal was discussed in the recent meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of an international conference on Nepal reconstruction in Kathmandu last month.<o:p></o:p>

	"The two Ministers had further discussion on this topic and reached consensus. We need to work together for the process of reconstruction of Nepal and we need to setup a joint study group to explore the feasibility of the Corridor," Huang, the Foreign Ministry's point man for India told the PTI correspondent. <o:p></o:p>

	"We are ready to set up study group for economic corridor. If we can reach an agreement on feasibility we are ready to push forward it as it will bring benefit to the three countries," he said.<o:p></o:p>

	He also spoke about China's interest to build railway line through the Himalayan passes of Tibet connecting Nepal and India. "The construction of this railway will help to materialise a dream. We need to have a feasibility study on it. We need to have consultations among the three. If India shows some interest we can respond positively," he said.<o:p></o:p>

	China also dropped the much publicised plan to construct a high speed rail link through Mt. Everest, which Huang dismissed as imagination of a retired railway official.<o:p></o:p>

	Asked about the media reports about plans to build 540-km long high speed railway cutting through Mt Everest, Huang said an official who quoted in this regard is full of imagination.<o:p></o:p>

	In April this year, Wang Mengshu, a rail expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, spoke about this proposal to state-run China Daily.<o:p></o:p>

	Huang said China is in discussions with India about the projects for reconstruction of Nepal to rebuild it after the devastating quake which flattened many parts of the country.
