It’s a breakthrough that points to the possibility of resetting the internal clocks to restore balance, curb overeating, and ultimately help people struggling with weight gain. The new "climate risks" tool shows <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-shows-united-states-extreme-heat-belt-study-2022-8">how many days of extreme heat</a> and unhealthy air quality a property is expected to see over the next 30 years, assuming humanity is on track to stabilize climate change by 2100. The tool also shows the likelihood of more destructive events: floods, wildfires, and windstorms.<div type="image" title="group of people watch wildfire burning home in the hills with palm trees" height="1771" width="2500" msid="114374425" hostid="261" sizebytes="281278"></div>These assessments come from First Street, a former nonprofit that became a for-profit company this year, which uses computer models to quantify certain weather and climate risks for individual properties. First Street says it incorporates a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maui-wildfires-lahaina-wooden-house-spared-among-rubble-2023-8">building's specific structural characteristics</a>, as well as local infrastructure like roads and utilities."If you don't take stock of the climate risk specifically, you could be in over your head," Jeremy Porter, the head of climate implications research at First Street, told Business Insider.For example, if the cost of flood or wildfire insurance spikes as it already has in places like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/homeowners-california-florida-insurance-issues-natural-disasters-wildfires-hurricanes-2023-10">Florida and California</a>, "all of a sudden your household budget doesn't make any sense for the property that you ended up buying," he said.The new Zillow tool also makes recommendations about insurance based on First Street's analysis.To dive even deeper, you can go to First Street's website and get a free trial of its paid service, which shows ballpark estimates of how much a flood or fire could cost you, expected cooling costs, and projections of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-insurance-hurricanes-extreme-weather-relocate-to-ocala-2023-10">insurance prices</a>. You can also toggle certain renovations to see how they impact those costs.<h2 id="0eef8ad3-480e-4072-aadf-cb64222742c5">Remember those estimates aren't a crystal ball</h2>Climate-science experts outside the company have some reservations about First Street's flood and wildfire estimates, though.Michael Wara, a senior research scholar at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://heatmap.news/guides/zillow-climate-risk-flooding-fire">Heatmap News</a> to take First Street's calculations with "a lot of grains of salt."Heatmap reported that First Street probably underestimates <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-wildfire-burns-multimillion-dollar-homes-in-california-orange-county-2022-5">wildfire risk</a> in wildfire-prone areas and that flood risk is very difficult to accurately model. You can try to cross-check flood risk with other sources like seeing if the town or city has flood maps available."Everything that we're offering are probabilistic risk estimates," Porter said."I think that just in general, the models give you a pretty good indication of which properties are riskier than other properties," he added.<h2 id="ea2c710b-3a7a-45fe-b58f-971596d4b019">Then check local building codes…</h2>Once you know the climate risks, you can assess <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-why-some-homes-survive-hurricanes-lessons-homeowners-2024-10">how well a property is built</a> to withstand them.<div type="image" title="slumping one-story grey and wood panel house with panels ripped away next to a standing yellow house" height="1500" width="2249" msid="114374424" hostid="261" sizebytes="407800"></div>A good indicator of that is the local building code and whether the house is built to its standards. The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes has a tool for checking that at <a target="_blank" href="http://inspecttoprotect.org">inspecttoprotect.org</a>.Not only does FLASH rate the local building code, but the tool also shows information about the area's past <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-how-profit-natural-disasters-hurricanes-wildfires-storms-investors-2023-8">natural disasters</a> and suggests upgrades.<h2 id="03112be6-cab7-49c5-9eed-55cc34037179">... and consider renovations</h2>In the FLASH tool, you can select the year a house was built to see what <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-home-renovation-old-abandoned-cottage-scotland-before-after-photos-2022-7">renovations</a> would strengthen it against different natural disasters. Each upgrade has a cost and impact rating.Taking matters into your own hands could make a big difference because, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fema.gov/emergency-managers/risk-management/building-science/bcat#:~:text=FEMA%20tracks%20the%20building%20code,simply%20by%20its%20acronym%2C%20BCAT.">according</a> to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, only about one-third of US jurisdictions have adopted up-to-date codes to match their natural hazards.Even then, building codes are often designed to protect the lives of people inside the house, but not necessarily to prevent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-homeowner-milton-tearing-through-neighborhood-cant-sleep-2024-10">expensive property damage</a>."You got to at least have a good building code, but that's a starting point. It's not your gold standard, it's your minimum," Leslie Chapman-Henderson, FLASH's president and CEO, told BI.In some cases, renovations and upgrades can even help lower your insurance costs.

Before buying a home, check this hidden financial risk

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kevin Costner's "Horizon" was a bust at the box office, making only $11 million in its first weekend.</li><li>Costner invested over $38 million in the movie and paid for its marketing himself. </li></ul>Kevin Costner is the latest star to be reminded that passion projects don't always yield big box-office returns.The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yellowstone-timeline-of-controversy-criticism-conflict-kevin-costner-2023-4">former "Yellowstone" actor</a> quite literally bet the ranch on "Horizon: An American Saga," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/horizon-an-american-saga-reviews-critics-pan-kevin-costners-movie-2024-5">mortgaging his property in Santa Barbara and investing $38 million of his own money</a> into the three-hour film, which is intended to be the first in a four-part series about Western expansion before and after the Civil War. (Part two is set for release on August 16.)But so far, Costner's gambit on the movie he directed, cowrote, and stars in hasn't paid off: "Horizon: An American Saga" brought in only <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt17505010/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$11 million on a $100 million budget in its opening weekend</a>.This isn't the first time Costner has had a passion project go sideways. He produced, starred in, and later <a target="_blank" href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1999-sep-15-ca-10491-story.html">took over directing duties</a> in 1995's "Waterworld," an ambitious postapocalyptic blockbuster described as "Mad Max" on water. He sank <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slashfilm.com/1013479/the-wildest-things-that-happened-on-the-set-of-waterworld/">$22 million of his own money</a> into the film, which was then considered one of the most expensive movies ever made. When critics saw it, they also gave it the distinction of being one of the worst movies ever made.<div type="image" title="waterworld" height="525" width="800" msid="111413431" hostid="261"></div>But "Horizon" was supposed to be different. The Oscar-winner had been riding high off the success of his hit TV show, "Yellowstone." Surely its tens of millions of fans would follow Costner to theaters to watch him in another Western, one he directed this time. Right?At least on opening weekend, that's not what happened. Audiences instead spent their cash on sure things, like sequels or stories from existing IP. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-out-2-box-office-pixar-disney-numbers-analysis-2024-6">"Inside Out 2"</a> led the domestic box office for a third straight weekend and has now <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl3638199041/?ref_=bo_hm_RECENT_WEEKEND_WIDGET_1">grossed over $1 billion worldwide</a>, making it the first movie to do so since last summer's "Barbie." In second was "A Quiet Place: Day One," a prequel in the popular thriller franchise, which took in an impressive <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl545096449/?ref_=bo_hm_RECENT_WEEKEND_WIDGET_2">$53 million domestically</a>, making it the biggest opening ever for the franchise.<h2 id="3c63a0fd-c1fa-468e-8f5e-26b555b8e5bf">The "Yellowstone" fans weren't enough</h2><div type="image" title="yellowstone kevin costner" height="932" width="1400" msid="111413434" hostid="261"></div>Though Costner had been crafting a story about the exploration of the American West for decades, it wasn't until he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viewers-dont-care-about-kevin-costners-character-john-dutton-yellowstone-2023-9">played John Dutton in "Yellowstone"</a> that "Horizon" finally became a reality. And it was that fandom that Warner Bros. hoped would come to theaters for "Horizon," bringing box-office glory.The Paramount+ series was the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.paramount.com/news/the-audiences-behind-yellowstones-success">most-watched cable series</a> in 2018 and 2019; it went on to score close to <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/yellowstone-ratings-viewers-peacock-cbs-1235739208/">seven million viewers in its broadcast debut on CBS</a> in the fall of 2023. The conventional thinking among box-office trackers was that "Yellowstone" fans would be the core audience to come out to support "Horizon," hopefully leading to a $15 million to $20 million opening.Despite the film's poor reception from critics at its Cannes Film Festival world premiere and its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/horizon_an_american_saga_chapter_1">40% Rotten Tomatoes score,</a> the thinking was that Costner's core audience would come through despite a few bad reviews (the movie has a 71% audience score, after all).And they did — sort of. Warner Bros.' weekly box-office report revealed that the top five theaters that were major earners for "Horizon" were in regions of the country where "Yellowstone" is popular and cowboys still roam: Utah (where the "Horizon" franchise was shot), Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma.So, while Costner and WB were successful in marketing the movie, it wasn't enough. Though the "Yellowstone" fans are mighty, "Horizon" needed more manpower to compete with established draws like "Inside Out 2" and "A Quiet Place: Day One."<h2 id="dce79d3f-20cd-474c-b2e5-ebeffa730b3b">Costner isn't as prominent in the 3-hour movie as marketing would suggest</h2><div type="image" title="Kevin Costner in a cowboy hat" height="1000" width="1500" msid="111413433" hostid="261"></div>Even though "Horizon" needed more than just "Yellowstone" die-hards to win at the box office, that core audience may not have been entirely satisfied, either.Despite being the face of the franchise and its star, Kevin Costner isn't actually in a lot of "Horizon." In fact, he doesn't show up until an hour into the movie and is rarely seen afterward. As Hayes Ellison, a rustler on the run after killing a man, the movie occasionally checks in on how he's doing, but most of it revolves around Native Americans attacking a settlement called Horizon, the soldiers at a nearby Army post, and a wagon train traveling to Horizon.The movie's lack of Costner is a major flaw. Unlike on TV, where teasing the eventual appearance of a star will draw audiences back for the next episode, it's tougher for movies to take that approach when viewers must wait more than a week — usually months or even years — for the next installment. And even though the next "Horizon" movie comes to theaters in August, who's to say audiences will come back? Especially if they aren't certain their star will be on screen for most of the movie.<h2 id="7319bc12-0cc5-49c7-a51b-26d5858c4fb6">Self-financed auteur projects rarely deliver</h2><div type="image" title="Kevin Costner directing next to a monitor" height="4000" width="6000" msid="111413435" hostid="261"></div>The shaky start for Costner's passion project could go one of two ways. While there are a few times in film history when a director put their own money into a film and reaped huge rewards (see: George Lucas' "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ"), most of the time, directors who self-finance never see that money back — just ask <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/03/01/movies/film-welles-s-othello-made-chaos-into-an-art-form.html">Orson Welles</a> or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vulture.com/article/is-francis-ford-coppola-megalopolis-doomed.html">Francis Ford Coppola</a>.It's too soon to say if that will happen to Costner (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2020/07/28/waterworld-starring-kevin-costner-was-the-biggest-box-office-bomb-that-wasnt/ ">even "Waterworld" broke even</a> — though it took years), but he is on the hook for the film franchise, and he's likely in deeper than the $38 million price tag that's been previously reported.According to <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/kevin-costner-horizon-stakes-box-office-career-1236056644/">Variety</a>, Costner and his investors are paying for the "Horizon" marketing, a spend that's around $30 million. Warner Bros. is only taking 8% of the movie's box office grosses. That means if the movie can rebound, the star will take a substantial share of the grosses. If it doesn't, he'll have to deal with the losses.That could hurt the franchise down the line.Though "Horizon: Chapter 2" is set for an August 16 release and "Chapter 3" has begun principal photography for a May 2024 release, "Chapter 4" is still only in development. Whether Costner will ultimately be able to complete his four-part saga could very well become a saga of its own.

Let's agree on a few things before we get into it:Yes, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-who-tracks-elon-musk-jet-launching-own-website-2023-2">flight information is public</a>, but it's not particularly easy for someone unfamiliar with aviation to find it. Removing the trackers from social media adds a layer of friction that could probably stop some potential stalkers or other people seeking to harm these celebrities.Yes, these <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jet-tracking-meta-ban-jack-sweeney-faith-social-media-2024-10">flight tracker accounts existed on Threads</a> for months until suddenly — with apparently no warning or communication from Meta — they got canned.Yes, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-superpac-donations-politics-2024-10">Musk and Donald Trump are out campaigning for a presidential election</a>. This makes their movements more newsworthy than, say, Kylie Jenner's or Kim Kardashian's. Knowing which states a candidate and his megadonor are visiting has a credible public benefit.<h2 id="fbc87856-727c-40d1-8d7a-cd2ff9e134a8">What is Meta's reason for banning the accounts?</h2>Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, gave a statement to Business Insider about the suspensions: "Given the risk of physical harm to individuals, and in keeping with the independent Oversight Board's recommendation, we've disabled these accounts for violating our privacy policy."Meta is pointing to an Oversight Board <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.oversightboard.com/decision/pao-2021-01/">recommendation</a> from 2021 about posts with people's home address information. The board, which says it provides "an independent check on Meta's content moderation," recommended generally banning posts that exposed residential information — even if that information was publicly available.For most private citizens, this seems reasonable. My home address is technically in the public record, but I don't want people posting it on Facebook. You probably feel the same about your own address.The board spells out the difference between information being in the public record and information being posted on social media:You can see what Meta is doing here: It's applying the logic about posting the home address of a normal citizen and expanding it to the private jet data of famous people. This isn't exactly apples-to-apples, but I don't think it's completely unreasonable.That's different from many of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-x-twitter-account-suspensions-rising-2024-9">Musk's content-moderation decisions</a>, which feel more slapdash and based on his own whims.<h2 id="163b65b9-3888-4951-bb37-ff5adc63a9bf">Imagine this is about Kim and Taylor, not Elon</h2>But forget about Elon for a minute.Instead, imagine this was about Swift and Kardashian, celebs who have faced numerous <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-vienna-concert-explosives-detonators-chemicals-knives-found-isis-2024-8">credible security threats</a>. Kardashian has talked about how she takes care not to post her location when she's traveling after a horrific armed robbery in 2016. It feels reasonable that Meta would apply the 2021 Oversight Board recommendation about how some technically public information shouldn't be allowed if it creates a risk of harm.But why now? Why is Meta reaching back to a 2021 recommendation and applying it now to flight information? Meta didn't respond to a request for comment on whether a specific incident triggered these suspensions.It certainly does feel like a celebrity might have personally complained to Meta. Or maybe Meta just wants to cater to the needs of some of its biggest celebrity posters, like Swift and Jenner. Or maybe <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</a> just noticed his own jet-tracking account, got annoyed, went into "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-everyone-in-tech-talking-founder-mode-paul-graham-chesky-2024-9">founder mode</a>," and got the trackers shut down.Ultimately, I think there's a good argument that someone's safety trumps the dissemination of public information. They founded the AR/VR club at Harvard and quickly got to work on real-world projects during their sophomore year. They are now juniors."We lived in the science and engineering building for like an entire summer and just built random projects," Ardafiyo said."The first one was the flamethrower, but then we built an electric skateboard that you can control with your fingers," Ardafiyo said. "We built a tentacle, like a robotic tentacle, that was like four feet long and could move through the air."It was through the AR/VR club that they gained access to the Meta glasses. I didn't understand how the whole comics business works, and working with an artist, until later on in my career.I was chronically online as a teenager, so I promoted my work on Wattpad. I was driving a lot of traffic from Instagram to my Wattpad, and it got 100,000 reads, which at the time for me was pretty great. I was like, "Wow, I'm getting a lot of feedback." I went ahead and finished that novel, packaged it, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author-ana-huang-self-publishing-books-like-running-small-business-2024-10">self-published</a> it when I was 17.I think the hardest part about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-book-30-days-tips">writing novels</a> or doing any creative project is that the first time you do it, it's super hard. "Icarus Rising" was also going viral, and it enabled me to get my first serialization deal for "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.voyce.me/series/god-game">God Game,"</a> which is still running.From there, I was able to connect with Webtoon using my portfolio and get "Just A Goblin" off the ground. That was just the start of my partnership with Webtoon. If I don't hit these projections over the next five years, I will go back to my job that I promised I would do after college to make back that college tuition."I was just convincing them that I wouldn't be out of money and that I'd be OK. My thought was: "What if I turn 40 and I'm still doing this finance job, and I never took a chance on myself and then I died one day? What a tragedy. Why don't I just take my risk now?" And that's when I took a jump, and then I had to convince my parents.My entire life they've known that this is my calling. They see everything I'm doing and my passion. The question for them always was, "When is he going to do it?"

And I think that's what he's doing," she said of Jassy.Jassy announced the mailbox and several other measures on Monday — including having fewer managers and cutting back on meetings. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Kanny is a startup that uses character assessments to improve the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/multiple-job-interviews-a-pain-but-also-benefit-workers-2024-8">hiring processes</a> for employers.</li><li>Character is more crucial than skills, but it's often hard to evaluate, Kanny's CEO told BI.</li></ul>One area of my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finding-job-awful-right-now-drop-in-openings-tough-search-2024-9">work</a> where I appear to be better than others is remaining humble.That's according to a survey of some colleagues who rated me on six traits.My coworkers — geniuses, all — made the evaluation using a tool from the startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.kanny.com/">Kanny</a>, which aims to improve hiring by assessing what it calls a job candidate's work character."The most important thing when hiring is not hard or soft skills or even expertise. It is character," Kanny CEO and cofounder Sean Vassilaros told me. "It's also the most important or most difficult thing to ascertain."He said Kanny is trying to return some power to the employer — though that may seem counterintuitive to many job seekers, for whom it can feel like bosses hold all of the proverbial cards. Bosses can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-hard-to-find-job-us-though-unemployment-low-2024-2">ghost candidates</a> — or sometimes list <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-job-listings-rampant-labor-market-employment-hiring-process-difficult-2024-5">fake jobs</a> — and they can put people through round after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-looking-for-jobs-enduring-many-rounds-of-interviews-2024-7">round of interviews</a>.Yet the control that job seekers have, Vassilaros said, is in shaping the narrative of who they are."How many times have you heard the story of, 'Hey, I hired this person. They knocked my socks off in the interview,'" he said. And then "'they turned out to be an absolute disaster.'"Vassilaros said that because workers control their résumé, references, social media presence, and LinkedIn profile, it can be difficult for would-be employers to suss out a sus applicant."The entire hiring process is curated by the candidate," he said. "It's all packaged up in this sales job to hand to you."It's of course reasonable that job seekers would seek to present themselves in the best light, Vassilaros said. The trouble is that when that happens, it often leaves those conducting an interview without a way to get "really good, keen insights.""I, for sure, can't ask your references," he said. "These are your champions, as they should be."<h2 id="d3ff94a0-902b-4c70-a34c-0b99b67ffc75">The reviews are in</h2>I signed up for Kanny, albeit with some trepidation, using my LinkedIn login. That's how Kanny knew who I was and found coworkers. They could have been former colleagues or people I work with now. Someone requesting a review can also limit the ask to former coworkers.Within a day or two of completing my sign-up, I received a few texts and emails from people, leery of a scam, asking whether I actually wanted their feedback on my character. I assured them it was legit and that I would Venmo them in exchange for a favorable review (kidding).Vassilaros said worries about whether the request is valid is one reason the company encourages people to let current and former colleagues know the request is legitimate. Kanny offers templates for email, text, and LinkedIn messages. Users must opt in to see whether and how others have reviewed them.Reviewers rate someone on six criteria: integrity, accountability, respect, humility (ahem), confidence, and grit.A former boss told me it only took a minute or so to complete. That's partly because reviewers move a slider to the left or right. There isn't a field for a reviewer to enter open text.That's by design, Vassilaros said. The idea is to have everyone marked on the same scale. It's a way of making subjective data more objective, he said, and less reliant on sentiment."They can't be like, 'This guy stole my lunch,'" he said. "We don't want that information."The algorithm considers what Vassilaros calls "work relationship" information, including how closely, how long — and how long ago — you worked with someone. Scoring is also set so that if certain reviewers are too negative or too positive, their impact is blunted."This is not meant to tank or to hurt anyone. This is meant, literally, to reward but also give you information on how to develop and get better," he said.Reviewers are anonymous — and responses are only shown in aggregate though it takes at least five reviews before Kanny will generate a report.I only heard from a handful of people, and I'm not sure how many colleagues actually evaluated my character traits. Given my above-average score in some areas, I'd imagine it was only a handful of true believers.Once I logged in to Kanny's website, I could see my ratings on a dashboard and how I compared with other Kanny users —hence my not-so-humble-bragging about my humility. And if I'm honest, my results in that category were only a tiny bit above the average.It was fun to see my scores from mystery colleagues. Yet more important, it struck me that anytime you can offer employers better insights into how a job seekers' colleagues regard them, it could be a notable step toward making the hiring process feel more humane.Users like me can ask others to review them; by the end of the year, Vassilaros said, Kanny plans to open up the tool to corporate customers. That way, an employer could request that an applicant go through the Kanny process and get ratings.He said he plans to integrate Kanny into the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-your-resume-gets-rejected-job-search-bots-people-ats-2024-5">applicant-tracking systems</a> most large employers use to help manage their hiring process.Vassilaros said a recruiter needing to sort through 1,000 applicants for a role might instantly whittle it down to 20 by ranking according to these character snapshots.From there, a recruiter could dig into a person's report to learn about an applicant's strengths and weaknesses.Yet, Vassilaros said, a low score in a particular category might not be a dealbreaker.He offered the example of a software developer who got high marks for accountability and integrity but came in lower on respect. That suggests he might not work well with others, Vassilaros said. "That may be acceptable for that role," he said.<h2 id="8e895964-3bc8-4993-8695-9a4e94228f26">Looking at character in other ways</h2>Kyle Samuels, founder and CEO of the executive search firm Creative Talent Endeavors, told me that understanding an organization's character is crucial when hiring. A company like REI or Patagonia, he said, might focus on helping employees shine, whereas an investment bank might value a more competitive, self-driven worker.Samuels said that an applicant's character can be revealed throughout the hiring process. What is a person's demeanor? Does the candidate show up on time? Is the job seeker rude to his assistant?"Those are things sometimes that have stopped me from even having an interview with a candidate," he said.Samuels has also seen job seekers pass along proprietary information from their current employer to try to impress a prospective boss. That can be a red flag, Samuels said."There are certain companies who will clutch their pearls at that. And there are other companies saying, 'So, you're bringing over your client list, right?'" he said.In some industries, killing it at work might allow individuals with less favorable character traits to thrive, he said. You might be a jerk, Samuels said, but if you brought in $4 million in sales this quarter, an employer might be willing to overlook gaps in character.Samuels said a tool that gets at a candidate's character might be most helpful for lower-level roles, where the interview process is often less extensive than for a senior position.<h2 id="e35ebf96-a7dc-4a90-a51d-86d4132b41d0">Defining character can be messy</h2>Rebecca Arnold, founder of Root Coaching &amp; Consulting, told me that she's not sure that character assessments based on someone's LinkedIn connections would eliminate the type of bias that is often part of a job seeker's references."You probably don't have thousands of enemies in your LinkedIn network," she quipped.Arnold also said that broad terms like respect and integrity can be open to interpretation.Getting it right is important but often difficult for employers, she said."They often only find whether someone is really strong in these characteristics or weak after they've been hired," Arnold said, adding that bringing in people who fall short around character can hurt an organization's culture.Vassilaros, from Kanny, said that the company has technology that can find people you've worked with who might not be connections on LinkedIn. He also said the company tries to define the attributes reviewers use so that the terms are specific to work.Vassilaros added that his experience running other companies made it clear to him how hard it is to determine a candidate's character before making a hire."I was probably batting about a 60% success rate," he said.Vassilaros said his goal is to make character in the workplace a bigger focus."That should drive the conversation," he said.Do you have something to share about what you're seeing in the workplace or in your job search? I tried a tool that lets your coworkers rate your character. The startup behind it wants employers to use it for hiring. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kent Davis, a retired pilot, shared his 40-year aviation career journey.</li><li>Davis started flying at 12, inspired by his pilot father and uncle.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kent Davis, a retired Air Canada pilot with more than 40 years of experience. It has been edited for length and clarity.I started flying when I was 12.My parents had a little cabin northwest of Montreal that we'd go to in the summer. A nearby air service company had four or five airplanes. I talked my dad into going and seeing if I could get a job.They said: "Yeah, sure. We can't pay you though, because you're underage."My job was fueling the airplanes, loading baggage, and whatever else. In return, the pilots taught me <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-just-became-commercial-pilot-training-regional-airline-2021-10">how to fly</a>. I spent three summers working there and accumulated about 30 hours of flying time.My father was my idol. He and my uncle were both pilots during World War II. My brother and sister were also pilots. Aviation is in the family.When I finished school, I went into the Royal Canadian Navy and did a tour there. Not as a pilot, though — I was in naval intelligence.When I got out of the Navy, I finished my pilot's license, and I flew for various companies. Most of them were small and underfunded, so they came and went.<h2 id="ca341142-37cd-4ecd-b0d4-141220b5f67e">A prime minister, movie stars, and royalty</h2>In 1972, I joined <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-canada-worker-quit-summer-flight-chaos-after-7-years-2022-9">Air Canada</a> and spent 33 years flying for them. During that time, I flew anybody and everybody. We had movie stars and royalty. I flew the Prime Minister of Canada a number of times during election campaigns.In 2005, I retired from Air Canada and was hired by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/life-of-prince-alwaleed-of-saudi-arabia-2015-6">Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal</a>, a Saudi prince based in Riyadh.He was a self-made billionaire. When I was there, he was the fourth-richest man in the world.<div type="image" title="Prince Al Waleed bin Talal is surrounded by men in suits." height="689" width="1024" msid="113495841" hostid="261" sizebytes="52466"></div>If you have never lived and worked with somebody who is that wealthy, you have no idea about how they spend their money. It was unbelievable.He owned a bunch of his own airplanes, including an Airbus A340 and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-deltas-boeing-767-economy-it-was-great-review-2022-9">Boeing 767</a>.When I got to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudia-arabia-establishing-new-airline-to-attract-tourists-riyadh-air-2023-3">Riyadh</a> and took my first flight on the A340, the prince insisted that the other airplane fly empty in case we had a mechanical problem. This would happen regularly.It was mind-boggling to see how much money could buy.When the prince's daughter got married, he said to her, "Okay, I'm going to give you one of my airplanes and the crew, and I want you to take it for as long as you want and have a honeymoon."They took the Boeing 767, an airplane that carried more than 200 passengers. With a crew of 12, his daughter and her husband spent more than a month flying all over the world.The crew very seldom dealt with the prince directly; there would usually be an intermediary. This changed during a flight to New York for a meeting he had with George W. Bush.The prince walked into the cockpit and gave everybody $5,000. He said: "Have a nice time while you're in New York."It was peanuts to him, but for us, it was a lot of money.After leaving Riyadh in 2006, I worked for a few different companies, including a two-year stint with Air India.In 2013, I was offered a job in the Republic of Georgia, flying a Twin Otter aircraft. It was a very versatile and excellent airplane for what we used it for.We flew the country's president, his family, and other government personnel into and out of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. There were very few strips, so we used fields and roads to land and take off.I'm mostly retired now, except for some consulting work with my company, Trans Global Aviation Solutions.The best thing about the career is the career itself. It was very rewarding — and there was never a dull moment.

Edie Falco doesn't sweat the small stuff, but she wasn't always that way.A few years before she catapulted to fame as everyone's favorite mob wife, Carmela, on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sopranos-cast-photos-where-are-they-now-2021-9">"The Sopranos,"</a> the acclaimed HBO drama about a mafioso attempting to balance his family and criminal life, Falco had another role she was eager for people to see. In 1997, she shot the pilot for the first attempt at a "Fargo" TV spinoff that ultimately didn't get picked up by the network.Falco named the scrapped "Fargo" series, which finally aired as a one-off TV movie in 2003, at the peak of her Carmela fame, as the one role she wishes people talked about more."This was long before I was so chill about whatever happens with shows. I was like, I want this to go," Falco tells Business Insider.Over 25 years later, she's not hanging on to any regrets. She's learned there's usually a silver lining."I was very proud of that, but, of course, had that gone forward, I wouldn't have been able to do 'The Sopranos,'" Falco recalls. "So all this stuff works out the way it's supposed to."After decades in the business, Falco has perfected the ability to let scrapped pilots and failed movie auditions roll off her back. She partly credits it to being at a stage in her career where there are "fewer ramifications" if she gets a job or doesn't, compared to when she was a younger actor struggling to break through. It's also partly due to a shift in mindset to avoid setting herself up for "a lot of turbulence and disappointment.""You just don't know. So do what's in front of you and move on," Falco says. "It's not like my joy in the experience is contingent upon how well the movie does."Now a well-established actor, Falco is more often than not in the position of being approached for roles rather than going out for auditions. That was the case with her latest film, the indie comedy "I'll Be Right There."<div type="image" title="Edie Falco in I'll Be Right There" height="795" width="1920" msid="113548345" hostid="261" sizebytes="54184"></div>Falco plays Wanda, a divorced mom who is equally dissatisfied with her long-term boyfriend and the younger woman she's cheating on him with. She's much more focused on trying to keep her beloved family (including her troubled son, pregnant daughter, and hypochondriac mother, who all depend on her) from falling apart.The film's director, Brendan Walsh, had previously worked with Falco on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-reveal-the-least-and-most-accurate-medical-shows-2019-12">"Nurse Jackie,"</a> another one of her best-known and most acclaimed roles, and sent her the script to see if she'd be interested.Falco was immediately drawn to Wanda, a character who cherishes her role as a mom above all else. Do they just sort of groan when they see it? There are a surprising number of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/discover/carmela-and-furio">edits on TikTok</a> involving your character Carmela and Furio, the enforcer who harbored a secret love for your character, his boss' wife…I'm sure they do. And I don't know how quickly they jump out to say, 'Oh, that's my mom.' I think they're teenagers and they want their own identity before they become the daughter of Carmela or whatever.That's so funny. I haven't done any social media so I don't know anything about what you're talking about. I think that's hysterical.Recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/timeimmemorial_/status/1831850470631162248">there was a meme going around</a> about this one NFL player, and somebody said he looked like the love child the two of them would've had.That's really funny. Oh my God. That's really funny.Some people were really rooting for Carmela and Furio, or at least for Carmela to find happiness in the end.Of course, but I think she found happiness. I think she was with the guy she loved. That's moving forward at Prime Video now, is that right?Yes, I think so.Is that one that you ever expected to return to? The original show left Jackie on kind of an extreme cliffhanger…I did not frankly see it coming, but it was, I guess, a number of years ago now when I was first approached about it. I was sort of shocked, but I was like, of course, I would do that. It'd be great fun.I loved the cast and crew. It was to die for. The workday was calm and loving and funny. Everybody there was someone I trusted and knew and many of whom I had long histories with, having worked on other things with them. So it's a thrill to think that that could be brought back to life one way or another with some of the same crew and actors or whatever.It's still too early to know exactly where we are with it, but I'm excited at the prospect. I haven't been told anything about it. You know as much as I do.<h2>On playing Pete Davidson's mom</h2><div type="image" title="Edie Falco and Pete Davidson in &quot;Bupkis&quot; season 1 episode 5" height="3792" width="5688" msid="113548341" hostid="261" sizebytes="3359420"></div>Another more recent TV project for you was "Bupkis," which had such a phenomenal cast. How was it working so closely with the creator, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pete-davidson-regrets-buying-staten-island-ferry-colin-jost-2023-6">Pete Davidson</a>?He's charming as heck, and I've always gotten a kick out of him watching him on "SNL" and other appearances.I can't say we travel in the same circles. So I certainly knew who he was, but the fact that he knew who I was was like, what? He wants what now? I somehow thought someone had made some terrible mistake, but apparently, it was me that he wanted to play his mom. It was crazy.It was one of those pinch-me moments sitting on a director's chair next to Joe Pesci and it was just crazy. Pete — funny, delightful, charming as all get out — and yeah, I had great fun.Again, not the kind of thing...I would've expected, but anyway, I was very happy to do it.Does that happen very often now, where somebody approaches your team, and they're like, I want Edie Falco to play this specific role?It does. It's kind of what happens these days and I've been doing it long enough that people have an idea of what they think I'm capable of. So they will think either I'm right for something or I'm not.So stuff comes my way where I'm thinking, God, what a blessing that this person doesn't know me, but they would think of me for this character. That's crazy, but of course, I'll do it. I mean, how exciting.For <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-shows-cancelled-ending-this-year-2024-3">"Bupkis,"</a> how did you feel when you learned it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/pete-davidson-bupkis-season-2-peacock-canceled-1235948542/">wouldn't move forward for a second season</a> after all, despite the initial renewal?It's the way life goes. It is, and it isn't. And I wasn't sitting by the phone waiting for my call time. It's a crazy business, and again, you do the thing, and you move on and the fun was had while we did it.I never knew when it was going to come out. I didn't even know there wasn't a second season until I found out there was. So I'm really pretty easygoing around all that stuff. You have to be.There was a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tmz.com/2024/04/06/pete-davidson-give-bonus-bupkis-staff-cancelation/">rumor</a> that Pete gave some of the people working on the show a parting gift when he nixed the second season. Do you know anything about that?Now I'm pissed off. [laughs] No, no, I got nothing. I don't know anything about it. I'm afraid to find out what that was. Do we know?I think it was money.How sweet.<h2>On feeling 'protective' of Hillary Clinton</h2><div type="image" title="Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton" height="822" width="1030" msid="113548352" hostid="261" sizebytes="13134"></div>You were so incredible as Hillary Clinton on "Impeachment: American Crime Story." When it came out, you <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/10/18/edie-falco-hillary-clinton-impeachment-american-crime-story/8425218002/">said</a> you had mixed feelings about taking on that role. How is that process for you when you're deciding if you're going to play a real person, especially one that you know in a way?I tend not to like to play real people. It's a different job. These people are alive or were alive, and people who knew them are alive. And I don't want it to be like, 'Oh, she doesn't sound like that,' or 'She would never have worn those shoes' or whatever. So, I tend to prefer to create a character.But I am such a fan of Hillary's and have been for years, and I've done campaigning stuff for her and fundraisers and stuff. I felt a little bit protective of her and the fact that I really didn't want them to slam her. And so when I read it, I wanted to make sure that's not what was going to happen.So yeah, that was a rough one, but I liked the whole Ryan Murphy franchise and I thought it would be fun to work within it. And so for that reason, I was very happy.Have you and Hillary crossed paths since the show aired?I'm sort of a politically active individual, so more than half of my emails are like, "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-tim-walz-first-interview-cnn-takeaways-2024-8">Kamala and Walz</a> are going to be in your town," or whatever. And one of the emails I got while I was shooting "Impeachment" was, "Hi Edie, it's Hillary. I'm asking you to…" And I was like, oh my God, she must know that I'm —! Anyway, it was just one of those mass emails, but I had a moment of panic.Like she was personally emailing you to be like, "Why are you doing this, Edie?"Yeah. Like, why wouldn't you just say no?<h2>On her 'Avatar' faux pas and genre films</h2><div type="image" title="Edie Falco shaking Quaritch's hand" height="1065" width="2880" msid="113548344" hostid="261" sizebytes="82490"></div>Many of your best-known roles are on TV, but you've also been in many movies, like the latest "Avatar" movie. I thought it was so funny when you were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://variety.com/2022/film/news/edie-falco-shot-avatar-2-four-years-before-release-1235465720/">surprised,</a> during a 2022 interview, that it hadn't come out already. That got a ton of pickup in the press.I got in a lot of trouble about that. I felt terrible. What I was trying to say is, for me, the joy is in the making of it. And then what happens after that? I never know. I have made movies I still don't know if they came out. They may have come out and done very well; I just don't know. I just don't keep track of that stuff unless I'm asked to either do press or show up at a screening. I did the movie years ago, and I've forgotten about it. That's kind of what I meant, that I'm not tuned into what goes on in the world of this industry. Anyway, I think it came across a different way, but I was just saying that I'm a bit of a dolt when it comes to the journey that my films and TV go on when I'm at home. It didn't go over well."Avatar," being sci-fi, is probably your most genre project so far. Is there any other genre you've yet to do that you'd be interested in exploring?An action film would be fun to be able to be a bad guy or something. I can be a good bad guy. It's very cathartic for one's soul when you're trying to spend your day being nice to everyone, like your teenage children, stuff like that. It's nice to have a place to get it out of your system. But if it's supposed to happen, it'll happen.
