<keyword id="12864" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, Nov 25 () Severe cyclonic storm '<keyword id="10317634" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nivar">Nivar</keyword>' will intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm over the next 12 hours and cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and <keyword id="10329366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="puducherry-wednesday-midnight">Puducherry Wednesday midnight</keyword> or early Thursday, the <keyword id="6355166" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-meteorological-department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> said. Meanwhile, <keyword id="15300" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Water">water</keyword> will be released from Chembarambakkam lake, one of the key drinking water sources to the city, since it was nearing capacity, by noon, the government said. In its latest bulletin on Wednesday, the IMD said NIVAR over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 07 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 0530 hrs of today at about 290 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 300 km east southeast of Puducherry and 350 km south southeast of Chennai. "It is very likely to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards and cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during mid-night of November 25 and early hours of November 26 as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph," it said. Chennai and its suburbs received heavy overnight rains, with low-lying areas getting inundated and water entering houses in such localities. Civic body officials were involved in clearing the roads of stagnant water, even as many city residents recalled the damage caused during the 2015 deluge. A holiday has been declared in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday in view of the cyclone's expected landfall while transport services have been suspended. Meanwhile, PWD officials announced that 1000 cusecs of water will be released from the Chembarambakkam lake, as the level stood at 22 ft of the total 24ft. <keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, Nov 25 Gusty winds and rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday leaving several areas inundated and authorities have housed over one lakh people in shelters as severe cyclone '<keyword id="10317634" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nivar">Nivar</keyword>' hurtled towards the coast. 'Nivar would intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and it is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before dawn on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. With rains drenching parts of the state, authorities have evacuated over one lakh people and housed them in shelters besides disconnecting power supply in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure. While <keyword id="4430550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister-K-Palaniswami">Chief Minister K Palaniswami</keyword> declared Thursday a public holiday for 13 districts, a <keyword id="6473907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-order">government order</keyword> included three more districts considering the safety of people in view of the cyclone. Revenue Minister <keyword id="6435760" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="r-b-udhayakumar">R B Udhayakumar</keyword> said 1,03,291 people including children have been housed in 1,000 relief centres. Food, water and all other essentials including masks to help prevent coronavirus have been made available to them in the relief centres, he said. A senior official said subsequently, the number has increased to 1,21,152. According to the government, these people have been housed in shelters at Ariyalur, Chengelpet, Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Ranipet, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvarur, and Villupuram districts. As a precautionary measure, electricity distribution was stopped to consumers in several regions falling under such districts and especially areas that have overhead power transmission lines witnessed power cut since noon. Civic authorities meanwhile removed banners and hoardings in several districts including Chennai and Vellore expecting squally winds. Police personnel placed barricades in arterial roads and important intersections in coastal districts to bar movement of vehicles and the government appealed to the people to stay indoors. Southern Railway said eight trains including the Danapur - KSR Bengaluru Special were diverted skipping Chennai and 10 trains including the Chennai Central-Coimbatore Special were cancelled. The Chennai Metro Rail, which operated minimum services, said operations would end by 8 pm and services would resume tomorrow depending on the weather. The storm, 250 km off Chennai and 190 km and 180 km from Puducherry and Cuddalore respectively, is very likely to move northwestwards and cross coasts as a "very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph." Under the influence of the cyclone, coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kariakal regions are likely to receive rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places and extremely heavy rains at isolated places. South coastal Andhra Pradesh is also likely to witness showers at most places today. Rainfall is expected to continue in many places in these regions on Thursday too with heavy rainfall at some places. PWD officials said 1000 cusecs was released from the lake as the level stood at 22 feet of the total 24 feet. The government said it has nominated IAS official V Arun Roy to oversee relief activities in Chengelpet district. Civic body officials said stagnant water was pumped out by deploying heavy duty motors and fallen trees were being removed immediately. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Nagapattinam are the districts where the holiday is applicable tomorrow and Wednesday has already been declared a holiday.

Chennai, Apr 18 () An increased awareness onwashing hands in these times of COVID-19 and the frighteningmemories of the 2019 water crisis in the city notwithstanding,water managers are confident this summer can be seen offsmoothly, thanks to a decent northeast monsoon and othersources.This year, there may not be a water shortage in thecity in the coming months too, thanks to the northeast monsoonin 2019 and the release of Krishna water from neighbouringAndhra Pradesh.Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board(CMWSSB), which struggled to meet residents' demand lastsummer in the face of a deficit 2018 northeast monsoon, saidthe water position is "manageable" now.The four reservoirs supplying drinking water to thecity -Poondi, Cholavaram, Red Hills and Chembarambakkam- havea combined storage of 6,086 million cubic feet (mcft) as onApril 18, as against the 486 mcft during the correspondingperiod last year.The combined full capacity is 11,257 mcft."The lockdown is not for us. We have to carry out ourjobs to ensure safe and adequate water to every household inthe city, especially at this time of pandemic when everyone iswashing hands regularly and are concerned about their hygienemore than ever before," Prabhushankar T Gunalan, ExecutiveDirector, CMWSSB, said.Following all precautions vis-a-vis COVID19, the boardis not only ensuring safety of its own employees, but alsoputting in place an effective crowd management system whentankers reach localities to distribute water to people."At the CMWSSB office premises, the officials arewearing masks and using PPEs. We have also equipped the peopleinvolved in sanitation work with proper safety gear," hesaid."We are taking strict measures to make people stand inqueues to get their daily supply of water. Also, we areensuring that social distancing is being followed," he added.The city managers are "water positive and in amanageable position for at least next two years," he said.Many projects are on, including desilting of waterbodies by the Greater Chennai Corporation, even as the CMWSSBwas working on groundwater use management."We have a very good rainwater harvesting system inplace. And, in coming years Chennai will be in a much betterposition," Prabhushankar said.The CMWSSB is working on an 'ultra filtration projectin which the lakes will be filled with tertiary treated waterand then the water will be used for various other purposes.As per official estimates, in the next 4-5 years,Chennai will no longer be dependent on monsoon for waterneeds, if the plans to augment the water resources work.Year 2019 turned out to be an unforgettable one forcity residents, as the earlier deficit northeast monsoonrendered the reservoirs dry while depleting water tablesdid no help, even as the issue caught international attention.The government, under the smart city mission, isinstalling automated meter reading (AMR) meters to keep acheck on water consumption and water wastage."About 13,000 commercial establishments have beenprovided with the new meters. We will further extend theinstallation process by covering domestic establishments aswell," he added.Post COVID-19, the CMWSSB will take up door-to-doorsurvey to collect a database of water consumption and willcarry out water audits, to keep in check the demand and supplygap and also the quality of the water and whether theresources are being exploited.The northeast monsoon season officially ended onDecember 31, 2019, but Tamil Nadu experienced its residualeffects through the first week of 2020.The northeast monsoon brings bulk of the state'srainfall and Tamil Nadu received 453.2 mm rainfall betweenOctober 1 and December 31 last year, which is slightly morethan the 447.4 mm average.
