Scientists have created an artificial tongue that moves and looks just like the real deal! Here’s why

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Court documents filed this week provide more insight into the final weeks of the life of Zappos founder Tony Hsieh. </li><li>Hsieh died in a house fire in November 2020 following months of erratic behavior and a deteriorating mental state. </li></ul><p>New court documents filed this week reveal more harrowing details about the tragic final weeks of late Zappos founder Tony Hsieh, who died in a house fire in November 2020. </p><p>The latest filings emerged from an ongoing legal battle between Hsieh's family and business associates over the tech exec's multimillion dollar estate. The documents shed light on Hsieh's erratic behavior and deteriorating mental state, exacerbated by worsening abuse of ketamine and nitrous oxide, <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-las-vegas/new-court-documents-shed-more-light-on-tony-hsiehs-final-days-2677890/">the Las Vegas Review-Journal</a> and <a href="https://www.ktnv.com/news/court-documents-reveal-details-about-zappos-ceo-tony-hsiehs-last-moments">KTNV</a> reported.</p><p>According to the documents, the month before his death, Hsieh, who was 46 at the time, was taken to the hospital after he said he believed he was "crystallizing." He remarked that he was "in a simulation" and didn't know "what's real and what's not," per KTNV. </p><p>The documents, which also noted that Hsieh had begun chewing on cigarettes as his health declined, state that Hsieh first began using ketamine in November 2019 before <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tony-hsieh-tragic-final-months-in-park-city-2020-12">openly experimenting with nitrous oxide</a>, KTNV reported. </p><p>Additional details about Hsieh's drug abuse emerged earlier this year, after the publication of a biography on the former Zappos CEO. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jewel-tried-to-save-tony-hsieh-after-harrowing-home-visit-2022-3#:~:text=The%20singer%2Dsongwriter%20Jewel%20made,according%20to%20a%20new%20biography.">book reported that singer-songwriter Jewel tried to save Hsieh</a> in August 2020, after visiting his home, which she allegedly found covered in dog feces and wax from burning candles. </p><p>According to the biography, after seeing Hsieh emaciated in the backyard surrounded by canisters of nitrous oxide, Jewel spoke to his staff and urged them help the troubled tech exec. </p><p>"If he kills himself and everyone else in there from a huge fire, you can't say you weren't warned," Jewel told Hsieh's security officer, according to the biography. </p><p>Hsieh did not leave a will, and his estate has been a point of contention since his death. Richard and Andrew Hsieh — Tony's father and brother, respectively — claim friends and business associates took advantage of the tech exec, while business manager and friend Tony Lee assert Andrew used his brother for money, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal.</p><p>Lawyers for Andrew Hsieh, who was named co-administrator of Tony's estate in the summer of 2020, wrote in the filing that he had attempted to stop his brother's drug usage, and would plan "quiet trips" for Tony to "be away from the people who were exploiting him and enabling his continued decline," the Review-Journal reported. </p><p>Per KTNV, Andrew Hsieh was offered a $1 million salary to care for his brother. According to the filings, Andrew Hsieh also requested that "vitamins and protein supplements" be added to his brother's food, as he was becoming increasingly emaciated, KTNV reported. </p>

We saw all the different components of creating a faux meat, from a machine that mashes meat to simulate the process of chewing to imaging equipment that analyzes the product on a microscopic level. </p><p>While Business Insider was not allowed to take any photos, to avoid accidentally documenting items not yet ready for the spotlight, Beyond Meat sent along some pictures showing how the plant-based "sausage" gets made. </p><p>Here is a behind-the-scenes look into Beyond Meat's lab. </p>

Inside Beyond Meat's lab, where the company transforms plants into faux meat with microscopic analysis and robot mouths

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Capt. Abraham Morland flew a <keyword id="2031937" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="b-1b">B-1B</keyword> over <keyword id="10622225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="super-bowl-lv">Super Bowl LV</keyword> in a first-of-its-kind tri-bomber flyover.</li><li>He flew over Raymond James Stadium with a B-2 stealth bomber and a B-52.</li><li>The flyover was four years in the making, and initial planning started nearly a year ago.</li></ul><p>Super Bowl LV was dramatically different from previous Super Bowls, starting with the ambitious, technically precise bomber flyover that opened the game.</p><p>The smaller-than-usual crowd, capped at <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2021/02/07/super-bowl-fans-allowed-amount-covid-19#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">22,000 because of COVID-19 restrictions</a>, witnessed a dramatic years-in-the-making three-bomber flyover thanks to hours of planning and practice by Capt. Abraham Morland and his teammates.</p><p>"This is the first flyover where we have all three <keyword id="2088459" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Air-Force-bombers">Air Force bombers</keyword> flying over a major sporting event," Morland told Insider. "For me, it was symbolic because it was all of Global Strike Command, all of our bomber assets in the air at the same time flying together, which is a once-in-a-lifetime thing that I may never see again."</p><p>Morland, a member of the 37th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, usually spends his days as a <keyword id="2079409" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="b-1b-lancer">B-1B Lancer</keyword> instructor pilot, flying a couple of times a week and practicing in a flight simulator.</p><p>"I was super excited to be picked for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Morland said.</p><h2>Flying the B-1B</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force B-1B bombers Super Bowl" height="1335" width="2000" msid="81162693" hostid="261"></div><p>Morland's father is an Air Force veteran who now works as a flight-simulator technician.</p><p>"Since I can remember, I've always wanted to fly," Morland said. "My dad would take me to the simulators. He would let me fly the simulators. So from then, I just got the love and the bug of flying."</p><p>Morland got his pilot's license while participating in Angelo State University's ROTC program after enlisting in the Air Force Reserves in 2007. He got his wings at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and learned to fly the B-1B at Dyess Air Force Base before being stationed at Ellsworth.</p><p>"I went to pilot training at Sheppard, and the cool thing about Sheppard is it's the Euro-NATO joint pilot training" center, Morland said. "So they take all the fighter-pilot candidates from around NATO, and they will come and train there."</p><p>The B-1B wasn't Morland's first choice - he initially thought he'd be flying fighter jets.</p><p>"After I started flying, I saw that the B-1 could maneuver like a fighter," he said. "It doesn't pull as many G's as a fighter, but ... I really liked the idea of having other people on board, being able to just hang out with other people while you're working instead of just being by yourself."</p><div type="image" title="Air Force B-1B B-2 B-52 bombers" height="1125" width="2000" msid="81162694" hostid="261"></div><p>The B-1B is a strategic heavy bomber that was designed during the Cold War. It can no longer carry nuclear weapons, but it can carry the <a href="https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104500/b-1b-lancer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">largest payload</a> of unguided and guided missiles, bombs, mines, and cluster munitions - up to 75,000 pounds of ordnance.</p><p>The B-1B still flies combat missions but is being phased out in favor of the nuclear-capable <a href="https://www.afgsc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/2506441/afgsc-paving-way-for-b-21-begins-retirement-of-b-1-aircraft/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">B-21 Raider</a> stealth bomber, built by <a href="https://www.northropgrumman.com/what-we-do/air/b-21-faqs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northrop Grumman</a> for <a href="https://www.airforcemag.com/article/the-raider-takes-shape/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">about $550 million each</a>. The first of 17 B-1Bs to be retired in the coming months was flown to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-air-force-just-retired-the-first-b1b-lancer-bomber-2021-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Air Force's "boneyard" this month</a>, and the remaining 45 will be retired by 2036.</p><p>The B-1B can also fly at supersonic speeds and, with aerial refueling, conduct extra-long sorties, like the 28-hour flight Morland made in April to fly with Japan's air force.</p><p>"It was actually a lot of fun," he said. "The biggest thing is making sure you're getting on your sleep schedule a few days before, and then you're good to go."</p><p>The four crew members keep each other alert during the long mission, he said.</p><p>"Some people use energy drinks. Some people chew on sunflower seeds to stay awake and stay alert - it's whatever you need to, just to make sure we get the mission done."</p><h2>More than spectacle</h2><div type="image" title="B-2 bomber refueling KC-135" height="1285" width="1800" msid="81162695" hostid="261"></div><p>Morland's crew during the Super Bowl flyover comprised himself, another pilot, and two weapons officers. During a flyover of a civilian event, the weapons officers aren't managing missiles and targets; they're helping navigate and ensuring the flyover is timed correctly.</p><p>For the Super Bowl, the whole crew is "making sure that we meet up with the other aircraft on time and backing up the other aircraft to make sure we're going to fly across the stadium right on the note that we were supposed to," Morland said, referring to the moment during the national anthem when the bombers roared over the crowd.</p><p>The aircrews timed the overflight "perfectly," crossing over the stadium as red and blue fireworks hit the sky behind them, Morland said. The aircraft were also flying low and fast - <a href="https://fox4kc.com/sports/chiefs/whiteman-air-force-pilot-responsible-for-first-of-its-kind-super-bowl-flyover/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">up to 300 mph</a>.</p><p>The flyover was four years in the making, and initial planning started nearly a year ago, according <a href="https://www.afgsc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/2495636/super-bowl-lv-flyover-took-months-of-planning-coordination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to the Air Force</a>.</p><p>"Normally you're working with one unit who is used to doing these type of flyovers, so it was a new dynamic for us," Lt. Col. Chris McAlear, the trifecta's Super Bowl ground liaison, said in a press release. "Once we got the final aircrews selected and got the times from the NFL on when the national anthem would end, I put together a detailed event briefing for the three flying crews."</p><div type="image" title="Air Force B-1B Lancer bomber" height="1125" width="2000" msid="81162696" hostid="261"></div><p>The Air Force also has to coordinate with the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure there are no air-traffic issues.</p><p>After months of planning, the three aircraft flew from their respective bases - the B-52 from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, the B-1 from Ellsworth, and the B-2 from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, plus KC-1135 refueling tankers from MacDill Air Force Base in Florida - for a practice run early on game day.</p><p>"I've flown with the B-52s and the B-2s before, but not in that formation position," Morland said. "So we got that practice versus the normal practice, where we're a little further away."</p><p>He added: "But since we had a tighter area that we needed to fly over, we had to be closer in order to make it be on time, first of all, and to make it fit and make it look like it did."</p><p>The three aircraft circled airspace just south of Tampa, Florida, waiting on McAlear to tell them it was time to fly.</p><p>Flyovers do serve a training purpose, Morland said.</p><p>"The best training we could get is actually flying to a different area of the country versus going to our local training area and knowing what is already up there. So it demonstrates, first of all, that we can take off from three different bases, meet up, and be where we need to be on time."</p><p>Flyovers are also a potent recruiting tool for the military, Morland added. The B-2 pilot flying next to Morland, Capt. The creature was 20 feet long.</a></em></p><p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0221287.g004">According to a new study</a> published in the journal PLOS One, these creatures' large jaws allowed them to chomp through tough foods like mature leaves, stems, and branches when other food sources were scarce.</p><p>Only one animal today has similar jaw bones and muscles: giant pandas, which also eat hard-to-chew, thick vegetation like bamboo shoots. In fact, the new research indicates, the kangaroo's jaw was more similar in shape and function to that of today's giant pandas than to modern-day kangaroos.</p><p>"In general, they would have appeared quite different to modern-day kangaroos, with more thick-set bodies, long muscular arms with extended fingers, often only a single big toe on each foot, and box-shaped heads that were shaped more like a koala's," study author D. Rex Mitchell <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/prehistoric-giant-kangaroo-powerful-bite-1458750">told Newsweek</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><h2>Jaws like a giant panda's</h2><p>Scientists already guessed that these giant kangaroos' jaws enabled them to consume hard-to-chew vegetation. Mitchell decided to test that theory by determining how much force the skull could resist.</p><p>So he created 3D digital models of a short-faced kangaroo skull and simulated the mechanical forces at play. Mitchell found that the giant cheekbones of this ancient animal supported large muscles that would have prevented the animal's jaw from dislocating during giant bites. The bones on the front and top of its skull formed an arch that helped keep the muscles from twisting.</p><p>According to the study, the extinct kangaroo's physiology suggests that it had adapted to take advantage of foods that were difficult to chew more than any Australian herbivore alive today. Modern-day kangaroos, by contrast, prefer grasses, flowers, ferns, and moss. </p><p><em><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></em></p><p>"The ability to consume parts of plants that other herbivores of the time could not would have offered them a competitive edge when times were tough," Mitchell said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p><a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-01/uoa-oot011415.php">According to a 2015 study</a>, however, short-faced kangaroos left no modern kangaroo descendants. The 30-year-old rose to viral fame thanks to her videos in which she consumes seafood, desserts, and Hot Cheetos, among other meals. The videos — featuring chewing, slurping, and whispering — titillate not only YouTube's extreme eating community, but also those interested in autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) content. </p><p>While devouring massive quantities of seafood is common in the mukbang space, much of Ssoyoung's content has an added component: she often consumes live seafood in her videos. </p><p>In her most popular video, titled "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2inGCC5DWk&amp;t=10s=10s">Dancing Live Squid</a>," Ssoyoung prepares and consumes live <keyword id="3703" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Squid">squid</keyword>. After cutting off several squids' mantles, she coats them in soy sauce and reacts to the writhing cephalopods. </p><p>The video has been viewed over 24 million times. </p><p>The practice of eating live seafood, while controversial, is not uncommon. In 2015, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vvxzzx/how-an-octopus-feels-when-its-eaten-alive">Vice reported</a> that there are several restaurants in Seoul, South Korea dedicated to preparing live <keyword id="6546574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Octopus">octopus</keyword>. </p><p>But Ssoyoung's unconventional methods of preparation — like leaving the octopus whole and allowing the tentacles to wrap around her mouth, arguably, designed for shock factor and visual drama — have raised eyebrows. </p><p>While she's been posting videos to the platform for over a year, racking up a total of 396 million views on her mukbang and ASMR content, Ssoyoung has recently begun to receive backlash and accusations of animal cruelty. </p><h2>YouTuber and podcaster Ethan Klein, who runs the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/h3h3Productions/featured">h3h3Productions</a> channel with his wife Hila, uploaded a video titled "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&amp;v=Gld72uZeKAc&amp;feature=emb_logoemb_logo">ASMR Has Gone Way Too Far</a>," in which he condemned Ssoyoung's content and criticized selected clips from her videos for his 6.6 million subscribers.</h2><p>Klein began the 14-minute video by featuring footage from the mukbanger's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2inGCC5DWk&amp;t=10s=10s">most popular video</a>, calling out her propensity for zooming in on the writhing animals and "highlighting the brutality of the act of decapitating a living squid."</p><p>"She clearly loves torturing animals," he said.</p><p>"Is cruelty a central theme of her content? This video, I believe, proves yes," Klein added before playing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIpuyp0g0DU">a clip</a> of the Ssoyoung coating a live octopus in sauce and placing it on a grill. </p><p>Klein went on to address potential accusations he might face of bullying and xenophobia, but he doubled down on his criticism, citing a video in which Ssoyoung skips around a forest before "discovering" a live octopus — and eating it on camera. </p><p>In just two days, the video has been viewed over 1.4 million times and racked up thousands of comments. </p><p>"I'm really glad creators are bringing awareness to this," one commenter wrote on Klein's video. "This has been a problem for a long time."</p><p>"I honestly don't understand why she gets so much support," another said. "One of the most popular <keyword id="9070345" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mukbangers">mukbangers</keyword> on the platform. Says a lot about humanity and how hypocritical people are."</p><p>"The most disturbing aspect is not even necessarily the physical way she goes about killing the squids/octopuses, it's the spectacle she makes of it," another wrote.</p><h2>YouTuber Tyler Rugge, whose animal-focused content features his exotic pets, posted a video titled "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN2xADqVVeo">Mukbang Youtuber who Hurts &amp; Kills Animals on Camera</a>," in which he called for Ssoyoung's removal from the platform. </h2><p>"She tortures and kills animals before she eats them. On camera," Rugge said to his 332,000 subscribers. "Not sure how YouTube let this one slide."</p><p>He went all to call the videos "cruel" and voiced his support for removing her content from YouTube.</p><p>Several hours later, Rugge posted <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-Cm8qAgL-E&amp;feature=youtu.beu.be">a second video</a> addressing what he described as "the cultural aspect" of the controversy, in which he insisted that his critique was not xenophobic but rather a concern for animal welfare. </p><h2>Animal abuse is banned on YouTube — and the platform says Ssoyoung's content does not violate its policies. </h2><p>Animal abuse is <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2802008?hl=en">explicitly banned</a> on YouTube under its Violent or Graphic content policy.</p><p>The platform instructs against posting content "where there is infliction of unnecessary suffering or harm deliberately causing an animal distress." YouTube specifically cites "non-educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic content that shows unnecessary suffering" as subject to the policy. Historically, however, noted applications of the policy have been in incidents involving mammals, or even <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a35gg8/youtube-removed-videos-of-battlebot-robots-fighting-calling-it-animal-abuse">robots</a> simulating mammals. </p><p>"Our Trust &amp; Safety team is located around the globe and we draw upon this regional expertise when drafting our policies," a YouTube spokesperson told Insider in a statement. "We have strict policies regarding animal abuse, and have determined the videos highlighted do not violate them." </p><h2>Representatives for Ssoyoung say that the channel's purpose is to provide viewers with a new cultural perspective and that the YouTube star does not condone animal abuse. </h2><p>"Ssoyoung channel's primary goal and intention is to introduce various kinds of <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> and to deliver joy to our beloved viewers across the world. As Ssoyoung is a Korean YouTuber, we put our basis on Korean food <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>," a representative for the channel said in a statement to Insider. Rats Run Amok Mid-air: Passengers Fear For Life!

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The rough terrain of Mars is breaking the wheels of NASA's Curiosity rover.</strong></li><li><strong>In response, NASA is trying to reinvent the wheel for space exploration.</strong></li><li><strong>Metals that can "remember" their form, called shape-memory alloys, are key to the new design.</strong></li><li><strong>The wheel won't be used on the follow-on mission to Curiosity, but it could aid future Martian exploration - and vehicles on Earth.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Mars chews up our wheels and spits them out. Take NASA's one-ton, car-size Mars Curiosity robot: After just a year of cautious 0.09-mile-per-hour roving, small rocks began <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mars-curiosity-rovers-wheels-unexpectedly-damaged-2017-3">ripping large holes</a> in its tires.</br></p><p>However, NASA engineers have reinvented the wheel into a form that may one day conquer Mars.</p><p>They've created a nearly invincible tire made of woven-mesh metal that "remembers" its ideal shape and immediately springs back into form after taking a beating.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The design, highlighted in <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/specials/wheels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a recent feature</a> by the space agency, is rooted at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Engineer Colin Creager and his colleagues had initially built a wheel called a spring tire that gripped soft sand well and supported a lot of weight. But it kept hitting a major snag.<p>"We always came across this one problem of where the tires would ... get dents in them," Creager said in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCZthtgql6U" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a NASA video.</a></p><p>Then Creager bumped into materials scientist Santo Padula, who suggested using a shape-memory alloy - a super-elastic metal that pops back into place after intense strain.</p><p>"Since then, we've been collaborating ... to come up with this new tire that we think is really going to revolutionize planetary rover tires and potentially even tires for Earth, too," Creager said.</p><h2>The torture of driving in space</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>NASA has been developing space-grade tires since the 1960s, starting with its Apollo moon-landing missions.</p><p>Those efforts led to springy wire-mesh wheels on the Lunar Roving Vehicles, which astronauts drove during the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. Stiff metal strips in and on the tires helped keep the LRVs moving on soft moon dust, yet stood up to the punishment of small rocks.</p><p>The space agency later set its sites on Mars, spurring development in off-planet wheels. Yet the list of requirements for roving the red planet is daunting:</p><ul><li><strong>All-terrain</strong>: Mars is covered in sand, gravel, and boulders yet also littered with jagged rocks.</li><li><strong>Lightweight</strong>: It costs roughly $30,000 per pound to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/andy-weir-artemis-book-moon-colony-reason-2017-11">land something on Mars</a>, so every ounce counts.</li><li><strong>Durable</strong>: Solar or nuclear energy can help missions last more than a decade on the red planet.</li><li><strong>Able to survive wild temperature swings</strong>: Inflated rubber tires wouldn't last on a nearly airless world with temperatures that can shift from nearly -200 degrees to 70 degrees Fahrenheit in some locations.</li></ul><p>To handle scaling a veritable mountain, Curiosity's designers made 20-inch-high aluminum wheels. They are toughened by stiff internal rings and outer rims, can grip the soil with V-shaped treads, and absorb bumps and shocks using flexible internal spokes.</p><p>Yet mission controllers started noticing worrisome dents, holes, and tears in those tires in 2013 - about a year into the mission. Today Curiosity is instructed to avoid small pointy rocks, limiting damage, but the wheels continue to degrade.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"When the current rover wheel damage occurred, we thought it was was worth taking a look at that wheel and adapting it for the future," Creager told Business Insider.</p><h2>Tires with great memory</h2><p>After years of research, the team settled on a <a href="https://technology.grc.nasa.gov/patent/LEW-TOPS-99">nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy</a> and figured out the best process to heat-treat it.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Spring steel can only withstand 0.3% of strain (the distance the atoms in the metal shift) before it gets dented and the metal crystals permanently rearrange. The NiTi alloy, however, can suffer up to 10% strain - about 30 times better elasticity.<p>The new wheels boast some impressive stats: They can bear nearly 10 times the weight of Curiosity's wheels, function between -202 and 194 degrees Fahrenheit, have improved grip, and can climb slopes about 23% steeper.</p><p>"We [can] actually deform this all the way down to the axle and have it return to shape, which we could never even contemplate in a conventional-metal system," Padula said in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3F42ttA3o8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a NASA video</a>.</p><p>Phillip Abel, a mechanical systems expert at NASA Glenn, said the key is the stretchy bonds of the crystal structure in shape-memory alloys.</p><p>"With super-elastic materials, what you're doing is ... storing the energy of deformation in the [crystal structure]. All of the atoms are more or less where they are, but the bonds stretch," Abel told Business Insider. "The alloy, at the temperatures we're seeing, is always in its 'return to my original shape' mode. So after you deform it, it pops back to its original crystal structure."</p><p>In the toughest test to date, the wheels aced 10 kilometers of driving - more than half the <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/mission/whereistherovernow/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">total mileage of Curiosity</a> on Mars - on punishing simulated terrain.</p><p>"The rim was a little dinged up, but the spring mesh tire was like brand-new," Creager said, adding the caveat that the test did not occur at blistering Martian conditions.</p><p>"In theory, they should work, but NASA JPL is building a cryogenic test chamber to verify operation at cold temperatures," he said.</p><h2>The long road ahead</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Future Mars missions are in the works, putting pressure on NASA to rethink its tires.</p><p>A rover that's nearly identical to Curiosity yet heavier, called <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/mission/overview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mars 2020</a>, is scheduled to launch in a few years. That mission could be a boon in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/martian-oasis-water-extraterrestrial-life-2017-5">search for alien life</a>, since it may drill samples that another similarly built rover can later help <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-nasa-mars-sample-return-mission-2016-12">launch to Earth</a>.</p><p>Curiosity wasn't outfitted with the newer wheels,&#xa0;since they weren't developed before its launch, and Creager said it's probably too late to put them on NASA's upcoming Mars 2020 rover. (It takes a grueling number of tests to prove the viability of a wheel for use on a space mission.)</p><p>"You can buy nickel-titanium alloy off the shelf, but you can't just use it on Mars. There's a treatment process," Creager said.
