<keyword id="4410318" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sun-mobility" source="Orion">Sun Mobility</keyword>, an <keyword id="6357014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy" source="Orion">energy</keyword> infrastructure and services provider for electric mobility, on Thursday said it aims to serve 10 lakh vehicles through its platform by 2025. The company unveiled its SwapX compact battery swapping station at the Auto Expo 2023 here, with an aim to enable individuals to become franchisees as it looks to accelerate expansion of network. Besides, Sun Mobility also showcased its next generation battery pack S2.1, which has a higher power battery offering 45 per cent more range and interoperability. "Our aim is to have one million vehicles on our platform," SUN Mobility co-founder and chairman <keyword id="248758" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chetan-maini" source="Orion">Chetan Maini</keyword> said. The company, which offers battery swapping service to two- and three-wheelers and small four-wheelers, has already deployed over 240 stations in more than 18 cities in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. The SwapX and S2.1 smart batteries have been developed indigenously and in-house by SUN Mobility, <keyword id="7632" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="maini" source="Orion">Maini</keyword> said. "It helps us improve network density with S2.1 addressing range anxiety. Soon, users will have access to the new generation of battery packs and SwapX stations across India, he added. For franchisees, the SwapX station can be easily set up as it only requires a 15-amp socket and up to 6 square feet space, the company said. Sun Mobility aims to serve 10 lakh vehicles through its battery swapping platform by 2025

Chetan Maini, the founder of electric car company <keyword id="51538" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reva">Reva</keyword>, has resigned as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the firm, which is now owned by <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword>. <keyword id="1428806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Mathew">Arvind Mathew</keyword>, former managing director of Ford India, will take over as the new CEO of Reva on May 1. 
 
The outgoing CEO had set up Reva as a joint venture with the Maini Group, founded by Sudarshan Kumar Maini, in 1994. 
 
"I may take up a position within the Mahindra Group or may even look outside. To be honest, I have still not decided," Maini, 44, told The Economic Times. 
 
Although Maini is quitting as CEO, he will remain as a shareholder in the company. "I will continue to be a shareholder, while Arvind will look after the day-to-day operations at the company. I ran the company for 20 years. I will figure out what I want to do next," he added. 
 
Maini's stake in the company has come down to 3.57% from 5.5% since M&amp;M acquired Reva. 
 
The stake owned by Maini Group’s Sudarshan Kumar Maini has also declined from 18.43% at the end of FY2010-11 to 11.94% in FY2013-14.

Former Ford India MD To Replace Chetan Maini As Reva CEO

New Delhi, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> on Tuesday said that electric vehicles solutions firm <keyword id="4410318" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SUN-Mobility">SUN Mobility</keyword> is using its <keyword id="3228997" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azure-cloud">Azure Cloud</keyword> as well as other solutions in developing Cloud-connected <keyword id="7747739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swappable-batteries">swappable batteries</keyword> to put the country on the road to the future. The batteries as well as the swap stations are connected to the Cloud using Microsoft Azure and numerous built-in solutions like Azure IoT Hub, <keyword id="10435393" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="azure-data-factory">Azure Data Factory</keyword>, CosmosDB, Azure Databricks, among others, that transmit battery performance telemetrics back to SUN Mobility. The customers also have the option of using an app, which connects with their EV's battery and gives them real-time information of their battery's performance and the nearest swap station in case the battery is running low. "We have stations, batteries, and customers that are connected to us. There are over 150 data points coming into our system from each battery," said Chetan Maini, founder of Bengaluru-based startup SUN Mobility. With this data, SUN Mobility understands battery utilisation, most frequented routes, and peak hours. "Using AI and machine learning algorithms, it can predict the potential demand. It can not only optimise its existing network of battery swapping stations, but also plan the location and feasibility of future stations," Microsoft said in a blog post. So far, SUN Mobility has inked over 10 original equipment manufacturing (OEM) partnerships, that will enable automobile makers to use its battery technology. These include Piaggio Commercial, the Italian automobile manufacturer's Indian arm that makes autorickshaws and Ashok Leyland, India's second largest manufacturer of large commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. SUN Mobility currently has a network of 50 battery swapping stations spread across 14 cities, with plans to ramp it up to 150 stations in 20 cities by March 2021. It has already partnered with Indian Oil Company, India's largest oil and gas company, to deploy battery swap modules at their gas stations. "We always knew that the future would be on data, cloud, and analytics, and we had to rethink of how we would look at a platform and we felt that Microsoft was the kind of company we wanted to work with," said Maini who founded the Reva Electric Car Company way back in 1996. "It was talking of sustainability, looking at data at scale, talking of making an impact, and was creating platforms. All of that resonated with our long-term vision," he added. In his current role, Maini has taken a drastically different approach to powering EVs by applying the idea of shared economy to the battery ecosystem. He's come up with a pay-as-you-go battery as a service system that is run on a digital platform built on the Microsoft Cloud. "That means you don't have to wait for hours before your EV hits full charge". Ultimately, the distance your EV can travel is no longer limited by the amount of charge in one battery. "And because you don't buy the battery upfront, the cost of an EV can come down nearly 50%," Maini said, adding that if people are willing to rent homes and cars, "I figured they'd be open to renting the battery too". His company has also partnered with over a dozen companies that own fleets, including SmartE, India's largest EV fleet operator for last-mile connectivity in urban areas. "SUN Mobility's battery as a service model can have a big impact on public transportation vehicles, where every minute the vehicle is not on the road has revenue implications. And users are already seeing the gains," the blog post by Microsoft said. Microsoft Azure partners with Sun Mobility to create EV batteries that connect to the cloud

Uber’s Indian competitor Ola has a subsidiary company Ola Electric which is wholly focussed on e-mobility. Ola Electric recently gained the unicorn status too. From ride-hailing companies to logistics or delivery companies, many entities in the country have been piloting EV projects. Uber partners with India's first electric car maker for e-autorickshaws

<keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword>, the multinational automobile manufacturing corporation headquartered in Mumbai, might be bringing an electric sports car like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/batteries-for-tesla-and-other-electric-car-makers-are-getting-cheaper/articleshow/56696676.cms">Tesla</a>, to suit the Indian customers’ preference. 
 
The project would need the coming together of the design capabilities of Pininfarina, the Italian car-styling company that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Independence-Day-6-Interesting-Facts-about-Mahindra-Mahindra/articleshow/53617894.cms">Mahindra</a> acquired last year, and the electric vehicle skills of <keyword id="3583860" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra-electric">Mahindra Electric</keyword>.

Teams from Mahindra would be conducting a feasibility study for this purpose, which would take three to six months to complete. 
 
"The high-end product should be an electric vehicle product. However, we need to work on the viability of such a product," M&amp;M’s Managing Director Pawan Goenka told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/news/passenger-vehicle/cars/with-the-indian-buyer-in-mind-mm-gears-up-to-make-an-electronic-sports-car-like-tesla/articleshow/57419561.cms">ET</a>. 
 
"There are a lot of companies which are coming out with high-end electric vehicles, but only one or two have succeeded in getting good volumes; the others are struggling. We need to be cautious, but that's our dream and we are working on product feasibility."

Mahindra’s electric vehicle unit has been seeing constant funding since the acquisition of Chetan Maini-founded Reva <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/the-fascinating-evolution-of-the-electric-car/articleshow/57174436.cms">Electric Car</a> in 2009-10, even though it has seen limited success because of low volumes. 
 
While government has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Central-govt-sets-up-panel-for-electric-vehicles/articleshow/53595564.cms">offered its support</a> to the green transportation options, buyers tend to avoid electric vehicles because of low battery capacity and lack of charging facilities at public places, unlike in foreign countries. 
 In the past as well, Mahindra Electric, which was then known as <keyword id="160726" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Reva">Mahindra Reva</keyword>, had showcased a similar concept, named the Halo, at the 2014 India <keyword id="73154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Auto-Expo">Auto Expo</keyword>.

M&M might bring an electronic sports car like Tesla to the Indian roads

Have you ever heard about Formula E, the class of auto racing that only uses electric-powered cars? Launched in 2014, this competition of electric vehicles (EVs) has 12 races in 10 cities - from Hong Kong to Montreal - and 20 drivers in 10 teams sponsored by of leading automakers like Audi, BMW, DS (the new upmarket brand from PSA Peugeot Citroen), and Renault. From India, it has Mahindra, which got into the EV segment after acquiring Chetan Maini's Reva Electric in 2010, followed by subsequent investments in product development. In the ongoing 2016-17 championship, Mahindra Racing stands third, only behind Renault and Audi. "This is our most successful season in Formula E so far," says Mahindra Racing team principle <keyword id="181960" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilbagh-Gill">Dilbagh Gill</keyword>. In India however, Chairman and MD <keyword id="46425" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anand-Mahindra">Anand Mahindra</keyword> is looking towards a different kind of race, one that might run for 13 years. After all, the government has planned to move entirely to EVs by 2030, Mahindra has become the earliest mover in this field, before other big Indian corporations. However, Mahindra would certainly knows that he isn’t and can’t be the only player in this field, restricted by the manufacturing capacity that was 2000 in 2016 and is planned to go to 5000 this year. This is perhaps why he tweeted to <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Elon-Musk">Elon Musk</keyword>, "Time you got out here Elon. You don't want to leave the whole market to Mahindra, do you? The more the merrier - and greener." Tesla’s initial plan of making a 2017 debut in India has been delayed, and for its plan to see the light of the day, government and the power minister Piyush Goyal need to significantly ramp-up Mahindra’s contribution in the field, Tesla’s entry and several such ventures. However, auto analysts wonder if EVs should be the only option, and not hydrogen-powered fuel cells or other alternative clean energies? There’s lithium-ion battery powered electric cars, which are conveniently the most affordable zero-emission vehicles that one could buy, and also graphene battery technology, with 50-100 times more power density than lithium-ion batteries. Not only this, hydrogen fuel cell technologies are also seeing fast paced research and developments, and lower costs too. Fuel cell cars also have an edge over EVs, that they can be refueled as quickly as petrol or diesel vehicles and don’t need eight hours for being recharged, like EVs. Also, they can travel further between fill-ups, but one fueling station would cost up to $2 million ('13 crore) to build, which is a major issue. As per experts, Indian government's vision of a blanket technological direction should be reconsidered, keeping in mind the topography and density of the number of cities we have. While it’s true that encouraging and incentivising new technologies is vital, the government and industry also needs to rethink the EV business model. "As EVs are ideally suited for urban transport and specifically last mile connectivity, the government will need to promote the idea of working with fleet aggregators. Govt and auto industry need to have second thoughts about the electric vehicle business model. Here’s why!

Auto company <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword> will review the technology patents that <keyword id="156689" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tesla-Motors">Tesla Motors</keyword>, an American electric carmaker, has made free for its products. Mahindra Group’s Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles has been working on various electric vehicles (EV), including its upcoming sports car ‘Halo.’ The concept model was showcased at Asia’s largest motor show held in February in New Delhi. 
 
“We have not yet reviewed the patents available. (We) will have to determine the applicability to our EV products,” Pawan Goenka, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra executive director and president (automotive and farm equipment sectors), said. 
 Earlier, <keyword id="6355315" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Elon-Musk">Elon Musk</keyword>, CEO of Tesla Motors, had announced to make Tesla patents free in the spirit of the open source movement and for the advancement of electric vehicle technology. “Tesla would not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology,” he said. 
 
Hinting at Mahindra &amp; Mahindra’s interest in the Tesla patents, Chetan Maini, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles chief executive officer, said, “We will review them (patents) and it’s too early to comment on the direct benefit to us.” 
 
“As a philosophy, I do believe it’s going to make people rethink on IP and technology sharing,” he added. 
 According to media reports, Tesla’s two main competitors - <keyword id="46283" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nissan">Nissan</keyword> and BMW - are interested in collaborating with the US electric carmaker. 
Mahindra Reva has also been working to ramp up its electric vehicles, even though its market in India is small. It had also slashed the price of its electric small car, e2o, by up to Rs 0.17 million earlier this year.
