Feeling comfortable at home.</p><p>Gone are the days of fussy decor, crisp-edged sofas with nary a butt-cheek indent, and all-white everything where even a roving cup of coffee posed a threat. Folks want to be at ease in 2024, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.luxuryoutlook.com/luxury-outlook-report-2024"><u>Sotheby's luxury outlook for the year ahead</u></a>, and no one has more spending power to make that a decadent reality in their homes than the wealthiest among us.</p><p>They're putting minibars in their bedrooms to make coffee or grab sparkling water, amping up spa-like amenities with cold plunge pools and infrared saunas, and adding plush seating to spaces including bathrooms, according to Sotheby's. After a damning few years that confined many to their own four walls, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glass-door-refrigerators-luxury-appliances-true-residential-subzero-2022-7"><u>luxury has been redefined from showy opulence</u></a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-status-symbols-popular-this-year-2024-1"><u>something a little more subdued</u></a>.</p><p>The quiet luxury trend dominated the TV show "Succession," from which a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyt-ultra-wealthy-buying-530-napkins-24500-sport-coats-2023-7"><u>$625 logo-less baseball cap by Loro Piana</u></a> became a cultural touchpoint; and continues to be a defining aesthetic of clothing and accessories today. "They want their bedroom to be comfortable. They want their kitchen to be comfortable. They want their dining room to be comfortable."</p><p>It's a desire that's achingly normal and relatable. Stilin added, "Design is becoming more thoughtful. People are taking more time to really think about how they want things to be."</p><h2><strong>'The more you can invest in yourself, the better'</strong></h2><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/winter-interior-design-home-renovation-gabellini-sheppard-2023-1"><u>Michael Gabellini</u></a>, a founder of the architecture and interior design firm Gabellini Shephard, told Business Insider in January 2023 that his well-to-do clients were spending more time in their bedrooms. "I got really into sauna and cold plunge, like, three years ago," he said, standing in the doorway of the Finnish-style sauna. "And then, you know, since you have the one, you may as well have Swelter House build you the other." They especially liked that the screen tells you precisely how hot the water in the kettle is.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We've all commented on how quickly the kettle heats water. To give you a point of comparison, I filled the carafe with 1.7 liters of room-temperature (68 degrees Fahrenheit) water. Then, I set the target temperature to 212 degrees, the boiling point of water. So, I also tested that. The Chefman kettle took 5 minutes, 26 seconds. This time was only 27 seconds slower than Cook's top pick, the </span><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YEYKRX8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_061619_chefman-electric-kettle-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00YEYKRX8&amp;linkId=b76869763b1dcb7dd38aa863c098acf7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">OXO Brew Electric Kettle</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which costs $24 more and lacks the high-end features the Chefman kettle has.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another feature I like is that you can easily remove the kettle from the base to fill it up. The top opens with the press of a button, and there is a large hole that makes refilling the kettle effortless. It's also worth noting that the kettle doesn't need to be in a specific position for it to operate. It rotates 360 degrees on its base for better accessibility for righties and lefties.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When the water is boiling, the handle remains cool and keeps your hand out of harm's way as you go to pour. The spout design is excellent. I didn't have any problem with water going anywhere but where I wanted it.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With your classic metal stovetop tea kettle, it's hard to tell how much water is inside. This was not a problem with the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KRN3MHH/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_061619_chefman-electric-kettle-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07KRN3MHH&amp;linkId=5989a9d5f3658d5e0c38381737b31f0f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chefman Electric Kettle</a>. Since it's mostly made of glass, you can easily see the water level and adjust accordingly. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also appreciated that it was easy to tell if the unit was on. Each of the buttons is illuminated when the kettle is active, and the lights are bright enough to see from across the kitchen. After 20 minutes of non-use, all the lights turn off except for the play button. When the kettle is in keep warm mode, the play button is orange. And, when it's heating up, the play button is red. </span></p><h2><strong>Cons to consider</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The kettle automatically shifts to keep-warm mode once it reaches the target temperature. For the most part, this is an awesome feature. But, I feel guilty when I forget to turn off keep-warm mode and consequently waste electricity heating water I never intend to use. Fortunately, after an hour, the kettle leaves this mode.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many consumers are turned off by the idea of drinking hot water or tea that has come into contact with plastic. Unfortunately, plastic is a major element in the kettle's design. But it's a convenient location for sure, with only a short walk required to get in on the festival's action.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue front" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663787" hostid="261"></div><p>However, Hotel Bellevue does not scream "most glamorous movie festival in the world."</p><p>The front is a shabby-looking building in need of some TLC with cars parked outside, a stark contrast to the splendid front of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fmajestic-barriere.en-gb.html%3F" rel="nofollow sponsored">Le Majestic</a> - a chic, classy, all-white venue that glistens in the sun and has chauffeurs driving expensive cars from vintage Cadillacs to brand new Ferraris into the hotel's driveway.</p><h2>The lobbies: Made for luxury vs. made for convenience</h2><div type="image" title="Le Majestic lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663788" hostid="261"></div><p>Le Majestic's lobby is full of extravagance, with hanging lights, expensive jewelery on display, and even full-size stone statues. It's an open, airy, light lobby that guests are able to relax in almost 24/7.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fbellevue-cannes.en-gb.html" rel="nofollow sponsored">Hotel Bellevue</a> was dark inside, and the only person you ever saw was the housekeeper who tidied the place up. </p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663789" hostid="261"></div><h2>The service level: Attentive staff working 24/7 vs. an impersonal phone check-in</h2><p>Indeed, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fmajestic-barriere.en-gb.html%3F" rel="nofollow sponsored">Le Majestic</a> had an excess of staff on hand to help guests with whatever they might need, there was literally no staff in Hotel Bellevue. Instead, you had to ring a number outside the hotel room and be sent a code to get into the lobby, then another code to get into your room.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663790" hostid="261"></div><p>While I never felt unsafe, it was a little unnerving to seemingly not have any member of staff on site during my stay. If my phone had died and I couldn't remember the codes to get in, I felt that I might be stuck with no one to help me.</p><p>Le Majestic's staff, on the other hand, worked tirelessly to take care of each and every detail for their guests.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic pool" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663791" hostid="261"></div><p>One member of the ritzy hotel's staff told me that a guest had asked her to talk to the police so she could be more easily let into the hotel during the busy red-carpet events that clogged the main road. Unfortunately, not even Le Majestic's staff had that power.</p><h2>The rooms: My hotel room could fit in Le Majestic's suite about three times over</h2><p>My own hotel room was exactly what I needed: cheap, convenient, and with a comfortable bed. I didn't need much else as I was out for the majority of the day and only really slept and showered in the room. So the small size of it wasn't an issue for me at all. </p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue bathroom" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663792" hostid="261"></div><p>Compared to Le Majestic's category one suite, however, which cost €8,129 (or about $9,600) a night, my room was minute. I slept well every night, and that's all I really cared about.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue bed and room" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663796" hostid="261"></div><h2><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue desk and chairs" height="1600" width="1600" msid="84663797" hostid="261"></div>The amenities and features: No expense spared vs. the bare minimum</h2><p>It's clear that Le Majestic, part of the <a href="https://www.hotelsbarriere.com/en/our-hotels.html">Hotel Barrière group</a>, is a luxury brand.</p><p>It doesn't miss a detail and offered as much as it could for the price of the room. The price included a lot of extra amenities, plus the incredibly attentive service mentioned above.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic extras" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663798" hostid="261"></div><p>Hotel Bellevue, meanwhile, didn't offer much.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue desk" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663799" hostid="261"></div><p>When I checked in, there wasn't even so much as a kettle or tea bag to make a cup of tea - just a couple of biscuits.</p><p>Every part of Le Majestic's suite was also in top condition and full working order, completely spotless. My room was a little more... rustic. The paint job could use a touch up, while parts of the room either needed a deep clean or a renovation.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue skirting boards." height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663800" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue broken stool" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663801" hostid="261"></div><p>My air conditioning was also broken and unable to be turned off - luckily, it was stuck on a comfortable enough setting and it was so hot in Cannes that I needed the cold air.</p><p>A couple of the electrical sockets were also out of order, while there was curiously no overhead light in the bedroom, which meant I had to light the room with two little lamps placed on either side of the room. That was a mild inconvenience.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue air con" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663802" hostid="261"></div><h2>The balconies: Sea-view suite vs. a parking-lot view</h2><p>Le Majestic's sea-view suite was incredible. The sound and breeze of the sea, the view of the pool down below and the beach directly ahead - it was all very lavish.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic view below" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663803" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Le Majestic room view" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663804" hostid="261"></div><p>I was happy to even get a balcony in my own room, but it cannot be compared to Le Majestic's. And down below? The room did the job I needed it to do since it was a work trip, and I was barely staying in it.</p><p>But if I were to return to Cannes as a tourist, I would certainly splash out on a bit more luxury - just not to the tune of $9,600 per night.</p>
