The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. "Out of over 1.5 crore trade annually, we have paid lakhs of rupees towards customs duty and other taxes to the government of India," said Rongkali. China announced in the year 2022 that it will build trans Himalayan multi-dimensional connectivity with Nepal to restructure the road and communication network with that country, Rongkali said. "As China has not given permission to open our passes along the Indo-China border, we have an apprehension that the mart made for Indian traders in Gakkhu town of Taklakot could be handed over to Nepalese traders," said Rongkali.

Indian traders demand resumption of border trade with China through Lipulekh pass

Nepal's policymakers are undergoing 13 days' offline and online training for the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) in Beijing after China "especially invited" them to attend it, sources said. China has reserved several seats for policymakers of the mega Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project at its Science Academy in Beijing. The programme started on September 4 and will end on September 20, sources said. "China has invited policymakers of Nepal to attend the training programme so that they can understand how these GPS and its application works in the field of education, research, science and other fields," they said. The move of China is seen as a counter to the US-based Global Positioning System (GPS) hegemony and push for its own indigenously developed navigation system in the region. China uses its homegrown navigation system BeiDou for both military and civilian purposes. BDS, stated to be rivalling GPS, is the fourth global satellite navigation system in the world. Other systems are Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo. India too is developing its own navigational system called the <keyword id="1493841" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Regional-Navigation-Satellite-System">Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System</keyword> (<keyword id="1596484" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRNSS">IRNSS</keyword>), with an operational name of NAVIC. Sources said that BDS' implementation will not only reduce the dependence of Chinese aircraft, vehicles and anti-missile systems on GPS and GLONASS, but it will enhance the People's Liberation Army's capabilities in conducting overseas operations. BeiDou started providing independent navigation services over China in 2000 and will serve many countries part of BRI. Currently, BeiDou covers nearly 30 countries including Pakistan, Egypt and Indonesia. China's BRI is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects launched in 2013 by President Xi Jinping. It is aimed at furthering China's influence abroad with infrastructure projects funded by Chinese investments all over the world. The initiative also led to allegations of smaller countries reeling under mounting Chinese debt after Sri Lanka handed over its strategic Hambantota port in a debt swap to China in 2017 on a 99-year lease. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China has inked 198 cooperation documents with 167 countries and international organisations under the BRI. China sees its trade expansion with the BRI countries as a way out to sustain its exports amid declining trend in the US and European Union, its top export destinations till now. China is setting up a 'line of separation' on top of Mount Everest to isolate climbers going up the Tibetan side from a COVID-19 outbreak on the Nepalese side

After India, China is now embroiled in a fresh boundary dispute with Nepal in its remote Humla district that is close to the Nepal-Tibet border. The dispute emerged after the Chinese side unilaterally constructed 11 cemented buildings in the Nepali territory and people in the Lapcha area where the buildings were constructed, brought it to the notice of the Humla administration. The area that Nepal is claiming, is remote from the district headquarters, difficult to reach, barren, unused and a treacherous one but the Chinese side can easily cross the border due to the close proximity and road access. After the Lapcha people brought the matter to the administration's notice that nine building have already been erected by the Chinese, who have also asked Nepalese to refrain from visiting across the bordering area, the Home Ministry of Nepal sent senior officials to the disputed site this week to ascertain the volume of the land encroached upon by the Chinese. Though the officials have yet to submit their report to the Home Ministry but Bishnu Bahadur Lama, Chairman of the Namkha Rural Municipality who was the first to bring the matter to the administration's notice, said that they inspected the disputed area, interacted with locals and held brief communication with Chinese security officials. "They (Chinese) told us that due to Covid pandemic, it was not possible to sit in a face to face talks urging that those 11 buildings were constructed inside Chinese territory and asked us to leave the place. Then we left. It is happening largely due to one missing pillar," Lama said. According to Lama and other Nepali officials, during the road construction in that area some eight years ago, a boundary pillar no 11 was damaged and had not been erected since. After we failed to ascertain the pillar no 11, the Chinese built the buildings whose purpose is not known, Lama said, now Chinese have barred Nepalese of that area from visiting the Lapcha area. But as per locals, that particular territory belongs to us which has been used by the Nepalese for several purposes in the past, Lama said, it was basically used for grazing by both sides. The Ministries of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs of Nepal in Kathmandu are waiting the ground report from Humla before taking up the matter with the Chinese side. After the Nepal media started reporting about the alleged Chinese encroachment, <keyword id="9986157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-chinese-embassy-in-kathmandu">the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu</keyword> on Tuesday issued a statement and clarified its position. China and Nepal are friendly neighbours, the statement said, China has always respected Nepal's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "The buildings mentioned by the media have been verified to be on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border. The Nepali side may make verification again. China and Nepal have no territorial disputes. The two sides have always maintained close communication on border affairs," the statement further reads. There are news coming from Humla that China has encroached the Nepali territory and erected some buildings, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa said: "I request the government to release the facts and truths regarding the land encroachment. Thapa has also requested with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to send back the Chinese from the Nepali territory immediately." Nepal and China do not have major boundary dispute except for their differences over the height of Mt. Everest. Since China came up with rock height of Mt Everest as 8,844 metre in 2005 and recognised it, Nepal declined to accept it. The accepted height of Mt Everest is 8,848 metre. Both Nepal and China are separately measuring the height of Mt Everest and the findings are yet to be announced. The 40 or so expeditions that take on Everest during the spring climbing season can bring in over $4 million in permit fees alone, as well as provide employment to thousands of local people who work in hospitality.Sharmila Lama, a trekking and mountain guide, should have summited the Annapurna massif in April and earned around $8,000 across the lucrative climbing season, which runs from early April to the end of May."And then, just when the season started, the lockdown started," she said. "Not only my personal life, but all the workers involved in the tourism sector. There is a huge impact on us." She is now living back in the capital Kathmandu with her son and sisters, waiting for the lockdown to pass, in hope of returning to the mountains before her savings run dry."The rental bills keep adding up here in the city," she said. "I have to pay the rent, and it is difficult to manage food for the time being. Also, our pockets are emptying day by day." There have been almost 6,600 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 19 deaths in Nepal, <a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html">according to Johns Hopkins University data</a>. The lockdown is the last thing the country needed.Climbing on Everest was effectively called off following an <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2014/apr/22/nepal-everest-talks-sherpa-strike-avalanche">avalanche in 2014</a> that killed 16 guides. One year later, an <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32479909">earthquake that killed around 9,000 people</a> nationwide again triggered deadly avalanches on the mountain. Tourism officials had dubbed this year "<a href="https://visitnepal2020.com/">Visit Nepal Year 2020</a>" — a marketing push aimed at delivering higher visitor numbers and welcoming people back to the country after the earthquake. Many hotels took out loans to spruce up their properties and entice tourists. There are no guests in the hotel. We normally have full occupancy at this time. He broke his own record for reaching the summit of the world‘s highest mountain, maximum number of times. Kami Rita Sherpa is a native of Thame village of Solukhumbu district. He reached the summit at a height of 29,035 feet, at 7.50 am through the Southeast Ridge route. He was accompanied by another sherpa. He started his summit from Camp IV on Tuesday night and reached the summit point on Wednesday morning, said a basement official. The first climbers to reach the summit in 1953— Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay also took the same route. According to the tourism department official Mira Acharya, 30 other climbers were supposed to scale the peak by Wednesday and Thursday, as the weather window opens. "The climbers have now been descending to the lower camps safely," Mingma Sherpa told The Himalayan Times. The Journey so far Kami Rita Sherpa wishes to climb the peak two more times, reported Reuters. On May 16, 2018, Kami Rita had made history by scaling Mount Everest, 22 times. He already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 metres including K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna. He made his first ascent of the giant peak in 1994 when he was 24 years old. In 2016, he climbed the mountain from China. "I have a goal to climb Everest for 25th time - or maybe more than that," he told Efe news in April before leaving for his expedition. The 2019 Everest climbing season officially kicked off on Tuesday with eight Nepalis climbing guides making it to the peak. These highly-skilled mountaineers prepare the route to the top of the 8,848m mountain for other climbers. Nepali authorities have also previously detained Tibetans trying to cross the border on their way to India after fleeing their disputed homeland. Human rights groups say Nepal faces intense Chinese pressure to control the flow of Tibetans crossing the border.
