You could actually buy this thing and not feel like you've overspent. The metal frame's flat edges and the flat glass panels lend classic sophistication and maturity to the <a href="https://shop-links.co/1749646784108549193" target="_blank">Galaxy Z Flip 3</a> than phones with curvier designs. <br /><br />Folded up, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is no larger or thicker than an average men's folding wallet, and it feels like an unusually heavy wallet in pockets (unless your wallet has a coin purse full of coins). Unfolded, it looks no different to a normal phone, albeit one with a narrower screen than is typical.<br /><br />One of the <a href="https://shop-links.co/1749646784108549193" target="_blank">Galaxy Z Flip 3</a>'s party pieces is its hinge that can keep the phone folded and propped up at any angle. It brings a new kind of hands-free functionality that only Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series offer, and it's great for video calls. It can even be used like a tripod for taking photos to eliminate hand wobble. I would take a high refresh rate over a 1440p screen any day. <br /><br />Strangely, the screen is a dust magnet compared to phones with solid glass slabs, which is somewhat unsettling considering the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is not dust resistant. I haven't faced any issues with dust affecting the hinge mechanism, but I've only been using the phone for a couple weeks. While it's not officially dust resistant, Samsung says the hinge design is dust repellent. The majority of high-end phones I test can easily last a day with the same kind of usage without any concern. It's possible to get the price down to $1,000 on Samsung's website with eligible trade-ins, but the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a different foldable animal altogether. For normal usage, the exterior screen is very cramped, and the main screen is cumbersomely large. It's ideal, however, if you've always wished you could carry around a compact tablet instead of a phone. <br /><br />Otherwise, if you're put off by the compromises needed to own a foldable phone at the moment, consider good ol' fashioned slab phones. The case is good for storing the accessories but it won't fit the entire tripod, light, and microphone.</p><p>The rig's quality is noticeable as soon as you take it out of the box. Everything from the movable legs to the smartphone mount all feels capable of lasting a long time. I've used the rig for almost two months and it still functions just as well as it did when I unboxed it. There are some minor scuffs just from day-to-day use but nothing that's concerning enough to make me worry about its long-term durability. </p><h2><strong>Lights, camera, action</strong></h2><p><div type="image" title="FitnessStream2" height="760" width="1013" msid="75834069" hostid="261"></div></p><p>One of <a href="https://joby.com/us-en/gorillapod-mobile-vlogging-kit-jb01645-bww/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">the rig's</a> best features is how stable it remains, even when I'm jumping around my living room, giving it every opportunity to topple over. It's often set up in some precarious position (I've resorted to putting the tripod on top of an upside-down laundry basket that's placed on my kitchen garbage can) and yet, it stays in place. This is thanks in part to both the gummy, rubberized nubs on the tripod legs, as well as its sturdy construction.</p><p>Of course, setting it up correctly also goes a long way in getting a reliable shot. This means bending and situating each leg so as to create a solid base while also keeping in mind how level the camera is. I use predetermined cues in my living room to initially line the shot up and then hone it in by making use of the phone mount's ability to vertically and horizontally swivel. Once I've found the correct shot, two knobs secure the phone's position firmly in place.<strong> </strong></p><p>The tripod's pliability also makes it easy to set up in a variety of ways. You don't have to set it on a flat surface for it to work, you can also wrap the legs around a pole, create a sort of cradle for your hand, or lean it against a wall.<strong> </strong></p><p>Setting up the microphone is easy to do — even after the shot is set. After screwing in one of the accessory arms and attaching the microphone to it, an included audio cable (which, thankfully, comes with a lightning port adapter for iPhones) plugs into both the microphone and the smartphone. I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile but I could still recognize clearer sound in my streams when using the mic — even if it was minimal.<strong> </strong></p><p>The included Beamo light secures onto a second accessory arm, though I didn't need to use it as much based on the nature of my streams. Not only do they take place in the afternoon but I'm also shooting directly into a light source (i.e. my windows), which isn't exactly preferred. </p><p>Don't get me wrong, using an LED light, even in daytime, can help improve the lighting of any stream but I just didn't feel as though mine required it. I use this vlogging kit to livestream my weekly workout series on Instagram — it's not cheap at $200, but it delivers steady shots, clear audio, and proper lighting

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We can review new devices when they're first launched, and their performance can generally be predicted from their specs. But specs only tell part of the story.</p><p>Samsung's latest flagship device, the Galaxy S6, has been out for about a month and a half, and it's one of the most highly rated phones out there. Most consider it to be the best Android phone in the world.</p><p>Here's what it's actually like to use from a real life owner's perspective.</p><p><strong>Design</strong></p><p>Samsung has refreshed its design philosophy from tacky fake chrome edges and plastic/faux-leather textures on previous Galaxy phones to a more refined, sophisticated glass and metal build for the Galaxy S6. I got the white version, which looks and feels premium and does a much better job at justifying its $650 price tag than the previous phones that felt like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chocolate-kinder-surprise-eggs-toys-2015-4">toys inside Kinder Eggs</a>.</p><p>But now that the S6 has sleek, smooth aluminum edges, it feels like it wants to slip out of my hands on a one-way trip to a hard floor. So how do you remedy that? With a cheap plastic $20 case that hides any indication that your S6 is made with premium materials, or that it's an S6 at all since most Galaxy phones look pretty similar from the front.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Performance</strong></p><p>Samsung packed some pretty powerful hardware into the S6, and it feels like it for the most part. Performance is largely quick and smooth, animations rarely stutter, and I can switch between apps and scroll down contact lists, and websites pretty smoothly.</p><p>Occasionally, however, I'll wake my phone from sleep and it won't be able to unlock for about four to five seconds because of some sort of bottleneck with the hardware. That might not sound like much, but it's not something you'd expect from a brand new phone with some of the most powerful specs commercially available that's just stripped you of $650 or more.</p><p>It's also not very good for super fast smartphone typists as the S6 lags behind what you're typing, especially when auto-correcting or guessing what you're typing, which it does terribly anyway. I would suggest immediately downloading an alternative, like the Google Keyboard.</p><p>The fingerprint sensor is excellent and you no longer have any excuse to leave your phone without some sort of security measure because entering the passcode was too cumbersome. It registers my thumb prints quickly and accurately and I can get to my apps just as easily as swiping the lock screen to unlock it. Eventually, I'll be able to use the fingerprint sensor with Samsung Pay, Samsung's answer to Apple Pay that launches this summer.</p><p><strong>Samsung's Android</strong></p><p>Think of Android as a basic salad and Samsung as a chef. TouchWiz is the extra software Samsung uses to "skin" the basic version of Android made by Google. In years past, TouchWiz was a heavy hodgepodge of toppings added by a Samsung chef that ruined a perfectly good Android salad into an unrecognizable, cluttered mess.</p><p>Samsung adds its TouchWiz skin over Android to differentiate itself from other Android phones, but it was too cartoony and cluttered in the past. For the S6, it's dialed down its latest version of TouchWiz to look more sophisticated and less cluttered.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>You'll still find silly traces like "Wi-Fi Connected to Network XYZ" banner in the notification shade, which is completely unnecessary and will drive notification perfectionists mad because you can't swipe it away like you do with other notifications. In typical TouchWiz fashion, there's no way to remove it, either.</p><p>Most Samsung apps can be disabled, but some keep running alongside Android to run the TouchWiz interface, which uses up the phone's resources and slows it down. Overall, it's a step in the right direction, but I still prefer Google's basic version of Android.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Display</strong></p><p>The S6 has the sharpest display there is on a smartphone at the moment, and it looks gorgeous. It's pleasingly bright and one of the only TouchWiz features I like lets you change the color scheme for a natural, warmer, cooler, or colorful display.</p><p><strong>Battery</strong></p><p>This one isn't Samsung's fault.</p><p>I experienced the same questionable battery life that many Galaxy S6 owners were reporting. Since I was getting only slightly better battery life than with my old Nexus 5, I was about to put the S6 back in its box and ship it back to wherever it came from.</p><p>Before I did that, I tried one last thing. I switched off Google Now, Google's digital assistant, and my battery life skyrocketed to last me about 36 hours on a single charge with relatively decent usage, including music streaming. I charge it every night, but I usually have around 50% battery left before I go to bed.</p><p>Google Now used to periodically activate my GPS antenna to gather my location and it forced my phone to process the information for the Google Now updates. I somewhat miss Google Now, but not that much, and it's a problem I'd likely experience with any smartphone.</p><p><strong>Camera</strong></p><p>The S6 takes fantastic pictures. The camera app can be pulled up quickly enough with a double tap of the home button and I've rarely missed a moment I wanted to capture. It offers myriad options like panorama, slow or fast motion, selective focus, and pro mode (for more DSLR-style control over your shots) in a convenient menu when you swipe right.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There's a "Virtual shot" mode that takes multiple pictures around a still object to create a cool surrounding effect, but it's mostly for novelty and has few uses because it's difficult to take stable surround shots without some sort of camera tripod.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>I wish I didn't have to use a grippy plastic rubber case with the S6 because it mutes the newfound beauty of Galaxy smartphones, but I don't want to drop it and potentially shatter the screen or dent the metal edges, either.</p><p>Samsung could have kept using plastic for its phones and still had a premium design. Take my old Nexus 5, for example, it wasn't quite as "pretty" as the S6 since it was made of plastic, but it's still one of the best looking and best feeling phones I've ever owned. And it absorbed drops like a tank.</p><p>Overall, the Galaxy S6 is a great phone despite Samsung's insistence to keep its heavy TouchWiz layer that helps slows everything down. To be fair, it's been dialed back enough that it's not too offensive, and the slowdowns are quite rare. But all they’ve won so far is a horde of indifferent consumers. As a result, staff and investor morale has taken a beating – many insiders are complaining about the dearth of flexibility and death of innovation at Microsoft.<br />
 <br /> Microsoft finds itself grappling with a new world where the personal computer, on which it built its empire, has no place. The chaos is apparent even in their flagship business – Windows. Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8 and <keyword id="1016196" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Windows-RT">Windows RT</keyword> are indistinguishable from each other and need to be merged into one cohesive Windows.<br />

<strong>But it has (nearly) endless ammo</strong><br />
However, it’s too early to write off Microsoft. Big companies don’t die easily. Apple has languished at the bottom of the industry for a decade and a half before it rose from the dead to become the world’s most valuable company.<br />
 <br /> Microsoft is still far above the rest with a market cap of $300 billion and cash piles of around $80 billion. Forbes contributor <keyword id="2076402" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mark-Fidelman">Mark Fidelman</keyword> has gone as far as to suggest that the company will be bigger than Apple in three years’ time, spurred on by the One Microsoft initiative, which will give users and developers an integrated experience across the phone, tablet, PC, console and the TV.<br />

<strong>The road ahead</strong><br />
There is a distinct possibility that Apple-quality smartphones and tablets will become commoditised. In such a scenario, software may once again dictate a user’s choice of hardware. However, Microsoft, or any other software company for that matter, will not be able to take advantage of such a shift.<br />
 <br /> Thanks to Apple and the <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword>, there are only two ways in which software proliferation may happen. One, it can be bundled together with the hardware to form an integrated system, which you can sell for a great profit, should it capture the public fancy. Two, it can be given away and opened up to the development community, which might well transform it into something bigger than you ever imagined. You can then try and figure out a way to churn out profit from it.<br />

Companies can no longer do a Windows and make profit by selling unified software for other companies’ hardware because code is now a commodity. Indian tech firms have risen to prominence on the strength of their coding skills, unlike the Far East’s hardware manufacturing titans. So this is a slow but definite turn of events of which they need to take very serious note.<br />

<strong>Trickle-up instead of trickle-down</strong><br /> Whatever Microsoft’s future might be, Indian homes and workplaces will have to extricate themselves from their dependency on Microsoft software and technology. So that when the world moves on to Android’s next delicacy, <keyword id="300053" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Google-Docs">Google Docs</keyword>, and whatever lies beyond that, we don’t find ourselves stuck in 1995. So that when kids in the US build their own apps and hacking code to change the rules of their favourite games, we, too, can pursue a national pastime other than Solitaire.<br />

Change has to start from schools, colleges, institutes and offices. The process has begun, but not as a result of conscious effort; therefore, only a few are aware of it. On the education front, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aakash_2">Aakash 2</a>, the much-publicised and subsidised tablet for students, operates on Android 4.0. In the industry, small firms which used to be known as software companies, have leveraged the transformation of the Internet and rebranded themselves as Web &amp; app development firms. PHP and other open source languages are becoming the mainstay of programming and coding in India, reducing the use of Microsoft’s .NET (which includes the once all-powerful Visual Basic) to just an option.<br />

<strong>How change will impact us</strong><br />
The Indian IT industry should be able to comprehend these changes and must adapt quickly. Organisations and individuals in the US and Europe, places from where India gets the bulk of its back-office processing work, have moved on to more nimble platforms, devices, operating systems and productivity tools. But Indian firms, with their service-focused mindset, are always late adopters of technology (that has been tried and tested in the West) and that puts them at the risk of getting pushed to the bottom in terms of innovation and growth.<br />
 <br /> The local bigwigs – TCS, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and others – should be deeply concerned about the continued lack of innovation in their offerings. Being a profit-making, back-office mammoth that deals with technology any grandfather in the US and the UK can understand is not exactly a creative way to avoid the Fat, Dumb and Happy syndrome in the business.<br />
 <br /> To achieve great success, businesses need to embrace great failures and take on immense capital risk. Subroto Bagchi, co-founder of <keyword id="6357902" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="MindTree">Mindtree</keyword>, cited the development of a new drug or auto model as examples of initiatives that require billions of dollars in R&amp;D just for the remote hope of hitting the mass market. That kind of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> doesn’t exist in India, especially in the early stages of product development.<br />
 <br /> TCS and Infosys have the capability to <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> this kind of money, and have the potential to grow and retain intellectual property, as part of an innovation-through-experimentation process. But they choose to stick to the cheap-and-cheerful, well-trodden paths. The truth is that Indian companies mostly reflect the overwhelming public mindset – that of risk aversion.<br />
 <br /> Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD of <keyword id="6358361" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Biocon">Biocon</keyword>, hit the nail right on the head in an attempt to answer if the next Apple or Google could be born in India:<br />

<em>Investors in India prefer predictable, imitative business models and me-too products, where they have the visibility of assured returns. Thus, Flipkart – which is modelled on <keyword id="6391410" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Amazon-com">Amazon.com</keyword> – has received a lot of investor interest in India. On the other hand, business models that are truly innovative and untested find no takers among the investor community here.</em><br />
 <br />
Innovation, investment and marketing are the three legs on which businesses are built. Remove one and the tripod comes crumbling down. Bereft of innovation, Microsoft risks turning into just any other company. Closer home, Infosys is making similar mistakes.<br />
 <br />
It’s time we stop ‘looking up’ to people, companies, governments or technology and start ‘looking beyond’ them.<br />
