That was a relief, after a pregnancy full of <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> scares. When a nurse pricked Ryder's heel for the<a href="https://www.marchofdimes.org/baby/newborn-screening-tests-for-your-baby.aspx"> newborn screening</a>, I didn't think anything of it. I was just happy to be holding a healthy baby in my arms. Then, two days after we got home, I got the scariest phone call of my life. It was the hospital, telling us to drop everything and come back. Ryder's newborn screening had shown something unexpected, and we needed more testing immediately.That call was the first sign that Ryder and I would become experts in a condition I had never heard of. <h2>Getting a diagnosis</h2>At first, doctors didn't know exactly what was wrong. They just kept telling me to make sure Ryder was eating. Luckily, I was overproducing breast milk, and Ryder was a good nurser. I probably overfed her. After some additional testing, Ryder was diagnosed with<a href="https://www.rageregardlessry.org/about-rage-regardless-ry"> Very Long-chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase-Deficiency</a>. VLCAD is a genetic metabolic disorder. On a basic level, it means that Ryder's body can't properly convert fats into energy. To keep Ryder healthy, she couldn't have any periods of fasting. I had alarms set every two hours, and for eight months Ryder ate whenever the alarm went off. It didn't matter if she was hungry, <a href="https://www.insider.com/newborn-sleep">if she was asleep</a>, or if I was too tired to see straight — she had to eat to stay healthy. By the time Ryder was 8 months old her doctors had good news. She was <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-much-weight-should-a-baby-gain">gaining weight well</a> and had good energy levels, so they determined that she had a more mild case. She started to go longer and longer without eating, and I was finally able to get at least a little bit of sleep. <h2>Deciding to speak out</h2>That's when I began to transition out of crisis mode and into advocacy. The first eight months of Ryder's life were a blur. I was feeding her every two hours, waking her up at night, and worrying about her even in the few minutes I could have been sleeping. I was a zombie. In fact, my sister, mother, and grandmother set up a schedule so that someone was always around because they were worried that I was too tired to take care of Ryder, and myself. In those moments, I felt so alone. Even online there were no support groups and very few resources. My heart broke for the parents who were raising children with more severe VLCAD and those who didn't have the tight-knit support system that I did. My family, like many Black families, likes to keep our private lives private. When I told my mom that I wanted to share Ryder's diagnosis, she was apprehensive. She would rather we just deal with things within our home. But I had a platform, and I was beginning to feel like I had it for a reason.When I shared Ryder's diagnosis on social media, messages came in from around the world. Suddenly, it didn't feel like VLCAD was so rare, and I didn't feel so alone. <h2>The birth of a nonprofit</h2>I learned so much reading about the experiences of other families navigating metabolic disorders. Even my family changed their minds. Now they say that speaking out was the best thing I couldn't have done. It's so powerful when we share our stories and come together. In 2018, I founded <a href="https://www.rageregardlessry.org/">Rage Regardless Ry</a>, a nonprofit to help families dealing with metabolic conditions. Back when I was pregnant, when doctors thought something was wrong with my baby, friends told me to "rage regardless." At my baby shower, people were saying it again and again. Years later when we needed a name for the nonprofit, it was right there. I didn't want to raise money to send it back to a massive hospital. I wanted to put it directly in the hands of families. We help with little things, like bringing in a night nurse to help with frequent feeding or providing support so a mom can have day to herself. Right now,<a href="https://spark.ucla.edu/project/20015"> we're running a campaign</a> to help pay for hospital parking — an expense that adds up quickly and can be a barrier to care for many families. We were able to help two families in our first year. In 2020, we were able to help 40. I love to see the organization grow. Seeing more people talk about metabolic disorders, and watching Ryder flourish, has shown me that we can rage on, regardless of what life throws at us. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cheynotshy/">Cheyenne Floyd</a> is a cast member on MTV's Teen Mom OG. 'Teen Mom' Cheyenne Floyd: After my daughter was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition, I set out to help other families

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A video depicting a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling on <keyword id="9295731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="george-floyd">George Floyd</keyword>'s neck before Floyd died in police custody went viral on social media. </li><li>While many believe they're helping spread awareness of police brutality and <keyword id="44060" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Racism">racism</keyword> in the US by sharing the video, some activists and mental health professionals say the clip is traumatic for the black community. </li><li>"Seeing these images over and over can result in things like anxiety, fear, anger, worthlessness, humiliation, interpersonal sensitivity, traumatization, feeling triggered — all of these things that we would typically really associate with something like a traumatic disorder," said psychiatrist Danielle Hairston, the president of the American Psychiatric Association's Black Caucus. </li></ul>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-man-george-floyd-dies-after-police-officer-kneels-neck-2020-5">video of George Floyd's death</a> spread like wildfire. It was shocking, horrifying, and violent in its depiction of Floyd, a black man, pinned down to the ground by the knee of Derek Chauvin, a white police officer (who has since been removed from his post). Chauvin dug his knee into Floyd's neck for close to ten minutes as Floyd pleaded, saying "I can't breathe," before he stopped moving. Floyd later died in police custody in Minneapolis. The footage, taken by a bystander and shared on social media, appears to incriminate Chauvin, who was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/protests-death-george-floyd-minneapolis-new-york-denver-2020-5">charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday</a>. It's also become a touchpoint for many people online who believe sharing this kind of content can lead to action like the arrest of Chauvin. But activists, members of the black community, and psychiatrists beg to differ, and are instead asking their followers to stop spreading the video. "Stop sharing the videos of George Floyd's murder," Queen-Cheyenne Wade, an organizer and educator based in the Boston area, said in a tweet on May 26. There are countless tweets and Instagram posts that argue the video of Floyd — like footage of Ahmaud Arbery and Eric Garner's killings — depicts a "modern-day lynching." Mikki Kendall, an activist and the author of "Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot," called the deaths of black Americans "pain porn," and said she would never post "images of people being killed." A <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/highlights/spotlight/issue-128">2018 study by researchers from the University of Connecticut</a> found that nonwhite Americans experience PTSD at a higher rate than white people, a phenomenon largely considered to occur due to racism. The sharing of this type of content further contributes to this issue, according to psychiatrist Danielle Hairston, the president of the American Psychiatric Association's Black Caucus."There's a correlation between racism and psychological distress amongst black Americans," Hairston told Insider. "Seeing these images over and over can result in things like anxiety, fear, anger, worthlessness, humiliation, interpersonal sensitivity, traumatization, feeling triggered — all of these things that we would typically really associate with something like a traumatic disorder." <h2>Activists say that spreading the footage on social media won't help change the minds of white supremacists.</h2>The rationale behind the sharing of the video is often the same — that people hope this kind of raw footage can help change the minds of white supremacists. One white person who posted the video on his Instagram story, and wished to remain anonymous for the article, said he feels that the footage is "something so horrible that needs to be seen firsthand to understand the intensity of police brutality, especially in hopes it reaches people on the far right." Along with the video, he also shared resources encouraging his followers to call the local authorities in Minneapolis to fight for the arrest of Chauvin. But some activists disagree with that point of view, especially within the echo chamber of one's social media feed, where it's unlikely for your posts to reach and change the minds of people with opposing views."The reality is, you can find that video on the internet. All you have to do is Google it. But perpetuating trauma porn doesn't actually make people want to take action more," Thanu Yakupitiyage, a Brooklyn-based activist and cultural organizer, told Insider. Wade, who is also the cofounder of the Greater Boston Marxist Association, told Insider that while she understands "the good intention of trying to spread awareness for a racist system," that is actually "a misguided notion.""By sharing these videos, you're desensitizing white folks who already are taught to trivialize black lives from a white supremacist system, and now kind of continue that repetitive trauma for black folks by sharing these videos," Wade said.Especially during a time like the coronavirus pandemic, when people feel helpless and are stuck at home, Wade said the reaction to Floyd's story by sharing the video is unsurprising. "With the pandemic, there's this extra anxiety about how to spread awareness during a time when we can't really congregate in a physical sense," she said. "The intentions that come behind sharing these videos can usually be from good intentions." It's important to note that it's not just white people sharing the footage, according to Hairston, as some black Americans and nonblack <keyword id="5014530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="people-of-color">people of color</keyword> also believe in the importance of viewing these kinds of events. <h2>Footage depicting violence against black people has been prominent for decades, even before the advent of social media. </h2>Hairston said that though social media is a relatively recent addition to our <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>, the American obsession with images of black deaths has been around for nearly a century. "This is not new," Hairston said. When 14-year-old Emmett Till was murdered in Mississippi in 1955, his mother wanted to show the world the brutality of his lynching by having an open-casket funeral. As "Freedom on My Mind: A History of African Americans, with Documents," by Deborah Gray White, Mia Bay, and Waldo E. Martin Jr. stated, "The open-coffin funeral held by Mamie Till Bradley exposed the world to more than her son Emmett Till's bloated, mutilated body. Her decision focused attention not only on U.S. racism and the barbarism of lynching but also on the limitations and vulnerabilities of American democracy." In Till's case, this was a deliberate effort to demonstrate the atrocities of racism. But activists argue that this is not usually the case when the media depicts footage like that of Floyd, Arbery, Garner, and countless others. <h2>Alternatives to sharing the George Floyd video include donating to memorial funds or other actions that can make a difference. </h2>Activists and Hairston agreed that people who feel outraged and impassioned by issues of racial violence and the deaths of Arbery, Floyd, and others, should continue to share with their social media followers, while bearing in mind that sharing the video won't help anyone. "You can acknowledge outrage, you can acknowledge anger, you can acknowledge 'I'm wanting to be an ally.' You can acknowledge wanting to bring attention to this. You can do all of that without reposting a video like this, a constant reel," Hairston said. Wade recommends that people channel their anger and energy towards raising money for organizations and funds that support black Americans and work to end this violence agaist black people.Wade said she encourages "uplifting, and donating, and volunteering for the work of organizations and activists and organizers that are doing this work on the ground for these communities." "The <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd">George Floyd Memorial Fund</a> or the <a href="https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/">Minnesota Freedom Fund</a> are two really great ways that you can show solidarity and uplift," Wade added. White people who want to engage with white supremacists on issues of racial violence should consider sending videos directly to those relatives or colleagues, Yakupitiyage said. "It's a savior syndrome, this idea that you post a video of violence and then somehow that's going to change people's minds," said Yakupitiyage, who identifies as a nonblack person of color. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Briana Dejesus, Cheyenne Floyd, and Leah Messer from "Teen Mom" discussed their journeys.</li><li>They agreed that they needed to be more accepting of themselves.</li></ul>"A roller coaster" is how Briana Dejesus, a star of "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QUQuyOSZY0">Teen Mom: The Next Chapter</a>," described MTV's newest addition to the "Teen Mom" franchise.Cheyenne Floyd and Leah Messer agreed with Dejesus' perspective on the new series, which follows them and their castmates from "Teen Mom OG" and "Teen Mom 2."Dejesus, Floyd, and Messer sat down with Insider to talk about how they'd grown since the first season of their show and share their advice for navigating motherhood and co-parenting relationships.<h2>Embrace change as a sign of growth</h2>"There have been so many changes from becoming a mom at 17 to now being a mom at 30 to teenagers," Messer said.She said it had been rewarding to see her 12-year-old twins, <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-leah-messers-daughters-are-in-therapy-2022-4">Ali and Aleeah</a>, becoming young women and to have age-appropriate conversations with them about the pressures of being a teenager, including how to prevent teen pregnancy. Messer said she values open communication between parents and children and felt that this was missing when she was a teenager.Reflecting on her evolution on the show, Floyd said, "I look back at my first season, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cheyenne-floyd-help-families-with-rare-condition-2022-1">Ryder was so little</a> — but then I look at myself and think, you were so little too." She said her biggest challenge right now is knowing where to draw the line between giving Ryder everything she wants and making sure she stays humble."I'm still changing and evolving," Floyd said. "It's a weird feeling, but it's great to see my growth and my daughter's growth."Dejesus' advice is to appreciate the time you have with your kids. "I'm just trying to soak up what I can and live in the moment," she said, "because time flies by, and the next thing you know the kids are out the door."<h2>Be yourself and have fun</h2>The women said that while it can feel strange having the cameras around, the kids are a good reminder not to take themselves too seriously.Messer said her 9-year-old daughter, Addie, enjoys filming. "She loves being funny and making everybody laugh," Messer said.Floyd said Ryder loves being on camera too and recently discovered that not everyone grows up with film crews in their homes. "Ryder tells everybody she's on TV when she walks in the classroom," Floyd said. "I feel like she would be in this world whether or not it was because of me."Dejesus said her 5-year-old daughter, Stella, is the same way, running over to the TV whenever she hears the promos for "Teen Mom." Meanwhile, Nova, Dejesus' 10-year-old daughter, "is like, I'm too bougie for this lifestyle," Dejesus said.<h2>Give yourself some slack</h2>The three moms reflected on the importance of being more accepting of themselves as they've gotten older.Messer described acceptance as "being patient with yourself, knowing that you're not perfect and probably will make mistakes as a mom."Dejesus said mistakes are part of learning. "You can push forward and realize that those mistakes also made you who you are today," she said.For Floyd, it's about trying to instill discipline in her kids while recognizing that she's human and doesn't always make the right choices."I feel like my patience has grown for sure, and Ryder's of the age where she's trying me, so we're battling right now," Floyd said. "The best advice I've gotten recently is to give myself grace as I'm learning, changing, and growing up."<h2>Let go of pride and communicate</h2>The moms are no strangers to learning how to co-parent with an ex. Floyd said co-parenting had felt like having a full-time job, while Dejesus described it as an ongoing struggle for her family."Co-parenting takes so much work," Floyd said. "But if you're patient, learn how to communicate, and put your pride to the side, then you can make it happen. Keep the kids first."Messer said her co-parenting relationship with her exes is "in such a great place today than it was eight years ago." She said that being willing to communicate and learn from each other and putting egos aside had allowed Messer and her kids' fathers to take a major step forward in their co-parenting relationships.<h2>Find people who support you</h2>From sharing the experience of being young moms to becoming part of the "Teen Mom" universe, the cast members' bond is undeniable. But the women said these relationships aren't always smooth sailing."Within any friendship there's conflict sometimes," Floyd said, "and it can be hard to navigate these dynamics."But they said conflict shouldn't deter someone from reaching out for support, adding that having people who uplift you and understand what you're going through can help you feel less isolated as a parent."I love the way we've all connected and continued to grow," Messer said, "and that's why I'm excited for this next chapter."

Now viewers can get a closer look at the dynamics between the moms and their moms in the new season of "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b25ka7BwUBU">Teen Mom: Family Reunion</a>."The second season of "Teen Mom: Family Reunion" follows Catelynn Lowell and <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-maci-boookout-talks-about-healing-from-trauma-2022-9">Maci Bookout</a> of "Teen Mom OG" (2009-2021), Jade Cline of "Teen Mom 2" (2019-2022), and Kiaya Elliott of "Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant" (2018-2022), along with their co-stars Cheyenne Floyd and Amber Portwood of "Teen Mom OG," Briana DeJesus and Ashley Jones of "Teen Mom 2," and Kayla Sessler of "Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant."Some of the cast's own mothers will be joining the women as they work on their mother-daughter relationships through team-building exercises and sessions with life coach Dr. Cheyenne Bryant.Lowell, Cline, Elliott, and Bookout sat down with Insider to talk about what they've learned from their moms about what to do — and what not to do — when it comes to raising kids.<h2>'That's not the mom I had growing up'</h2>These four moms have seen firsthand that the rules of parenting shift as mothers become grandmothers."I'm like, 'Wow, my mom got weak with those grandbabies,'" Lowell, 30, told Insider. "Whatever happened to the mom that set boundaries or grounded us?" Bookout, 31, agreed, saying that when she was a child, if she wanted a sandwich, she had to make it for herself."I'm grateful for that because it made me very independent," she said. "But I watch my mom with my kids, and she's like, 'Do you want a sandwich? I'll cut it into triangles. What about ice cream for breakfast?' This is not the mom that I had."For Elliott, her mom's grandparenting style puts her in a no-win situation at home."My mom and my son take sides against me," she said. "So if I piss my son off, he'll go and tell my mom. And I get in trouble when he gets in trouble, and I'm confused as to how that works because I'm a 22-year-old woman."<h2>Creating a chaos-free house</h2>When Elliot would get in trouble as a child, her mom would throw a sandal at her. Now Elliot practices "<a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-gentle-parenting-and-how-to-follow-it-2021-12">gentle parenting</a>" with her 4-year-old son, Amour, by talking to him and teaching him how to describe his feelings."If he's being impatient, I say, 'Do you remember the word patience?' and he'll say, 'Yeah, it means wait.' I say, 'OK, so do that.' So I'm trying to be a little more communicative," she said. Like Elliott, Cline, 25, emphasized the importance of having a good line of communication with her 5-year-old daughter, Kloie."With my childhood, there wasn't a lot of communication," Cline said. "It was like, 'I'm the adult. You're the kid. Listen to what I say,' and no one really had tolerance or respect for children's needs or opinions."Cline added: "I learned throughout my childhood what not to do and how to be a better parent and show affection."I remember growing up, we would have to go outside and pick out a switch to get our ass whooped, and I could never imagine doing that with my daughter."Cline has spoken about how her <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMZeOo1X-RA">mother has struggled with addiction</a> and substance abuse on the show. Lowell also mentioned what it was like to watch her mother's relationship with alcohol growing up, and how it affected her. Both of them say they feel motherhood has given them a chance to establish healthier relationships with their daughters than they formed with their own mothers."My house is literally chaos-free," Lowell said. "It's <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-mom-cast-shares-best-parenting-and-co-parenting-advice-2022-8">super chill and calm</a>. I grew up with an alcoholic mother, so I'm very strict." Lowell doesn't drink in front of her kids or allow out-of-control parties at her house."It's a sad reality of growing up in addiction, but I want my home to feel like a safe place for my children," she said. <h2>Taking notes from grandma</h2>Sometimes it's the grandmas who know best, but it's not always easy to heed their advice, Elliott said."The best advice my mom has given me — that I still don't listen to sometimes — is don't wear your emotions on your sleeve or the world is going to chew you up and spit you out," she said. Aside from words, what sometimes resonates most is the example their moms have set for them.Bookout said her single mom taught her how to change a flat tire and fix a toilet."My mom always said, 'I'm teaching you how to do this so you'll never need a man to do it for you,'" she added."Work ethic and making sure that your children are taken care of is something that she taught me, and also showing affection to your children. She was a very affectionate mother," she said.<h2>Seeing their mother-daughter relationship in a whole new light</h2>Some of the mother-daughter relationships have remained solid over the years, like the one between Elliott and her mom. Elliott described her mom as her support system, saying, "Most of the things I dealt with at 'Family Reunion' were personal things that I had been harboring for a long time that I didn't know were affecting me so bad."Other relationships are a work in progress, Lowell and Cline said."I feel like the relationship with my mom — there's always going to be work that needs to be done," Lowell said. "I don't know if we'll ever be super, super close but who knows."For Cline, seeing <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-teen-mom-mtv-2018-6">her castmates</a> with their moms made her realize that she didn't have a lot in common with her mom."You think as an adult, you and your mom become best friends," Cline said. "With me and my mom, so much has happened that we just never got there. I'm trying to accept that we're just different people.
