Unfortunately, few of them are aware of these threats and the way to handle them. Of late, the Indian government is waking up to the importance of sex education. The numbers of cases of child<a href="https://www.ibtimes.co.in/5-minor-boys-plan-gang-rape-8-year-old-girl-uttarakhand-after-watching-porn-775171"> rape went up</a> by 82% to 19,765 in 2016 from the year before, as per National Crime Bureau data. Smriti Irani, the Minister of Women and Child Development said that schools will soon educate the country’s 430 million children of the ills surrounding them. “All the schools under CBSE and state board will initiate interventions on ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’,” Irani told the Lok Sabha. Not just about sex but sensitization Experts feel that <keyword id="2466119" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sex-education-in-India">sex education in India</keyword> needs a rapid upgrade. Currently, Indian sex education is relegated to a single lesson in 10th standard where reproduction is explained without details on the act of sex. However, topics like unsafe sex, sexually transmitted diseases and contraceptives are introduced. “We don’t have age appropriate sex education for young people, where children can learn about their bodies and how to protect their bodies. They should learn this in schools,” Kailash Satyarthi, who won a Nobel prize in 2014 for helping eradicate child labour, told Business Insider India. Harish Iyer, a Mumbai-based activist and a child abuse survivor whose testimony was read out in the Lok Sabha, believes that sex education should go beyond bad touch and safe sex. “We should call it sensitivity education where children should be taught about sexuality and sensitize them. We should address probable offenders as well as possible victims,” Iyer told Business Insider India. Start with the parents Child activists are also concerned about the ease at which child and other forms of porn are available online. Satyarthi wants Indian homes to recognize the ill-effects of such exposure. However, few Indian parents have a heart-to-heart chat with their children, and topics like sex are left out of dinner conversations. He believes that parents should be taught about the importance of sex education first. “This is still a social taboo. Parents and teachers don’t talk to their children on these issues. Youngsters in villages are not exposed to new age consequences. It is easy for a predator to click the picture of an unsuspecting child, modifying it and then blackmail them,” Satyarthi says. In India, young girls receive some form of sex education from aunts, mothers and grandmothers while boys are left out of the equation. There’s also twist to home-grown sex education — the advice to not have sex at all. “Sex education should not be about abstinence only. It should include safe sex practices, and parents should educate children about the right age to try sex as well,” says Iyer.

An alarming rise in the demand for <keyword id="24545" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Child-pornography">child pornography</keyword> material (also referred to as 'Child Sexual Abuse Material') has been seen ever since the Covid-19 induced lockdown was enforced, the <keyword id="9047685" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-child-protection">India Child Protection</keyword> Fund (<keyword id="5125330" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICPF">ICPF</keyword>) claimed on Monday. According to the ICPF, the online data monitoring websites are showing an increase in demand for searches like '<keyword id="73039" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="child-porn">child porn</keyword>', 'sexy child' and 'teen sex videos'. Data from Pornhub, the world's largest pornography website in the world, also reveals that traffic from India has increased by 95 per cent between 24th and 26th March 2020, as compared to their average traffic, pre-coronavirus, the ICPF claimed. In its report the ICPF said that New Delhi was amongst the cities where there is a "high demand" for child pornographic material, thereby posing grave risks to its children during the Covid induced lockdown. The ICPF has released a report titled 'Child Sexual Abuse Material in India', a research of child pornography demand in 100 cities in India like New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Indore. The overall demand for child pornography was an average of 5 million per month in 100 cities on the public web during December 2019, which has now spiked. The report reveals up to a 200 per cent increase in demand for violent content which shows children "choking", "bleeding" and 'tortured". "Metro cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai, besides many Tier II and capital cities, which are seeing a sharp increase in coronavirus cases, have been red-flagged by the December study as hotspots for child pornography," the ICPF said. "ICPF has warned that this indicates millions of paedophiles, child rapists and child pornography addicts have migrated online, making the Internet extremely unsafe for children. Without stringent action, this could result in a drastic rise in sexual crimes against children," it added. The report cites Europol, United Nations, ECPAT reports which say that children are now more prone to online grooming and sexual coercion, and also refers to recent news of the Childline India Helpline reporting more than 92,000 SOS calls asking for protection from abuse and violence in 11 days of the lockdown. "This presents a chilling reality of the extreme threat faced by India's children during this period of lockdown. Demand for child sexual abuse material indicates children are more vulnerable to sexual predators," ICPF said. The organisation has requested the authorities to further step up online vigil in these cities for potential exploiters. Also the Rajya Sabha Committee on the issue, instituted by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, has recommended stringent laws for Internet service providers like Jio and Airtel, and platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to hold them accountable for child abuse enabled by these companies. The ICPF reiterated the urgent need to implement these recommendations. "This is a blatant violation of the directions of the Honourable Supreme Court, and a violation of national policy. Pornographic websites are playing hide-and-seek with Indian law and judiciary by simply changing their website URLs," Nivedita Ahuja, spokesperson for the ICPF said. "The Government of India must urgently crackdown on child pornography and also initiate a global dialogue for an international convention against child sexual abuse material," she added. Speaking to the throng of media personnel waiting outside her residence, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said that her faith in the judiciary had been vindicated. A visibly relieved Asha Devi said that the hangings of the four convicts would send a strong signal for deterrence. "Our fight for security of daughters across the country will continue" she said. "I returned from the Supreme Court, hugged my daughter's photograph and told her: 'Today, justice has been delivered'." "I dedicate this day -- March 20 to all the women in the country because #Nirbhaya got justice, today," she said. She said: "Proud to be known as Nirbhaya's mother. She fought so hard. And I have waited long to see this day. The flaw in our justice system were exposed. But finally all four were hanged in one go. A first of its kind of justice, which will definitely be a lesson to others." "Will continue this struggle for other daughters in the country," she said and remembered all the unfulfilled dreams of her child, whom she could not save. Nirbhaya's father too expressed satisfaction at the turn of events, which have been escaping from their grasp for -- justice have been slipping through their fingers as the convicts had made every last ditch attempt to escape the gallows. "I'm happy and the entire community is happy, the country is happy toady as justice has been delivered," said the father and expressed his gratitude to all -- media, Nirbhaya's friends, people who have fought long and hard alongside his wife and him, the protesters who took out candle marches. He thanked all for making it happen. Friday morning's hanging of the four convicts brought to an end the seven year quest for justice by the parents of the young girl who was brutally gang raped by six persons in Delhi, in December 2012.
