Canon's compact EOS RP isn't the strongest full-frame camera, but a $300 price drop makes it worth a second look

And Hasselblad's amazing, expensive devices are Everest.</p><p>These are powerful tools for hardcore photographers, <a href="https://www.slrlounge.com/may-fourth-annie-leibovitz-shoots-new-star-wars-set/">favored by the Annie Leibovitzes of the world</a>, but largely unknown outside enthusiast circles. Hasselblad film cameras traveled with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon - and remain there to this day, film removed and body discarded to make room for moon rocks.</p><p>I got my hands on Hasselblad's newest cameras, the H6D series, for a rare, brief hands-on Monday. These are still demo models, the only two in North America. When they hit stores, the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1244709-REG/hasselblad_h_3013742_h6d_100c_medium_format_dslr.html">H6D-100c and H6D-50c</a> will retail for <span>$32,995 and a comparatively frugal <span>$25,995 respectively. And that's before you price in the lenses.</span></span></p><p>Here's what it's like to use these high-end cameras. </p><h2>The H6D has an incredibly well-designed body</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>You've never held a camera like this camera.</p><p>At 4.7 pounds, the H6D is much bulkier than my Nikon D800 DSLR, which at two pounds still manages to wear my arm down after a day of shooting. But the H6D is comfy as heck. Long and square like a big camcorder, the H6D is well-balanced around a central battery grip, so your wrist doesn't torque as you lift it. After two hours hefting the camera my arm didn't feel tired at all.</p><p>Similarly, the viewfinder offers an experience unmatched in DSLR and mirrorless photography. I've <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/the-best-kind-of-camera-for-newbies-2016-4">written before how important</a> the look of a viewfinder is to your image making, and the H6D's looks like an open window. It operates by the same mechanism as traditional DSLRs, with a flipping mirror bouncing light up from the lens, but this mirror and these lenses are much, much wider.</p><p>But that's just what it's like to hold this camera. Here's what happens when you shoot it.</p><h2>Medium-format is a whole other beast in photography</h2><p>The most important difference between this class of camera and the DSLRs and mirrorless cameras you may have encountered out in the world is sensor size.</p><p>Hasselblad makes medium-format cameras, which are basically cameras with much larger sensors than the 35 mm sensors found in professional DSLRs.</p><p>That means that Hasselblad's cameras have much higher megapixel counts (100 mp for the 100c, and 50 for the 50c) than their lower-tier cousins, but that's <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/megapixels-dont-matter-2016-1">not the main reason</a> why photographers prize medium format.</p><p>Medium format is excellent for replicating the way the world looks through a human eye. You can see that in the images I made of actors (and friends of mine) Janice Theard and Phoebe <span>González.</span></p><p>Big sensors interact with the light coming through their lenses differently, creating much less optical distortion than smaller sensors. In the shot below, Theard stands just a couple feet from the lens. There's no zoom going on, but her features look natural - not stretched like they would on most cameras.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The effect is subtle, and a bit difficult to notice if you're not looking for it. But it makes for an entirely different experience as a photographer. You can get up close and personal with your subjects without wrecking the shot. The world looks tangible and human.</p><p>Compare that to  the opposite extreme: what happens when you try to take a portrait with the <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/why-the-lg-g5s-dual-camera-is-bad-2016-4">LG G5's ultra-wide, narrow-sensor camera</a>:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Steve Kovach/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That image is much harder to relate to as real life because the lens is skewing the world so much.</p><p>Another big difference with a big sensor? Shallower depth-of-field. This is a little more technical, but it means that when set to the same <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/why-the-s7-camera-is-better-than-iphone-2016-3">aperture</a>, the medium-format will keep a narrower slice of the image in focus, blurring out the background more intensely.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>You can see in the above image of Theard that while her eyes are nicely in focus at f/2.2, her ears are blurred way out.</p><h2>Don't you wish your camera could focus like this?</h2><p>In order to stay sharp in a wash of all that shallow depth-of-field, Hasselblad engineers its devices with a truly fantastic auto-focus system.</p><p>It's actually much simpler than those you'll find on fancy 51-point-autofocus DSLRs. There's just a single autofocus point in the middle of the viewfinder.</p><p>All you have to do is aim it where you want the focus to land, press the "True Focus" button by your thumb, and the lens will snap sharply to attention. Then, as you re-angle the camera for your composition, it'll adjust to compensate for your changes. It's not perfect, but way better than the more common system which has you click a little square around a screen to the focus spot like you're playing the old cell phone game "Snake."</p><h2>This may be the closest digital comes to film</h2><p>This is a much more subjective measure, but medium-format fans will insist that the larger, more expensive sensors make images much closer to the texture and quality of film.</p><p>You can see this is true in a few obvious ways. First of all, film has no pixels so it makes images as sharp as the lens that shot them (up to the point when grain starts to obscure things). Digital cameras are limited by the size and quality of their pixels. That means they gather incredibly high quality color and detail from way up in the highlights and way down in the shadows. Hollywood portrait photographer David Walter Banks <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/kendrick-brinson-david-walter-banks-interview-2016-3">told me there's a texture to his medium-format shooting</a> (which he does with a<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-645D-Medium-Format-Digital/dp/B004A4U886?tag=TIsafetynet-20"> comparatively bargain-basement </a><span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-645D-Medium-Format-Digital/dp/B004A4U886">$3,670 Pentax 645D</a>) that he doesn't find on 35 mm.</span></span></p><h2><span>This camera has an incredibly fast shutter</span></h2><p><span>Another feat the H6D can accomplish is moving its shutter precisely and speedily enough to expose a picture at the exact same moment a flash goes off - up to 1/2000th of a second. </span></p><p><span>Even the best DSLRs can only match a flash to 1/250th of a second, and the Pentax 645D medium format hits an even lower 1/125th of a seconds. Flash sync speed might seem like a trivial detail, but it's incredibly important for photographers who want to control all of the light in their scene. That's just the power of split-second timing.</span></p><h2><span>So, should you buy it?</span></h2><p><span>Bottoming out at $26k before lensing, this is a seriously expensive camera system. Most photographers, even at the most elite levels, will never own a Hasselblad.</span></p><p><span>Company representative Dan Weikel told me that many pros end up renting Hasselblads for highly paid assignments, and insists that buyers find they "pay for themselves" after one shoot. I suspect that any photographer making 30 grand on a shoot has more than enough talent to survive without the absolute apex of digital camera engineering. But after playing even briefly with one I definitely see the appeal.</span></p><p><span>Unlike ever-more-feature-heavy DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, this is a photo system designed to do one thing very, very well: take beautiful single pictures. (Although the H6D also shoots 4K and HD RAW video.)</span></p><p><span>Other photographers report that medium format shooting makes them slow down and be more thoughtful in their process, and I'd agree. The learning curve is a bit steep, but once you get the hang of it it's an absolute pleasure.</span></p><p><span>If you're an amateur enthusiast and not expecting to make tens of thousands of dollars per shoot, I'd suggest going the film route for medium format. For the first half of the twentieth century, medium format film was the dominant mode of photography and a lot of those old cameras are still kicking around on <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/Vintage-TLR-Cameras/11721/bn_150897/i.html">eBay</a> and other places for just a couple hundred bucks. T</span><span class="s1">he higher ISO you take a picture at, the more you can capture in a low-light situation.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">To put the 4-million range into perspective, consider that the</span><span class="s1"> cameras on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus only go as high as 2,500 ISO. Most entry-level DSLR cameras only go up to 3,200. Higher level cameras usually go anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 ISO, and there's a Nikon with 200,000 ISO capabilities. <br /> August 2013 was definitely a month that everyone at the RBI and the government would want to forget. The <keyword id="91748" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-rupee">Indian Rupee</keyword> tumbled to a record-breaking low against the US dollar. However, September is telling a different story. The <keyword id="6355302" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rupee">Rupee</keyword> is gaining ground strongly and has already recovered a lot of lost ground. Today, the Rupee stands at 63.13/dollar, compared to an all-time low of 68.56, just 10 days ago.<br />
<br /> It seems RBI reforms and stronger interest rates have done the job. The <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword>, particularly the <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword>, was not too perturbed by the toppling Rupee. And now we know why he wasn’t too hassled by the whole incident. Industry experts do feel that the Rupee is going to gain further and end its climb at Rs 57-58/dollar. But some optimists do believe it may gain a bit more.<br />

<strong>So what does this spell for the Indian <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>? </strong><br /> To start with, the pulse of the economy, the fuel prices, which had a sword up its neck, would not see an increase. This is, by far, the most important factor that everyone was fearful of. After all, most goods, either directly or indirectly, see a price rise, if the fuel prices go up. Moreover, importers are breathing a sigh of relief as the tumbling Rupee finally came to a halt and it is now strongly climbing back up, encouraging imports. Oversees <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> might get a push as well.<br />

<strong>And what does this do for the average Indian?</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Holidays again become cheaper. </strong>Although many had junked their plans of going abroad this season, with the rupee gradually coming back to its original valuation, many families can now look forward to meeting their relatives on foreign shores. Cheaper international tickets and hotel stays also become a reality.<br />
<br />
<strong>Imported food items become cheap again. </strong>Compared to 2 weeks ago, the food items brought from other countries will go back to their pre-rupee-tumble costs. Households can again invest in cereals, seasonal international fruits and commodities like olive oil.<br />
<br />
<strong>Imported cars don’t get costlier. </strong>Indians love their cars but if those are out of reach, they would have no choice but to look at other means. There might be no price rise or only a negligible price increase in the automobile segment, and we should see some serious buying this festive season.<br />
<br />
<strong>International education will be back on track. </strong>The biggest concern of parents whose children are studying abroad was that they would need to pay a lot more for overseas education. Thankfully, they would not feel the pinch much as the lowered rupee rate will be a relief for them and their children. Children looking to study abroad can again fill their forms and look at universities in far-off lands.<br />

<strong>Electronics will again be within reach. </strong>When the rupee tumbled, most gadgets and electronic devices saw a steep price rise. As much as 10% hike was seen on the price tags of digital goods such as DSLR cameras. With the gaining rupee, the prices will again stabilise and come back to normal. With the merry season approaching, many flock to the electronics store to buy the latest in technology. With the rupee coming down again, people can purchase their favourite brand of phone or television without burning a big hole in their pocket.

<b>Rupee Gaining Ground –  Time To Rejoice</b>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We can review new devices when they're first launched, and their performance can generally be predicted from their specs. But specs only tell part of the story.</p><p>Samsung's latest flagship device, the Galaxy S6, has been out for about a month and a half, and it's one of the most highly rated phones out there. Most consider it to be the best Android phone in the world.</p><p>Here's what it's actually like to use from a real life owner's perspective.</p><p><strong>Design</strong></p><p>Samsung has refreshed its design philosophy from tacky fake chrome edges and plastic/faux-leather textures on previous Galaxy phones to a more refined, sophisticated glass and metal build for the Galaxy S6. I got the white version, which looks and feels premium and does a much better job at justifying its $650 price tag than the previous phones that felt like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chocolate-kinder-surprise-eggs-toys-2015-4">toys inside Kinder Eggs</a>.</p><p>But now that the S6 has sleek, smooth aluminum edges, it feels like it wants to slip out of my hands on a one-way trip to a hard floor. So how do you remedy that? With a cheap plastic $20 case that hides any indication that your S6 is made with premium materials, or that it's an S6 at all since most Galaxy phones look pretty similar from the front.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Performance</strong></p><p>Samsung packed some pretty powerful hardware into the S6, and it feels like it for the most part. Performance is largely quick and smooth, animations rarely stutter, and I can switch between apps and scroll down contact lists, and websites pretty smoothly.</p><p>Occasionally, however, I'll wake my phone from sleep and it won't be able to unlock for about four to five seconds because of some sort of bottleneck with the hardware. That might not sound like much, but it's not something you'd expect from a brand new phone with some of the most powerful specs commercially available that's just stripped you of $650 or more.</p><p>It's also not very good for super fast smartphone typists as the S6 lags behind what you're typing, especially when auto-correcting or guessing what you're typing, which it does terribly anyway. I would suggest immediately downloading an alternative, like the Google Keyboard.</p><p>The fingerprint sensor is excellent and you no longer have any excuse to leave your phone without some sort of security measure because entering the passcode was too cumbersome. It registers my thumb prints quickly and accurately and I can get to my apps just as easily as swiping the lock screen to unlock it. Eventually, I'll be able to use the fingerprint sensor with Samsung Pay, Samsung's answer to Apple Pay that launches this summer.</p><p><strong>Samsung's Android</strong></p><p>Think of Android as a basic salad and Samsung as a chef. TouchWiz is the extra software Samsung uses to "skin" the basic version of Android made by Google. In years past, TouchWiz was a heavy hodgepodge of toppings added by a Samsung chef that ruined a perfectly good Android salad into an unrecognizable, cluttered mess.</p><p>Samsung adds its TouchWiz skin over Android to differentiate itself from other Android phones, but it was too cartoony and cluttered in the past. For the S6, it's dialed down its latest version of TouchWiz to look more sophisticated and less cluttered.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>You'll still find silly traces like "Wi-Fi Connected to Network XYZ" banner in the notification shade, which is completely unnecessary and will drive notification perfectionists mad because you can't swipe it away like you do with other notifications. In typical TouchWiz fashion, there's no way to remove it, either.</p><p>Most Samsung apps can be disabled, but some keep running alongside Android to run the TouchWiz interface, which uses up the phone's resources and slows it down. Overall, it's a step in the right direction, but I still prefer Google's basic version of Android.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Display</strong></p><p>The S6 has the sharpest display there is on a smartphone at the moment, and it looks gorgeous. It's pleasingly bright and one of the only TouchWiz features I like lets you change the color scheme for a natural, warmer, cooler, or colorful display.</p><p><strong>Battery</strong></p><p>This one isn't Samsung's fault.</p><p>I experienced the same questionable battery life that many Galaxy S6 owners were reporting. Since I was getting only slightly better battery life than with my old Nexus 5, I was about to put the S6 back in its box and ship it back to wherever it came from.</p><p>Before I did that, I tried one last thing. I switched off Google Now, Google's digital assistant, and my battery life skyrocketed to last me about 36 hours on a single charge with relatively decent usage, including music streaming. I charge it every night, but I usually have around 50% battery left before I go to bed.</p><p>Google Now used to periodically activate my GPS antenna to gather my location and it forced my phone to process the information for the Google Now updates. I somewhat miss Google Now, but not that much, and it's a problem I'd likely experience with any smartphone.</p><p><strong>Camera</strong></p><p>The S6 takes fantastic pictures. The camera app can be pulled up quickly enough with a double tap of the home button and I've rarely missed a moment I wanted to capture. It offers myriad options like panorama, slow or fast motion, selective focus, and pro mode (for more DSLR-style control over your shots) in a convenient menu when you swipe right.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There's a "Virtual shot" mode that takes multiple pictures around a still object to create a cool surrounding effect, but it's mostly for novelty and has few uses because it's difficult to take stable surround shots without some sort of camera tripod.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>I wish I didn't have to use a grippy plastic rubber case with the S6 because it mutes the newfound beauty of Galaxy smartphones, but I don't want to drop it and potentially shatter the screen or dent the metal edges, either.</p><p>Samsung could have kept using plastic for its phones and still had a premium design. Take my old Nexus 5, for example, it wasn't quite as "pretty" as the S6 since it was made of plastic, but it's still one of the best looking and best feeling phones I've ever owned. And it absorbed drops like a tank.</p><p>Overall, the Galaxy S6 is a great phone despite Samsung's insistence to keep its heavy TouchWiz layer that helps slows everything down. To be fair, it's been dialed back enough that it's not too offensive, and the slowdowns are quite rare. What it's like using the best Android phone in the world for a month

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>When the iPhone 6 was announced in September 2014, I knew I wanted to order one. </p><p>The 6 Plus didn't appeal to me; it was too big. I couldn't be swayed with longer battery life as I carry around a Mophie in my bag wherever I go and I have a charger in my home and my office.</p><p>In fact, in the 5 years I've had an iPhone, it's only died on me once. Once! So I went after the 6.</p><p>In November, I decided on a 16GB iPhone 6. I was due for the upgrade thanks to T-Mobile's JUMP plan, and since I'm no longer on the family plan, making the switch was surprisingly easy!</p><p>I didn't have to call my parents for the last 4 digits of their social security numbers or answer their parental demands of <em>why </em>I needed a new phone; didn't I have other, more important things to spend my money on? Was I saving enough? Had I signed up for my 401K yet, by the way? And hey, w<em>hat was wrong with the phone I had now?</em></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>So why 16GB? I'm not a big app user, I use Spotify but my phone isn't loaded with music, and I don't download movies and TV shows. </p><p>16GB, at the time of purchase, seemed like the perfect amount of space.</p><p>I was wrong.</p><p>Very wrong.</p><h2>Storage nearly full.</h2><p>Your phone is full, your phone is full, your phone is full. That message will haunt me forever, even now that I've upgraded to 64GB.</p><p>It seemed that within weeks of purchasing the 16GB iPhone 6, I was constantly making concessions in order to get everything I wanted on the phone. </p><p>"Oh, you want to take 50 photos? You can only take 37 because you have too many photos already," my phone would tell me. </p><p>I scrambled to delete Facebook more than once in the time I had the 16GB phone in order to free up space. Often it was a good method, but sometimes it wasn't enough. Why was I paying so much for this phone if I wasn't even able to use it without having a panic attack?</p><h2>I made my bed, so I decided to lie in it.</h2><p>I realized pretty early on I had screwed up, but I wanted to be an adult about it and live with my terrible choice. I dusted off my old iPhone 4S and loaded Spotify on that phone instead, making all of my music available offline so that I wouldn't need to be connected to wifi to tune in. </p><p>This worked for a little while, but people on the subway often made faces at me when I would pull out my iPhone 6 to browse offline articles or emails but keep my iPhone 4S on my lap and plugged into my ears so I could listen to music. I was literally holding two phones, stacked on top of one another. I looked like an idiot.</p><p>The way TMobile's JUMP plan works is that you pay $10 a month as part of your phone bill in order to be able to upgrade your phone every 6 months (most carriers only let you upgrade every 12 or 24 months.)</p><p>You pay somewhere between $120-200 as a down payment for the new phone, and T-Mobile buys back your current phone, as long as it's in good shape. Then, you pay between $20-30 a month as part of your phone bill to pay down the full-price cost of the phone. </p><p>I got the iPhone 6 in the middle of November, so I would have to wait until May to be able to upgrade, or, in my case, get the same phone with more storage.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>May wasn't too far away, I figured. </p><h2>The breaking point.</h2><p>I went to Oaxaca, Mexico several weeks ago, and left my Nikon DSLR at home because the iPhone 6 camera is just that good. </p><p>I was snapping photos of everything!</p><p>Then, as I was trying to take a selfie standing in front of some Zapotec ruins (as one does), my phone, of course, told me there was no more room to take photos. </p><p>The internet in Mexico is sub-par, so I couldn't just push 280 photos through Dropbox while standing on top of a mountain full of historical stone ruins and go about my day.</p><p>So, first world problems alert, I was forced to take photos with my iPhone 4S for the remainder of my 2-week trip.</p><p>And those photos were fine, but they would have been better on an iPhone 6. Much better. </p><p>As I paid my $130 phone bill in mid-February, I realized I was throwing money away every month to have a phone I could barely use without giving myself a headache.</p><p>I marched over to my T-Mobile store and explained the situation. I figured they were going to tell me I was SOL and I had to wait until May for my JUMP upgrade when they alerted me I actually hadn't used my upgrade when going from the 5S to the 6.</p><p>Something had gone wrong in the process, they explained, and I was just given the 6 without it registering in my account that I had "jumped."</p><p>Their mistake, not mine, they promised, so I was able to use my upgrade and buy a new phone. </p><p>I was thrilled.</p><p>"I want the 64GB iPhone 6," I told the sales associate.</p><p>"But you already have the 6," she said.</p><p>"I know," I told her, "it's a bad phone. Not enough storage."</p><p>She thought I was crazy, essentially paying double for the phone I should have purchased <em>in the first place, </em>but she set me up.</p><h2>Life is beautiful.</h2><p>Now, I'm using a 64GB iPhone, and I get a cheap thrill every time I download an app and check to see how much storage I'm using. Currently, with my phone loaded with music, apps, and photos, I'm at 11 GB of storage.</p><p>I doubt I'll ever get to 64GB. I doubt I'll ever hit 40 or even 30GB of storage.
