Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Delhi reports over 300 dengue cases in a week; malaria and chikungunya cases on the rise

In all the noise around COVID-19 — the risks from malaria, dengue and chikungunya are ignored

Hyderabad, Jun 3 () The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) will provide a fund of USD 14.1 million to a consortium, comprising Bharat Biotech and International Vaccine Institute (IVI), for vaccine manufacturing and clinical development of a two-dose live-inactivated vaccine (BBV87) against Chikungunya. CEPI is an innovative partnership between public, private, philanthropic, and civil organisations, launched at Davos in 2017, to develop vaccines to stop future epidemics. This grant is supported by the European Unions (EU) Horizon 2020 programmethrough an existing framework partnership agreement with CEPI, a press release from the city-based vaccine manufacturer said on Wednesday. The consortium will be further supported with a grant of up to USD 2 million from the centre's Ind-CEPI initiative which will fund the set-up of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing facilities for the vaccine in India, and the subsequent manufacture of clinical trial materials, it said. In addition to manufacturing, the partnering agreement will finance a multi-centre Phase 2/3 adaptive clinical trial to be conducted by IVI in Colombia, Panama and Thailand which will provide crucial data about the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate. "The partnership will build on Bharat Biotech's experience of developing and supplying affordable vaccines, and WHO prequalification procedures, to ensure affordable access to the vaccine in countries where Chikungunya is endemic, in line with CEPI's core commitment to equitable access," it said. The investment is part of CEPI's third call for proposals which was launched in January 2019. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. Usually, it takes about 10-15 days for a larva to become an adult mosquito that spreads dengue. The MCD is taking various measures to curb breeding at the source, another official said. According to the report, in areas under the jurisdiction of other agencies like New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Cantt and Railways, around 10 dengue cases were reported as of July 6. The report also shows data on other vector-borne diseases. The number of malaria cases reported until the end of last week stood at 90, while chikungunya cases were logged at 22. The MCD conducted over 1.8 crore house visits to check for domestic mosquito breeding and found breeding in over 43,000 houses, the report said. Rise in dengue cases due to more testing centres in city: MCD

The <keyword id="22667872" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mpox-outbreak" source="keywords">mpox outbreak</keyword> in <keyword id="19924003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="africa" source="keywords">Africa</keyword> is yet another example of how <keyword id="20040661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infectious-diseases" source="keywords">infectious diseases</keyword>, perceived to be "someone else's problem", and affecting mainly poor, developing countries, may suddenly pose unexpected global threats. Other examples of <keyword id="22817243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neglected-diseases" source="keywords">neglected diseases</keyword> include the West Nile, Zika and Chikungunya viruses. Mpox was discovered in 1958 (in captive monkeys, hence the original misnomer "monkeypox") and the first human case was identified in 1970. Then, for decades it was largely neglected by the scientific and public health communities, regarded as an uncommon infection in remote rural areas in tropical Africa, without relevance for the rest of the world. When a massive mpox outbreak hit developed countries in 2022, increased research funding led to a surge in scientific studies. On just one medical search engine, there's been more research produced since April 2022 than in the preceding 60 years. The 2022-23 global mpox outbreak happened despite repeated calls from African researchers for increased global investment in diagnostic, therapeutic and infection prevention tools for mpox. The WHO has now declared the current upsurge of mpox in central Africa a <keyword id="21952478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health-emergency" source="keywords">public health emergency</keyword> of international concern. This is the highest alert level for events that constitute a public health risk to other countries and requires a coordinated international response. Mpox's recent history is yet another reminder that an infectious disease in one corner of the world should not be regarded as someone else's problem, as it can suddenly start to spread fast and far. It also highlights global inequities in resource allocation and access to vaccines, diagnostics and treatments. These were made available in many industrialised countries and helped curb the global outbreak, but are still largely lacking in most of Africa. <h2>The 2022 outbreak: a total surprise</h2>The disease has been renamed "mpox" but the name of the virus, for now, remains "monkeypox" (MPXV). It is closely related to the smallpox virus. MPXV was considered a <keyword id="21311828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zoonotic-disease" source="keywords">zoonotic disease</keyword> endemic in parts of central and west Africa. It was acquired mainly through close contact with wild mammals, especially handling bush meat, but there was no sustained human-to-human transmission. Only very occasionally were cases seen outside the endemic areas, due to infected travellers or import of infected small mammals. This changed abruptly in 2022: a massive, rapidly evolving global outbreak caused over 99,000 laboratory-confirmed cases in 116 countries. At its peak in August 2022, over 6,000 cases were reported each week. This outbreak came as a total surprise: most cases were reported from non-endemic countries, mostly in men who have sex with men, who had become infected during recent sexual encounters. Even though most cases were clinically not particularly severe and the death toll stands at just over 200, the global outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the <keyword id="19896311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="keywords">World Health Organization</keyword> on 23 July, 2022. Fortunately, case numbers soon plummeted due to a combination of behavioural changes and vaccination in at-risk groups. Modern vaccines and antiviral drugs with activity against mpox were made available in many affected high-income countries. These had been developed and stockpiled in the US and Europe, mostly in preparation for a potential bioweapon attack using a poxvirus. The global outbreak in 2022 was caused by clade II of MPXV, which is endemic in west Africa and not as virulent as clade I MPXV, which so far has only been seen in the Congo Basin. That first mpox public health emergency of international concern was declared over in May 2023. Clade II MPXV infections are still occurring globally, but the worst seems over - for now. Complacency would be misguided, as illustrated by the current mpox outbreak that is gathering steam. <h2>Upsurge in Africa</h2>The African region is experiencing an upsurge in mpox cases, which started in 2023. As the continent which includes the areas where mpox has been endemic for a long time, Africa now presents a complex mosaic. The current clade I MPXV (formerly called Congo Basin strain) is more virulent than the clade II (west African) strain, resulting in a higher case fatality rate. The ongoing outbreak has its epicentre in South Kivu province, eastern DRC, and has the potential to fuel a large pandemic. It has a distinct epidemiological pattern with sustained chains of human-to-human transmission, often via the sexual route. It may have increased transmissibility (we don't know yet). The virus which causes it is the newly defined clade Ib lineage. It displays mutations that are the hallmark of human-to-human spread that is estimated to have been happening since September 2023. Case numbers are rising rapidly, even though many suspected cases are likely not tested and thus not counted as confirmed. Complicating matters, a commonly used test was found to miss infections with this lineage of the virus. It affects mostly adults. The case fatality rate is higher than it was in the 2022 global outbreak. Already, this outbreak has resulted in mpox cases occurring in several neighbouring countries, including some (like Kenya), with no previous record of mpox. The challenge is enormous. The eastern DRC is an area beset by multiple problems. This includes natural disasters, violence and infectious diseases including measles, cholera and poliomyelitis for the DRC. In recent years the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever took place in the wider area and, despite the availability of vaccines and treatments, posed considerable challenges. <h2>What needs to happen</h2>Equitable access to diagnostic tests, vaccines and antiviral treatments requires political commitment and financial investments. Scientific investigations are needed to learn more about exposure settings, transmission routes and clinical presentations. It's important to find the best ways to make these interventions. There is no doubt that a disease in one corner of the world can suddenly become a global heath threat. It's time the global health system woke up to this reality.

Mpox outbreak in Africa was neglected - it could now turn into the next global pandemic

Amid a spike in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of COVID-19 and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of COVID-19 which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> positive or not, doctors said. "Covid cases are declining right now, but the virus is still there. I am still seeing Covid cases in my OPD. In the last 3-4 days, two cases were detected in OPD and one later in an ICU. However, on an average, dengue infection is on rise right now," said Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant at <keyword id="56368" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apollo-hospitals" source="Orion">Apollo Hospitals</keyword>. "There are a few overlapping symptoms when it comes to both dengue and Covid, such as fever, bodyache and headache, and in such cases diagnosis cannot be that black and white. So, we are prescribing both Covid and dengue test to ascertain the exact infection. In fact, in some cases, even malaria and typhoid tests are also being done," he said. However, if a patient is suffering more from sore throat and cough and their fever is not very high, then Covid infection is more probable. So, a dengue test is not being prescribed in cases "where we can differentiate from the nature of symptoms," Chatterjee added. Doctors at many government and private hospitals are reporting a rise in footfall in OPDs after a continuous spike in dengue cases in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> in the past two weeks. Most of the patients are complaining of fever, cough, sore throat and body ache or headache or both. Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital - Delhi government's largest hospital and the main COVID-19 facility - is also reporting dengue cases with some of the patients being admitted after their platelets level had fallen beyond the normal range. Dengue fever can result in a drop in white blood cell and platelet counts. The normal platelet count in the body ranges from 1.5 to 4 lacs, which can go down to as low as 20,000 to 40,000 in the case of dengue patients. "Yes, rising dengue cases are making diagnosis difficult now. Earlier, we would analyse symptoms and Covid test would be prescribed if they had fever or other matching symptoms. Now not only patients, but even doctors are confused about the exact ailment due to their overlapping symptoms," a senior doctor at the hospital said. Over 520 dengue cases have been reported in Delhi this year till September 21, as per the data shared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). According to a report released by the civic body on September 26, as many as 281 cases have been reported this month alone till September 21. The spurt in dengue cases in the national capital has come after Delhi was lashed by incessant rains recently. 106 cases of malaria and 20 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi in the same period, the report said. Chatterjee said many people are reluctant to get the COVID-19 test done, fearing they will have to go in isolation as they want to "go on with their lives". "So, given the slump in daily Covid cases in Delhi and rise in dengue cases, many are assuming that if they have fever or sore throat or body ache, it is either regular viral infection or something else, but not Covid. But, it could be Covid too, as the coronavirus is still amidst us," he cautioned and urged people to get themselves tested for Covid too if symptoms persist. At many workplaces, employees continue to work despite having cough, cold or sore throat, while earlier when the <keyword id="8785701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19-cases" source="Orion">COVID-19 cases</keyword> were on the rise, it would have been a strict no-no with an option of a 'work from home' regimen given to them, doctors said. "But, I would urge people to not assume any kind of fever as a regular flu, if their symptoms are prolonged and intense, consult a doctor," Chatterjee added. Overlapping symptoms of dengue, Covid-19 confusing in many cases, say doctors

The number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases witnesses a sharp rise in September with more than 400 new infections being reported in the last week of the month. A total of 693 cases of dengue were reported last month till September 28, according to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. The city recorded a total of 525 dengue cases till September 21 this year while 412 fresh cases were reported in the week that followed, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to 937 so far this year, it said. In 2015, the city had witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. It was Delhi's worst dengue outbreak since 1996. Of the 937 total cases recorded till September 28 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 28 period since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 2,152. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. A total of 125 cases of malaria and 23 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 28, the report said. The MCD has said that it has been conducting drives to check the spread of dengue. Amid a spike in dengue cases in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of Covid and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of Covid which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is Covid positive or not, doctors said. Amid the continuous spurt in dengue cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently said that a plan has been devised to combat the vector-borne disease. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the city, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. According to the MCD report, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found at 1,30,544 households this year till September 28. Authorities issued 96,189 legal notices for mosquitogenic conditions, and 35,668 prosecutions were launched. In 2018, Delhi had reported 481 dengue cases during the January 1-September 21 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 282, 212 and 273, respectively. Ten deaths each were reported due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019. <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> has registered a huge spurt in dengue cases, with over 100 people being diagnosed with the infection in the last one week, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to nearly 400 so far this year. According to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (<keyword id="55093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mcd" source="Orion">MCD</keyword>) on Monday, 152 cases have been reported in this month alone till September 17. The city had recorded 295 dengue cases till September 9. In the last one week, 101 fresh cases have been reported. Out of the 396 total cases recorded till September 17 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 17 period, since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 1,465. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. Ninety-two cases of malaria and 17 case of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 17, the report said. A senior MCD official had earlier said the rising cases of dengue is a "matter of concern for us" and "we are working on measures to combat it". Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Civic officials said dengue cases were recorded earlier than usual this year due to weather conditions congenial for mosquito breeding. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the national capital, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. Amid the spike in cases of dengue in Delhi, mosquito breeding was found at public places and government offices, including a police academy and a metro station, during an anti-dengue drive following which legal measures were taken by the civic authorities. "This year, MCD has issued 82,490 legal notices and 28,846 challans so far against defaulters," the civic body had said in a statement on September 16. Intensifying its ongoing drive for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases, the MCD has carried out a "massive drive to detect mosquito-breeding in the premises of government offices, construction sites, schools, universities, educational institutes, metro parking lots and metro stations". During the drive, breeding of mosquito larvae was found on their premises and the "department issued 42 challans and 18 notices", it said.
