A special court in India today sentenced <keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="chhota-rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword> to a life sentence, for ordering a hit on journalist <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/j-dey-verdict-all-you-need-to-know/articleshow/63997333.cms">Jyotirmoy Dey’s (J-Dey)</a> seven years ago. The court also sentenced eight other accused who were involved in the conspiracy. Rajendra S. Nikhalje, aka Chhota Rajan, has been linked to <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword> in the past, the most wanted criminal in India. He has also been linked to multiple other crimes, including murder, extortion and drug trafficking. Here’s a brief history of Rajan’s life, his eventual arrest and recent conviction. Rajan’s Entry into crime <ul><li><keyword id="19113" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranjan">Ranjan</keyword> started out his criminal career by committing petty crimes, before his mentor Bada Rajan brought him into black marketing of cinema tickets at Sahkar Cinema, near Chembur in Mumbai, in the 1980s. </li></ul><ul><li>Under the mentorship of Bada Rajan and Yadagiri of Hyderabad, he learnt the tricks of the trade. </li></ul><ul><li>His friends and colleagues addressed him as ‘Nana’.</li></ul>Entry into organised crime <ul><li>Chhota Rajan ascended to the throne after the death of his mentor, Bada Rajan.</li></ul><ul><li>For a short period, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawood_Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</a>, Rajan and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arun_Gawli">Arun Gawli</a>, a well known politician and underworld don in the country, worked together. </li></ul><ul><li>Gawli's elder brother Papa Gawli was assassinated over a drug deal and a rift formed.</li></ul><ul><li>Later, Rajan fled to <keyword id="6354539" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dubai">Dubai</keyword> and never returned.</li></ul><ul><li>After the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Bombay_bombings">1993 Bombay bombings</a>, Dawood and Rajan fell out. There were even reports that he tipped off India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) about Dawood's network. </li></ul>The split <ul><li>Rajan formed his own gang after the split, sometimes called Nana Company.</li></ul><ul><li>Reports of bloody shootouts between Rajan and Dawood’s henchmen were common after the split.</li></ul><ul><li>The Dawood-Rajan party was over, the messy end coming in September 2000, with Dawood Ibrahim’s left-hand man, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chhota_Shakeel">Chhota Shakeel's</a> attack on Rajan in his Bangkok hotel room.</li></ul>The capture <ul><li>On 25 October 2015, he was captured in Bali, Indonesia with the help of a tip-off by Australian police stating that Rajan had travelled to Bali under the alias Mohan Kumar. </li></ul><ul><li>Rajan was then caught at the airport and was extradited to India on 6 November 2015.</li></ul><ul><li>He was then transferred to <keyword id="56350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tihar-jail">Tihar Jail</keyword> in the country’s capital, awaiting trial in almost 70 cases.</li></ul>Convictions <ul><li>He has been convicted in two cases till date. The first one being fake passport case - <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/verdict-in-chhota-rajans-fake-passport-case-on-april-12-1674550">convicted on 12 April 2017</a>.</li></ul><ul><li>The other being the J-Dey murder case (convicted on 2 May 2018) wherein he ordered a hit on a journalist J-Dey who reported that Chhota Rajan was the mastermind behind a murder attempt on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawood_Ibrahim#Family">Dawood's brother, Iqbal Kaskar</a>, in Mumbai. Upset with his report, Chhota Rajan ordered a hit on the journalist.</li></ul><ul><li>The hit was carried out on 11 June 2011 by four motorcycle-borne gunmen in Hiranandani Gardens in Mumbai’s Powai neighbourhood. The murder was linked with Chhota Rajan by the police.</li></ul>

A brief history of one of India’s most famous gangsters

Maharashtra government, which was so far handling all cases against underworld gangster <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</a>, has now handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the national investigation agency. This has been done keeping in mind CBI’s expertise in handling such cases. 
 
Rajan, who was arrested in Bali, Indonesia on 25th October after the Bali police was tipped off by Australian police, was deported to India yesterday. He would step foot in the country after 27 years, after he fled to Dubai in 1988, facing serious cases like murder, extortion and drug smuggling. 
 
Rajan, who had expressed his desire to be sent to Delhi and not Mumbai, had stated that some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Chhota-Rajan-says-Pakistans-ISI-is-hidingDawood/articleshow/49642843.cms">officers in Mumbai police have contacts with Dawood Ibrahim</a>, Rajan’s arch rival and the most wanted man in India, who is the prime accused in 1993 Bombay bombings, which left over 350 dead and 1200 injured. 
 
If reports are to be believed, Rajan has struck a deal with central security agencies, following which all cases against him would be taken out of Maharashtra Police and that he would be lodged outside the state. These involve almost 70 cases that were registered against Rajan, out of which 20 are for murder, four under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

​Chhota Rajan now over to CBI

<keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword>, the Indian underworld gangster caught on 25th October by the Indonesian police in Bali, has hinted at connections that “some officers” in Mumbai Police have with the underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim. He also stated that he is not afraid of Ibrahim and would continue his fight against him. It is to be known that Rajan was once a close confidante of Dawood, who is wanted for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, in which more than 350 people lost their lives. 
 
Rajan, who was arrested in Bali, the popular tourist town of Indonesia, on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is expected to be produced before a court soon where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India. 
 
He is likely to be deported to India soon. "The entire process is likely to be completed in next two-three days," an Indian official had said yesterday. 
 
"The government can keep me anywhere - Delhi or Mumbai. But there should be no injustice done to me. All cases against me are false," Rajan, who is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking, told reporters when asked whether he was afraid of returning to Mumbai. 
 
"Mumbai police has been unjust to me. Delhi government taking note of that should do justice to me," he said. 
 
An Indian team has been working with its Indonesian counterparts to take over Rajan's custody. 
 
The Indian team, comprising officers from CBI, Mumbai and Delhi police, arrived here on Sunday and they came along with a detailed dossier on 55-year-old Rajan and his involvement in various crimes in India. 
 
The team for the first time questioned him yesterday in the presence of Indonesian police at the detention centre where he has been lodged for the last 10 days. 
 
First Secretary (consular) in the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, Sanjeev Kumar Agrawal, who met Rajan for nearly half an hour on Sunday, was also present when the Indian team examined Rajan. 
 
While being taken out of the detention centre, Rajan had said that Dawood is currently hiding in Pakistan under the direct patronage of ISI. 
 
"ISI chhupa rahi hai (ISI is hiding him)," he said. 
 
Mumbai Police has registered 20 murder cases against Rajan, four cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. Delhi Police has got six cases against him. 
 
Rajan, whose original name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje, was arrested in Bali on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia. 
 
In 2000, there was an attempt on Rajan's life when Dawood's men tracked him down to a hotel in Bangkok but he managed a dramatic escape. 
 
In the absence of an extradition treaty, the Indian authorities have already provided documents to their Indonesian counterparts about his Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.

Chhota Rajan says Pakistan’s ISI is hiding

Fugitive <keyword id="6398539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chhota-Rajan">Chhota Rajan</keyword>, wanted over a series of murders in India, has been arrested in Indonesia by <keyword id="977736" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bali-Police">Bali Police</keyword> after decades on the run. 
 Home Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> and the Central Bureau of Investigation (<keyword id="6354572" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CBI">CBI</keyword>) confirmed the arrest of the <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword> don in Indonesia. 
 According to an official statement by the probe agency, at the request of CBI (<keyword id="6355520" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Interpol">interpol</keyword>) India, the Bali Police has arrested an Indian national - Mohan Kumar on October 25. Mohan Kumar alias Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan is a fugitive and the CBI has been pursuing the matter with Australian authorities. 
 
Acting on a tip-off from the Australian Police, Indonesian authorities detained Chhota Rajan on Sunday after he arrived in a resort island of Bali from Sydney. 
 
The 55-year-old Nikalje, an alleged crime boss in India, had been on the run for two decades, Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto told AFP with Interpol flagging him as a wanted man back in 1995. 
 
He said the department received information from police in Canberra on Sunday about the red notice for a murderer. 
 
"We arrested the man at the airport. What we know is that this man was suspected to have carried out 15 to 20 murders in India." 
 
A spokesperson for Australian Federal Police said Interpol in Canberra had alerted Indonesian authorities "who apprehended Nikalje at the request of Indian authorities". 
 
The federal police confirmed last month that Nikalje was living in Australia under another identity and had been in discussions with Indian authorities, the spokesperson said, but would not provide further details.

He was once the most trusted aide of terrorist and crime boss <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dawood+Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim.</a> 
 A team of officials would soon be sent to <keyword id="19988" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bali">Bali</keyword> to bring back the gangster who is in custody since Sunday. 
 There is no news about the exact arrangements to bring him back because of security concerns arising out of his fierce rivalry with underworld don <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword> and his gang. 
 
They said agencies are working on more than one plan to bring back 55-year-old Rajan. 
 
Rajan was travelling with the identity of Mohan Kumar with passport number G9273860 when he was apprehended at the airport in Bali, after arriving there on a Garuda Indonesia flight GA715, by the Indonesian Police on a tip off from Australian authorities.

	It has rekindled suspicions about the manner in which Mumbai cops landed in New Delhi to enlist the help of Delhi Police ostensibly to execute arrest warrants pending against members of Chhota Rajan gang. 
 

	The claim is significant also because of the timing: it comes at a time when evidence has emerged that Doval's interest in the leader of the notorious crime syndicate may not have waned even after a decade he spent outside the government following his superannuation.

So far, Indian agencies have used an old photograph - one which was taken in 1993 - in all the dossiers submitted to Pakistan to claim that the fugitive was being sheltered by the hostile neighbour, and to demand his return. The image of the ageing don with a receding hairline showed that Indian agencies have been tracking him with considerable success.

<ul><li>It took the country seven years to reach the verdict. </li><li>Eight other accused were also given the life sentence for the crime. </li><li>Accused also fined ₹22.3 million.</li></ul> On Wednesday, a special court in India, called the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), found the nine accused in the murder of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/j-dey-verdict-all-you-need-to-know/articleshow/63997333.cms">journalist J-Dey</a>, including <keyword id="6355561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajan">Rajan</keyword>, Rohit Tangappa, Arun Dake, Anil Waghmode, Magesh Aagavane, Sachin Gaikwad, Abhijeet Shinde and <keyword id="5380025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nilesh-Shedge">Nilesh Shedge</keyword>, guilty of conspiracy, murder, and committing murder. Chhota Rajan is a Mumbai-born gangster with ties to <keyword id="42945" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dawood">Dawood</keyword> Ibrahim and <keyword id="137255" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Gawli">Arun Gawli</keyword>. Abhijeet, Nilesh and Deepak were all involved in the procurement of the murder weapon and its disposal. The verdict finally came for <keyword id="676000" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jyotirmoy-Dey">Jyotirmoy Dey</keyword>’s case, who is also known as J-Dey, on May 3rd. The veteran journalist, crime and investigations editor for Indian daily Mid Day was an expert on the Mumbai underworld. He was shot at by a motorcycle-borne sharpshooter in 2011. Chhota Rajan ordered the hit because he was upset with the journalist’s reports about him. The court fined the convicted a total of ₹22.3 million. Of this, ₹500,000 was to be paid to Dey’s sister Lina Dey. Cartridge supplier Deepak Sisodia was fined ₹15,00,000, while the other accused were ordered to pay ₹26,00,000 each. Another accused, Jigna Vora, who had spent almost ten months in jail, broke down when she was acquitted, says a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/chhota-rajan-8-others-get-life-for-cold-blooded-murder-of-j-dey/articleshow/64008097.cms?from=mdr">report</a>. Paulson Joseph, who supplied a SIM card and money required for the hit, was also acquitted. The defendant's lawyers submitted mitigating circumstances like the age, family conditions and financial circumstances of the accused in order to seek leniency in the ruling. One of India's most wanted gangsters has finally been captured after 20 years on the run

Of late, a new story involving Mumbai’s famed underworld don Abu Salem has popped up. A 25 year old woman has given an ultimatum to end her life if she isnt allowed to get hitched to Abu Salem. Though this isn’t a love affair but a morphed image of her with Salem having defamed her earlier has been the epicentre of trouble. The fake image has heavily affected the woman and she wants to get married to Salem to get relief from the crisis.

Haji Mastan and Sona

Haji Mastan, the celebrity gangster who has was the undisputed king of Mumbai underworld for 20 years is known to have been married with Bollywood actress Sona. A lookalike of yesteryears actress, Madhubala , Sona has acted in a very few movies in the vintage Bollywood. However, after Mastan’s death, Sona is trying hard to make ends meet. 
 
Speaking to Cinelplot.com, Sona said, “Sahab really loved me and his first wife was very good to me. She would actually feed me with her own hands. But the day he died, she and her children changed their attitude towards me. I suddenly felt very alone.” 
 
 
 
Dawood Ibrahim 
 
The ruler of Mumbai’s D company didn’t only revolutionized the crime scenario but also made it horrific and dreadful to the core. As he graduated from mafia to don, Dawood has ‘dated’ quite a number of women ranging from Bollywood to Middle Eastern princess.

It was Rajan who influenced big producers like Raj Kumar Santoshi to get her preferred roles in big budget films. Mamta’s affair with Rajan was a blessing for her as she rose to the peak of her career during this time. However, media reports say, Mamta married drug smuggler Vicky sometime later and settled. 
 
This wasn’t an end of love story for Rajan. The gangster who was seriously injured in an encounter with rival Dawood’s group, fled from hospital using mountaineering kit.
