Over the next two days, these rains will remain light, according to <a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/pages/city_weather_show.php">the India Meteorological Department. </a>This year, Chennai’s rainfall deficit was around 45%, which has started shrinking.

 For the last six months, the 5 million city residents have been facing drought as monsoons played truant. Normally, Chennai would receive 140 mm of annual rainfall but this year the whole state recorded a deficit of 28% since June 1. The monsoon, that is supposed to begin from June 1, and was later like it was across the country. Four years back, the city was flooded due to cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. As many as 500 died and 1.8 million people had to move. In 2019, however the city had the problem which is just the opposite.  The Price of Water As the city’s reservoirs dried up, water became an expensive commodity. So much so, that its more expensive than petrol. Residents are reportedly paying ₹80-100 for a 20 litre drinking water can, nearly ₹4 more than the price of petrol. Those few who could afford, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/chennai-news/chennai-water-crisis-from-rs-2-000-to-rs-4-500-the-price-chennai-residents-pay-for-water-2067372">even paid</a> ₹75,000 for a month, to get a water tanker right to their homes. The local authorities are bringing water into the city via <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-first-special-train-carrying-more-than-2-million-litre-of-water-reaches-chennai/articleshow/70192058.cms">a special train, and distributing it.</a> Chennai Metro Water also started providing water at ₹700 for every 9000 litres. However, to avail of this, many of them wait for as long as three to four weeks to receive the supply. Ultimately, they would have no choice but to pay up or remain thirsty.

Chennai gets monsoon showers, but its too little to solve the water crisis

If everything goes as planned, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=motorola">Motorola</a> may start <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manufacturing+hub">manufacturing in India</a> from Chennai factory, which is lying unused since 2013. Chennai will be the third manufacturing location for <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> outside China and Brazil. 
 
Motorola, which sells phones in India through Flipkart only, is also eyeing orders from Mukesh Ambani’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jio+Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</a> for 4G phones and is expecting a larger play through its 'E', 'G' and 'X' range of devices. 
 Marcus Frost, senior marketing director for Motorola Mobility's Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions, told Times of India that they have started evaluating whether <keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">make in India</keyword> would be sensible. 
 
"India is one of the biggest markets for Motorola globally, and also among the fastest-growing. We are aware of the government's '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=make+in+india">Make in India</a>' initiative as well as the benefits that local manufacturing gives against imports. Going through the Chennai factory, or through a contract-manufacturing route, is something that is part of the evaluation,” he told the news daily. 
 Reportedly, <keyword id="2974233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="manufacturing-in-India">manufacturing in India</keyword> now is cheaper by 11%, owing to incentives for local manufacturing offered by the government. 
 
This move by the government has attracted Sony and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=xiaomi">Xiaomi</a>. Taiwan’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Foxconn">Foxconn</a> is in the process of setting up factories in India. 
 
Motorola had suspended manufacturing at its Chennai factory around 2013 as part of global production re-alignments after it was acquired by Google. 
 
Motorola sold over three million units in the country till last year and has now launched third-generation of Moto G at Rs 11,999 (8GB) and Rs 12,999 (16GB).

In a clarification to the Bombay Stock Exchange (<keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword>), <keyword id="172782" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GTL-Infrastructure">GTL Infrastructure</keyword>, the tower operator, has denied that Chennai-based telecom firm <keyword id="6360249" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aircel">Aircel</keyword> will be buying back towers from the tower operator. The company issued a clarification after a report suggested that Aircel is planning to buy back towers. 
	 
	"We wish to clarify that the news item is highly speculative in nature and the Company denies the contents of the said article,” clarified the company in a letter. 
	 
	The company further added that it doesn’t possess any material price-sensitive information that was not declared as required under Clause 36 of Listing Agreement, which could affect the share prices of the company. 
	 
	“Kindly note that the Company adheres to the best corporate governance practices and accordingly have been submitting all material price-sensitive information to the exchanges in the past. In accordance with the Listing Agreement, the Company will continue to submit any material price sensitive information in future”, stated the letter. 
	 
	Earlier this month, a news report suggested that the Chennai-based service provider Aircel was planning to buy back the telecom towers it sold to GTL Infrastructure in 2010. The report further added that the operator has been infused with cash, a part of which has been utilized to pay outstanding amounts of about Rs 3,000 crore to GTL Infrastructure and other vendors.

GTL Denies Tower Buy Back Reports

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a>, InMobi, etc deferred the joining dates of new recruits; <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=L%26T&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Larsen &amp; Toubro</a> Infotech withdrew as many as 1500 job offer from students, leaving them in a lurch. 
 
The interviews were taken back in 2014 and after one and half years, a rejection letter has left students surprised and shocked. 
 
<a href="http://www.thenewsminute.com/">The News Minute</a> reported that around 250 students across the country received mails saying they were rejected due to their performance in the test - a rule they had never heard of. 
 
Students, mostly from Chennai, said they had never heard of any assessment test. 
 
Meanwhile, sources from placement cell officers in these prominent colleges said to <a href="http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/we-were-cheated-why-tn-students-are-hunger-strike-against-lt-44059">The News Minute</a>, “We have recorded them as placed on the basis of the initial mail in 2014 that congratulated them and told them they were a part of L&amp;T. What happens after that is none of our business. Companies can hold any test they like, ethical or not. 
 Now, anguished students have gone on a hunger strike, calling <keyword id="154871" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT-Infotech">L&amp;T Infotech</keyword> move as unethical.

On 26th May, a group of 6,500 candidates who sat for L&amp;T placements in Chennai between September and November 2014 in Chennai were provided offer of intent letters. While they outlined that they weren't legally binding, they were sent subsequent letters and told to wait as they would be accepted in batches. 
 
With this offer of intent however, came a congratulatory mail. “You are now part of L&amp;T Infotech.” A series of letters followed detailing batchwise recruitment procedures based on ranking and academic performances. 
 
Under the impression that they were hired, students rejected multiple job offers. 
 
“We were given instructions by the placement cells not to sit for any other interviews. And not even subtle verbal ones – they were mails and warnings sent out in bold, huge letters,” said one of the students on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, HR representatives of L&amp;T Infotech, who handled the placements, told The News Minute that they have resigned. 
 
“We have fought for these students, we have had to take quite a lot of risks. But we decided it was enough,” said a former HR officer, on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Now students, who have loans to repay, are demanding a compensation for 18 months, saying this has been a traumatic experience for them.

With the help of this tool, the control room team will be able to fetch live updates about the resources needed and their availability. In addition, the rescue teams can be informed via phones. Saptarshi Ghosh, who heads the tech team<a href="https://thesocialrush.com/a-new-tech-to-filter-fake-news-about-disasters-by-iit-kharagpur/"> reportedly</a> said that the algorithm, with the use of <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword> algorithm, can detect fake news and is able to alert the users during natural calamities. It is said to identify the rumours by mapping information sourced by the authorities, which will also help identify the users spreading misinformation. However, the algorithm is limited to identifying disaster-related fake news only. It is able to provide upto 90% accuracy distinguishing real news and misinformation, Ghosh said. If the proposal is passed, the team is expected to further collaborate with Microsoft Research and Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) to develop the system. Here’s what will happen when you tweet: When you tweet an update on those affected by an earthquake in English or Hindi, the algo is said to identify the empathetic posts and send only the relevant information to the nearby rescue teams. Researchers at India’s top engineering college have built an algorithm to filter fake social media rumours during national disasters

The Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) has declared the <keyword id="6450287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="class-10-results">Class 10 results</keyword> on Monday.
